Host: Mindy McCulley, MS Family and Consumer Sciences Extension Specialist for Instructional Support, University of Kentucky  Guest: Dr. Leah Winer, MD Assistant Professor of Surgery, University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Center Cancer Conversations Episode 70 In this episode of Cancer Conversations on Talking FACS, host Mindy McCulley welcomes Dr. Leah Winer, Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Division of Surgical Oncology at the University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Center, to unpack the Surgeon General's advisory linking alcohol consumption to increased cancer risk. They discuss why public awareness of the alcohol–cancer connection is low, how alcohol causes harm at the cellular level, and why even small amounts may raise risk. Dr. Winer explains which cancers are most strongly connected to alcohol—mouth and throat cancers, larynx, breast, liver, esophageal, and colorectal cancers—and how alcohol may compound other risks like smoking or obesity. The conversation covers implications of the advisory, including potential warning labels on alcoholic beverages, reassessment of drinking guidelines, and gaps in research (patterns of drinking, age of initiation, and whether risk falls after stopping). Practical advice includes: don't start drinking if you don't already, consider reducing or stopping intake, know your family history and screening recommendations, and seek support for dependence when needed. Tune in for clear, research-based guidance on reducing cancer risk and how to translate the Surgeon General's advisory into day-to-day choices for better health.

Pat Winer's journey through the towing industry reveals a career marked by innovation, service, and an unwavering commitment to community. From his humble beginnings in the paint department at Challenger Wrecker Manufacturer in the early 1980s, Pat shares the fascinating evolution of his career alongside the technological advancements that have shaped modern towing.Working under industry pioneer Bill Bottoms at Challenger, Pat witnessed firsthand how manufacturing excellence and thoughtful design could transform an industry. He describes the state-of-the-art facilities where an overhead chain-link system moved parts between stations – a testament to the ingenuity that has always driven the best in the business. As the wheel lift revolution took hold in the mid-80s, Pat found himself at the epicenter of change, watching as demand for add-on wheel lifts grew so intense that "guys were waiting in line to get them."Perhaps most compelling is Pat's creation of Tow Trucks for Tots in 2007, an initiative born from a simple yet profound desire to transform the somber processions of tow trucks at industry funerals into something joyful and community-focused. What started as a local parade has grown into an annual tradition that has broken Guinness World Records, delivered toys to children affected by economic hardship and natural disasters, and even inspired similar events internationally. The friendly competition with the French Towing Association, who now hold the record with 491 trucks, only serves to benefit more children in need.Today, as District Sales Manager for Landau Corporation, Pat continues to champion innovation with new trailer designs featuring 10-foot-1 spread axles and expandable capabilities reaching 61 feet. His humility shines through when discussing his Hall of Fame induction, crediting his entire team for the success of Tow Trucks for Tots. For those interested in learning more or touring the Landau factory, Pat welcomes contact at pat.winer@landoll.com or 630-878-9837. Cookware is a $73 billion global industry - awash in all kinds of pots and pans. Like, if you've ever cooked scrambled eggs, you've probably used a non-stick frying pan. They're inexpensive and everywhere. But they've been dogged by complaints: many can't handle high heat, like broiling or searing, and they scratch easily. So, when Danny Winer came across a new non-stick technology at a trade show overseas, he jumped on it, co-founding Hexclad with a buddy. Danny was convinced it could be adapted to the U.S. market - and be a hit. He was right! Wide ranging conversation with Eric Winer, Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and Managing Director at Pagoda. What makes this podcast special is that it was recorded just a few days after the announcement of several spinouts and the rest of Pagoda sunsetting came out. Which sets the scene for a very honest and insightful Eric. Some of the topics we cover and personal highlights:- Eric has been very early and led massive growth at Gemini and Nifty Gateway. Common thread: taking familiar user experiences, implementing high standards of delivery and excellence to bring web3 to the masses. - The ways in which working for a hedge fund are different from building products; money as end goal cf. a real user as end-goal, how this influences team formation (skills and view-point diversity). Finally, we also touched on challenges of Product in an Engineering focused organisation (following up on our previous conversation with Alex Chiocchi, former head of Product at Pagoda. - Raw, honest assessment of factors that lead to Pagoda dissolution: expensive organisation, on competitiveness and sustainability of NEAR ecosystem of third party providers, founder led organisations and the advantages of smaller, focused teams as startups over larger well funded organisations.- A breakdown of a lot of Pagoda's services: what they do, importance, challenges going into the future, and opportunities for new providers. There is A LOT more, including a lot said between the lines. We hope this conversation is well received by all stakeholders involved and that it may be useful in addressing some of the outstanding matters in the best way possible. Resources- Blog Post Announcing NEAR One and Chain Abstraction Spinouts - Future of Pagoda Services Post- NUFFLE: NEAR DA Spinout- [Redacted] HackathonFollow on SocialsEric - https://x.com/eric_winer AVB - https://x.com/AvbNearWuipod - https://x.com/wuipodPagoda - https://x.com/PagodaPlatform

The scrappy duo completely self-funded the company by emptying their savings accounts, draining their 401Ks and maxing-out credit cards, and they originally packaged orders by hand and made deliveries in their personal vehicles. Everyone told them that a DTC model “would never work,” but Danny and Cole knew they could disrupt the market.
