Others have seen how it can be adapted to build strong literacy skills while honoring multilingualism. This first edWeb podcast of the Structured Literacy for Every Learner Summit explores what Structured Literacy looks like when implemented with Multilingual Learners in mind. Panelists discuss how explicit reading instruction can work alongside language development, ensuring students gain strong literacy skills without losing their linguistic identities. With a special focus on Spanish-speaking students, the conversation highlights ways to make Structured Literacy both effective and affirming. In this week's episode Professor Bronwyn Hemsley and Dr Lucy Bryant from UTS speak about their soon to be published systematic review into GLP. Bronwyn and Lucy speak about how and why they started this research and some considerations they would like stakeholders to reflect upon. The systematic review will be linked here once it has been published. Speech Pathology Australia supports individualised, person-centred care as best practice. SPA understands that there are differing perspectives about GLP, and understands the hesitation that both speech pathologists and people with lived experience hold. There is need for ongoing professional conversation about research, evidence base and, importantly, ensuring that consumer voice is included, especially in situations where they may have been historically excluded or marginalised. Resources: The publication of the review launches SHIELD (Science Highlights, Information, and Evidence on Language Development), a new research collaborative at UTS led by Professor Bronwyn Hemsley and Dr. Lucy Bryant, with Dr. Caroline Bowen (UTS), Dr. Rachel Grove (UTS), Gaenor Dixon (Queensland Department of Education), Dr. Katharine Beals (Drexel University), and Professor Howard Shane (Boston Children's Hospital, Harvard Medical School). In 2024, the team looked for evidence of GLP/NLA's impact on language, communication, or behaviour in individuals with communication disabilities. Alexandra (Sasha) Key | Professor, Marcus Autism Center, Emory University School of Medicine "Building a functional communication system: Does the baby have a say?" For a long time, language development has been framed mainly in the context of nature-nurture interactions. However, research in non-typical development suggests that another critical contributor should be considered. In this talk, I will present findings from neurophysiological studies in infants and children to demonstrate the importance of self-initiated active engagement with spoken communication for supporting more optimal developmental outcomes. Our data will demonstrate that choosing to engage with speech, an indication of social motivation, is an integral part of the previously established associations between the neural systems and the environmental factors contributing to individual differences in language development. Expanding the general conceptual approach to language to include nature-nurture-person will allow us to better understand the sources of variability in functional communication abilities across the full spectrum of developmental outcomes. If you would like to become an AFFILIATE of the Center, please let us know.Follow along with us on Instagram | Threads | Facebook

In this episode, Samantha Cieslinski interviews Liat, a researcher at Princeton University, about the groundbreaking research behind the first 1000 days (1KD) program in early childhood development. The 1KD program aims to predict language development in infants and emphasizes the importance of the first 1000 days of life in shaping a child's future. Liat shares her personal experience as a mother of two teenage boys and discusses the challenges and joys of parenthood. She also highlights the need for children to have opportunities for play and joy in their lives. The project aims to study language development in the first 1000 days of a child's life. The researchers recruited 15 families and installed cameras in their living areas to capture the child's environment. The data collected includes video and audio recordings, which are analyzed to understand how language develops. The first three years of life are crucial for development, and studying this period can provide insights into learning and communication. The project faces challenges in analyzing the large amount of data and detecting the child's location within the house. The families involved have unique characteristics, but all contribute to the understanding of language development. The 1KD research project captures the diversity and richness of child development in 15 families. The families are diverse in terms of race, language, and family structure. The project aims to capture the messy and dynamic nature of development, moving away from simplistic models. The researchers are interested in fine-grained details, such as crying behavior and parenting styles. They also value the privacy of the families and take measures to protect their data.1KD Project

The early intervention has been shown to to improve cognitive, language and social function in children with autism. The CDC says that 1 in 36 children have autism, 4 in 100 in boys and 1 in 100 girls. FOX's Tonya J. About The GuestsACCESS LITERACY TEAMDorothy KardatzkeI live with my husband in Columbus, Ohio. I taught for more than 25 years in both general education classrooms and in classrooms for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. Since 1997, when I was first trained in the English code, all my literacy instruction has been delivered using programs that are Orton-based. I left the classroom in 2018 to create space to write curriculum, and train/coach teachers. However, I will always be a teacher. It is who I am! I tutor little folks and big folks in literacy whenever I have the chance.I had a rather circuitous educational journey which offered me the opportunity to embark on what I do presently. I completed a double major in Elementary Education and Deaf Education from Augustana College. I later completed post-graduate work in Linguistics and Language Development at the University of South Dakota and Neuroanatomy at The Ohio State University.During leisure time, I enjoy spending time with my family, reading, hiking, fishing, canoeing, camping and cross-country skiing.Melody FurnoMy husband and I live in Columbus, Ohio where I taught an Orton-based Method for literacy in Kindergarten and first grade classrooms for 19 years. Encountering struggling readers in the classroom motivated me to enroll in coursework and to research current information on reading disabilities and dyslexia to set up interventions in the classroom.Since leaving the classroom, I have used an Orton-based Method to train and consult teachers in literacy across the country and tutor struggling readers in 4th and 5th grades for Columbus Public Schools. I enjoy nature, fishing, hiking and biking. My special interest is to encourage faith-based ministries to play a part in addressing youth and adult illiteracy. The literacy space has become increasingly polarizing since the reading wars began. There are a number of debates and questions that continue, including:Will kids learn to read “naturally”? What did the whole language approach get right, if anything? Is explicit phonics instruction just a pendulum swing (and is focusing on phonics enough)? Are we teaching kids to read too early? When we talk about “early literacy” instruction, what are we actually recommending and how does that look? I invited Jane Gebers, veteran speech-language pathologist and author to episode 157 De Facto Leaders to discuss these questions. I entered the field right around the time the National Reading Panel study was published, so there was a fair amount of research on evidence-based literacy intervention when I started practicing. But when Jane started practicing, much of this research hadn't been done, and she had the experience of watching the fields of education and reading instruction evolve. She was also one of the early adopters of many approaches that are common practice today, and it was an honor to hear about her work. Jane L. Gebers is the author of the popular resource, Books Are for Talking, Too! (Link here: https://www.slpstorytellers.com/2023/09/11/slp-author-book-books-are-for-talking-too-by-jane-gebers/), first published in 1990, and now in its 4th edition as of March 2023. A practicing speech-language pathologist for over 40 years, she has worked in public school, hospital, private, and clinical settings. She has been an adjunct professor at St. Mary's College of California and other universities where she taught Language Development, Assessment, and Intervention courses to students pursuing special education credentials. She currently holds a private practice in Northern California. In this conversation, Jane and I discuss:✅Everyone's talking about “scaffolding”, but what does this word actually mean?✅Reading practices that have stood the test of time, despite attempts to disprove their effectiveness.✅The battle between play-based learning and “sight words”; and how to emphasize the right skills at the right time.✅When building language skills, do we focus on a developmental hierarchy or environmental demands? ✅Mapping language to print symbols and what to address in the early years to set the stage for reading and writing.
