For this episode we're joined all the way from Harlem in New York City by venerable hip hop writer Havelock Nelson. The first rap editor at industry bible Billboard talks about his early years in his birthplace Guyana and his love of marching bands in the country's capital Georgetown. From there we hear about his family's move to Brooklyn in 1973 and his early exposure to rap and breakbeat tapes in high school. Havelock recalls the pioneering hip hop fanzines Word Up! and Black Beat – plus the seminal rap writings of Greg Tate and Nelson George – before recounting his experiences as a columnist on Billboard. He also explains the genesis of Bring the Noise, the 1991 "guide to rap music and hip-hop culture" he co-authored with fellow RBP contributor Michael A. Gonzales. Mention of our guest's 1994 interview with the Notorious B.I.G. takes us into discussion of the synergy between hip hop's rising stars and rap media such as The Source magazine. Havelock also reflects on memorable interviews he did with the likes of KRS-One, Slick Rick, LL Cool J and Salt-N-Pepa. The latter duo takes us into audio clips from an audio interview with a Virginia-born artist who was profoundly influenced by them: the one and only Missy Elliott, speaking to Sara Scribner after the release of 1997's debut album Supa Dupa Fly... followed by the voices of her collaborators Timbaland and Magoo. The publication of Taschen's monumental new 75 Years of Atlantic Records prompts reflections on the legendary label co-founded by the late Ahmet Ertegun, plus our thoughts on the present-day roster that includes Charli XCX, Bruno Mars, Coldplay and Ed Sheeran. The episode concludes with quotes from newly-added library pieces about artists such as Wee Willie Harris, Jeff Barry & Ellie Greenwich, the Pharcyde and André 3000. Disclaimer: This Episode contains discussions of physical and sexual abuse. To skip past these discussions skip to (4:54) There is no shortage of innovators in Hip-Hop, though for the most part the genre has been a world dominated by male artists. But from her mind-bending, award-winning music videos to her experimental approach to producing, Missy Elliott has changed the game. She has been one of the most forward-thinking minds in hip-hop since she first made her debut in 1997 - regardless of gender. In her early days as an artist, Missy would form a R&B group called Fayze with friends La'Shawn Shellman, Chonita Coleman, and Radiah Scott. Through her friend Melvin Barcliff, who rapped under the name Magoo, she met Timothy Mosley, a local DJ producer operating as Timmy Tim. He would produce some demos for Fayze, including a single called “First Move.” Fayze would impress DeVante Swing, a producer, songwriter and singer for the rising R&B group Jodeci, after singing a cappella for him following a concert. Swing invited the group to record in New York City, along with their producer Tim, who Swing renamed “Timbaland” after the popular Timberland construction boots that were taking over hip-hop fashion. Missy got her first gig as a songwriter, producer and rapper on a song called “That's What Little Girls Are Made Of,” the debut single by Raven-Symoné, the eight-year-old star of The Cosby Show. But Missy quickly learned the hard way that the music biz wasn't ready to welcome her with arms wide open. Missy was blindsided though when they cast a smaller, lighter-skinned actress to lip-sync to her lines in the song's music video. At that point, she realized that she would have to work even harder to be taken seriously as an artist. Eventually Missy and Timbaland would become their own as a songwriting/production team. They co-wrote songs for artists like 702, Busta Rhymes and the debut album by Ginuwine, which Timbaland produced in full. But it was their work on One In A Million, the second album by teenage R&B sensation Aaliyah, that really opened the door for Missy as an artist. Timbaland's flickering, clap/snap sounds on One In A Million set Aaliyah apart from the rest of R&B, introducing a fresh and futuristic style that no one had ever heard before. And the duo would hit it big when the album's lead single "If Your Girl Only Knew" topped Billboard's US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, while peaking at #11 on the Hot 100. One in A Million would end up going triple platinum in the US, selling more than eight million copies worldwide, but the impact was immediate. Overnight, labels were scouring to offer Missy a record deal, but she was quick to see right through them. Through her own label, distributed by Elektra records - Missy Elliot would release the albums Supa Dupa Fly and Miss E... So Addictive - which gave her mainstream exposure as an artist - with her and Timbaland pushing their production into new territory. By 2001, Missy would release the seminal Miss E... So Addictive which not only included lead single "Get Ur Freak On", but her most popular song of all time... This is the story of Missy Elliot's "Work It" with newly unearthed audio from Missy Elliott herself!

Slow Jamz Radio is back on the internet, this time we're doing live visual sets from Slow Jamz Gallery. Episode #006 kicks off with a melting pot of Da Bassment Cru, Swing Mob, & the SuperFriends. Da Bassment Cru (aka Swing Mob) was a collective of artists founded by Jodeci member, DeVante Swing in 1995. These artists included: Timbaland, Missy Elliott (Sista), Magoo, Ginuwine, Playa, Tweet (Sugah), and many more. The group made a compilation tape that they marketed to record labels, then eventually their contributions have made it's debut from Jodeci's The Show, The After-Party, The Hotel. Da Bassment Cru/Swing Mob eventually disbanded from DeVante's mood swings and the artists continued to collaborate under the collective, The Superfriends in 1997. In my opinion, this is really when each individual artist began to shine and rise to growth. Timbaland & Magoo dropped their album, they adopted Aaliyah to their roster (in which Tim, Missy, & Static backed her project), Missy dropped Supa Dupa Fly, Playa dropped Cheers 2 U, and Ginuwine wanted to be your pony. Aaliyah's death in 2001 shook the collective and the members began to drift apart. TRACKLIST: Heartbroken by Aaliyah Say My Name (Timbaland's Remix) by Destiny's Child After Dark by Drake ft. Welcome back to the Record Report! For this episode, we're heading down south to VA to hear the sounds of Missy and Timbaland through the female artist's debut album Supa Dupa Fly. From Timbo's experimental beats to Missy's slick rhymes slide through some insane visuals, Supa Fly was a project that showcased the VA native's versatility as a musician. Her rhymes paint vivid pictures through a wide spectrum of love ballads, powerful duets, and unique bangers that made cars and clubs shake. Like they always do this time, Vance and Ahmad choose their top 5 tracks (or they try to) from the LP, talk about Timbaland's colorful palate of sample choices, discuss Missy collaborating with other female artists like Aaliyah, and mention her ability to arrange legendary songs. We also reveal what we listened to lately, and debate about Jay-Z albums we don't like. @Yo_Ahki/@VanceB_ Listen to this new episode and previous others on: Apple Podcasts (https://tinyurl.com/jydzz9fk) Spotify (https://tinyurl.com/c3u77hcf) Anchor (https://anchor.fm/recordreport) Follow Record Report Podcast on: Instagram: (@RecordRepPod) Facebook: Facebook.com/RecordReportPodcast Twitter: https://twitter.com/recreppodcast?lang=en #MissyElliott #Timbaland #Virginia #LilKim #SupaDupaFly #HipHop #Ginuwine #Jamiroquai #Samples #RnB #Soul #Aaliyah #Radio #Podcast

Missy Elliott is the reigning Queen of Rap, credited with changing the face of hip-hop with her debut album Supa Dupa Fly and five consecutive platinum albums that followed. But before selling 30 million records, Elliott was rejected by producers, dropped by a major label and told she didn't fit the “image” the industry was looking for. Join us this week as we tell Elliott's story, from quitting the music business altogether to becoming the first female rapper nominated to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Hosted on Acast. To celebrate our podcast's milestone 50th episode, I invited the wonderful Allison Rapp (Ultimate Classic Rock) to talk about Missy Elliott. Allison recently wrote a piece about why Elliott deserves to be inducted into this year's class of inductees for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. If selected for induction, Elliott would honored in her first year of eligibility but also make history as the first female hip-hop honored by the Rock Hall. Topics discussed include Elliott's landmark debut album Supa Dupa Fly (1997), her collaborations with various artists over the artists, her groundbreaking music videos, the many accolades she's received and her widespread influence on popular music.
Kameelah Williams, aka Meelah, is a singer and song writer who got her start as the lead singer of the famous Motown 90's trio: "702". 702 consisted of Williams and sisters LeMisha and Irish Grinstead, all of who were students at the Las Vegas Academy of Performing Arts. The restructured group was christened 702, which is Las Vegas' area code, and was now ready to record their first album. The group's first album was entitled: "No Doubt" and soared to #1 on the charts. Missy Elliott co-wrote & produced four songs on the album including the smash hit single "Steelo" and its remix. The album spawned three hit singles: "Steelo", "All I Want" and "Get It Together". In addition, "Steelo" with altered lyrics was used as the theme song for the Nickelodeon television show Cousin Skeeter & "All I Want" was featured in the Nickelodeon movie Good Burger. The sensual and very emotional single "Get It Together" gave the album its third hit and reached 10 on the Billboard charts. Additionally, the album earned them a Soul Train Lady of Soul Award in 1997. It sold over 500,000 copies worldwide. 702 served as the opening act for New Edition, Keith Sweat, and Blackstreet during the 1996-97 New Edition reunion tour. They also appeared on Elliott's debut album Supa Dupa Fly on her 1998 song "Beep Me 911" which reached #14 on the UK Singles Chart. The girls also sang with Busta Rhymes new artist Rampage and made cameos in the sitcoms Sister, Sister and Moesha. After going gold with their debut album, the self-titled album "702" was released in 1999. The first single "Where My Girls At" peaked at #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and remained in the top 20 for more than 30 weeks, which earned 702 an American Music Award nomination. The album went on to sell over 1,000,000 copies worldwide certifying its platinum status. #702 #Meelah #Kameelah Hosted by Broadcaster & Psychotherapist Nnamdi E.S. This week we are getting into an album that we should have covered much earlier, the grammy nominated platinum selling classic Supa Dupa Fly by the illustrious Missy Misdemeanor Elliott. Supa Dupa Fly is the debut album from Missy and is produced entirely by Timbaland and Missy. This album came with some of the most iconic visualizes of all time. The Rain has Missy in the puffed up black trash bag like jogging suit through a fish eyed lens. The album turned 25 this year in July and deserves to be celebrated like the classic it is. Thank you Missy Misdemeanor Elliott for this album and your iconic, illustrious, beautiful writing along with everything you've contributed to hip hop, r & b, music and the world. B. Cox looks back at Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott's debut album Supa Dupa Fly as it turns 25. After spending the beginning part of her career with Devante's Swing Mob Records with her girl group Sista (which never materialized an album), she linked up with childhood friend and producer Timothy "Timbaland" Mosley from Virginia and began collaborating producing and writing songs, most notably for Aaliyah's smash One In A Million album in 1996.After signing with Elektra Records and starting her own label, Goldmind, the two recorded and produced Missy's debut in only two weeks. What resulted was a platinum selling album that featured two successful singles, "The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)" and "Sock It 2 Me" with equally visually catchy videos to accompany them.Missy unique and unorthodox rapping style, voice, mannerism coupled with her singing talents and mixed Timbaland's futuristic beats that combined unique melodies, rapid drums and deep bass lines served as a template for both of their careers over the next quarter century. It made Missy a star that would cross over in to pop and mainstream success and Timbaland one of the best and well respected producers in the industry.Visit The Vault Classic Music Reviews Onlinewww.vaultclassicpod.comSupport The Vault Classic Music Review on Buy Me A Coffeehttps://www.buymeacoffee.com/vaultclassicpodShow NotesThe Ringer: How Missy Elliott brought 'Supa Dupa Fly' to Life. https://www.theringer.com/2021/7/15/22578525/how-missy-elliot-brought-supa-dupa-fly-to-lifeHigh Snobiety: 20 Reason's Why Missy Elliot's "Supa Dupa Fly" Is Still the Best 20 Years Onhttps://www.highsnobiety.com/p/missy-elliott-supa-dupa-fly/RockTheBells: Classic Albums-Supa Dupa Flyhttps://rockthebells.com/articles/classic-albums-supa-dupa-fly-by-missy-elliott/Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-vault-classic-music-reviews-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
Sharing an episode from our friends over at Broken Record. On Broken Record, acclaimed producer Rick Rubin, bestselling author Malcom Gladwell, and former New York Times editor Bruce Headlam talk with the musicians you love about their lives, inspiration, and craft. Rick Rubin has interviewed so many great artists over the years—including Andre 3000, Nas, and Neil Young. Today we will hear Rick's conversation with one of the most innovative artists in music, Missy Elliot. This year is the 25th anniversary of Missy's classic debut album, Supa Dupa Fly. When that album dropped, Missy's unconventional rhyme schemes paired with her childhood friend Timbaland's futuristic production set a precedent for what was creatively possible in hip-hop. And throughout her career, Missy's maintained that same level of playful creativity. Missy broke records this year when she was recognized as having more platinum albums than any other female rapper. She's also the first female MC to be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame for songs she's written for Mariah Carey, Beyoncé, Destiny's Child and Aaliyah's biggest hits: “One In A Million,” and “If Your Girl Only Knew.” Today Rick Rubin talks to Missy Elliott about her wide-reaching influence and creative process. She explains what it was like writing for Aaliyah, who was one of the first artists to embrace Missy and Timbaland's unique style. She also talks about why she and Timbaland made a pact not to listen to any other music while recording her debut album. You can listen to more episodes of Broken Record wherever you listen to podcasts.
In the Nineties, much of the conversation about hip-hop was dominated by the feud between the East and West Coasts. The South was putting out tons of incredible rap records too, but almost nobody was paying any attention to Portsmouth, Virginia. With 1997's "Supa Dupa Fly", Missy Elliott and Tim "Timbaland" Mosley changed that, and gave the world a taste of the future. Missy and Timbaland met as teenagers in Virginia and soon found they were musical soulmates. As they explain to Rolling Stone's Rob Sheffield in the episode, that friendship translated into some of the most lasting and adventurous music to come out of the Nineties. Both were content working as behind-the-scenes players, but once Missy was coaxed into making a solo album, the pair created "Supa Dupa Fly" in an incredible two weeks. Missy's voice and delivery were one of a kind, whether she was singing, rapping, or just yelling, “Beep beep!" In this week's episode of Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums, both explain the stories behind the songs, including how Tim created the incredible Southern soul space-funk beat for "The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)".See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

But before discussing the Misdemeanor, a listener calls in and commits a Rolling Felon when he rats out one of the guys for writing a love song about having a sandwich in his pocket. In addition, we're riding the friendly skies again with a couple of segments of Flight Tonight and discussing whether Beck should be opening for Arcade Fire. We then talk Turner and Hooch, Who Got the Hooch, and baba ganoush...OK actually, somebody made us talk about nutritional yeast, and the nooch got loose. Then at (59:00) we're chatting about Missy Elliott's debut studio album, Supa Dupa Fly. We discuss how Missy Elliot's first album was produced by her own label, the best Timbaland songs, and whether the singing and rapping on this album was a precursor to Drake (the rapper...not the relays you Iowa listeners). In this episode we are joined by the droll and charming Chris Roberts, who looks back on his career as a journalist, author and musician. Chris recalls the seminal early experience of first hearing T. Rex's 'Metal Guru' and explains how this led eventually to his writing for Sounds and then Melody Maker in the '80s. After detours via the ill-fated Ikon magazine and the fascinating Idle Worship anthology, we get to Chris' Uncut years and hear an audio clip of him being very cheeky to Debbie Harry. This brings us up to the present day and the publication of his fine new study of the Velvet Underground. We then turn to the week's featured artist, the divine Missy Elliott, and discuss her 25-year-old debut Supa Dupa Fly, reviewed by Chris for the Maker — and the "Misdemeanor" gal's amazing career in general. Another album turning 25 is Radiohead's towering OK Computer, which affords the perfect excuse to hear clips from not one but two audio interviews — the first with Thom Yorke and Colin Greenwood from 1993, the second with Phil Selway from 1997, shortly after OK Computer's release. Chris reminisces about two Radiohead shows he saw, including a Royal Festival Hall gig he reviewed in 2000. Mark then runs through the articles he's most enjoyed adding during the previous fortnight, including pieces about the Ronettes, the Impressions, Ray Parker, Jr. and A Guy Called Gerald. Jasper finishes things off with remarks about interviews with Fall Out Boy and Grandmaster Flash. Many thanks to special guest Chris Roberts. His new book The Velvet Underground is published by Palazzo and available now. Pieces discussed: Debbie Harry audio, Chris on Supa Dupa Fly, Missy Elliott, Radiohead audio: Thom Yorke & Colin Greenwood and Phil Selway, The Ronettes, John Mayall, Stonewall riots, Popol Vuh, Guy Called Gerald, The Impressions, Ray Parker Jr., Fall Out Boy, Grandmaster Flash and Ayo. Chris reminisces about two Radiohead shows he saw, including a Royal Festival Hall gig he reviewed in 2000.Mark then runs through the articles he's most enjoyed adding during the previous fortnight, including pieces about the Ronettes, the Impressions, Ray Parker, Jr. and A Guy Called Gerald. Jasper finishes things off with remarks about interviews with Fall Out Boy and Grandmaster Flash. Many thanks to special guest Chris Roberts. His new book The Velvet Underground is published by Palazzo and available now.Pieces discussed: Debbie Harry audio, Chris on Supa Dupa Fly, Missy Elliott, Radiohead audio: Thom Yorke & Colin Greenwood and Phil Selway, The Ronettes, John Mayall, Stonewall riots, Popol Vuh, Guy Called Gerald, The Impressions, Ray Parker Jr., Fall Out Boy, Grandmaster Flash and Ayo.
You don't have to wait until tomorrow for another great podcast, because this week Beck Did it Better is the best podcast about Jimi Hendrix and the 92nd greatest album of all time, Axis: Bold as Love, not to be confused with Hendrix's other great albums with Underline as Love or Subscript as Love. But before we listen to Jimi we get a live call in from the Drake Relays, making this the best track and field podcast to listen to. In addition, the guys cut loose talking consumer slogans that we just can't quit, the best BBQ restaurants in the southeast and Minneapolis, and taking in a show at the Chanhassen Dinner Theater. In addition, Rob has a habit that Aaron declares is the weirdest thing he has ever heard on the podcast. Then at (48:00) we talk about Jimi Hendrix's third album on the list, Axis: Bold as Love. We discuss the jazz influence on this album, what direction Hendrix would have taken had he lived past 27, and how Jimi Hendrix ruined Eric Clapton's life. We also run down the best songs not sung by the lead singer. The conversation on this episode is truly slow roasted. Call or text 802 277 BECK. Don't be a brat! You can email us at beckdiditbetter@gmail.com follow us on our Twitter and Instagram @beckdiditbetter and feel free to leave a review on your favorite podcast app. Please mention feet if you do review the show. If we can get "ROSIE LOVES FEET" to be something that is searchable online, I feel like this will all be worth it. This episode will fall into the sea, eventually, but don't worry, because next week's episode is the bomb diggy and the best Missy Elliott podcast when we talk Supa Dupa Fly.

Grab your Hefty bags, Fishies, 'cause it's time for us to show some RESPEK to one of the greatest music videos of all time: Missy Elliott's "The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)," which came out 25 years ago this May. That garbage bag/Michelin man look that's burned in our minds was by June Ambrose (who also did our fave Belly). This was peak Hype Williams era, so we're blessed with his trademark fisheye lens which gloriously highlights Missy's iconic makeup (which was done by Billy B) and those Alain Mikli glasses. Enjoy this fun music minisode!
Missy Elliott is one of popular music's greatest innovators. This year Missy broke records when she was recognized as having more platinum albums than any other female rapper. It's a fish-eye lens showdown! We're going back to the Hype Williams era of hip-hop to argue which is the best debut single by the great wild rappers of the '90s? Is it "Woo Hah!! Got You All in Check" by Busta Rhymes or "The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)" by Missy Elliott?

Returning guest, writer and editor for Billboard, Rolling Stone, Variety, Vulture and more, Steven J. Horowitz, joins DJ Louie to chop it up about pop revolutionary Missy Elliott. Louie and Steven discuss Missy's entree into the music biz along with partner-in-crime Timbaland as a songwriter and producer for artists like Jodeci, Ginuwine, and Aaliyah. They then break down what makes Missy's music sound as mind-bending today as it did in the late '90s, why her debut album, Supa Dupa Fly, caused such a stir when it was released, her one-of-a-kind video aesthetic and physical presentation, perpetual innovation as she crossed over from hip hop star to pop icon at the turn of the century and why all the great female rappers of Missy's era stopped creating new music in the mid aughts. Finally, Louie and Steven rank Missy in the official Pop Pantheon. This week we were joined by guests Lille and Madeleine Madden, who are Gadigal, Arrernte, Kalkadoon, Bundjalung sisters living in Sydney’s Inner West. They were recently involved in the multimedia work Barangaroo Ngangamay (Barangaroo Dreaming), which explored indigenous languages through The Sydney Language project. Lille also spoke about her work as zookeeper at Taronga Zoo, working with the Australian Fauna. Maddy, who just finished shooting the adaption of Picnic at Hanging Rock, spoke about her experience being visible a black woman in mainstream media. Yesterday was International Non-Binary People’s Day. Contrary to what Vogue published in their recent nonbinary issue, being nonbinary is a bit more complex than borrowing your boyfriend's clothes. Non-binary or Genderqueer refers to gender identities that are not exclusively masculine or feminine—identities which are outside of the gender binary and cisnormativity. We celebrated the 20 year anniversary of Missy “Misdemeanor” Elliott's debut album Supa Dupa Fly, which still holds up as one of the greatest musical debuts of all time. Over her impressive career, Elliott’s message has had a clear feminist message that "women, whether conforming to heteronormative gender binaries or not, are equal to men, as important as men, and as powerful." Go Home, Everything Is Terrible: The Week In News From A Feminist Perspective Beyonce blessed us with a very strong photo of Rumi and Sir. It’s a good omen. Twitter blew up this week when a Michigan CEO’s reply to his employee’s sick day email went viral. Feminist activist Sheila Michaels, who played a key role in bringing the title "Ms." from obscurity into mainstream use, has died at 78. Black Mirror’s ‘San Junipero’ has been nominated for two Emmys in a win for the visibility of queer women on television.
