Unplug Your Self S02E07 - Stuck in the Middle: Coping with Career Plateaus and Frustration

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 8, 2023 14:18

The corporate ladder, often envisioned as a continuous upward trajectory, inevitably leads many to a plateau—a phase where growth seems to pause, and the path forward blurs. Episode 7 delves into this critical juncture, defined by the Harvard Business Review as a period marked by a perceived lack of upward mobility. With 74% of employees encountering this phase, it's a widespread challenge that demands attention. We explore the structural and personal causes of career plateaus, from limited promotion opportunities to skillset saturation. The repercussions are significant, leading to diminished job satisfaction and organisational commitment, with many professionals considering a departure from their current roles. Yet, it's not just about climbing the corporate ladder or securing promotions. Job satisfaction and feeling valued are equally crucial. The episode examines the case of Jane, a middle manager whose high performance goes unrecognised, leading to career frustration—a common narrative in the corporate sphere. However, career plateaus can also be reframed as opportunities for introspection and growth. We delve into the power of a growth mindset, as posited by Carol Dweck, and its role in transforming career plateaus into periods of learning and skill enhancement. For example, Mark, a marketing executive, leverages his plateau to up-skill in digital marketing, thereby reinvigorating his career trajectory. The episode also emphasizes the importance of revisiting career aspirations and harnessing both intrinsic and extrinsic motivations to maintain momentum. We share the story of Sarah, an IT professional whose clear vision and proactive leadership development propel her towards her goal of leading an IT department. Critical thinking and strategic planning are presented as essential tools for navigating career plateaus. Anna, an operations manager, uses critical thinking to identify new growth opportunities within her company's expansion, while Robert, a junior analyst, employs a detailed career plan to pave his way toward becoming a financial advisor. We also highlight the importance of taking calculated risks, as illustrated by Sophia, whose decision to lead a new sales territory leads to a breakthrough promotion. The episode concludes with practical strategies for career advancement, emphasising continual learning, networking, mentorship, and work-life balance. Emily's story of transitioning to a digital content role, Mike's networking success, and Jessica's work-life recalibration underscore the tangible steps one can take to overcome career stagnation. "Beyond the Plateau" is more than an episode—it's a roadmap for professionals at a crossroads, offering guidance to transform a career plateau from a stumbling block into a stepping stone for growth, satisfaction, and success. It's a reminder that the journey matters as much as the destination, and every plateau can become a new beginning with the right perspective and actions.

The journey to the pinnacle of corporate success is often romanticised as a straightforward climb. However, the reality is a treacherous ascent fraught with trade-offs and sacrifices. This episode examines the diverse motivations that drive individuals up the corporate mountain, from the allure of higher pay and prestige to the intrinsic satisfaction of impacting an organization. We look at the stories of industry titans like Marissa Mayer and Brian Acton, whose career choices reflect the spectrum of motivations and the varied definitions of success. While Mayer's intense work ethic propelled her to the top of Yahoo, Acton's decision to step down post-WhatsApp's acquisition by Facebook highlights the value he places on personal life and philanthropy. The episode underscores the importance of critical thinking and strategic career planning, likening the corporate journey to navigating a pyramid where opportunities narrow as one ascends. We draw inspiration from the careers of Sheryl Sandberg and Tim Cook, whose strategic moves and long-term planning exemplify the power of a well-thought-out career trajectory. Furthermore, we delve into the significance of mindset, aspirations, and motivation in career progression. We discuss how a growth mindset, as advocated by Carol Dweck, and intrinsic motivations can lead to greater job satisfaction and success, as evidenced by the careers of Mary Barra and Howard Schultz. Finally, we address the crucial aspect of making informed choices on the corporate ladder. Balancing trade-offs, aligning decisions with personal values, and maintaining a work-life balance are pivotal. We take cues from Susan Wojcicki's approach to leadership, which integrates her role as YouTube's CEO with her commitment to family and personal life. In conclusion, "The Corporate Ascent" is a guide for the ambitious professional. It's an episode that doesn't just chart the path to the top but also provides the wisdom to traverse it with one's values intact, ensuring that the summit reached is one of personal as well as professional fulfillment.

The corporate ladder, a symbol of hierarchical progression in the professional world, often captivates individuals with promises of prestige, recognition, and financial rewards. However, true career satisfaction goes beyond titles and external validations. This episode begins by demystifying the corporate ladder, emphasising that success is subjective and varies from person to person. Societal norms and cultural expectations significantly influence our career aspirations. The pressure to conform to external markers of success can sometimes overshadow personal fulfilment. A study by Harvard Business Review highlights the pitfalls of such societal pressures, which can lead to career dissatisfaction. However, it's essential to recognise that individual definitions of success are paramount. Dr. Carol Dweck's insights on intrinsic motivation and the growth mindset underscore the importance of internal validation over external accolades. The episode then transitions into practical career planning strategies. It emphasises introspection, setting SMART goals, and continuously seeking growth opportunities. Real-world examples, like John's transition from a traditional software engineering role to a more fulfilling position in research and development, illustrate the power of aligning personal passions with professional pursuits. Furthermore, the episode delves into the significance of nurturing a growth mindset for career advancement. Embracing challenges, learning from setbacks, and being adaptable in the face of change are essential traits for professional growth. Lastly, the episode underscores the importance of defining personal aspirations and motivations. It differentiates between intrinsic and extrinsic motivations and stresses the need to align personal values with organisational goals for genuine career satisfaction. The episode concludes by addressing the challenge of career stagnation. Acceptance, adaptability, and a proactive approach are highlighted as key strategies to overcome stagnation and rediscover career passion.

The One Percent Problem refers to the small fraction of the global population that controls a disproportionately large share of wealth, leading to significant societal, economic, and ethical challenges. This episode delves into the factors contributing to the rise of the One Percent, including technological advancements, globalisation, and tax policies that favour the wealthy. The concentration of wealth among the elite has far-reaching consequences, perpetuating a system where opportunities and resources are skewed in favour of a privileged few. This raises questions about fairness, social cohesion, and the nature of a just society. The episode sheds light on the paradox of wealth, highlighting how, while wealth can drive economic growth and innovation, its extreme concentration poses significant societal challenges. These challenges include hampering social mobility, weakening the middle class, creating market distortions, and eroding social cohesion. Beyond the economic implications, the episode delves into the moral and ethical dimensions of extreme wealth. It explores the principles of distributive justice, which argue for a fair distribution of wealth, and contrasts this with views that see wealth accumulation as a product of individual effort and meritocracy. The episode emphasises the ethical responsibilities of the wealthy, including philanthropy, charitable giving, and corporate social responsibility, while also highlighting the need for structural reforms to address the root causes of wealth concentration.

In this enlightening episode, we navigate through the multifaceted dimensions of wealth and its profound impact on the human condition. We discuss the significance of wealth in meeting our basic needs and ensuring our physical and psychological well-being. The episode uncovers the paradox of wealth, highlighting how, beyond a certain threshold, the correlation between wealth and happiness diminishes, and an excessive focus on wealth accumulation can lead to strained relationships and compromised overall well-being. We also delve into the societal implications of wealth disparities, exploring how the concentration of wealth among a small fraction of the population can lead to a myriad of social problems, including reduced social mobility, increased social tensions, and diminished opportunities for individuals from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. The episode emphasizes the importance of addressing inequality and fostering a more equitable distribution of wealth to create a fairer and more inclusive society. Furthermore, we explore the psychological factors influencing the pursuit of wealth, examining how societal norms, cultural values, and individual psychological needs shape our attitudes, values, and behaviors related to wealth accumulation. The episode provides insights into how the pursuit of materialistic values can impact our overall happiness, life satisfaction, and interpersonal relationships. Drawing on a wealth of research and studies, including those by Kahneman and Deaton, Kraus and Keltner, and Pickett and Wilkinson, this episode offers a nuanced understanding of the complex relationship between wealth and the human condition and prompts reflections on the pursuit of a fulfilling life beyond financial prosperity.

This week I got the chance to interview a Mr Jordan Carmichael. Someone I have know for a time now. It all started with a phone call ironically. In a moment when I needed phone calls. I was just over 3 months past being made redundant and trying to start my own company. I was failing at that and I was angling to get a real job. At this point I was not getting much in the pipeline of opportunity and was near giving up. Then my phone rang. So what started out like any recruiter calling me quickly turned into a deeper and more meaningful conversation about what I was capable of. How I made an impact. What my real skills were. On that call Jordan pitched me the job that would begin the change I needed in my life. The one that would shift who I was professionally to the next realm. I can’t thank him enough for that. Though he may not know the full effect of what he did, I know I am.We sort of go COVID-19 crazy and wax lyrical about all the things that are going on in the world. While the work did not go ahead, I was able to maintain contact over the years following this. And as my life changed, I reached out to Paul for some mentorship in my next steps. He was more than happy to oblige. That being said, Paul was always happy to meet up, have a beer and hear what was going on. We have found ourselves uprooted from our normal patterns of social, work, family and now have to face the uncomfortable truth that self isolation, social distancing and an unknown future are what we are up against. This is not all doom in gloom however. We can choose the create the future we want by having a healthy mindset, ensuring we challenge our perspectives and generally be good humans. But it’s a choice. One we all have to make. Working from home is now more the norm and we are lucky to be in a world were we can respond this way. Our children will be home too and that should be seen a valuable time to shape their futures. Again, a health mindset is what is required to get through this on a mental wellbeing level. But our actions will speak louder than our words and #flattenthecurve matters here. Social distancing is a key thing that we know will help. Making smart choices here will help take the load off the healthcare systems and ensure we get through this and minimise the death toll as a result. Exposure is the only known control at this point while we wait to learn more as a vaccine is manufactured. Our livelihood are in question also as the markets take dive, business shut down and the way we spend money changes. Play Episode Listen Later Mar 5, 2020 12:36

I don’t often find myself in such a frustrated state of mind. I tend to be somewhat fragile when it comes to how the world works. Especially when I feel it is completely broken. At each turn of the wheel I find one more system in place to keep the masses in check. And around each corner is yet another trick up the marketing sleeve to ensure we part with our cash for the things we do not truly need. There has to be a moment in our history where it all made sense to set this all up the way that it is. Right? It had to make sense to the human race to fight for and divide up our planet so that groups of people at the top could horde all the wealth. Right? So they could say they own a thing and then tax you. And then tell you that you need a thing they own so they could take the money they pay you to work, back and then charge you tax for the effort counting their money. Right? There must have been a moment in our history where this all made sense. So far the moment in our history where this all made sense has eluded me. I have not put a historians effort to figure it all out, but I am trying. I will also concede that a lot of good also happened as a result of the argument I am placing before you. However I believe that the system in place no longer fits in the world we live in. That the simple fact that a select few can horde the wealth, and I’m talking more money that large parts of the planets collective wealth, seems more like a perversion of an antiquated system than by someone being able to innovate in todays age. Yes, there is macro-innovation, where by someone invents a thing that generates wealth. Or starts a business that makes them wealthy etc but is off the back of the system that is rigged to do so.So why all this complaining. Well, it is becoming more and more evident to me that our collective knowledge is sinking. Our copy cat culture keeps us from questions. The fear based media outlets keep us buying what the big businesses or governments need us to buy. That our lack of time to learn is fleeting and that the effort required to have an opinion these days comes in headlines with no fact checking or actual conviction. So in a weird way, this podcast is a call to action. A challenge to all who listen to be better. Do more and act in a responsible way. We often live our lives based on the lessons we were taught when we were young. Based on the ideas that were provided to us as part of the education we were given, as part of what our parents taught us, from what our mentors said to us. But it takes real guts to know when you are on the wrong path and seek to make the changes required to get you where you want to go. To know when that voice in your head is right and the denial you’ve been living off of should no longer be in the drivers seat.Today I sat down with Paul Caffin. I know Paul through my Crossfit box and over the last while gotten to know him a bit. But I was curious why a guy in Australia had decided to start his own mountain bike company. Primarily because I grew up mountain biking but also because it is a rare form of sport here Australia. Which is defiantly on the rise. But in the time I was working with him to get on the show he had also started the 75 Hard program which was ballsy as and we agreed to wait till he finished as that was something we could talk about as well.I was curious about the 75 hard program mainly because I love to challenge myself. I like to do hard things that stretch my mental game and when I look at what it takes to do the 75 hard program it’s right up my ally. Food for Thought #19 - Denial is not a river in Egypt.

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 27, 2020 15:36

Denial - “refusing to admit the truth or reality of something unpleasant”We have all had that moment when we had to make a choice between eating the cookie or not eating the cookie. Or putting the ice cream in a bowl or just eating the whole pint. In a way this is a form of denial. A denial we engage to manage a diet or to challenge our self-control. Either way, it’s a choice you are actively making because you are complicit in the decision and can see the upside of the outcomes of the choice. Personal denial can be a good thing here. When we engage in personal denial like this there is generally a higher outcome we are looking to achieve and in this sense it’s a great thing to be doing. So long as it’s healthy. If it is not healthy then you need to have a look at your measurement of the outcomes you are looking to achieve. As an example, not eating properly, or at all to just loose weight may work in a controlled way but in an uncontrolled way is just an unhealthy option of self denial. But I am not talking about personal denial when I mention the word denial. I have been know to say that one of my favourite drugs is denial. When I say this, I am talking about the type of denial which falls into the psychological category. The type of denial that when confronted with it you straight deny its existence or skip past the reality of. This is a dangerous mental gambit and one that many of us are subject to. To say you are not in denial about anything is an understatement in my book. But each to their own. I have often been challenged by my own denial of problems and have ran with the scissors for a long time just hoping it will all work out. If anyone where to skate to close to my issues or problems I would find a way to dance around it or bold face lie to them about things. The later was something I did a lifetime ago, but even still, I find myself hiding in a bit of denial every once in a while. My question around denial really has to do with the fact that there are two versions of psychological denial.  The bad version that I just described, and the version where you are active in the use of denial to achieve an outcome. This is why I talk about it like a drug. Mainly because I use denial to my advantage to work in difficult situations, life the life that I live, enter a room full of strangers and strike up conversations, you name it. There is not a moment where I am not using some form of denial to deal with complex situations. Let’s just take the example of walking into a room of strangers and being able to strike up a conversation. To do this I have to leverage denial around other views of me or what I am talking about in order to simply open the door and walk in. I have to leverage denial other ways too. Such as to how I might look or if I have even misread the room and acted in a way that does not work. No matter how I cut it, if I carry that mental baggage in it could possibly stop me from talking or even entering the room or going to the “thing” in the first place. So what talk about denial in the first place? Well I have been sort of in it a bit of recent. I am just coming to terms with an episode of denial around something that I hold dear and I am now in a place where I am going to try and do something about it. The weight of the doing is still there. I wish I was not in the position I am in, but I have to step up, own my shit and do something about it. Otherwise what is the point of carrying all these mental bags around? Why did I even waste my time to begin with? Whats the fucking point right! It’s also tied to the whole theory I have about getting whats only running on your inner monologue out. Because even if you are in denial, I believe you are still thinking about it. You know you are working against something yet you are sort of out of control about it all. But you know something is off. The trick is to know if it is you and if so, take some fucking responsibility for it!Links for Gazing into the Abyss!Podcast PageInstagramThanks everyone for listening! He has a great focus on building players up by focusing on their individual skills and has been coming to Australia for the last 3 years.Justin and I spent a fair bit of time focusing the impact of mindset and how it plays out but also dipped into the issues at play for coaches as well as individuals in todays age. I also brought up my issues around leadership and world that seems to be moving away from this due to fears of being trolled. Food for Thought #18 - Why don’t we say what we mean?

I have been putting a lot of effort into the crafting of a persona who speaks his mind. Someone who is fearless in the face of is said and what needs to be said. But even though I am working to do this. I still struggle. I find myself not acting on what I want to say. What I want to do. This perplexes me. Why are there times where I hold back. What is it that is so overwhelming that I would not just reach out and ask someone if they are ok? Or say that I don’t like what they are doing?Recently there have been a few pieces of news down here in Australia. One pieces was about a teenage boy on a train cursing and then being asked to stop. He then stood over some pensioners in a threatening manner and was then quickly accosted himself by a few other train goers. He was actually choked by one man and then stood over himself for a time. The second piece of news was about a local volunteer fire fighter who told the PM of Australia to get F*cked on the news. He’d been fighting fires and was obviously fatigues and mentally stressed. He subsequently got fired for the volunteer fire service and a whole bunch of internet support went his way. So much so that in his hometown as the local, people from all over the world are putting money down to buy him drinks. The owner said that he’d never pay for a drink again. So why these two weird stories? Why am I asking about why I hold back. Why society holds back. Well on the surface, we are now a very risk adverse culture. The internet has neutered our collective ability to speak our minds. Main for fear that we will offend someone. That the outcome will be bad for our selves and therefore we hold back. Then there is the massive misrepresentation of your efforts. It’s all just a mess. But the bottom line is there is help out there. That you dont need to be alone in your struggle. You can ask for help and should do early. Dont live in this pressure cooker waiting to explode. Thanks everyone for listening! I am keen to get questions from you so that I can adjust and do more with the show. I have to say I was somewhat blown away by this interview. Not because it was more or less than any of the other interview, but that there was this sort of depth and intimacy to it. Giv is an obvious professional. A capable person much like many of my guests. But also a confident person who is very much in tune with who she is and what she offers as a presence in a conversation. In retrospect I felt like I was sort of all over the place and it was Giv who kept me on track through this interview. I know this is just what I think and it is not necessarily the case. But it does speak to her ability to be present and in tune with the moment.Giverny Lewis is Sex therapist & Relationship Councillor. Food for Thought #17 - Sometimes starting is the hardest part.

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 13, 2020 13:40

We often sit in one place. Sort of stuck. Lacking the ability to move forward. Coming up with great excuses to not just do something. We all know what I’m talking about. Loosing weight, changing your diet, quoting smoking, drinking, changing your job or role, learning a new skill, asking for help. You name it, we all have the desire to change things. To step it up or move in some new direction. But we work against ourselves. We actually find ways to not start or if we do start, we tend to have a harsh failure based approach which gives us an easy out, or way to quit. Now you might be saying, fuck you Joe! I’m not like that! I have it all sorted out. I don’t suffer from motivation. And I will say back to you, great, but I am sure at one point you had to question this motivation. Ask yourself why you are doing it. Feel a sense of defeat. However, my argument is not that we lack the ability to to achieve things. My argument is that the simple act of starting something is the hardest part.Once you get moving. You find that “Why”. You are mostly set. The issue lies in the expectation that it will just happen. That if you buy running shoes you will automagically become a regular runner. That if you join a gym you will somehow loose weight. So while this is partially true, the deciding factor is your ability to persevere. To be agile in your approach. To measure yourself for success, not failure. Your view of what you want to become is like this romanticised thing. As an example, we would all love to join the gym and in a few month get the body of your idolised insta personality. The harsh truth is that there is shit tone of sacrifice to do this. Time, diet, lifestyle choices. You name it and it would ultimately have to be on the chopping block. The reality is that we all want something. We have goals we tell our selves. The ideas that will unlock the door and let us become the latest version of ourselves. We just don’t want to accept, nor put the work in to getting there. So my challenge for you is to remove all expectations in your pursuits. Set goals, yes! But engage in act of simply starting. Dance in the thought that the game is about moving forward in time. That the time required is liquid and you’ll know once you get there that the destination has been met. That once you get there, you recalibrate and set a new destination. Because at the end of the day, life is about the journey and not destination. It is only by being present in the journey that you will find your way, learn new things, see your achievements and set yourself up for success. So thats the deal humans! Get started and stick with it. You’ll do it in time. But be realistic about the amount of time it will take to get there. Because the more you get after what ever it is you want to start, the more the feeling of doing will happen. The better you will get at it. Because that the trick we want isn’t it? To feel like we did something? That while we here, we did more than we thought we were capable of.Thanks everyone for listening! Tim is a very interesting person in that he was once a KFC franchise guy, a police officer and now a coach to companies trying to get to the next level. It’s a fine art teaching leadership and it takes a leader to be courageous enough to do something like this. Tims journey in life lead him to the point where he was interested in working with leaders on being better leaders. He has spent quite a bit of time identifying the qualities of leadership and to be honest, has the balls to go into a company and let them know exactly what they lack in the leadership department. Food for Thought #16 - How does someone with imposter syndrome get unstuck?

Quite a lot has been running through my mind recently. Lots of activity. Lots of dialog. I came across a revelation which stemmed from a tweet that not all humans have an internal narrative. This was some what of a shock to me, but also some what revealing as well. The shock was mainly due to the fact that my assumption around this entire podcast had to do with the fact that we ALL have an inner narrative. Or Self Talk, as I reffer to it. But come to find out, some of us do not have this at all and that it manifests from abstract non-verbal thoughts is quite interesting. https://twitter.com/KylePlantEmoji/status/1221713792913965061To be honest it explains quite a lot about how many people deal with the world around them. Their own battle with their emotions and feelings. If I imagine being driving by abstract thought it really opens up how people respond to things. How they process. It most likely explains how people just don’t understand what you are explaining! Never the less, the more we know about how we operate mentally the better. I have also decided that my imposter syndrome needs to be dealt with. I have not been very active in various forums with my views and opinions around all of this. So today I actually decided to engage in a post on reddit which was around dealing with negativity, emotions and crying. https://www.reddit.com/r/emotionalintelligence/comments/ewjlss/how_do_you_get_yourself_to_accept_and_feel/fgk86zr/?context=3There are a few reasons I jumped in. One was I really felt for the user who posted. It’s a hard place to be when you loose a connection to your emotions. I know that I’ve felt that way and it weirded me out. Another reason was that I often talk myself out of posting my thoughts because I am not certified. I am not trained. My thoughts centre around the idea that I could damage someone with my brand of thinking. The final reason is the proof I could be wrong. That someone who knows will call me out and it will end this romance I have going with this podcast and all that I seem to value and believe. It could shake the foundations I so firmly stand on. But I have sort been pushed by a conversation, a book I am reading and the fact that I tell others not to feel this way. Yes, I know. I am fallible. I have chinks in my armour. But I am putting this out there so that I can no longer hide. I was giving one of my best mates advice on career moves and he mentioned that he got a bit of a blow in not being recognised as being at the level he thought he was. I felt it was a great opportunity to recalibrate, learn whats needed and then become a full Pokemon. He said Voltron. We agree to disagree on my analogy I guess. The point stands however. It does not matter if you get called out. It might just reset you enough to get you where you are going. With respect to the book I am reading, “Everything is F*cked” I need to have more hope in my routine. In my thinking. So in order to get moving I need get out of my own way, mentally, and just start going for it. So I hope that you’ve enjoyed this. It’s sort of a roller coaster of thinking and movements. Really it just boils down to a bit of hustle. But I think it’s time. Time to put myself out there and see how I measure up.Thanks everyone for listening! We often just keep moving along in life. Just existing. Getting up and doing that rat race. In some of us the misery of life kicks in. You become cynical. You only exist to do the bare minimum and get back home. Because that’s your safe place. But some of us go the other way. We are not satisfied with the cynical life. We strive for more and we push our selves to achieve some sort of mythical success. When I spoke with Phil Martin, it was more about the art of finding a balance. There is life and family and there is work. But when you focus on what you want from it all there is sort of clarity to it all. When your focus is on solving problems and building cool things, it opens up the whole work experience. I would even argue that when you get it right, there is no work. There is just living. And that is what it was like with Phil. He is honest in what he looking to achieve in life. He knows that there is an easy way and a hard way. I just finished a few things. I finished the book The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck and I also finished watching Killer Inside: The Mind of Aaron Hernandez. There are a lot of things swirling around my head at the moment. One of which is was that I had no real intention to read the book. Mainly because I was concerned it would change me or prove that I was somehow wrong. That while the outside world looked at me and said this book was written about me would be wrong and that I was someone an imposter. I know right!? The guy who’s been talking to you about self talk and getting your thoughts out so that you cannot hide from them. Yeah, even he struggles with these issues. One I read the book, I could not put it down. Initially it was because I am on this plan to read 10 pages a day. Because I am a slack ass and never read. I also want to work my muscle more and have converted this into doing a daily job for my brain. So far this year I have read more than I have not. Some weekends get missed. Often times in your life you look ahead. Especially when you are young and have those big dreams. You can never really see the finer details of how you will achieve them specifically. What they will look like. Where you will achieve them. But dreams that become real life are not often realised. In this episode of Unplug Your Self, we talk to John Kennedy Jr (JFK) and walk through his journey as an ice hockey player, his dream to bring the best hockey academy in the world to the sport and then building on that dream in Australia. Where the resident hockey population is smaller. But also a great place to hustle, build a business and achieve your dream. JFK didn’t not get an easy shake of the dice with his career of growing up as a hockey player. When he was at his best he hit roadblocks. When he was done and ready to hang up the skates he got sage advice from his brother and a great opportunity to get an education and play the game he loves. His focus and persistence is admirable and he is the kind of guy you want in any room. Just doing what he does. He even kicked into asking me what I was trying to get out of this podcast and where I was hoping to take it. A nice little shake up. Thanks everyone for listening! I have often caught myself thinking about moments that define a persons life. Not all moments need to be kill your mother and father, become batman, but thats not to say many moments can’t be transformational in a persons life. Mainly in hindsight, you are able to look back at those defining moments. Unless you are totally self aware, emotionally intelligent and a prophet are you able to know you are in one. You’d also need to have known you were in one before to really know! None the less my mind often thinks of being present. When I was a kid my Dad took the whole family to this group family counselling seminar. There were sessions where the family went, where the kids went and where the adults went. It was held at this cool hotel and remember being impressed by the fact that my parents got a room for the kids with an adjoining room for themselves. With that joining door inside. It was also the first time I shaved. I was maybe 12? And the TV channel situation was off the hook. But that’s not why we were there. We were there for some other reason. One I am not sure of today, other than to oil the family machine. Possibly some sort of get better MLM like thing. Oh shit! I also got to have coffee! My first real coffee of my own. My dad pushed my step mum to let me. He only did that a few times. Otherwise she was in control of how we grew up. But yeah, it was all trust falls and learning a language for the family to use as a take away. Looking back, it was all sort of gimmicky and safe. But the things I recall and still use to this day is “Being Present” and “Letting things go”. Those two concepts stuck with me. To this day I am very much a person who is invested and present in the moment. When I am not, it is quite obvious to me. I am irritated. And that is a trigger for me to flip the switch. I only learned this later in life, but I still use this to this day. In combination of letting what ever is irritating me, go. This combination is massive and can oil the human experience in a way that allows you to get as much as possible from any moment. For example, I may not want to work on this project, but that does not mean that I need to be right about its direction. I can let it go, be present in the moment, and use influence to move it in a more comfortable direction. I may also not want to talk about something. For instance, it could make me uncomfortable to talk about a certain topic but I know in my mind that it must be spoken about. I would need to let what ever is stopping me so that I can be present in that conversation to maximise the outcomes and ensure that my role in moving forward to done well. So that all parties involved can move and evolve past what ever is going on. Hence why I bring this all up. Today my son won his second national club water polo championship in a row. A massive feat. The team he was on was dominant and he was part of that. In the final game he played all of 30 seconds and I know in the past this sort of thing would have upset him. Today however, he was in it. Present. He had to let go of his desire to play in order to be present and in the that moment so that he could enjoy every minute of it. I sent him some text after I watched the live stream and congratulated him. He has achieved so much more than I did at his age. It amazes me. I did mention the 30 seconds of play but to remind him that it was amazing none the less. His response, YTBS. I had no idea what that meant so I guessed. “Yeah, total bull shit”. I was wrong. It was a typo and was meant to be “YTB. Yeah the Boys!”. I brought that baggage to him and he said naw mate. Not today. I’m just happy for the team!

So I just finished watching Marriage Story (https://www.netflix.com/title/80223779) on Netflix. It’s a great take on the break down of marriage and the flow on effects. The ways in which a divorce will typically unfold. The impact to your children. The emotions from the beginning, during the fall out and post divorce. It is incredibly made and resonates so close to my heart. It spoke the words I did not say to my ex wife and it absolutely had my heart when it comes to the father in the breakdown of family. I have been on a relationships kick of recent however. Marriage Story was just another perspective to add to the heap. Just prior to this, I was watching the Kevin Hart doco, Dont F**k this Up (https://www.netflix.com/title/81010817). In this he talks about relationships with his father and the management of a bond with another person. That it is something you have to work on. That you can have relationships, but the work really happens when you create that bond and do the maintenance/work to keep it. I myself lack a bond with my parents. Or so I think. I love them. I think of them. But I do very little to keep in contact. To maintain ties with them. So much so that I live on the other side of the planet from them. I have the excuse of timezones and expensive flights and commitments which take my time up. Is this a good thing? A bad thing? I am not sure. The bad side of it is represented in my insecurities with my own children. That they don’t have a real relationship with me. Cause I am Disneyland dad and not the full time parent. Ironically I do not call them all the time. I do when I want to talk to them, but it is not all the time. But I work with them as much as I can. I get deep with them. I talk to them on both my and their level and I hide very little from them. So much so that I had a moment where I was nervous to talk to my eldest son about the concept of our relationship and our bond. We were both watching the Kevin Hart thing together and it sort of got me thinking and I wanted to ask him what he thought of our relationship. So one night when I was driving him home from water polo I built up the courage to ask him. I wasn’t sure what to expect but I was happy none the less. Primarily because my son felt he could speak to me and tell me his truth. So what is a bond? Is it the definition of a long lasting relationship? I think it is. I am quite selective with those who I choose to focus on. Those who get time from me. There is a reciprocation that exists between myself and the human in my sights. I invest and seek to know that person at a deeper level. I go beyond them and into what they are and ask them the hard questions. I look to share and understand their interests. Even if it is simply give them shit about it. But it’s the work that matters. Something we all have to stop and do. So get out there humans. Look at the people close to you. Dig deep into that relationship and work on those bonds. Because at the end of the day, it’s a fundamental part about our makeup to have relationships and bonds with others so we can share and love and feel loved. Thanks everyone for listening! Food for Thought #12 - Filter your water! You can’t just drink from the stream.

When I was a kid water wasn’t such a big deal. You drank out of the tap. Any tap for that matter. We lived in the Rocky Mountains! Essentially the place that people went to get that glacial bottled water. Well in my mind that was the case because I tasted that Evian water and I thought the water out of the sink was nicer. But even still I was warned to not drink water from the streams or rivers. That that water was off limits due to the potential of getting Giardia. However, one day, when it was especially hot and my friends I were riding our bikes on the bike path between towns I was super thirsty. We stopped at the the stream we were occasionally riding over and I dared to drink that water. Full well knowing that I could get sick. There was a conversation between us as too if it would make me sick. It was the general consensus that a little bit would be fine. So I drank some. Now this does not have the dire ending I am leading to. I was fine, but I was worried for some time after. I also learned a valuable lesson. Sometimes, you are going to make mistakes. In this instance I didn’t fill up my water bottle before I left. To this day, I am well prepared to be hydrated in any instance. But the bigger lesson is that even though I didn’t get sick from doing something that I knew was not safe, I did it anyway and in doing this I potentially opened a door in my mind to make it ok to do this again. Now I am wired to shut these doors. But as an analogy, this represents a view of the world we live in today. The internet is very much a body of water and not all of it is safe to drink. Yet we do. All this climate change activist stuff and the government response to it seems off to me. Why would the government, local or national, care if people protest? Outside of violent protest, I can’t see the issue. Outside of the obvious, why would any government care if a group believe in a world that is ending as a result of lack of action on the part of the government? The world is ever more on fire and this is less and less to do with climate. It is to do with the general unrest in society. The unbalance we all face and the mouse in the maze feeling we all seem be feeling. Whether you know it or not, you are being puppeted by something or someone. Which reminds me! It would seem that path we all want to achieve in life is one that often feels so far out of reach. This looks like financial security on the outset and the ability to achieve this requires learning quite a lot about the way the world works. Specifically around work, money, life balance, love and time. How ever once you learn the basics you need to then gain a level of mastery of each in order to take advantage of each stream to generate that road to the dreams you have. If any one or all of them fall apart it’s basically a restart or at least quite a few steps back in order to go forward again. If it wasn’t starting to play Ice Hockey, it was starting a new business. If it wasn’t starting a new business it was enthusiasm for a new idea. If Jamie was intrigued and wanted to get in to it, he simply did. One other interesting aspect of who Jamie is to me is his want and desire to make things. I’ve not told him this, but I am quite impressed by the fact that instead of simply getting a dorky hat as the game MVP hand out, he crafted this bear claw, viking like helm, from scratch. That, he learns how to build a water septic system so that he can treat grey water and devises a plan and exhausts all options in his pursuit of solving a problem.
