This week Derek is joined by Anders Morgenstierne, who has returned to WAYDID to discuss an obscure war from Danish history. Most Danes don't even know about this war - and that's because for most of history, no one in Denmark realized that it happened. During the period, Copenhagen was attacked twice and most of the Danish navy was destroyed. Despite all of that, for this particular war - which lasted 172 years and makes it the longest European war in history, there was not one single casualty.Enjoy this episode and don't forget this bizarre piece of history for your next pub quiz or Danish citizenship exam. This episode was inspired by a listener email. Have you ever heard the story of how Denmark could have had all the North Sea Oil reserves that Norway enjoys, if it wasn't for a sloppy negotiation by a drunken Danish diplomat? It's been recounted to Derek many times, ironically by intoxicated Danes who have a good laugh at their tipsy foreign policy - but how true is this story? Jeff Bond sits down to hear the real history behind this often-repeated story. Just where did the idea come from that a Danish diplomat was negotiating undersea oil fields with a belly full of booze and gave it all away to Norway for nothing? This episode explores what's true, what's embellished, and what's completely made up in this old story of Danish diplomacy.Have something you want us to explore in a future episode? Denmark struggles to retain internationals, with 64% leaving within five years and only 28% of international graduates staying post-graduation. In this episode, Brooke Black, Conrad Molden, and Derek Hartman dive into why so many expats leave Denmark, the cultural and systemic barriers they face, and what it means for Denmark's aging population and economy. This episode explores how the €7 billion Fehmarn Belt Tunnel project is attracting internationals to Lolland and the municipality's innovative Job-to-Partner program, which helps trailing partners integrate and find jobs. Could this be a model for national change? Is Lolland's approach the key to turning the tide or does Denmark need a cultural shift to make internationals feel at home? Join Brooke, Conrad, and Derek for a look at big questions about language barriers, hiring biases, and how Denmark can create a more inclusive society to retain the talent it needs. This week, Brooke shares a disturbing story of how the use of Fabreeze air-freshener sparked conflict with her Danish husband. Like any couple would want, we brought their issues to this podcast for public debate and ridicule. At the core of the issue is whether scented products are appropriate or should be avoided at all costs. We have noticed, with no scientific evidence, that Danes seem to be more sensitive to smells and scented products than people in our homelands. Is there data to back this up, or are they just more vocal about their displeasure and aversion to anything but a neutral scented product?Derek found several studies that shed a little bit of light on the subject as well as action taken by the government in the last decade that could be influencing how Danes respond and react to perfumes and other scented products. Conrad shares some of his experiences with odors and scents in Denmark, specifically on Danish trains and in nightclubs. How does smoking play a role in all of this?We get to the bottom of it all and have plenty of laughs along the way. Comedian Ira Sylvester returns to WAYDID for a hilarious conversation about how to drive a Dane crazy. Derek and Ira break down some unwritten rules of social etiquette in Denmark that are often violated by unaware foreigners. Derek explains how his personal preferences have flipped while living in Denmark and that many of the rules he used to break are now dreadfully important to maintain. Ira gets deep and personal about the many facades that we put forth in life, including how the way we act in front of the Danes may be different than the way we act in front of our national kinfolk. In the process he also critiques Derek's podcast persona versus his out-of-studio persona using a dose of British nicety and the Danish directness. This is part one of the discussion, make sure to follow the podcast to catch part 2 and help us grow the show by sharing it with a friend! For more clips and tips on living in Denmark and follow us on social media:What Are You Doing in Denmark podcast: Instagram: https://instagram.com/waydidpodWatch all episodes of What Are You Doing in Denmark on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLFCSH6KqKooZmSx1GJu9CWZYjX8esjl2FDerek Hartman: Instagram: https://instagram.com/robetrottingYouTube: https://youtube.com/c/robetrottingTikTok: https://tiktok.com/@robetrottingFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/robetrottingIra Sylvester:Instagram: https://instagram.com/irasylvesterofficialFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/IraSylvesterOfficial/ Hosted on Acast. This week Mike and Derek discuss the growing trend of hostility against tourists and the factors behind over-tourism. This includes a new program Copenhagen is testing to incentivize sustainable tourism and good behavior from visitors to the city. But is this initiative as altruistic as it seems, or a McKinsey consultant's wet dream and a solution in search of a problem. Plus, what are anti-tourism "activists" with water guns really upset about?Don't forget to share this podcast with any friends who have made the move to Denmark. For more clips and tips on living in Denmark and follow us on social media:What Are You Doing in Denmark podcast: Instagram: https://instagram.com/waydidpodWatch these episodes on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLFCSH6KqKooZmSx1GJu9CWZYjX8esjl2FDerek Hartman: Instagram: https://instagram.com/robetrottingYouTube: https://youtube.com/c/robetrottingTikTok: https://tiktok.com/@robetrottingFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/robetrotting Hosted on Acast. Mike Walsh is back this week to tell us a story about the time when Denmark won the European Football Championship. The story harkens back to the summer of 1992, when a non-qualifying Danish national football team was activated to play in the Euros and scraped their way to the championship. Mike retells the story in all of its glory, with interesting historical context, and correct the record on aspect that the movie version of this tale exaggerates.Don't forget to share this podcast with any friends who have made the move to Denmark. For more clips and tips on living in Denmark and follow us on social media:What Are You Doing in Denmark podcast: Instagram: https://instagram.com/waydidpodWatch these episodes on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLFCSH6KqKooZmSx1GJu9CWZYjX8esjl2FDerek Hartman: Instagram: https://instagram.com/robetrottingYouTube: https://youtube.com/c/robetrottingTikTok: https://tiktok.com/@robetrottingFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/robetrottingMike Walsh:Instagram: https://instagram.com/phillymike999LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/michael-walsh-2722a131/ Hosted on Acast.
