Foreign affairs journalist Peter Fabricius joins John Maytham to unpack South Africa’s recent diplomatic visit to Washington. Led by Dirco’s Zane Dangor, the delegation met with senior US officials to address concerns about the Expropriation Act and clarify Pretoria’s broader policy agenda. Fabricius explains how the meetings countered US misconceptions, shaped by lobbying from groups like AfriForum, and reaffirmed South Africa’s constitutional commitment to equity, land reform and the rule of law. The discussion also touches on SA’s G20 priorities and the complex state of US–SA relations.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The pilgrim has been attracted by one soul, calling out his examples of Mary, Fabricius, and Nicholas to counter his own sins of avarice.Dante steps closer and inquires who this soul is. He finds himself in front of Hugh Capet, the legendary (and historical) founder of the Capetian dynasty of French kings. Or at least a version of said Hugh Capet, since Dante the poet flubs the historicity of his penitent.Join me, Mark Scarbrough, as we explore this fascinating look at the second major figure on the fifth terrace of Mount Purgatory. If you'd like to help underwrite the fees associated with this unsupported podcast, whether with a one-time donation or a small on-going contribution, please visit this link at Paypal. Here are the segments for this episode of WALKING WITH DANTE:[01:50] My English translation of the passage: PURGATORIO, Canto XX, Lines 40 - 60. In late 1599, William Harvey, having completed his B.A. at Cambridge, sought further education abroad. His father, a successful businessman, funded his journey to Padua, a renowned center of medical learning. At Padua, Harvey encountered the teachings of Aristotle, particularly the idea of understanding the "final cause" of things, which influenced his approach to medicine. He also studied under Hieronymous Fabricius, who combined Aristotelian philosophy with detailed dissections, shaping Harvey's future medical practices. Pressure is growing from the West on the South African government, because of its close relationship with Russia. President Cyril Ramaphosa is said to be sending an envoy to the US to discuss its relationship with Russia. Foreign Policy Analyst Peter Fabricius told BizNews that the South African government is concerned about losing the benefits of its inclusion in the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA). AGOA allows Sub-Saharan countries to export products to the United States without tariffs. South Africa contributes the majority of AGOA exports at 56%. Fabricius says South Africa and the Russian leader are likely to wriggle out of the sticky situation of being forced to arrest Putin if he sets foot on South African soil for the BRICS summit. The International Criminal Court has issued an arrest warrant for the Russian President for war crimes in Ukraine. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

3.29 Don't Take a Shrimp Coupon to JCPenny's w/ Guest Alison Fabricius Alison and I begin by talking about her book that came out recently, "Unapologetically Alison" and how we can live our lives without having to feel guilty or judged about everything we do. We wander over from that topic onto the meaning of some words, including "redeemed" and I bring up coupons, and we talk about how we can turn our potential into permanence and how you shouldn't take a shrimp coupon to JCPenny's. When have you been unapologetically you? Have you ever taken a shrimp coupon to JCPenny's? We also talk about how a vision board is basically just coupon cutting what you want in your life and using it as a focal point to turn the potential to achieve the thing into the permanence of having it or accomplishing it. We also go on a couple of tangents, but have a really fun time with it and actually bring them around to make good points. What was the best coupon you ever used? What random wisdom do you enjoy bestowing on others? Be sure to listen to today's episode and check out Alison's website to be able to learn more about how to be unapologetically you and how she can help you with that and more. Remember, you can rewrite your stars and live your life exactly how YOU want to, and create things in it that you can enjoy and share with others. Roman Parallel - Marius (157-86 BC)Important PeopleDemetrius (337-283) - Neighbor and even, for a time, brother-in-law. Son of Antigonus I and father of Antigonus II, Demetrius rules in Greece, Macedon (for seven years), Asia Minor but was ultimately conquered by Seleucus and imprisoned until he died of his own drinking habit.Cassander (355-297) - Son of Antipater, who had served as regent of Macedon during Alexander's campaigns and later served as regent after the death of Perdiccas, he did not inherit the Macedonian throne from his father but had to fight Polyperchon for it. He conquers Greece as well and, most infamously, ends the charade of the successors serving as satraps to a regent by killing the young Alexander IV and his mother and grandmother, Olympias.Ptolemy I Soter (367-282) - The stable successor to Alexander who carves out Egypt (305 BC) for himself and founds a dynasty that rules Egypt from the prosperous port of Alexandria until Julius Caesar's arrival. Ptolemy also strategic in his dynastic alliances to stave off further wars.Cineas - Philosopher and orator, Cineas acts as a foil to Pyrrhus's reckless moving from hope to hope. In the midpoint of this life, he attempts to help Pyrrhus think through why he should be driven from conquest to conquest and provides reflection on Pyrrhus's accomplishments. Nevertheless, the philosopher accompanies him on all Pyrrhus's expeditions.Fabricius - Our first direct encounters with Roman virtue. While not given his own biography, Fabricius looms large in contrast to Pyrrhus's vices. Fabricius is stable, cautious, and dependable where Pyrrhus is reckless, overly optimistic, and flighty.Important PlacesEpirus - Pyrrhus's birthplace and kingdom by right, inheritance, and conquest.Macedon - Neighboring kingdom to Epirus. Pyrrhus manages to win it and lose it without a fight. Rome - The new power in the Western Mediterranean, having risen even more recently than Carthage, now threatens the entire Italian peninsula, including the Greek-speaking colonies in the south. Tarentum - The colony that asks Pyrrhus for help, and then quickly comes to regret asking. Beneventum - The battle in which the Romans manage, not exactly to beat Pyrrhus, but to convince him that Italy won't be worth the fight. Key Vices and VirtuesExcessive Appetite for Conquest (πλεονεξία) - Not a vice in the Aristotelian canon, but one important to historians like Thucydides, who saw it as the root of the Athenian downfall. This Life becomes a meditation on knowign one's political limits and serving in the capacity one has been placed. The philosopher Cineas provides some of this perspective for us without being too heavy-handed.Justice - Once again ignored by most of Alexander's successors, we do se key aspects of it lived up to by the Romans. It is called the virtue of kings in this life and one philosopher observes that the Roman Senate strikes him as “An Assembly of Kings.” When Justice and Power are joined, Plutarch sees not only a properous state nor even just a stable situation, but a good government promoting virtue in its people. This life sets us up so well to enter into the Roman story, because Plutarch wants to remind even the Romans of their past virtues and encourage them to live up to those old virtues in the height of their power.Support the show

South Africa's Department of International Relations and Cooperation (Dirco) recognises that it needs to focus more on economic diplomacy, including upskilling its diplomats to promote trade and investment. But this work needs to go further if South Africa is to pursue a foreign policy fit for economic growth and prosperity. There is a broad consensus that it needs to better coordinate the different elements - including business - which have a role to play in economic diplomacy, broadly defined. One way of doing this, according to Peter Fabricius, would be to merge Dirco and the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition into one department managing South Africa's economic relations. That would be a big step towards a SA Inc. And it might free trade from the dubious grip of industrial policy makers. Marie-Noelle caught up with the veteran journalist to find out more. The idea for this conversation came from a discussion paper Peter wrote for the Foundation, which you can read here. This is one of my very favorite Podcasts here at the Velvet Hammer. I interviewed my very good friend and former South African Special Forces soldier David Fabricius on the topic of wolves, sheep and sheepdogs. There are "good wolves" according to David and it is a very powerful concept. He is also an American citizen by choice and he speaks of America and the threats to her. I endorse his message and share his perspectives. Thank you David Fabricius!
In this episode historian of science and technology Günther Oestmann discusses his research on astronomical clocks and the recent publication of his book, The Astronomical Clock of Strasburg Cathedral (Brill, 2020). He also speaks on his ongoing research on collections of horoscopes and shares some details of his current research on the astrological diary of the German astronomer David Fabricius (1564-1617).
