In this episode of Building Better with Brandon Bartneck, Felix Leach, Associate Professor at the University of Oxford, and Nick Molden, CEO of Emissions Analytics, join the discussion on sustainable transportation. The conversation emphasizes the critical role of mass and distance in determining the environmental impact of transportation, highlighting these as the most important variables for sustainability. Felix and Nick also advocate for a radical reset in public policy and taxation systems to simplify and better align with environmental realities. They discuss the interconnectedness of the transportation ecosystem, the role of consumer choices, and actionable steps toward a more sustainable future. About Building Better: Building Better with Brandon Bartneck focuses on the people, products, and companies creating a better tomorrow, often in the transportation and manufacturing sectors. Previously called the Future of Mobility podcast, the show features real, human conversations exploring what leaders and innovators are doing, why and how they're doing it, and what we can learn from their experiences. Topics include manufacturing, production, assembly, autonomous driving, electric vehicles, hydrogen and fuel cells, leadership, and more. Key Takeaways: Mass and distance are the two most important variables in determining transportation sustainability. Simplicity on the far side of complexity is crucial for effective policies. Current vehicle taxation systems are overly complex and need a reset. Transportation policy must reflect true environmental costs. Consumer choices significantly influence environmental outcomes. Public engagement and education are vital for achieving change. Chapters: 00:00 Introduction to Critical Mass and Its Importance 05:29 Understanding Vehicle Mass and Environmental Impact 08:32 Navigating Complexity in Transportation Decisions 11:29 Proposed Solutions for Vehicle Taxation 14:31 The Role of Mass in Vehicle Technology Comparison 17:42 Resetting the Transportation Policy Framework 25:56 Rethinking Vehicle Taxation 32:52 Simplifying Consumer Choices 39:06 The Moral Debate on Driving 42:52 Defining System Boundaries 46:13 Closing Thoughts and Future Directions About the Guests: Felix Leach is an Associate Professor at the University of Oxford, specializing in emissions and efficiency in thermal propulsion systems. Felix is the author of Racing Toward Zero and co-author of Critical Mass, which advocates for a simplified understanding of vehicles' environmental impact. Nick Molden is the CEO of Emissions Analytics, a company he founded in 2011 to assess the holistic environmental impact of vehicles. I'm excited to share my discussion with Coach Terrence Brown Jr. Coach Terrence is the Defensive Backs Coach at the University of Cal. Here is information about his playing and coaching career. I'm in my third season as a defensive backs coach at Cal in 2024. I have spent 11 seasons in the Pac-12 as a player and coach, including the last two seasons at Cal (2002-23) and five campaigns over two stints on the coaching staff at Washington (2015-17, '20-21). I also played collegiately in the league for four seasons at Stanford (2009-12). I also coached at Vanderbilt (2018-19) in between my stints at Washington. In addition, I was among a group of 30 coaches on 247Sports' 30Under30 list in both 2019 and 2020. Coached Patrick McMorris who was selected in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL Draft by the Miami Dolphins after posting strong numbers (90 tackles, 4.5 TFL, 1.0 SK, 1 INT, 8 PBU, 2 FR, 2 FF) and Craig Woodson (81 tackles, 3.5 TFL, 1 INT, 4 PBU, 2 FF) who earned his second straight honorable mention All-Pac-12 selection. In 2022 I coached, Daniel Scott a fifth-round selection of the Indianapolis Colts in the 2023 NFL Draft after being a third-team All-Pac-12 pick of Phil Steele and Pro Football Focus as a 2022, as well as Jeremiah Earby a second-team College Football News Freshman All-American, and all three honorable mention All-Pac-12 selections of the league's coaches. At Washington, I coached a pair of 2021 first-team All-Pac-12 defensive backs in Kyler Gordon and Trent McDuffie, while Elijah Molden was a first-teamer in 2020 when McDuffie earned second-team honors. I coached four Huskies currently on NFL rosters in Gordon (Chicago), McDuffie (Kansas City), Molden (Tennessee), and Keith Taylor Jr. (Kansas City), with McDuffie a first-round pick and No. 22 overall selection of the Chiefs in the 2022 NFL Draft while Gordon was taken in the second round (No. 39 overall) by Chicago, Molden was a third-round pick (No. 100 overall) of the Titans in 2021 and Taylor Jr. a fifth-round selection of Carolina also in 2021. As a graduate assistant, I coached a pair of All-Americans in Budda Baker and Sidney Jones, while working with a long list of future NFL defensive backs in addition to Baker and Jones including Kevin King, Jordan Miller, Byron Murphy, Taylor Rapp, Keith Taylor Jr. and Zeke Turner, with Husky defensive backs earning five first-team All-Pac-12 honors during the period. At Vanderbilt, I coached second-team All-Southeastern Conference selection Joejuan Williams in 2018 when Williams led all SEC cornerbacks in interceptions (4), while also pacing all of the league's players in pass breakups (14) and passes defended (18) before he was selected by New England in the second round (No. 45 overall) of the 2019 NFL Draft. In this episode of Conversations on Climate, Chris Caldwell sits down with Nick Molden, the CEO of Emissions Analytics, to discuss the dark side of electric vehicles (EVs), the importance of data integrity, and the future of transportation. Nick, a self-proclaimed data-driven environmentalist, shares his insights on the parallels between the dieselgate scandal and the current climate change debate, and the challenges of balancing human progress with environmental sustainability. They also delve into the complexities of tire emissions, the benefits and drawbacks of synthetic fuels, and the potential of nuclear power as a solution to the CO2 problem. This thought-provoking conversation aims to answer the question Why Electric Vehicles Are NOT The Future (Yet)? and the answers will leave you questioning the assumptions you have about the future of transportation and the role of data in shaping environmental policy. Stay tuned in to learn more!   …and what's happened for 30 years is we've offshored CO2 production… it's just being produced in other countries. We have moved things progressively offshore in this perverse world where you set something up as a metric which you know is not true. You lead to perverse outcomes, and it's exactly the same as diesel. You set up a test, a measure which you knew to be wrong. I have no doubt if if the European authorities were sufficiently dogged about it, they could force every vehicle on the road to be electric. Question is, at what price? So if we were to scrap all the environmental things today, it would be great for today and terrible for people tomorrow…   Highlights: 00:02 Challenges in sourcing uranium and handling its depletion and waste. 02:30 Environmental progress through technological advance 07:26 Uncertainty about legality of defeat devices in Asia 09:47 Electric vehicles are not zero emission 14:12 Europe's regulatory approach is driven by politics and industry ties 16:45 Data collection and analysis challenges in complex systems 20:52 Tires pose complex problems for all vehicles 22:47 Tires from cars contribute to global environmental pollution. 26:40 Properly pricing externalities can lead to more environmentally friendly choices 28:39 Paying a proper price generates revenue for investing in new technologies or compensating those affected. 32:33 Focus shifting towards reducing environmental impact in manufacturing phase 34:41 Nuclear power can be used to create synthetic liquid fuels. 38:20 Europe's strong push towards electric vehicles may face challenges in reality 40:22 UK manufacturing industry requests £7.7 billion in subsidies for 270,000 electric vehicle sales. 44:29 Transition to 100% electric vehicles requires massive investment and is currently unpalatable. 46:27 Shifting from private cars to public transport may require a greater increase in public transport provision. 50:25 Impact of electrification on European Auto industry competitiveness 52:20 China's advantage in EV supply chains to Europeans 56:18 Offshored CO2 production leading to misleading CO2 reduction claims. 58:24 Setting up inaccurate metrics leads to perverse incentives and undesirable outcomes.   References: https://www.emissionsanalytics.com/management-team https://www.linkedin.com/in/nick-molden-9958331/recent-activity/all/?trk=author-info__article-link   This episode of Conversations on Climate is a podcast brought to you in association with UNITED RENEWABLES and recorded at Imperial College London.
