In observance of International Holocaust Rememberance Day (Jan. 27) we're listening to and discussing Silent Tears: The Last Yiddish Tango, the acclaimed 2023 CD with new music and songs based on poetry and other writing by several women who are, or were, Holocaust survivors in Toronto. These songs recall their terrible and traumatic experiences during the Holocaust, including sexual abuse and torture. Some of the songs were collected and adapted by Dr. Paula David, a social worker, from a group of survivors in the Terrace Holocaust Survivors Group at the Baycrest Centre for Geriatric Care in Toronto who wrote poetry together to deal with their trauma. Others were adapted from the diary of Molly Applebaum, a Holocaust survivor in Toronto. The music, which is mostly new for this CD, is performed by Toronto's Payadora Tango Ensemble along with several soloists. Our guest to discuss Silent Tears is Vicky Ash-Shifris. She lives in Jerusalem and works as a Yiddish teacher and translator. She translated four of the songs on the CD into Yiddish. The cruelty of Nazism and the horror of the Holocaust are portrayed in the project "Silent tears", through the living memory of the victims, illuminating poems and songs that are being presented in different countries, as Dan Rosenberg, co-creator of this project, explains. In front of those horrors and the ones currently faced by many people(s), the beauty of music does not seem to be a very powerful weapon, but it is, because it reminds us that another world is possible. We are accompanied by music from Iberian, Azeri, Kurdish, Canadian, Peruvian, Cuban, Italian, Senegalese, Malian, Burkinabe, Finnish, Moroccan and French lands. • Matthieu Saglio - Elevation [+ Alim Qasimov] - Voices • Saîdê Goyî - Jinê - Jinê • Payadora Tango Ensemble - A victim of Mengele [+ Lenka Lichtenberg] - Silent tears: The last Yiddish tango • Juan Pastor / Chinchano - Wayrapa yuyay - Cachito • Raúl Gutiérrez and His Cuban Big Band - Guaguancó margarito - Puente special • Eliades Ochoa - Pajarito voló [+ Rubén Blades] - Guajiro • Val Bonetti - Ayo nèe ne [+ Cheikh Fall] - A world of Lullabies • Faso Kan - Npogotiginin - Tungaladen • Sapho & Kasbah Rockers - Dabayji [+ Bill Laswell] - The Sheikha tracks remastered • (Raúl Gutiérrez and his Cuban Big Band - Oye cómo va - Puente special) Imagen / Image: De la portada de: / Part of the cover of: Payadora Tango Ensemble - Silent tears: The last Yiddish tango

Peter Mehlman went from writing sports to writing Seinfeld and gave us characters and catchphrases we'll never forget. In this episode, comedian Dan Rosenberg interviews Peter about his journey from playing basketball in college to writing some of the funniest moments on one of the funniest shows ever written. After years on staff writing for Seinfeld in New York, he went moved to sunnier skies and palm trees, writing for another hit show, “It's Like, You Know," and has even written a few books in recent years. Catch up with Dan & Peter and have a few laughs along the way in today's episode: “The Catch Phrases” Born in Queens, New York. Attended the University of Maryland. Interned, then worked at The Washington Post. Wrote & produced the TV series “SportsBeat” with the great Howard Cosell. Freelance magazine writer in New York. He moved to Los Angeles in 1989, bumped into his friend Larry David. Showed him a humor piece he wrote for the New York Times. Jerry Seinfeld liked it too and yada yada yada, he gets on the show.  Peter wrote and produced Seinfeld for six year. He's best known for his classic Seinfeld-isms: “Spongeworthy,” “shrinkage,” and “double-dipping.” He joined DreamWorks in 1997 and created the TV show “It's Like, You Know…,” a scathing look at life in Los Angeles. He punched up the animated kid flick Madagascar and gets a hypochondriacal giraffe named after him. He's still writing. Screenplays, novels, op-eds, lists. He dabbles in stand-up and doodles subconsciously. He shoots hoops and lives in LA with his dog Ike. Dan Rosenberg was born in a tiny suburb of Pittsburgh Pennsylvania called Beaver Falls (more like a suburb of that suburb called Chippewa Township) and lived in the third unit of a duplex. His father was a self employed auto parts peddler that loved baseball and apple pie with cheese on it. He would often work late in his parts store trying to invent things that already existed, like the telephone or thumb tacks. His mother was a florist, an artist and a part time immigration attorney focusing on citizens of Armenia and West Virginia. He graduated in the upper 10% of the lower third of his high school class and was an active member of the "Tall Guy's That Can't Play Hoops" club as well as the Jazz Band, where he was fourteenth chair tenor tuba. Several years ago, he walked into a comedy club and his life was forever changed. “The club was also a cult and they ‘recruited' me to serve as their light bulb changer.” He's done stand-up comedy and writing ever since. he's written several spec scripts, like, "Curb Your Enthusiasm," "The Office," and a killer "Too Close for Comfort." ("Monroe Gets a Job") He's also written for several radio shows as well as two books. The first "The Book on Hosting: How Not to Suck as an Emcee" and "The Book on Vacuums: The Joke Sometimes Writes Itself.” Check out Dan's comedy special on Amazon Prime.

Producent är Dan Rosenberg i New York. Chava Alberstein kallas Israels Joan Baez. Susanne Sznajderman-Rytz sjunger själv i programmet. Spellista: TULCHIN Alfred Schnittke, musik. We just wrapped up our third season of our podcast series Afropop Closeups, and it may have been the best season yet. Afropop producers traveled from watching reggae artists in chilly Berlin to Thomas Mapfumo’s triumphant return concert in Harare, Zimbabwe. They witnessed how digital technology is changing carnival in Haiti and how--for centuries--the cutting edge in long-distance communication was Asante drumming in what is now Ghana. For this week’s program, we picked three shows from season 3 that will give you a taste of what an Afropop Closeup is all about. From an interview with the pioneering Caribbean feminist Calypso Rose, to the homegrown music scene African immigrants are creating outside Lisbon, to the story of a mysterious kidnapping of a musical legend--pull back the curtain and see the stories behind the music and see them close up. Produced by Dan Rosenberg, Morgan Greenstreet and Sebastian Bouknight.
