In this week's Flashlight, we explore a very old ruleset for Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, First Edition! Reilly attempts to befriend a sloth, Jake covets Reilly's dice, and we speculate on the role of a sociologist in a Tolkienesque fantasy world.Finding an old copy of the rules can be tricky. OSRIC has compiled a set of first-edition rules (excluding the flavour text, which is subject to copyright) which you can read in more detail here.Follow us wherever you get your podcasts, including Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and YouTube. On the night of November 25th, 1996, Rick Wendorf, 49, and his partner Ruth Queen, 54, were beaten to death with a crowbar inside their home in Eustis, Florida, by a vampire over 500 years old known as Vesago. At least that's what their killer believed. "Vesago" was really Rod Ferrell, a sixteen year-old from Murray, Kentucky, who lost himself in a vampiric role playing game, and truly thought he'd become an immortal bloodsucker. Episode 97 Streamed Live Tuesday July 19, 2022 Main Topic: Alignment in D&D Alignment is defined as a categorization of the ethical and moral perspective of player characters, non-player characters, and creatures. Yes, we have covered this before going to try to go in more depth. When did it originate? It seems pretty clear alignment began in Chainmail as a way to have the “good guys” and the “bad guys”. The good guys were Lawful, and the bad were Chaotic. Later in Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, alignment became much more detailed and granular with the iconic 9 alignments. These have been debated on their meaning over the years, even though they were spelled out in the books. Some links as food for discussion: Changing Meaning of Alignment https://grognardia.blogspot.com/2008/12/od-planes.html https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alignment_(Dungeons_%26_Dragons) Tolkien and DnD Alignment https://www.gamersdecide.com/articles/dnd-alignments-explained https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alignment_(Dungeons_%26_Dragons) https://adnd2e.fandom.com/wiki/PHB_Ch4_Alignment 5e Alignment Alignment Tracking https://rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/10032/whats-the-deal-with-alignment-languages https://viridianscroll.blogspot.com/2021/04/what-are-alignment-languages.html Inevitably the Palladium system rears its ugly head: https://imgur.com/gallery/DmKvb Alignment has been connected to cosmology in Dungeons and dragons sometimes tightly as in The Great Wheel, and sometimes loosely as in The World Axis Great Wheel World Axis The Planes Also in discussion: Alignment-based character classes (Paladin, Cleric, Barbarian, Thief, etc.) Changing alignment and its effects on your character Alignment languages The Geekosphere 1. 2.16 Welcome RPG Ramblings with Jeff Jones. This a weekly show exploring the various details of the TableTop RPG hobby through discussions with interesting people. This week Timothy Connolly of the Benchleydale Academy joins me. Benchleydale is a Facebook group that seeks to keep Advanced Dungeons and Dragons alive by running games. A lot of games. If you are not getting your 1e itch scratched, head over there and join in on the fun. Part way through, I ask Tim to adjust his mic for possible sound quality improvements. In editing, the irony is not lost on me when I came to realize that I was recording from the wrong mic. If you love the show, join the Patreon for as low as one dollar a month. Grab your weapons, the expedition is ready to head out and we have 500 miles to go before we reach the Barrier Peaks. Welcome to a new show on my channel called Idols & Efreeti as I sit back and talk about Advanced Dungeons and Dragons 1e. In this episode I go over in detail how to create a character, page by page, book by book. I go over some decisions to consider as well when making up a character. As always, not everyone plays the same way, and everyone has their own style when playing. If you don't like the way I do something change it! Make it your own! In episode #7 of the Zachtronics podcast I don't interview anyone! Instead, I talk with Keith and Jared (two other members of Zachtronics) about our attempt to play Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, how the game design compares to modern Dungeons and Dragons, and some of the things that make it so spectacularly weird. In this episode, Wayne and Joe talk about the Rogue class in 5e. Interesting builds, backstories, archetypes, and skills are all covered. They also discuss the changes in the Rogue class since Advanced Dungeons and Dragons and what some of the advantages and disadvantages are of the way the class is currently presented.
Random encounters in role-playing games, they were frequently found in many first edition Advanced Dungeons and Dragons modules and adventures. We look back at how we used them or they were used against us. It doesn't have to be rolling on a table to see what is coming down the hall to consume the player...
