Dan and Paul chat with Matt Finch, the ENNIE-award winning designer of the Swords & Wizardry game, and who also created OSRIC, and the Quick Primer for Old School Gaming. Plus he made our favorite Tome of Adventure Design, as seen in use in the Wandering DMs Dungeon Design Dashes. Next up on Kickstarter is Matt's Tome of Wordbuilding Design. Is this just in time for all our fantasy worldbuilding needs? The Tome of World Building is written by ENNIE-award winning author Matt Finch, author of the critically-acclaimed Tome of Adventure Design. Using the Tome of World Building, you can create fantasy worlds quickly and fill them out with a wealth of detail from the random-generation tables in this book. This Kickstarter offers two high quality hardcover books to create a trilogy of creative power with the Tome of Adventure Design. The first is the Tome of World Building, allowing you to create maps, cultures, countries, wilderness regions, and all the history and backstabbing politics of a fantasy world. The second is the Nomicon, with tables to invent fantasy names for everything you'll generate using the Tome of World Building. Back Matt Finch's Tome of Worldbuilding on Kickstarter here

In this week's Flashlight, we explore a very old ruleset for Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, First Edition! Reilly attempts to befriend a sloth, Jake covets Reilly's dice, and we speculate on the role of a sociologist in a Tolkienesque fantasy world.Finding an old copy of the rules can be tricky. OSRIC has compiled a set of first-edition rules (excluding the flavour text, which is subject to copyright) which you can read in more detail here.Follow us wherever you get your podcasts, including Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and YouTube. Matt Finch is one of the fundamental figures of the OSR style of TTRPG, his works include OSRIC, Swords & Wizardry, the magnificent Tome of Adventure Design, and the super influential Quick Primer for Old School Gaming (among many other things). He is also the founder of Mythmere Games and is constantly making more and more excellent gaming material! It's hard for me to put into words what Mark's work means to me. I don't know if my work would ever be the same without his. The Quick Primer for Old School Gaming, even though meant to help you play games inspired by the first editions of D&D, the document defined a style of play that is not really system dependent, and thus serves as a Game Design framework to design Old-School style games, without necessarily having to use old D&D-like systems. Well, at least that's how I've been using it! But that is just one of the many incredible things he made and that I adore, and in this chat we got to talk a little bit about all of them. We chatted about what the OSR is for us, why we like it so much, how it is based on open-ended situations and improvisation, future projects, greek mythology, adventure design, and so many other things. It was a great chat and even though we talked about so many weirdly wonderful things in a little over 1 hour and a half, when we were finished I felt I could have asked so many more questions and get som many more wisdom from Matt that now I want a "Matt Finch Returns" episode someday. So listen up and get weird with us! Check out Matt's Links! Actor Osric Chau is equally adept at comedy and drama, and at being a supportive member of an ensemble while still shining on his own. Osric played Kevin Tran, a high school student turned ghost turned prophet, on Supernatural, and Vogel, a member of the quartet known as the Rowdy Three, on Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency. He won a Leo Award for Best Supporting Performance by a Male in a Dramatic Series for portrayal of Charles in Blood and Water, the first television drama series produced for a Chinese Canadian audience that mixed dialogue in English, Cantonese and Mandarin, and he's had great roles in Star Trek Discovery, Nancy Drew, Christmas at the Golden Dragon, and The Flash. Osric is also a producer. He's a writer and director. He's been a restaurateur. He's spoken out about acts of hatred against Asian Canadians and Asian Americans. In this compelling and at times soul-stirring episode, Osric talks genre-hopping, navigating the industry as an Asian actor, how Supernatural's Kevin Tran changed his life, and the deeply moving story behind his stunning look for the 2016 Leo Awards. Are you currently looking for an alternative the the D&D roleplaying gaming? But still committed to medieval-style fantasy gaming? Dan & Paul review the current top retroclones on the market -- and what what the state of affairs going forward may be if the Open Game License is thrown into disarray! Some D&D fans prefer earlier editions, and new games address the perceived inability of newer editions to preserve the tone of classic D&D while fixing some of the perceived rules issues of older versions. Castles & Crusades is one example, using the unified d20 mechanic from 3rd edition while dropping what the developers perceived as complications (including feats, skills, and prestige classes). Role-playing game publisher Matthew Finch was involved in the development of Castles & Crusades, serving as editor of the Player's Handbook, and was the initial author of OSRIC, which was afterward taken up by Stuart Marshall and released to the public in 2006 as a retro-clone of the first edition of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons (1977–1989). The release prompted another game designer, Daniel Proctor, to write and release Labyrinth Lord in 2007, a more complete retro-clone of the 1981 version of the Dungeons & Dragons Basic Set and its accompanying Expert Set. The following year, Finch announced the release of Swords & Wizardry, a retro-clone of the original Dungeons & Dragons game. Many variants have appeared since the original release of OSRIC, as well as restatements of other editions of D&D and other adventure role-playing games. The games are fostered and supported online by various forums and blogs, sometimes collectively referred to as the Old School Renaissance (OSR), but are also increasingly finding their way into brick and mortar game stores. Wandering DMs Paul Siegel and Dan “Delta” Collins host thoughtful discussions on D&D and other TTRPGs every week. Comparing the pros and cons of every edition from the 1974 Original D&D little brown books to cutting-edge releases for 5E D&D today, we broadcast live on YouTube and Twitch so we can take viewer questions and comments on the topic of the day. Live every Sunday at 1 PM Eastern time. This description uses material from the Wikipedia article "Dungeons & Dragons retro-clones", which is released under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share-Alike License 3.0. RPG developer and publisher Allan T. Grohe Jr. (aka "grodog") joins to talk AD&D retroclone OSRIC, the OSR, Black Blade Publishing, John Eric Holmes, and RPG goodness in general. Allan LOVES him some Greyhawk. The skills he learned tracking down early information on Greyhawk helped lead to his main non-RPG career. How active is the current AD&D 1E and/or OSRIC scene? What is Allan's definition of OSR, and does he feel it's important? The legal importance of OSRIC to the OSR community. ‘zines are often lauded, but at one time Dragon magazine was a sort of “D&D website” in its day as well. Watching an RPG project happen behind the scenes. Shane offers a mild defense of rules lawyers. “Vanilla” fantasy is not a derogatory term. Cthulhu and Delta Green. Look, just hit Cthulhu with a boat. Shane has figured out Lovecraft's indescribable color. Thunderdome match: Strongheart versus Warduke. I played so many games this week! I played Talisman, OSRIC, Pathfinder 1E, and used one of Mr. Henchmen's amazing Hex Flowers for the first time!
Star Wars and unnatural deaths! Osric got a little carried away and forgot that this is not a Star Wars podcast.
Three college students join Osric and Pablo to discuss, well.... basically everything. The whole podcast was an hour and fifty minutes. It will be released in fifteen minute segments.
Osric returns from his vigorous studies to inform you of life on a modern college campus. Oh, and did you know Jedi's are very bad.
More technical issues have plagued Osric and company, but thanks to Pablo we are back and running. IMPORTANT WARNING, the DELTA variant is very dangerous, at least that's what the experts say.......
Osric returns. Broadcasting from the hills of New Hampshire, Osric as usual tries to explain the complexities of medical policy, but as usual he gets derailed and ends up talking about, well, a half dozen random things......
Osric and Mr. Oggerly discuss the ethics and morality of pride month. Next they break down how people opposed to it should respond. Also did you know our nation is starting to become filled with racist ideology.
Osric goes a little more in depth into what Pride Month really is about. And Pablo returns..........
Pride Month is now in full swing..... Osric and his sister Ava break down why it is so harmful, and also the serious dangers posed by it. Plus did you know birds were racists?
Osric's sister joins him to discuss masks and vaccines, and singing, and the last name James.
Yes, that is about all there is to talk about, at least all that's interesting, except for UFOs. Francis and Osric brake down all of this and more, in a heart wrenching episode.
Osric discuss the Greatest Event in History, on Good Friday.
Osric attempts to take on the issue of mass shootings in a special podcast!
Osric is joined by a native american for a comprehensive and entertaining interview. Quick Note: this episode was recorded in late February, but due to technical delays was unable to be released until now. Sorry for the fuzzy audio. Pablo tried but couldn't fix it.
Osric apologizes for getting the Cuomo nursing home scandal wrong. Plus, N.Y. city is now using robot dogs.
With President Trump gone, Osric and Francis have nothing to talk about except gender, race neutral playing cards and white privileged individuals like Tom Brady and Bernie Sanders. Oh, its also Black History Month, well that's something to celebrate!
In this episode we tackle our first real episode by taking a look as the OSRIC role playing game!
