In this dynamic Nomad Futurist podcast, Dean Nelson, an alum of Sun Microsystems, eBay and Uber, and Founder and Chairman of Infrastructure Masons, shares his immense enthusiasm for the digital infrastructure industry that serves as the fundamental underpinning of our modern world. After a brief stint doing temp work out of high school, Nelson got an associate's degree in electronics from DeVry. He was recruited to work for Sun Microsystems where he learned technology, business, strategy and people management. Nelson references his exposure to all the varied areas of technology as “attending the University of Sun,” a fundamental on-the-job training that launched his career. He stresses the need for this kind of exposure. “I think that one thing we lack in our industry right now, actually across the world, is apprenticeships. If we offered apprenticeships today to people to truly learn a trade like this, it would accelerate everything.” Nelson is deeply committed to communicating the value and opportunities offered by the data center industry to those who may not understand how core IT is to our everyday world. “There is every discipline inside of digital infrastructure; planning, accounting, supply chain orchestration, fault management…even HR planning, everything can be tied together.” Nelson discusses the importance of communicating the real-world applicability of the digital infrastructure space in a way that is simple and relevant to people who may not be aware of it. “The problem is we don't have our education systems lined up to be able to say that this industry, digital infrastructure specifically, is an incredibly rewarding career.” Nelson shares his excitement about some of the newest advances in the tech space. He asserts the inevitability of self-driving and even flying cars. He does express concern about the possible abuses that may arise from audio and video deep fakes made possible by virtual reality technology. But Nelson is ultimately optimistic about the Digital Infrastructure industry leading the way in terms of environmental and sustainability issues because of the involvement of some of the biggest players in the space. He is hopeful that self-regulation can be the answer as it was for PUE standards. His message to the young: “This industry has an incredibly important purpose. We connect the world…We enable opportunity everywhere. Wouldn't you like to be in the fastest growing industry in the world?” Dean Nelson is a seasoned technology executive with 32 years of experience deploying $10B of digital infrastructure projects across 3 continents. Nelson is currently the CEO of Cato Digital, Inc, a software platform that unlocks stranded power in datacenters, the Founder and Chairman of Infrastructure Masons, a professional association of industry executives and technology professionals uniting the builders of the digital age, and the Founder and CEO of Dean Nelson Inc, a strategic advisory and consulting company serving startups, fortune 500 companies and investment firms. Previously, Nelson led Uber's Metal as a Service function supporting Uber's ridesharing business delivering over 100 million trips a week globally, as well as UberEats, UberFreight, UberHealth, UberForBusiness, and Autonomous vehicle and UberAir development. Prior to Uber, Nelson worked at eBay Inc for 7 years as the VP of Global Foundation Services, which served over 300 million users, enabling over $250B of commerce volume annually. Prior to eBay, he worked at Sun Microsystems for 17 years in various technical, management and executive leadership roles. Nelson's final Sun project was the consolidation of their multi-billion-dollar global technical infrastructure portfolio of over 1,000 facilities. Dean holds four US patents.
In this episode of Smart Energy Voices, host John Failla is joined by Dean Nelson, Founder and Chairman of Infrastructure Masons and CEO of Cato. They discuss the creation of the iMasons Climate Accord and the community efforts for diversity and inclusion, education, sustainability, and technology. iMasons Climate Accord will present a workshop on "Decarbonizing Data Center Power" at Smart Energy Decisions' Net Zero Forum, September 12-14 in Phoenix. Dean's career journey [02:15] Launching iMasons [05:32] iMasons objectives [07:37] Compounding impact [13:03] The iMasons Climate Accord [17:32] Aligning the industry in labeling standards [25:39] Community and making a difference [30:08] Creating a community Dean started working in the digital infrastructure industry in 2008 when he was at Sun Microsystems. Sun had various communities, but Dean's industry didn't have representation. So he started a group called Data Center Pulse, which rapidly grew to around 7000 people across 66 countries. People all over the world united in their efforts on different projects. When Dean joined eBay, the work was all-consuming and moving so quickly that he realized he was losing touch with his community. When he left eBay to take a sabbatical touring colleges with his daughter, he decided he wanted to bring his friends back together. Dean called nine people and asked for their thoughts, opinions, and ideas about how to make a community again but to do it a little differently. Now the iMasons community has 7,500 people participating in over 130 countries. Collaboration of perspectives As a professional association run by members, iMasons' key objectives are diversity inclusion, education, sustainability, and technology. At an event, company names are kept out of the equation. People sit together and have working sessions without knowing which company they're helping or which is helping them. Instead, each table spends a set amount of time working on the same issue. This environment has become one of the best consulting groups because of so many perspectives coming together. Even competitors sit at the same table and work together. The key is that iMasons aggregates and amplifies the incredible work from its members and their companies. That's what allows it to succeed. The organization doesn't drive and create a product. Instead, it enables the community to come together and compound its impact. The motivation of the iMasons Climate Accord With temperatures rising, global warming, and various other climate issues, the advisory council at iMasons recognized that progress wasn't moving quickly enough. Dean called one of the board advisory members, Christian Belady, and they gathered together 40 people who have some of the largest portfolios in the world. They spent six hours at that event creating pages and pages of content. After summarizing all the ideas, they all agreed they were aligned on carbon reduction. The result was the creation of the iMasons Climate Accord on Earth Day 2020. Carbon reduction is a great goal, but having a standard carbon accounting methodology would be necessary for people to align. Finding or creating that standard became iMasons' goal. If there were a common methodology or marking on products, better purchase decisions could be made based on carbon history. Also, companies will know exactly where they stand from a carbon standpoint. Megan Prichard knows a thing or two about revolutionary transportation. As the current Global Head of Autonomous Ridesharing at Ford Motor Co. and previous GM for Uber Air, she has had a pivotal role in the groundbreaking intersection of aviation and app-based travel. Today on The Breakthrough with Alison Dean, Megan paints a picture of a future where you step out of your home, order a flying Uber, and instead of driving 2 hours you arrive at your destination in 20 minutes - or at the very least you've gained a mobile office while the car you've stepped into drives itself. Listen in as Megan explains how quickly this scenario is coming to fruition as well as the safety standards and community guidelines that surround this new reality.

Facebook points out that The FTC conducted an in-depth “Second Request” of the Instagram transaction in 2012 before voting unanimously to clear it.“Now, many years later, with seemingly no regard for settled law or the consequences to innovation and investment, the agency is saying it got it wrong and wants a do-over. In addition to being revisionist history, this is simply not how the antitrust laws are supposed to work.”Looks like this will be a long, protracted legal fight “I had "Facebook sued for Antitrust" on my 2020 Bingo Card, although admittedly I also had it on my 2019 and 2018 Bingo card as well,” says Tess' old boss. Facebook is the second big tech company to face a major legal challenge this year after the US Justice Department sued Google in October, accusing the tech company of abusing its position to maintain an illegal monopoly over search and search advertising. So long Melbourne's flying taxis, we barely knew yeUber has sold off its aviation division to start-up called Joby, just days after offloading its self-driving car businessIt's looking unlikely Uber will deliver on its promise to launch a fleet of 1000 commercial flying taxis in Melbourne from 2023. Uber Lyft Drivers & Gig Economy Workers Weekly News: Uber is unloading dead weight (Autonomous, Micro-mobility, UberAir) and focusing on Rideshare, Delivery, and Grocery app-based space. EU's top court ruled that ride-hailing apps that put passengers directly in touch with drivers are simply, "online platforms". Denver Regional Transportation District (RTD) has ended its relationship with Uber, and has now partnered with Lyft to do the same thing. Daniel Boice, Trustify founder, has pleaded guilty to wire and securities fraud. Uber is appealing the U.S. Center for Disease Control to have drivers be designated "non-health essential workers" so that drivers qualify for early vaccinations once available. The University of Massachusetts conducted a study on rideshare drivers window settings if driving during the COVID19 global pandemic. Looks like Joby Aviation will be purchasing UberAir before the years end. CaresAct continuation? Waiting to see if the $908 billion COVID19 relief package will pass this week. Uber Lyft Drivers & Gig Economy Workers Weekly News: This week we wonder how Uber has hit its all time high on the DOW since its IPO, closing today again over $51. The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) announced it has granted seven companies, Autonomous Vehicle Permits, Included in the list of companies is Aurora Innovation (*A.Innovation is the startup who is trying to buy Uber Autonomous). Uber and Lyft was awarded a Federal contract worth $810 Million. Washington state has placed a cap on how much app-based delivery services can charge customers. Biden is still promising to use the California 'ABC test' on all I.C.'s nationwide, problem is Prop22 made this test NOT applicable to app-based gig workers. October 2016: Uber announced its new project UBERair, 4 years later all we have seen is a couple helicopters, now Uber is promising eVTOL (electric vertical takeoff and landing) technology [a.k.a. P.R. Stunt]. 5th Australian gig worker has died in just last two months, what is going on with this. We all saw the video of David Kangogo, rideshare driver who had to kick two riders out for not wearing masks, followed by a racist rant by the passenger who would not put their mask on. WEAR YOUR MASKS PEOPLE. HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!!!Rideshare Rodeo Podcast is presented by UberLyftDrivers.com
This week's episode is a really interesting discussion with Clem Newton-Brown, who is looking to set up a network of landing sites for eVTOL aircraft in Melbourne, Australia - one of the first international test cities for Uber Air. He is a former planning barrister and Deputy Lord Mayor of the city, and gives a really detailed insight into the potential for Urban Air Mobility in the country. We talk about opportunities for OEMs once aircraft services are operational, what landing infrastructure could look like, and also the economics side of the industry.
Building a sophisticated AI that can evolve to fit our vast and diverse needs is a Herculean challenge. Today we speak with senior engineer Eric Steen about Automata, his experimental Elixir project that uses neuroevolution and cutting edge theory to create a multi-agent behavior tree — or really good AI in the common tongue. But before we tap into that rich topic, we talk with Eric about tech burnout, his background, and why Elixir is an excellent language for writing modern software. He then unpacks AI concepts like the need to develop backpropagation in your system, and the value of “neural diversity,” and Markov decision processes. After Eric gives his take on architecture versus design and the place of domain-driven design, we discuss Automata. A key breakthrough, Eric shares his enthusiasm for ‘novelty search,’ where machines learn from a variety of new behaviors and searches, as opposed to completing one task at a time. We touch on Automata’s progress, Eric’s long-term approach, and what his project might be used for. Near the end of our interview, we chat about CryptoWise, a collaborative analysis platform for cryptocurrency. Todd Resudek then opens with another edition of Pattern Matching, where he interviews Whatsapp engineer Michał Muskała. They talk about Michał’s career, the movies and music that he enjoys, and the projects that excite him. Tune in to hear more about both Michał and neuroevolution in AI. Key Points From This Episode: Experiencing tech burnout and challenges around algorithms rendering you redundant. Hear about Eric’s programming background and shifts in the industry. Backpropagation and using Elixir to build a neural evolutionary system. How Markov decision processes help systems choose between possible actions. Eric’s take on architecture versus design and the place of domain-driven design. Exploring Automata — Eric’s ambitious multi-agent behavior tree. The importance of neurodiversity when building AIs; they need to adapt to many needs. Novelty search; why learn through one task when you can learn through a variety of tasks at the same time? Automata’s practical applications and why Eric sees it as a long-term project. Eric shares a progress report on his work and using design processes like Sprint. What Eric would like people to use Automata for. A sense that Elixir is gaining in popularity within Silicon Valley. Eric gives an elevator-pitch for CryptoWise, a collaborative analysis platform for cryptocurrency. Todd Resudek interviews Michał Muskała on another edition of Pattern Matching. Michał shares his background and his move from Poland to London. Movies and music that Michał enjoys, and details on projects that excite him. Understanding how to travel with credit cards can be very complex. One thing to consider is co-branded cards can often limit your travel to certain airlines rental cars and times of the year. Using a non-co-branded card can allow you to be able to travel when you want and use the transportation of your choice. In our pilot episode, we interview the fascinating and inspiring Clem Newton-Brown. Clem is a former barrister, Deputy Lord Mayor of Melbourne and Member of the Victorian Parliament. He is also a key player in getting Uber Air to choose Melbourne as one of the first international test cities for their urban aerial ride sharing service. He has spent a lifetime around politics, law, planning, and cities, pushing the boundaries. He started the first water taxi service on the Yarra River in 1992 and around the same time was getting around on a powered scooter, 25 years before the current trend for micro-mobility. With Uber Air's plans for Melbourne, Clem's https://www.skyportz.com/ (Skyportz) business is developing the infrastructural network required. In his conversation with Brenton, Clem shares his insights on how air mobility is the future for urban transportation, and how our experience of urban mobility will transform our lives. --- Connect with Clem - https://www.linkedin.com/in/clem-newton-brown-oam-47490724/ (https://www.linkedin.com/in/clem-newton-brown-oam-47490724/) https://www.skyportz.com/ (https://www.skyportz.com/) --- Contact our host - https://www.linkedin.com/in/brentonmwebber/ (https://www.linkedin.com/in/brentonmwebber/) https://www.halftimeorange.co.nz/ (https://www.halftimeorange.co.nz)
When Australia's emerges from the the Covid-19 shutdown, the country will need some big infrastructure projects. Here are three high tech projects announced in 2019: Elon Musk's Hyperloop for the East Coast; Uber Air pilotless drone transport from Melbourne CBD to Tullamarine airport; the Sun Cable project to harness outback solar energy for South East Asia.

Welcome to Shephard Studio’s Revolutions in Vertical Flight, brought to you in partnership with Bell. The Revolutions in Vertical Flight podcast tells the little-known story of the history of rotorcraft, from the autogiro and helicopter, to the tiltrotor and eVTOL platforms in development today. Revolutions in Vertical Flight reveals the stories of a small group of pioneers, the visions and beliefs that drove them, and their approach to invention and innovation. And the Shephard Studio podcast series looks at the vertical flight innovation underway today, revealing how it will transform military operations and revolutionise urban mobility. In this episode, we learn about the revolution underway in urban transportation, one that will have an impact on the same scale as when the internal combustion engine took over from the horse-drawn carriage.Industry giants and start-ups alike are racing to develop electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft.Better known as EvTOLs, these platforms could turn the visions of science fiction into reality, providing low-carbon travel in the urban environment, without the need for runways or the other infrastructure associated with earlier types of aviation.Innovations like the Bell Nexus, CityAirbus and UberAir are deep in development, with companies expecting significant advances over the course of the next decade. We hear how passengers could one day hail an air taxi through a smartphone app, transporting them from one building to another within or between cities, without facing the traffic of urban streets.
Flying cars are finally here, as Uber prepares the launch of Uber Air in 2023. The service will initially roll out in Dallas, Los Angeles, and Melbourne, but Uber is already planning to extend it in London, Delhi, Paris, Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, San Francisco, Mexico City, Mumbai, New York, Santiago, Bogota, and Sao Paolo. Skyports will likely be located on existing rooftops and parking lots and, according to the company, the Uber Air vehicles will eventually be autonomous. Now we pretend our hoverboards!
For the first time ever, Uber has revealed what they desire their flying taxis to look like inside. This happened at the annual Elevate conference, third edition. This reference design that debuted is for the cars that, according to the company, will power their flying taxi service named “Uber Air”.
