Every lake in this episode was somebody's pasture once. On this stop of the Backwoods Cryptid Road Trip, Brian King-Sharp drives into Oklahoma, where the three lakes said to hide the Oklahoma Octopus were all built by the government inside living memory.Lake Tenkiller, Lake Thunderbird, and Oologah Lake are reservoirs, not natural water, and under every one of them are drowned roads, standing timber, fence lines, and the foundations of houses that were dry ground three generations ago. That's the ground this legend grew on, and it's why this is a don't-swim-after-dark episode.The stories start on the Fourth of July, 1978, with a seventeen-year-old girl floating on her back off a houseboat on Tenkiller when something wraps her leg from ankle to knee and pulls her under. From there the episode follows a bass fisherman in the drowned timber at Thunderbird who watched an arm feel its way around a dead oak, a scuba diver who cut himself loose from something in the old river channel at thirty-five feet and came up with sucker marks pressed into his wetsuit, and a farm kid on Oologah who saw two arms come over the tops of his family's flooded fence posts and pull the wire down.Between the encounters, Brian traces the real paper trail behind the legend, which is thinner and stranger than the television version. It starts with a June 2, 1982 item in the Daily Oklahoman about two boys and a dead saltwater octopus found in the Verdigris River near Lock and Dam 18 on the barge canal, runs through a 1987 article by Kiowa writer Russell Bates about a horse-sized, reddish-brown creature said to drag people into sandstone caverns, and picks up again in 2007 with two cryptid books that named the three lakes without citing a source, a reporter at the Oklahoma Gazette who found that no park manager or diver on those lakes had ever heard of the thing, and Loren Coleman's guess that it all began with a planted carcass.Then in January 2009 Animal Planet's Lost Tapes turned it into a monster with a name. Along the way the episode looks at why man-made lakes breed this kind of story, from the cold water sitting in the old channel to the drownings that happen every summer in water nobody can see into.The second half leaves the water for the timber. At a T-junction in the hall, he saw a man in a long wool coat and flat cap who motioned him into a side doorway[22][23].The Twist: The room was completely empty, smelling of dust and decay, and the man vanished[23]. In the corridor stood an old portrait matching the man's appearance[23]. Seconds later, the tour group arrived from behind him, baffled as to how Mark got ahead of them past a locked red velvet rope[24][25].The Haunted Mansion Museum (French Quarter, New Orleans):The Story: Francine visited a converted 1890s mansion museum on a four-person tour[26][27]. Looking into a large vanity mirror, she saw the reflection of a woman in period dress standing in the room behind her[27][28]. When she turned around, no one was there, but looking back into the mirror, the woman was face-to-face with her inside the glass[28].The Manifestation: Retreating to her car, Francine's phone signal died, and a haunting music box melody filled the cabin[29][30]. A white mist formed in the passenger seat into the same ghostly woman, who touched Francine's wrist and wept: *"You have a wonderful mother... She's not cross to you and she's not cruel like my mother... She's the one who put me in my grave. You must pity me."*[30]2. The problem is that she is twenty miles away. Then Ray sees what is standing in the alders—and realizes its mouth never moves when it speaks.In North Carolina's Pisgah National Forest, Trisha encounters what at first appears to be a deer. Then it looks directly at her with both eyes, begins moving in ways no deer should, and eventually rises onto its hind legs miles deeper into the trail.In south Georgia, Marcus is sitting in a ladder stand when he spots a pale, hairless figure hanging by its arms from a longleaf pine forty yards away. Other sightings range from Bandelier National Monument to the Australian bush, and a New Mexico highway patrol officer's two encounters come from George Knapp and Colm Kelleher's book Hunt for the Skinwalker.From there, it goes to the Gardette-LePrete mansion at 716 Dauphine Street in New Orleans, where legend says a passerby in 1836 followed a trickle of blood inside and found a courtyard strewn with hacked-apart bodies and a man who'd been buried alive, said to be the brother of an Ottoman sultan, though no historical record mentions the prince or the murders.Next, Rich Reynolds of the UFO Conjectures blog points to the CIA's MK-Ultra LSD experiments and suggests that some classic UFO encounters were drug-induced. The cases include contactee Orfeo Angelucci swallowing a pill in a Twentynine Palms, California, diner in December 1954, the 1957 abduction of Antonio Villas Boas in Brazil, and the 1973 Pascagoula, Mississippi, abduction of Charles Hickson and Calvin Parker near the World War II biological-warfare site on Horn Island, in an area where local tales tell of later experiments with the hallucinogen BZ.After that, on November 30th, 1954, a nine-pound meteorite crashed through the ceiling of a rented house in Oak Grove, near Sylacauga, Alabama, bounced off the radio, and struck Ann Hodges on the hip as she napped. A lawsuit from her landlady, Birdie Guy, was settled with the Hodges family paying $500 for the rock, which Ann later gave to the Alabama Museum of Natural History; she suffered a nervous breakdown, split from her husband in 1964, and died in a nursing home in 1972.Then comes West Virginia's Flatwoods Monster, the figure with a round red face, a dark green body, and a hood shaped like the ace of spades that Kathleen May and six children saw on a farm hillside in Flatwoods on September 12th, 1952, after three boys watched something streak across the sky. In 2000, Joe Nickell of the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry traced it to a meteor, an aircraft beacon, and a barn owl, and Braxton County still celebrates the creature with a museum, monster-shaped chairs, and Flatwoods Days.The episode closes with an anonymous listener's story of Matilda, the ghost in a grandmother's big double house, where a door swung shut in a windowless room, a radio switched on in the night, and police kept answering calls nobody in the house had made. An obituary in an old newspaper in the attic named a woman called Matilda who had died there, and the activity stopped once the grandmother got a dog.

At London's Highgate Cemetery, visitors report ghostly figures among the Victorian tombs, and in New Orleans, people say Voodoo queen Marie Laveau still walks the cemetery where she's buried. Some of the people who leave letters at the graves of Oscar Wilde and Jim Morrison in Paris's Père Lachaise Cemetery say they've sensed the men they came to visit. Tonight's first guest, Derin Franks, had his Bigfoot sighting in the William B. Bankhead National Forest, in North Alabama, in 2017. It happened on the last day of deer hunting season. Derin had just walked to the edge of a greenfield when he decided to sit down on a log, just inside the tree line. As he sat there, taking everything in, he suddenly heard a limb snap about 12 yards over his right shoulder. When he heard it, he stood up and turned around. When he did, he couldn't believe his eyes…Tonight's second guest, Catman Hero, had his Bigfoot sighting on August 8th, 2016. It happened at a campsite in Middle Tennessee while he was participating in a nighttime field investigation. He was with Randy Hutchings, a very experienced field investigator, and another investigator named Josh.After arriving at the campsite, the three men walked about two to three miles into the woods before Randy, who was leading the investigation, told Catman and Josh to stop. Randy explained that, when he gave the word, he wanted them to turn on their lights and scan the woods for eyeshine.When Randy gave the signal, all three men turned on their lights and began scanning the woods. Almost immediately, Randy and Josh noticed something hiding behind a tree branch. Critics dismiss it as an urban myth written to sell newspapers, and the segment sets it beside Einstein's relativity and the atomic clocks that run faster at altitude and slower at high speed.From there, it goes back to October 26th, 1858, when servant Elizabeth Carr ran from 217 West 30th Street in New York City in her nightclothes, screaming, "Frank is murdering the whole family!" Frank Gouldy, confronted by his father over $10 taken from a bank account meant to start him in business, had gone through the house with a dull hatchet, striking his father, his pregnant stepmother, his two young brothers, and both servants before shooting himself; Elizabeth, who had wrestled the hatchet away from him, was the only victim to die, and the Saugerties Bard, Henry S. Backus, turned the attack into the ballad "The Thirtieth Street Murder".Next comes the chupacabra of Canóvanas, Puerto Rico, blamed for the goats, chickens, and pigs found dead there in August 1995 with deep puncture wounds in their necks. Madelyne Tolentino described a creature that hopped along on two legs with a row of feathers down its head and spine, but later witnesses reported spikes, four legs and the stalk of a big cat, blue eyes or glowing red ones, bat wings, bird wings, or none at all, and eleven reports have it changing into a hairy, Bigfoot-like beast inside a blinding white light.After that comes April 2nd, 1988, when a naked man in a dog collar leapt from a second-story window on Charlotte Street in Kansas City's Hyde Park neighborhood, and police broke into the house to find more than 200 Polaroids and detailed logs of how Robert Berdella tortured and killed at least six young men between 1984 and 1987. Berdella, soon known as the Butcher of Kansas City, also ran Bob's Bazaar Bizarre, a Westport Flea Market booth selling skulls, shrunken heads, and occult books, and he died of a heart attack in prison in 1992.The episode closes with Weird Darkness listener Chris Misulich's account of a camping trip in the Allegheny National Forest, where he said aloud around the fire, "I wish we could see something we couldn't explain". That night the tents were soaked through, a figure sat gripping the steering wheel of a friend's car, and Chris's moonlit shadow, the only one in the group, whipped away into the woods; a shrine-like table in a clearing vanished as he got within five feet of it, and back at camp someone stoked the fire and strummed his guitar outside a friend's tent.

This week, the Backwoods Cryptid Road Trip rolls into Loveland, Ohio, a quiet river town northeast of Cincinnati with one of the strangest creature legends in America.In March 1972, Loveland police officer Ray Shockey was patrolling an icy stretch of Riverside Drive near the old Totes factory when he spotted something crouched in the road. According to his account, the creature stood upright, looked directly at him, and moved over the guardrail toward the Little Miami River. Two weeks later, fellow officer Mark Matthews reported his own encounter on the same road and fired his revolver at what he saw. Decades later, Matthews would publicly offer a very different explanation for that night. But the Loveland Frog story may go back even further. In 1994, eighteen-year-old Brian Canfield was driving along a dark road in the foothills of Washington when his pickup suddenly died. Then something dropped out of the sky. He described a nine-foot creature covered in blue fur, with yellow eyes, a wolf-like face, clawed feet, and enormous leathery wings.For several minutes, the two simply stared at each other before the creature took flight—and Brian's truck inexplicably started again. In Part Two of Brian's conversation with Matt from Texas, the story moves from the highway encounter that changed his life to what happened when he began actively searching for answers.Matt takes us onto a secluded 500-acre property along a Central Texas river, where he says the activity has continued throughout 2026. He has documented unusual tracks, broken limbs, possible tree structures, repeated wood knocks, and strange vocalizations—and some of his most compelling experiences have happened when he tried interacting with whatever may be out there.On September 6, Matt heard a tree snap near the same area where he had encountered a powerful, unexplained odor months earlier. He moved toward the location while filming and says he was met with several seconds of an unmistakable growl, followed by roughly fifteen seconds of heavy breathing. He also describes experiments involving alleged Bigfoot recordings, including an “angry Bigfoot” vocalization and a strange humming sound. Playing them into the woods appeared to trigger responses ranging from wood knocks to what Matt believed were heavy, bipedal footsteps moving nearby. Those experiences have also made him question whether attempting to provoke a reaction could damage the trust he believes he has slowly developed with the creatures on the property. Matt discusses tracks of noticeably different sizes that have led him to suspect there may be an adult female and a younger individual using the area.He also recounts a May 17 sighting of a light reddish or copper-colored figure and a remarkable series of tree knocks recorded during the same outing.Then there is the evidence he discovered on his truck.On April 19, Matt found what appeared to be a large handprint on the vehicle. As they watched it run away into the deep woods.
