Several hundred New Yorkers rallied at the state Capitol on Wednesday, March 19 as part of the Renewable Heat Now campaign. The lobbyists gathered for a lunch time rally on the Million Dollar Staircase to encourage state lawmakers and the Governor to include the NY Heat in the State Budget which is due April 1. NY Heat would require state agencies – especially the Public Service Commission – to align their actions and policies with the state's climate law (CLCPA) and to cap utility bills for low-income New Yorkers at 6% of their income. The Assembly has not supported the bill while the Governor has balked at the 6% cap though that is already a PSC goal. We hear from Liz Moran of Earth Justice followed by the two main legislative sponsors of the bill” Senator Liz Krueger and Assemblymember JoAnn Simon, who replaced Pat Fahy as the lead Assembly sponsor when Fahy moved over to the Senate. We also hear from Assemblymember Sarahana Shrestha, who is also with DSA. We finish up with a short statement from Assemblymemeber Tony Simone. By Mark Dunlea for Hudson Mohawk Magazine. (Part 2)

Pointing to challenging, sizzling weather conditions this summer ahead of the season's first heat wave, state Sen. Liz Krueger on Monday put a little out-of-season heat on her Assembly colleagues to pass a climate sustainability bill that passed in the Senate.
State lawmakers joined 100 advocates at the NY State Capitol to demand that the NYS Legislature pass the NY HEAT Act before the end of session. The critical climate bill would cap energy bills at 6% of household income for low- and middle- income families, saving them up to $75 per month. On top of the $75 monthly savings, NY HEAT gets rid of the unfair 100 foot rule, which forces New York families to subsidize new gas hookups to the tune of $200 million every year and worsens the climate crisis. We hear first from Betta Broad, Campaign Director for New Yorkers for the Clean Power, followed by Sen. Liz Krueger, the lead sponsor of the NY Heat Act. Also speaking are Sonal Jessel, Policy Director for WE ACT for Environmental Justice, Alycia Bacon of Mothers Out Front, and Albany County Legislator and SHARE co-chair Mert Simpson, who discusses the 100% Renewable Capitol bill.

It's not just you. You're not crazy. You're not a bad mom. You're not alone. These are words and deep beliefs that resonate through and form the backbone of today's guests, Catherine Birndorf, MD, and Paige Bellenbaum, LMSW. Catherine and Paige are dedicated to changing the perinatal mental health terrain, and they do it through The Motherhood Center, a place of radical acceptance, nurturance, and individual and group support. On today's episode, we pull back the curtain on motherhood and redefine what is considered "normal" and "typical". With PMADs (perinatal mood and anxiety disorders) being the #1 complication associated with birth and the #2 cause of maternal mortality, this is a critical conversation. On today's episode, we unpack why it's so important that we talk more about these conditions, how to do your best to prevent PMADs, and what to do if you or someone you love has symptoms. Aviva, Paige, and Catherine discuss: The definition of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADS) and the different diagnoses that fall under the PMAD umbrella What PMAD taboos still exist today, why this needs to change, and how Roe v. Wade affects these taboos Paige and Catherine's personal stories with perinatal mood disorders and what brought them to the point of specializing in PMADS and opening the motherhood center The kinds of physical and psychological feelings and symptoms associated with PMADs and signs birthing people and their providers should watch out for Why we need to move in the direction of making it mandatory for OB-GYNs, midwives, pediatricians, and any providers who come in contact with newer expecting mothers to begin educating their patients about PMADS and screening for symptoms The effects of the pandemic, social isolation, and potential cultural contributors on PMADS The role of medication and psychotherapy in treating conditions Catherine Birndorf is a reproductive psychiatrist and the co-founder, CEO, and medical director of The Motherhood Center of New York. Knowing that that isn't the norm for many women I wanted to interview her so we could hear her story of a long labor and eventually an empowering birth. Liz Krueger is a social media influencer who shares her life to thousands on instagram. With sharing her life, Liz has realized she has had to be very open and vulnerable with her followers. This was not something new to Liz, as she has always been an open and vulnerable person, but being vulnerable to thousands of people was a big jump. With online bullies and people being mean to her through the screen she wondered if being vulnerable was something she could continue to do, or if it was a mentally good place. She quickly realized that this was something she could not invite onto her page, she realized she too is human and not every human is perfect in any sense. Sharing her real and raw life is what she wanted to do instead of sharing a staged and fake life, and if she got hate while doing that, she did not care. Liz further opened up about an instance that occurred to her at a wedding. At a friend's wedding, she opted to wear a bodycon dress that she felt comfortable in. As she was on the dance floor, a woman approached her and slapped her butt, saying that "she was asking for this to occur wearing an outfit like that". Liz did not see this as fun or a game at all, but instead felt as if she was assaulted by this woman. She later took to a radio station to share her story that day at the wedding, however this did not go over well. As people were giving her threats, bullying her, calling her slurs, and much more; saying she was inviting this to happen by wearing a dress like that. Instead of attacking the woman's actions, they attacked her. This really rocked Liz's world as people from across the world caught onto this story and attacked her, but she took control of this and did not let it affect her mental health. She says, just because people don't agree with your feelings doesn't mean your feelings aren't real. As a result of this, Liz began a kindness campaign that helped others who were bullied. She took control of the situation and made it into something that meant something. We cannot always let big things bring us down, instead we have to take control of the situations that are put in front of us. Life can be difficult with the societal norms that are placed all around us and social media, however our mental health must always be a priority. Your struggle is no less than the person beside you, they are just struggling differently. How did Americans come to think so poorly of government? And how did Joe Biden come to be the first modern president who’s even tried to change our minds? Kai talks with three change-makers about the role of government in our lives. Activist Mari Copeny a.k.a. “Little Miss Flint” recounts how a letter that she sent as an elementary school student brought national attention to a public health crisis in her backyard - and inspired her to continue giving back to her community, speaking out and holding her government accountable. Anand Giridharadas, author of Winners Take All: The Elite Charade of Changing the World (2018), explores Reaganism, the possibilities of the Biden presidency, and challenges the idea that the country’s biggest problems are best solved by turning to the leadership of the super wealthy -- as philanthropists and innovators, presidents and mayors. And Senator Liz Krueger (D-28), chair of the New York State Senate’s Finance Committee, joins to talk about the proposed $212 Billion dollar state budget deal and the monumental tax increase -- on New York’s wealthiest -- that echoes cries to “tax the rich”.
