Send us a Text Message.Tom Jacobson swung into the Playwright's Spotlight in the midst of his coinciding plays The Bauhaus Project and Crevasse to discuss the correlation to both of the pieces and the subject matter of fascism and anti-Semitism in Nazi Germany. While discussing the historical influence of the Bauhaus, we explore previews and changes within coinciding pieces, writing trilogies and their process and presentation, standalones within trilogies, jumping timelines in historical works, balancing historic events and relationships, and taking creative license. We also discuss research, outlining, and when to start writing, breaking down structure, layering characters with and for the actor, table work and the role of the playwright, doubling and tripling up actors, writing complex sets with simplicity, stage magic on the play, and the benefits of academia as well as relationships and how they can help land productions. It's a wonderful conversation with a few technical hiccups that you might find entertaining, but you'll walk away with some education in history in addition to some insight in the craft of playwriting. As always... Enjoy!Tom Jacobson has penned more than 50 plays and has had more than 100 productions of his works performed around the world. His play The Twentieth-Century Way premiered at The Theatre @ Boston Court and the New York International Fringe Festival garnering five Ovation Award nominations, four Los Angeles Drama Critics' Circle nominations, one GLAAD Award nomination, a Fringe Festival Award for Outstanding Production of a Play, a PEN Center Award for Drama and then moved Off Broadway to Rattlestick Playwrights Theatre. He has been a co-literary manager of The Theatre @ Boston Court, a founding member of Playwrights Ink, and a board member of Cornerstone Theater Company and The Theatre @ Boston Court. His most recent play The Bauhaus Project opened at the Atwater Village Theatre and will be running simultaneously with his play Crevasse at the The Victory Theatre here in the Los Angeles area. Today I talked to Richard Fulco about his novel We Are All Together (Wampus Multimedia, 2022). Stephen Cane is a guitarist – he's already walked out on one band to join another one that subsequently falls apart. He gets himself to New York City to try to rejoin his first band, the one headed by his best friend and former bandmate, Dylan John. It's 1967, drugs and girls are everywhere, Dylan is on the verge of becoming a rock n' roll star, and Stephen makes some extremely poor choices. When Dylan quits just before a big show, Stephen is given a huge opportunity, but it doesn't take long before he starts making more bad decisions. He's in turmoil, as is the entire country, and his choices in love and loyalty cause him to spiral into self-doubt. Is being a rock star worth losing everything he holds dear? Richard Fulco's first novel, There Is No End to This Slope (Wampus Multimedia) was published in 2014. He received an MFA in playwriting from Brooklyn College where he was the recipient of a MacArthur Scholarship. His plays have either been presented or developed at The New York International Fringe Festival, The Playwrights' Center, The Flea, Here Arts Center, Chicago Dramatists and The Dramatists Guild. Richard's one-act play Swedish Fish was published by Heuer Publishing and his stories, poetry, interviews and reviews have appeared in The Brooklyn Rail, Failbetter, Across the Margin, Fiction Writers Review and American Songwriter (among others). The quirky and energetic playwright Nina Mansfield stopped by Playwright's Spotlight, and while she's far from high strung, I can't help but think the female characters she sticks in unusual situations are all a faction of her. It's hard to pinpoint the exact areas of playwriting we cover in this episode, because we cover so many subjects - teaching subtext, building backstory, timing, character development by letting them tell YOU who they are, the 10-minute structure, and revisiting old works that didn't work. We also touch on approaching premise, training later in one's career, and most importantly - having fun writing. Nina's energy comes off strong right from the start, so I hope it inspires and motivates you to hit the pages running. Marion talks about her early days in Hollywood, Happy Days, working with and being friends with Ron Howard, Henry Winkler, Anson Williams, Donny Most, Erin Moran and Mr. C himself-Tom Bosely, along with what brought her to write her HIT memoir, My Days: Happy & Otherwise. In her warm and candid memoir, My Days: Happy & Otherwise, Marion shares loving recollections from the award-winning Happy Days team from break-out star Henry Winkler to Cunningham 'wild child' Erin Moran. Marion shares what it was like to be a starry-eyed young girl with dreams in poor, rural Minnesota, and the resilience, sacrifices, and determination it took to make them come true. She recalls her early years in the business, being in the company of such luminaries as Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, and Noel Coward, yet always feeling the Hollywood outsider-a painful invisibility that mirrored her own childhood. She reveals the absolute joys of playing a wife and mother on TV, and the struggles of maintaining those roles in real life. Among Ross's most heart-rending recollections are those of finally finding a soul mate-another secret hope of hers made true well beyond her expectations.  Funny, poignant, revealing and featuring Gary Marshall's final illuminating interview, as well as a touching forward from her 'TV son' Ron Howard, and her conversation with her real-life son Jim Meskimen (IG: @jimpressions), Marion Ross's story is one of inspiration, persistence, and gratitude. It's also a glowing tribute to all those who fulfilled her dreams and in turn, gave us some of the happiest days of our own lives.  Get her book, My Days: Happy & Otherwise at www.amazon.com ISBN-10: 1496715152 ISBN-13: 978-14967145159   Next is our friend and the King of the Hamptons Zach Erdem (IG: @zacherdem), owner of 75 MAIN restaurant in Southampton and the STAR of the HIT reality TV show 'Serving The Hamptons', now playing on (IG: Discoveryplus). Zach talks all things 'Serving The Hamptons', his restaurant 75 Main (IG: @75main) and the sun-filled fun he and his staff have serving the Hamptons locals and celebs.  Zach also talks about his humble start in the restaurant biz. Naomi Grossman joins me today to talk about her journey into acting and we also talk about American Horror Story and about how she got her role as Pepper. Naomi Grossman was a 2018 Primetime Emmy nominee for “Outstanding Actress in a Short Form Comedy or Drama” for her role in Ctrl Alt Delete. Best known as the first crossover character, the fan-favorite “Pepper” on FX's hit anthology series, American Horror Story: Asylum & Freak Show, Naomi also appeared as a new character, the Satanist “Samantha Crowe” in the eighth season, Apocalypse, as well as “Rabid Ruth” in the spin-off series, American Horror Stories. Naomi made #5 of IMDb's “Top 10 Breakout Stars” after her STARmeter skyrocketed to #1, making her the most searched in its entire 8 million person database. Huffington Post, The Wrap, Screen Rant, and Syfy all ranked Pepper among “The Best AHS Characters Ever;” MTV named her their “#1 Good Guy;” Uproxx, their “#1 Most Tragic;” Geek Insider, a “Top 5 Most Underrated AHS Performer;” and Entertainment Weekly called her being cast in the role “The Best of 2012.” Fans may also recognize her from cameos in the following feature films: Table for Three, The Chair, 1BR, Sky Sharks, Bite Me, Painkillers, The Lurker, Murder RX, The Portal, Preacher Six, An Accidental Zombie (Named Ted), and Fear, Inc. Naomi prides herself on having paved her own, albeit unorthodox path to mainstream success by writing, producing and starring in several autobiographical solo shows. Her latest, Carnival Knowledge: Love, Lust, and other Human Oddities, enjoyed a twice-extended, sold-out run and rave reviews (“Recommended” by LA Weekly). It was then reprised at the world-famous fringe theatre festival in Edinburgh, Scotland, where it received more critical praise (4 stars: The Scotsman, Broadway Baby, Fringe Review) and a transfer to London's West End (Leicester Square Theatre). It later went on to have a successful run Off-Off Broadway. Naomi's first solo endeavor, Girl in Argentine Landscape, also received critical acclaim (LA Weekly, “Pick of the Week”) and earned her an LA Weekly Theatre Award nomination for best solo performance. Naomi toured with Girl… to Chicago's Single File Festival, the Los Angeles Women's Theatre Festival, the New York International Fringe Festival, and screened a subtitled video-version on the big screen in Argentina. Her numerous self-penned/produced, comedic shorts have screened at nationwide film festivals and are available for view on comedy sites like FunnyOrDie. Naomi is a theatre graduate of Northwestern University, and a veteran of the legendary Groundlings Sunday Company. https://naomigrossman.net

Life (UN)Closeted: LGBTQ & Heterosexual Coming Out Stories & Advice for coming out of life's closets!

Imagine being cast in a major motion picture, and suddenly having to fight your truth, or at least hide it until you are ready. You fight it, don't want to confront it, and basically avoid it because you have to heal yourself before you can be yourself. Sound familiar. Brian Falduto of "Fancy Pants" fame from the movie School of Rock, had to start hiding and confronting his truth at age 11, in front of the world. Then he realized, his truth is his truth. Now this actor, singer, and life coach, guides others to freely step into their truth without shame. We're kicking off this pre-pride show with a fun and candid conversation about letting healing guide you to your truth to have PRIDE in yourself. Also make sure you stay on the lookout fro Brian's new music video - God Loves Me Too - being released during PRIDE season. About BrianAt the age of 11, Brian was cast alongside Jack Black by casting director Ilene Starger and Golden Globe-winning director Richard Linklater in the Scott Rudin / Paramount Pictures film School of Rock as Billy, a.k.a. (“Fancy Pants”). Brian returned to working on and pursuing his craft in college. A dual-degree graduate in Theatre Performance and Arts Administration, Brian proudly calls himself an alumnus of Wagner College. Since college, Brian has immersed himself back into the industry, working with renowned theatre organizations such as the Broadway PR firm DKC/O&M, the Broadway producing company Jujamcyn Theatres, the regional Paper Mill Playhouse, the Off-Broadway show Fuerza Bruta, the Venus / Adonis Theatre Festival, and the New York International Fringe Festival. He has also taken a dive into the world of radio with various formats including 95.5 WPLJ, 77WABC on the AM dial, and Radio 103.9. However, he is especially proud of the role he had in helping bring country music back to NYC with NASH FM 94.7, the flagship station of the now national and influential NASH brand. Bit by the music industry bug, Brian is now a singer-songwriter himself, delivering heartfelt lyrics through infectious melodies. His debut, acoustic EP, “Love One Another” was released on June 13, 2017 and within 24 hours hit #94 on the US iTunes Singer-Songwriter charts. By the end of the week, it was #64 on this same chart in the UK and #31 for overall album sales on iTunes in Norway. Prior to releasing his 2018 Live Performance Session series on YouTube, Brian spent the majority of 2017 sharing his music live in concert throughout the tri-state area and also devoted some time partnering with various non-profits including The Trevor Project, H.D.S.A. (Huntington’s Disease Society of America), S.A.G.E. (Services & Advocacy for GLBT Elders), and H.E.A.R.T. (Help Educate At Risk Teens Foundation), all causes dear to his heart. Brian was recently named one of the “20 most influential, outspoken, and optimistic individuals on the planet” by PrideLife Magazine in their 20th Anniversary #20intheir20s issue. The past few Pride seasons have brought great opportunities for Brian to continue his advocacy for the LGBTQ community with Broadway Sings for Pride at their 8th & 9th annual star-studded benefit concerts for the Tyler Clementi Foundation & through his own efforts organizing NYC's 1st ever LGBT Songwriter's Night in support of The Trevor Project, a now annual event. Most recently, Brian has had some amazing opportunities to share his life story openly and honestly through both a self-written piece in The Advocate and a heartfelt interview with Now This News, both of which have since gone viral. Brian is the founder of his own life coaching business in compliance with the International Coach Federation standards and is part of the marketing committee for the Gay Coaches Alliance. He also hosts "The Gay Life Coach Podcast," which provides biweekly queer mindfulness content & can be found on Instagram as @thegaylifecoach. Why We Love Tara: Tara Schuster is an author, playwright, and accomplished entertainment executive, serving as the Vice President of Talent and Development at Comedy Central.  She is currently the Executive in Charge of Lights Out with David Spade, was the Executive in Charge of the Emmy® and Peabody Award-winning Key & Peele, the Emmy® Award winning @Midnight, and numerous other shows including Another Period, Detroiters, and Hood Adjacent. For her work on Key & Peele, Chris Hardwick has called her “brilliant” and Jordan Peele remarked that she is “ahead of her time...she sees the future a little bit.” Her plays have been performed in The New York International Fringe Festival and her writing has appeared in The New Yorker and Forbes online. In February 2020, Tara released her first book titled Buy Yourself the F*cking Lilies: and Other Rituals to Fix Your Life from Someone Who has Been There (The Dial Press). The book debuted at #1 in New Releases in Self-Help on Amazon Kindle, is a starred review in Publisher’s Weekly, and has been covered by People Magazine, Forbes, The Hollywood Reporter, and Newsweek among others. The hilarious and relatable self-help/memoir tells the story of Tara’s path to re-parenting herself and becoming a “ninja of self-love.” By the time Tara was in her late twenties, she was a rising TV executive who had worked for The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and helped launch Key & Peele to viral superstardom. By all appearances, she had mastered being a grown-up. But beneath that veneer of success, she was a chronically anxious, self-medicating mess. No one knew that her road to adulthood had been paved with depression, anxiety, and shame, owing in large part to her minimally parented upbringing. After drunk dialing her therapist on her 25th birthday, she knew she needed a wake up call. Through simple, daily rituals, Tara transformed her mind, body, and relationships and hopes to help readers do the same. Her aim for the book is to help people create a life they truly, totally f*cking LOVE. In her free time, Tara enjoys writing, traveling and hiking. She has been on The Motion Picture Television Fund’s NextGen board for the past four years years and produced their prestigious Reel Stories, Real Lives the past two years. She resides in Los Angeles, California. On the Pod, We Discuss: Why Tara’s book is so relatable and hits home for many women seeking self-care The moment she decided to change her life and begin re-parenting herself Why small changes are more effective than making major life overhauls Why journaling is such an effective tool for building awareness and cultivating what Tara calls an expansive “Oprah mind” Self-care during this global pandemic and how to prevent ourselves from spiraling ‘The frenemy within’ and how to handle our mean inner critic Real self-care and how it’s different than artificial, consumerist self-care A framework to curb mindless drinking - especially during a crisis - if it’s feeling destructive Why taking yourself seriously is so important and what that actually looks like in action And so much more Helpful Links:  Buy Tara’s book, Buy Yourself the F*cking Lilies: and Other Rituals to Fix Your Life from Someone Who has Been There Visit Tara’s website and subscribe to her weekly newsletter Follow Tara on Instagram The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl Dr. Tara Brach

Hello and welcome to The Rob Burgess Show. I am, of course, your host, Rob Burgess. On this, our 87th episode, our guest is Carlos Dengler. Here is his biography: “In 1998 I co-founded the band Interpol with Daniel Kessler and Paul Banks. Sam Fogarino joined in 2000, and over the next decade we went on to release four studio albums and tour the world three times, playing numerous festivals, live radio shows and late night TV. Interpol's first two albums have gone Gold in the United States and the band is regarded as a seminal indie rock band of the early millennium. “In 2007, I began experiencing personal and creative differences with my bandmates and the music industry. In 2009, the band entered group therapy to try to find a way to resolve those differences. Despite our best collective efforts over the course of a year, we could not do so, and I wasn't able to stay. I left the band just before New Year's Day 2010. “Actor training became my new focus. For the next five years I spent virtually all of my time within the privacy of conservatory classrooms, around other young students who were undergoing a similar process of discovery. In 2012, I was fortunate to be accepted to New York University Graduate Acting and received a Master of Fine Arts degree in the spring of 2015. “I made my professional acting debut in the summer of 2015 at the Dorset Theatre Festival, in the regional premiere of Katie Forgette's very funny 'Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Jersey Lily,' playing two roles – Professor Moriarty's lackey, John Smythe and chief attendant to Queen Victoria, Abdul Karim. “I've also begun working on an essayistic memoir. I'm quite excited by some of the directions the work is taking so far. I've started soliciting publishers. It's very early in the process and I will continue to update as things progress. “In late March 2016 I had the honor of performing with the 8G Band, the house band on 'Late Night with Seth Meyers.' It truly was a special experience to play bass guitar with such incredible musicians on such a fun and exciting show. “I was very excited to have presented my solo show, 'Homo Sapiens Interruptus,' at The New York International Fringe Festival in August 2016. The show was created while I was at NYU and had been developing and workshopping it consistently since it began.” You can catch Carlos this week as he stars in “A Proust Sonata,” a “multimedia concert-theater work conceived and directed by Sarah Rothenberg, artistic and general director of Da Camera. The production is inspired by Marcel Proust's early 20th century masterpiece 'In Search of Lost Time' and interweaves text, music, and image into an innovative multi-media performance.” Performances start at 8 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the Lois Chiles Studio Theater at the Moody Center for the Arts at Rice University, 6100 Main St., Houston, Texas. It’s immediately clear that Tom Pearson and Zach Morris of Third Rail Projects take great pleasure in their work and that the personal bond between them creates an atmosphere of trust and courage that nourishes their entire artistic team. The dancer-choreographers spoke with me today about their partnership, their creative process and “Vanishing Point,” a new presentation at Danspace Project (June 26-28). BIOS TOM PEARSON Tom Pearson works in a variety of media. Each work introduces its own movement and/or visual vocabulary, defined by the parameters of the subject and performance environment. Pearson’s work ranges from the surreal to the absurd, and part of his creative project includes an examination of American Indian identity in urban situations and everyday circumstances. Through the lens of a contemporary movement vocabulary, he creates dense, evocative worlds that illuminate the transient and the transformational, using movement abstracted from and coupled with everyday action. Paired with this is a fierce percussive abandon, often complimented by meditative nuance. Likewise, Pearson uses art installation to achieve rich, multi-dimensional environments, and site-specific explorations seek to mine public spaces for hidden meaning and to capture and engage unwary and uninitiated passersby. Tom Pearson has been commissioned to create original site-specific works as part of Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s SiteLines series, the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian in New York, and American Express’s River to River Festival; by Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts for the 2006 Lincoln Center Out of Doors Festival; and by the Hong Kong Youth Arts Foundation for the SWIRE ISalnd East Urban Dance Festival 2007. His work has been presented in New York by Dixon Place; La Mama E.T.C.; with The Thunderbird Indian Dancers at Theater for the New City; Dance Theater Workshop; Danspace Project at St. Mark’s Church; The New York International Fringe Festival; the D.U.M.B.O. Dance Festival; The Bridge for Dance; and Crazy Cuban Productions/Dance Space Center. Pearson has been supported by creative residencies at LMCC’s MOVE:133 Beekman in space generously provided by General Growth Properties, Inc.; the Great Neck House, Great Neck, NY; by a Harkness Space Grant from the 92nd Street Y Harkness Dance Center; Dance Theater Workshop’s Outer/Space program at Topaz Arts; Epiphany Theater Company; and as part of The Swarthmore Project at Swarthmore College, PA. Tom Pearson is Co-Artistic Director of Third Rail Projects and frequently collaborates with the other members of Third Rail on joint ventures. He received his M.A. in Performance Studies from New York University, his B.F.A. in Dance and B.A. in English from Florida State University. He has taught as an Adjunct Professor of Dance at the Florida School of the Arts; as a movement instructor for Opera Workshop at LaGuardia High School for Music, Art and the Performing Arts (through New York City Opera's Arts-in-Education program); as the Dance Program Coordinator at the award-winning LEVELS teen center in Long Island; and as a part of several other high school and special interest programs and through master classes at Swarthmore College and Florida State University. Pearson's writings on dance have been published in Dance Magazine, Dance Spirit, Time Out New York Kids, and Uncoolkids.com. ZACH MORRIS Zach Morris believes that art should be fun. He also believes it should be well-crafted, engaging and have some meat to it. Most of all, Zach believes that art is a means to an end–a meditative discipline and an on-going investigation of the human condition utilizing a communicative system of images, juxtapositions and metaphors that resonate on a fundamental, intuitive level. As such, he is deeply interested in exploring themes and relationships that illuminate the broader patterns of human experience. He is fascinated with evoking archetypal images and placing them into highly personal or pedestrian contexts. By colliding the mythic with the mundane he has begun to understand how these dream-like images can inform, shape and elucidate our day-to-day existence. Zach hopes to effect positive change by creating projects that allow both the artist and audience to sidestep our preconceived notions about our reality and ourselves, and allow us access to more elusive but equally potent ways of understanding. Some people have written about his work and said it is "wickedly funny", "visually stunning" and "hauntingly melancholy." Other people have said, "there is no escaping the feeling that you have been doing drugs for the past hour. Good drugs." Zach is a director, choreographer, author, visual artist, and filmmaker. His work has been seen in London, at several theaters around the US and at numerous venues in New York City including: the South Street Seaport as part of the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council's SiteLines Series, Dance Theater Workshop, Dance New Amsterdam, University Settlement/The New York Fringe Festival, Dixon Place, the Williamsburg Art Nexus, and The Merce Cunningham Studio. He has received the Henry Boettcher Award for Excellence in Directing, the NYC Fringe Fest Award for Excellence in Choreography, and has been granted residencies or commissions from La Mama, LMCC, the Swarthmore Project, The Great Neck House, Epiphany Theatre Company, Dance Theater Workshop’s Outer/Space program at Topaz Arts, and others. Zach is Co-Artistic Director of Third Rail Projects and has also served as the Co-Creator and Co-Director of the Westbeth New Works Program; the National and International Programs Associate at Dance Theater Workshop; the Bartender at a number of questionable establishments; and most recently, as the Dance Coordinator at LEVELS, a teen-center based in Long Island.
