After the collapse of the Soviet Union, six US presidential administrations of both parties pursued policies for Russia, Ukraine, and Eurasia that emboldened Russia, playing into its imperialist, centuries-long mythos of regional hegemony. The result: military aggression and full-scale invasion. It was all too foreseeable. In The Folly of Realism, leading national security expert and bestselling author Alexander Vindman argues that America's mistakes in Eastern Europe result from policymakers' fixation on immediate, short-term problem-solving and misplaced hopes and fears. He proposes a new long-term, values-based approach that insists on the fundamentals of liberal democracy and a rules-based world order.Alexander Vindman, lieutenant colonel US Army (retired), was the director for European Affairs on the White House's National Security Council, former Political-Military Affairs Officer for Russia, and diplomat at the American Embassies in Moscow and Kyiv. He is a senior fellow at the Foreign Policy Institute, the author of the New York Times–bestselling memoir Here, Right Matters, and leads the Here Right Matters Foundation organization which focuses on helping Ukraine win the war against Russia.Michael previously spoke with Col. Vindman about his book "Here, Right Matters" in 2022, listen in Episode 162.
In his address to the IIEA, Dr Vindman examines the Russia-Ukraine War: Past, Present, and Future. He discusses the roots of the war and its conduct to date, highlighting the conflict's effects on European security, the trans-Atlantic alliance, and broader geopolitics. Dr Vindman also provides analysis on how the war is likely to unfold and conclude. His assessment of the war will be contextualised within the global clash between democracy and authoritarianism, with prescriptions on what the West must do to win. Ben and Aaron speak with Alexander Vindman – the man who literally wrote the book on Trump – Here, Right Matters – detailing his decision to report the phone call between Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelenskyy, resulting in Trump's impeachment.
0900, Thursday, July 25, 2019: President Trump called Ukraine's President Zelensky, supposedly to congratulate him on his recent victory. In the months that followed, the American public would only learn what happened on that call because Alexander Vindman felt duty-bound to report it up the chain of command: that the President of the United States had extorted a foreign ally to damage a political challenger at home. Vindman's actions and subsequent testimony before congress would lead to Trump's impeachment and affirm Vindman's belief that he had done the right thing in the face of intense pressure to stay silent. But it would come at an enormous cost, straining relationships with colleagues, superiors, and even his own father, and eventually end his decorated career in the US Army, by a Trump administration intent on retribution. ---------- SPEAKER: Alexander Vindman is a retired U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel, was most recently the director for Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, and Russia on the White House's National Security Council. Previously, he served as the Political-Military Affairs Officer for Russia for the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and as an attaché at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow, Russia. While on the Joint Staff, he co-authored the National Military Strategy Russia Annex and was the principal author for the Global Campaign for Russia. Few people understand how much bravery it took Cassidy Hutchinson to testify better than Lt. Col. Alex Vindman, who sacrificed his own military career to come forward after Trump tried to blackmail Ukrainian President Zelenskyy. Now, Alex rejoins Winter is Here to discuss what gives people the bravery to come forward, what might come out of January 6th, and how this all relates to Putin's horrific invasion of Ukraine. Lieutenant Colonel Alexander S. Vindman (Retired) was most recently the director for Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, and Russia on the White House’s National Security Council. His book “Here, Right Matters” (HarperCollins) was published in 2021. This is a public episode. Last week, State Department spokesperson Ned Price, fielded tough questions from AP reporter Matt Lee about the US Government's claims that Russian forces were planning to mount a phony false flag attack in order to provide a pre-text for an invasion of Ukraine. It was a classic moment in which a Biden Administrative Official was forced to answer that most fundamental of questions that should always be asked when the government makes bold assertions about the perfidy of a foreign power. What's the evidence? Price declined to do so leaving the press and much of the public leaving to wonder, does US intelligence really have the goods to back up its claims? Or was this just one more front in a much larger information warfare battle in which the Biden Whitehouse is trying to spook the Kremlin to forgo its plans to seize control of a neighboring country? As the world sits on edge of what Putin may or may not do, we talk to cyber security expert Dmitri Alperovitch about what we should expect over the next several weeks.GUEST:Dmitri Alperovitch (@DAlperovitch), Chairman, Silverado Policy Accelerator; Co-Founder & Former CTO @CrowdStrikeHOSTS:Michael Isikoff (@Isikoff), Chief Investigative Correspondent, Yahoo NewsDaniel Klaidman (@dklaidman), Editor in Chief, Yahoo NewsVictoria Bassetti (@VBass), fellow, Brennan Center for Justice (contributing co-host)RESOURCES:Vindman lawsuit story and information - Here.Vindman's book Here, Right Matters for purchase - Here.Follow us on Twitter: @SkullduggeryPodListen and subscribe to "Skullduggery" on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts.Email us with feedback, questions or tips: SkullduggeryPod@yahoo.com. Back in 2019, United States Army Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Vindman, testified about the notorious phone call between then President Trump and Ukrainian President Zelensky. The one where Trump pressured the new foreign leader to launch investigations into that would embarrass Joe Biden and his son Hunter. Vindman's plain spoken account was a pivotal and dramatic moment that ultimately led to Trump's first impeachment. But Vindman's closing words addressed to his father who brought his family from the old Soviet Union to the United States more than forty years ago has an eerie echo today. Despite his assurance to his Dad then, "Don't worry I'll be alright for telling the truth," Vindman last week filed a lawsuit against Donald Trump Jr., Rudy Giuliani, and two other former White House Aides accusing them of running a coordinated intimidation and retaliation campaign against him. That he alleges has cost him significant financial emotional and reputational harm. Vindman joins us to discuss, and as a former Ukraine analyst on the National Security Council, we also talk to him about the current Russian threat to Ukraine.GUEST:Alexander Vindman (@AVindman), Retired United States Army Lieutenant Colonel, AuthorHOSTS:Michael Isikoff (@Isikoff), Chief Investigative Correspondent, Yahoo NewsDaniel Klaidman (@dklaidman), Editor in Chief, Yahoo NewsVictoria Bassetti (@VBass), fellow, Brennan Center for Justice (contributing co-host)RESOURCES:Vindman lawsuit story and information - Here.Vindman's book Here, Right Matters for purchase - Here.Follow us on Twitter: @SkullduggeryPodListen and subscribe to "Skullduggery" on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts.Email us with feedback, questions or tips: SkullduggeryPod@yahoo.com. Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Vindman joins Michael McFaul on World Class to discuss why values and integrity are crucial to upholding democratic norms here in the United States, and why democracies everywhere should support and encourage those norms in places like Ukraine. His testimony before Congress was key part of President Trump's first impeachment trial in 2019 over his phone call to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. He shares his story of becoming an unexpected public figure, and the life experiences that guided his decisions in his book, Here, Right Matters.

Alex Vindman – Here, Right Matters - Retired Army Lieutenant Colonel Alex Vindman came to the nation's attention during the first impeachment of President Donald Trump. LTC Vindman didn't think what he heard in the President's call to Ukrainian President Zelenksy was appropriate. Feeling compelled to act, Vindman reported what he heard...Alex's testimony proved one of the critical bits of testimony in the trial. Get Alex's book Here, Right Matters on Amazon at Long before the phone call, or LTC Vindman's report...partisan goals poisoned the US's government. Each party playing an ever increasingly dangerous game. Consuming people like Christine Blassey Ford and others as truncheons to attack the other party. Gender roles. The topic that seems to haunt me. I've been struggling with whether gender roles in the home and church are Biblical since college (at least...maybe even a bit in high school). The topic just keeps coming up for me and I felt a few months ago that it was time to go all in and figure it out, if it can be figured out. In this process I've chatted with my friends and family to learn more about their opinions and see what they think of all the research I've been doing. It's been enlightening and several friends have asked for updates on what I'm learning. So here's part 1, a long-winded explanation of my formative thoughts on Christian gender roles. Lt. Colonel Alexander Vindman knew when he went into the Trump White House to work on the National Security Council that he may be asked to do things that were "awful but lawful." As a serving army officer in those cases he would be obligated to follow the orders of the Commander-in-Chief. But he also knew there was a line that he would not cross. He would not follow an unlawful order, he would not help even the president break the law. As a result of his conscience--which drew directly on his military experience and prior to that on the values inculcated in him by his family--the course of history was altered. Imagine what might have happened had Donald Trump gotten the government of Ukraine to help him smear candidate Joe Biden? Where would we be now? We discuss Vindman's story--told in his excellent new book, "Here, Right Matters"--with him in this special edition of the podcast. It's a compelling, candid conversation. Don't miss it. On Thursday morning, July 25, 2019, then-President Donald Trump made a congratulatory phone call to Ukraine's newly elected President Volodymyr Zelensky. In the months that followed, the true nature of that conversation would be revealed to the American public due to the moral stance of one man: Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Vindman. Faced with a moment of truth for his nation, Vindman felt duty-bound to report it up the chain of command that the president of the United States had extorted a foreign ally to damage a political challenger at home. Now, for the first time, Alexander Vindman is telling his story of how he ended up at the center of a firestorm for his decision to report the infamous phone call that led to the presidential impeachment. As an immigrant raised by a father who fled the Soviet Union in pursuit of a better life for his children, Vindman had to learn how to build a life from scratch and take big risks to achieve important goals. In his new book, Here, Right Matters, he discusses how, in the face of sure-fire career derailment and intense public scrutiny, he put it all on the line to protect American democracy. Join us for Alexander Vindman's passionate and candid account of his family, his career and his exposure of what he considered a grave abuse of power. In this episode, my friend Terhys and I talk a bit about our names and how they are tied to our identities. My name has always been a bit of a sensitive issue for me because up until a few years ago, I deliberately mispronounced my name to make myself seem less "foreign". It never sat right with me though, because I always knew that I was denying an integral part of myself. Have a listen and let me know what you think. And if you also have your own "name angst" experiences, then feel free to share!!
