S4E7: Healing trauma through natural connection with Amos Rodriguez BIOHiking and hunting the hills and volcanoes of Central America in the 80's and 90's gave Amós Rodriguez a foundation for his primitive skills life's practice. Growing up in the context of the U.S. financed civil war in El Salvador increased his urban and wilderness survival and awareness skills; both of which are essential for striving in our modern society. During the post-war period, Amós assisted rural communities devastated by the violence. This experiences increased his humanism, his self identification as a native of Central America and highlighted the need to be an advocate for strong sustainable communities.  In the fall of 2000, he received a scholarship to finish his higher education in the United States. This education as well as travel experiences in the American continent allowed him to move deeper into his connection to place, ancestry, and self. Spiritual journeys, such as the Sundance Ceremony of the Oglala Lakota Sioux, have reinforced the pillars in which his Spiritual life and practice are based. “In 2006 I attended a ceremony in South Dakota called the Sun Dance at the wild horse sanctuary in The Sacred Paha Sapa Mountains. This experience changed my life. I continued attending the ceremony run by the Afraid of Bear and American Horse tiospayes as a supporter, and I have danced the Sundance from 2011-2018. This spiritual practice is a very important but humble prayer and is one of many important native rituals, some of which are similar to the prayers that the Maya / lenca / pipil communities practiced in Mesoamerica during pre-Columbian times. One of such ceremonies is the Inipi / Temazcal or purification ceremony, which takes place on a covered dome and is heated by pouring water on hot stones. These rituals are part of my spiritual life and practice, which is also accompanied by the continuous learning of primitive skills.” Topics discussed:Overcoming trauma with natural connectionPrimitive skillsBuilding empathy and compassion for othersBuilding community and strong relationships Resources mentioned:Alone (Season 7)White Pine Wilderness AcademyConnect with Amos:Website:White Pine Wilderness AcademyInstagram: Amos Rodriguez

About Jonathan:Born in Dallas, TX in 1980, Jonathan's first artistic endeavor began at the University of Pennsylvania where he started basic drawing and figure drawing courses. On September of 2002, Jon embarked on his journey to pursue a career in art. Having no prior experience making art, he set off towards his goal of becoming a professional artist. Jon's journey was unique in that he began logging every step of his process, much of it you can see on this video. On an art blog website he posted every single drawing or painting he created without fail. Nine years later, individuals logging on to his thread could see all the struggle, frustration, and success that came with along the journey. His drive for more rigorous and traditional training led him to apply to the classical realist atelier, Pantura Studios, to study under masters Hans-Peter Szameit and Sanna Tomac. After studying for nearly three years, Jonathan and his wife moved to Dallas, Texas where he began building his body of work and honing his skill set. In addition, for nearly ten years, he has been teaching traditional atelier methods to a small group of committed and talented students. Jonathan has sold many paintings and his work is included in various collections throughout the United States. Jonathan has also been exhibited in invitational shows both nationally and in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area.Jonathan's challenge:My son and I have been talking about doing an adventure like a road trip, kicking around the idea and I thought it'd be really awesome to force myself to do it to to say I've got to do this. In 2012, Ben completed an Ironman Triathlon in Lake Placid, NY. When he crossed the finish line, he felt on top of the world. But the celebrations ended, and life grew quiet fast. It was in this quiet that Ben noticed something about his life: He was lonely. The next year, Ben spent his 30th birthday sitting on his couch alone. He realized his tunnel vision for goals and achievements had created a life of isolation. For thirty years, he had given people the stiff arm to his heart -- and he was painfully aware. After taking an in-depth inventory of his life, his priorities began to change. This new perspective involved people instead of performance. Relationships with others and with God became his central focus. Following this shift, healthy and authentic relationships began to form in his life. It was through this process that Ben learned a powerful truth he now lives by: Relationships aren't just something. Relationships are everything. Today, Ben's life looks different. His new approach has enabled him to regain his confidence while combatting insecurity and fear. Through vulnerable and authentic relationships, Ben has re-discovered his talents, passions, and calling. With relationships at the center, he is no longer running the race of life in isolation. Ben believes the world deserves a better generation of men, and he wants to help give it to them. His mission is simple -- to help guys reclaim the confidence they need to build strong relationships and make their dent in this world. Ben earned his master's degree in Christian Education/Theology from Dallas Theological Seminary. He is a native of St. Louis, where he has served as a Youth Pastor since 2011 and currently lives with his wife and daughter. He loves adventure, good music, long bike rides, snowboarding trips with the guys, tacos with his incredible family, and donuts. Challenge:Find a few friends to do a day hike or an overnight and get it on the calendar. What we talked about:Growing up in the MidwestMinistry pathBusiness as sanctificationFollowing God in the marketplaceBeing vs becomingRelying on God in business and relationshipsStorybrand process Resources:Ben's book, Relationships are Everything Connect with Ben:WebsiteInstagram Thanks for tuning in!Thanks for joining us on today's episode of the Anthem of the Adventurer podcast! S4E1 Challenge is What Men Need with Robert OwensRobert Hamilton Owens is a man of many hats. He's been and done a lot – mountain climbing, radio and TV personality, keynote speaker, minister, Ironman, philanthropist, triathlete, Special Ops Pararescueman, and father of five – to name a few. But of all the pursuits he's undertaken, there's one title that best describes this literal force of nature: Robert is The Fittest and Mentally Toughest 66-Year-Old in the World. Period. “My goal is to be the longest active Ironman in the world,” Owens says. The 140.6-mile Ironman (2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bicycle ride and 26.3-mile run, all done without a break) is among the shorter competitions Robert's put himself through. At age 65 he embarked on the 238 mile “300 of Sparta Endurance Race,” an eight-day endurance race in Greece to help raise over $315,000 for the families of fallen Navy SEAL contractors who died at Benghazi. A mere four days before his 66th birthday, Robert took on the SEALFIT's Kokoro 50-Hour Challenge, originally created to train Special Operations Candidates. He was the oldest of the group by 25 years to finish, and at the same time became the oldest to ever complete the challenge, for which he was awarded the “Most Advanced Age Ever Award” by SEALFIT. And then without any training, he took on the Ironman Mexico – his 12th Ironman. And in January, 2018, Robert took on and completed "The World Marathon Challenge – 7 Marathons 7 Continents 7 Days.” Today on the show, we'll hear from Robert about his adventures throughout life, and some direct challenges to us as men that will change how you think about the way you live (no hyperbole here). This week's adventure challenge:Grab a couple of buddies and listen to this episode together. No one leaves the room until you all write down three takeaways from the episode. “The Lord needed to put me in Pharoah's army to grow me up because the church couldn't. S3E9: S3E10: Living an adventurous life with Nick DevlinNick Devlin a transformational life coach, entrepreneur, father and former US Army Ranger. His mission is to empower you to live your life as an adventure - with peace, passion and intention. He does this by helping you embrace uncertainty and envision the life you want to live (your adventure). He guides you through first steps and hold you accountable for taking action. In addition to coaching sessions by phone and in person, he takes you out in the wilderness for "adventure coaching sessions" to get you out of your head and into your heart. He listens, reflects, and supports you to grow. He celebrates your successes and push you to be brave, go farther, and does it together.Throughout this bold and adventurous life, he has won and lost. He has played with the fear of the deep unknown. He has tasted the sweet victory resulting from dedicated effort and hard work. He has felt the pain of trying to control things beyond my control. As a recovering “control addict” and former corporate employee (asleep at the wheel of my life), he has felt the struggle of living disconnectedly – void of true purpose – a vassal to the grind and societal expectations. He's been stuck in the preservation zone, playing safe and playing small.  He got unstuck when a life coach, and friend, asked me one pivotal question. It was the question that cut deep and shook me to the core. It shook me awake - wide awake. He grabbed the wheel, and redirected my course towards passion and purpose. He chose to live with intention and explore the possibilities of my most adventurous life. With critical guidance from my coach – he now lives his adventure. It's his turn to help you live yours!   Nick's challenge:Face a fear that you have, ideally a social fear. Something that's challenging you to get out of your comfort zone to have an important conversation to clear the air, maybe apologize for something, or ask for help. So often we're used to staying safe and in our comfort zone. So let's get out of that this week!  Life is full of moments of pain and struggle. And there's lots of moments of triumph, of connection and goodness and wholeness. Lots of moments of love. Today on the show:Living fully inspired every dayWhat does a life full of adventure look like and feel like?  Mentioned Resources:Life Coaching with Nick Connect with Nick:WebsiteFacebookInstagramLinkedIn  Thanks for tuning in!Thanks for joining us on today's episode of the Anthem of the Adventurer podcast! Since 2012, he has traveled around the world with Danny Silk as a speaker and consultant for Loving on Purpose. He has been married for 30 years to his wife, Lauren, and they have four children. Today on the show, we'll hear from Bob Hasson and Shawn Bolz about how we're all wired to hear God's voice in different ways, and how listening and responding can have profound effects on our lives and how we operate in the world. This week's adventure challenges from Bob and Shawn are:We all have something we're dealing with and need God's guidance on. Do a two week experiment. Put the issue before the Lord. Many times we go into our prayer closet with a list and we just go through what we need to pray. Instead of just taking 5 minutes to listen to answers to these massive problems, what Bob is proposing is that we take two weeks and be aware of all the different ways the Lord speaks. Prophecy, wisdom, mentors, through friends who are going through unrelated things. This will put us on the road to seeing God in a new way. Shawn's challenge is a companion to Bob's. The Bible over and over repeats how God is love. Take time this week to do an exercise and look at 1 Corinthians 13 and wherever the word "love" appears insert "God" when reading it. Then, insert your own name in the passage and ask yourself how you're doing on all the aspects of love, patience, kindness, not envying, not boasting, not being proud, etc. When we look at the Scriptures, we find what God is like, and we do our best to emulate Him. So we need to look at what does love look like practically, every day, tangibly. “You have been given powerful tools to make a difference in your life and the lives of those around you. It is time to gaina hope-filled view of the ways in which you already hear from God about your life and the work of your hands, andexplore the things He is saying to you, for the sake of the world.” Today on the show:Bob challenges us to take a new perspective in our prayer timeShawn challenges us to emulate love in our careers and places of influenceMarketplace leaders will be on the front lines of the next move of GodWe discuss their new book, Wired to Hear and how it's a manual to walking out what God speaks and solving difficult problemsGoing after risk and adventure while being connected to GodThere is a process to growing in heating God's voice Quotes from their book:On Hearing“God is dreaming over and guiding humanity all the time, but He also does more than speak to us; He gives us His nature,  mind, and heart.” (p. 4)  “The goal of hearing God in our everyday lives is not to evangelize every moment but to walk with God in connection. As  we do, we begin to see God's grace and influence in everything. This, in turn, creates a demonstration of His love to the  world around us.” (p. 5) “When we learn to see our wins in life, our greatest successes, through spiritual eyes, we can reverse engineer how we got  there. What made you follow that path? What prompted you to have that thought? There, in the midst of gut decisions and  seemingly random ideas, is God's voice.” (p. 9) On Work“We believe that we are on the precipice of a transformation within the marketplace and the church. The age that we live  in with the technology that we have and the ability to get information at the touch of a finger is an invitation to blend  marketplace leadership within the church.” (p. 19)  “When we build our teams or pursue our careers, we need the humility to build with people who are smarter than us so  that we can rely on their wisdom and knowledge for the common good of the project, the organization, the role, or the  service that we're providing. God loves a humble heart; it is the currency of hearing His voice and understanding the work  He has called you to do.” (p. 23) “By pursuing your career in the marketplace, you are furthering God's purpose to restore all things, to love the entire  world, and to bring humanity into relationship with Him.” (p. 25) On Influence“This is not a church-centric move of God. He is not only speaking to cultural leaders in every area of life. He is speaking  to each one of us about our call to serve and love within the marketplace. He is placing us in positions of influence— whether influence over an entire organization or industry or influence with a single co-worker—so that we can bring life  and light to those around us. He is giving us influence so that we can serve the world.” (p. 28)  “You were not put in your job or in a place of influence simply to invite someone to church or preach the gospel on your  lunch break. You were called to your position, whatever it may be, to serve and demonstrate God's love to those around  you in very practical ways.” (p. 32)“The work you are doing right now is an important part of your life and your role in the world. It may not be your favorite  job, your most desired job, or even your dream job, but you are there right now for a reason, and God has a plan for you.  He wants to partner with you in every season in whatever position of authority or influence you may have.” (p. 42-43)  On Process“Our process will always look different from the average person because our motivation is different. As Christians, we  have a clearly defined biblical parameter in which we build our goals, a parameter that connects everything we do to our  relationship with God.” (p. 50)  “There is no defined five-step process to success with God. Instead, our lives become a trust fall. As we trust Him and  hear His voice, we slowly learn to walk the path He has laid out for us.” (p. 52) “Making plans with God is building strategies that are bathed in prayer. It is getting our house in order so that we can be a  blessing to those around us and pass down a spiritual, financial, and emotional inheritance. That is the process and the  journey that we are on with God.” (p. 56) On Intuition“God never took away the benefit of being made in His image, regardless of our belief systems or even our lifestyles. As a  matter of fact, God gave humanity His nature as a free gift and it works with or without a born-again experience. His  nature, however, is perfected in us and brought into wholeness and everlasting fruit when it's chosen through a  relationship with Jesus.” (p. 64)  “God has wired us all with this extraordinary revelation infrastructure that includes intuition, instinct, hearing God, and  discernment. The more we listen to Him in these ways, the easier it is to hear and the better the decisions we will make in  every part of our lives. The more we push our instinct and intuition away, the harder it is to hear, and the quality of our  decisions reflects this.” (p. 77) On Wisdom“It is through God's wisdom, and a Kingdom mindset of love and servitude, that we are able to radically transform our  industries and fulfill our marketplace callings.” (p. 80)  “In the marketplace, when you learn to think like God, you prosper. You are not limited to your human talents, your  societal position, your education, your own awareness; you have God leading you for His purpose and He can take you  beyond what you hope for or imagine.” (p. 89) “As a Christian in the marketplace, your calling is like that of Joseph, Daniel, Esther, and Paul—to shine from the highest  lamp stand you can stand on so that people can see what Jesus looks like through your life. Your calling is to bring  transformation to the culture around you.” (p. 92) On Agenda“Having a pure heart is to live without a hidden agenda. One of the beautiful things about God is that He discloses the  mysteries of the Kingdom to the poor in spirit, the meek, and those who have nothing. There's nothing hidden in God.” (p.  97)  “Apart from remaining pure of heart and honest, one way to avoid hidden agendas, or really any agenda that violates the  purposes of God, is to remind ourselves of this one thing: we don't have to turn the workplace into church. That would be  a mistake. Instead, we must learn to demonstrate the nature of God to those around us by purposing to fulfill the task He  has given us.” (p. 102) On Transforming“When we choose to live out our Kingdom values and partner with God, transformation touches everything we do. Even  those who are completely unfamiliar with God and His ways can recognize the power of transformation on our lives.” (p.  110)“Our lives should be so transformed that we create an environment that people want to be part of. That transformation will  then leak out into our jobs, our passions, and our relationships. If this is not our current reality, then how do we get to the  point where people want to be in our environment in both work and life? Start with feedback. If we're not creating culture  or bringing transformation, it might be because our own transformation hasn't happened yet.” (p. 116-117)  On Perspective“Perspective is the main factor in determining how an event resonates with you, how you feel about a situation, and how  you will remember what happened. It is your ability to process the world around you and what is happening in your inside  world with God.” (p. 119)  “Perspective takes faith. It requires knowing that God chose you and gave you an idea, dream, or calling. It also takes  knowledge, understanding, and wisdom—both from God and in the natural—to keep you moving forward and making  progress on the thing He has called you to.” (p. 131) On Armor“Having the armor of God and a sword of the Spirit as your protecting devices is not just cute sentimentality; it is actually  a way of life. Setting up a prayer schedule and planning it just like you plan the most important meetings in your week are  things that will help you thrive internally, no matter what good or hard thing is happening externally.” (p. 136)  “Every piece of our dynamic weaponry is meant to be used through relationship with God. As we learn to implement this  weaponry in our daily lives and in our careers, we actually reflect God to those around us. We look more like Jesus.” (p.  146) On Prosperity“For every vision there is a provision. Resources, prosperity, and money are not the destiny of God's people, although  they are part of our benefit. When we start to see what God has in store for those who love Him, it is not wealth or  resources; it is walking in full connection with Him, ourselves, and the world around us.” (p. 148)  “God's ultimate goal is always spiritual provision that brings transformation. When God brings a material, relational,  business, or other type of blessing, He always has a spiritual reason behind it.” (p. 159) On Risk“The greatest opportunities come to those who stay open to obedience in places that their own skill, talent, or network  can't bring them. Faith is when you aren't a self-made man or woman, and you don't limit yourself to your own ability,  but you trust that God has more for you than you can perform. Faith is risk.” (p. 165-166)  “It's time to take the risk that is in front of you. Do the feasibility, seek advisers, but learn to take the risk even when it's  unpopular. Don't do it for the benefit of your career or finances as your primary motivator, but do it with and for God.” (p. 171) Mentioned Resources:Wired to HearConnect with Bob and Shawn:Shawn's WebsiteFacebookInstagramTwitter Bob's WebsiteFacebookInstagramLinkedInTwitterYouTube Thanks for tuning in!Thanks for joining us on today's episode of the Anthem of the Adventurer podcast! Currently, he's the Technical Advisor at Lee Valley Tools. When he's not there he's in the shop building furniture or in front of my computer writing articles for various publications. 25 Clarify Your Filter With Tools and Tactics from the Navy SEALs w/ Larry Yatch

Today on the show… We have my friend, Larry Yatch. Now Larry is a special breed of guy: he was bound and determined to be a Navy fighter pilot since he saw the movie Top Gun in 3rd grade, but that changed when a friend gave him a Navy SEAL sweatshirt which would redirect the course of his life. After graduating from the Naval Academy, he would pass the hardest military training in the world to become a Navy SEAL and serve our country with distinction for 10 years as an officer. His military service ended when he was medically retired, but his service to our country continued in the form of building businesses to help others build and execute in high performing teams at work and at home. I met Larry 2 years ago through the Good Dad Project podcast, and have taken a couple of his training courses since then. During the course of that training, I've gotten to know Larry on a more personal level and I'm honored to call him one of my closest friends. He and his wife Anne have created a powerful team in their family and they are creating an amazing impact on the world while leaving a legacy of adventure and service for their boys. In our time today we'll talk about: Lessons from Navy SEAL career: -being able to persevere and self regulate -if it hurts, if I encounter some resistance, that's the direction I get to head into for growth and self awareness -focus on the good things that are coming, instead of the bad things that are around you Striving, struggling, and suffering today for a little treat of happiness tomorrow is the trap of being “normal.” We can't be normal if we want to get exceptional results! Imagine striving your whole life just to be normal, just to get to “average.” Our subconscious choices are controlled by our environment. For Larry and Anne, they needed to change their environment every 6 months until those less effective habits are broken! Two gifts from the SEALs: -Team: huge level of love, care, and support from teammates -An endless supply of the opportunity to be in a flow state Larry's challenge this week: Having a difficult, challenging, or even a conversation out of the norm with our wives can be super scary! A physical challenge for many of us is easy, so we're going about this challenge a bit differently today. Write down what it would FEEL like to have our ideal life today, not tomorrow. What would it FEEL like? What would it LOOK like? What's there? What's not there? Then, share how this ideal life feels and looks with your wife! Ask her what her ideal life today would FEEL and LOOK like to be aware of what the GAP between both might be. For many of us in relationships, there is often a GAP between the life we as fathers want to live and the dreams we want to achieve for our families and what our spouse might see as possible or be comfortable with. How many of us would want to bring our wives' vision for the ideal life closer to ours to positively impact our family and others? how many of us would want to close the gap so that making decisions together would be easier and more fun? If you find that there is a GAP, reach back out to Larry or to me to put you in touch with Larry. He has created an incredible set of tools to help anyone who doesn't want to be normal create the life you want for yourself, your connection with your spouse, your family and your impact in the world. For Larry, he would have confidence that they were on adventures as a family that enable them to learn as individuals and as a family while impacting the world in a measurable way. Today we have an awesome guest with a passion for the wild places of the earth, their protection, and exploring them (especially in kitted out offroad vehicles!). Scott Leuthold is a writer, speaker, and advocate for getting outdoors and re-discovering what Thoreau called “the divine music.” Scott challenges us to push the envelope of our comfort zone this week, and not in nature but internally. Be an adventurer and go inward! Tap into a hidden fear in your mind and sit in a quiet spot outside, flow with the breeze, and explore that dark place in your mind. Face that experience and tell yourself "that's not who I am, starting today. This experience no longer serves me, and I'm going to get beyond that!" Today on the show I'm giving you a more direct call to action. This week, tens of thousands of people are preparing to endure the wrath of Hurricane Florence, and a group of tens of thousands more are ready to deploy their skills to be the best part of their worst day and Get (Stuff) Done. Team Rubicon's primary mission is providing disaster relief to those affected by natural disasters, be they domestic or international. By pairing the skills and experiences of military veterans with first responders, medical professionals, and technology solutions, Team Rubicon aims to provide the greatest service and impact possible. Through continued service, Team Rubicon seeks to provide our veterans with three things they lose after leaving the military: a purpose, gained through disaster relief; community, built by serving with others; and identity, from recognizing the impact one individual can make. Coupled with leadership development and other opportunities, Team Rubicon looks to help veterans transition from military to civilian life. I'm a proud member of Team Rubicon Region V, and had the privilege of serving alongside my fellow tribe members in the wake of Hurricane Harvey in 2017. It was one of the most profoundly positive experiences of my life, and you can have that mix of adventure, purpose, and service too by signing up to deploy on their website. It only takes a few hours of training, and a little bit of gear and you're good to go.
