Over the last few years, there has been an ever-growing trend for personal branding portraits and headshots. These can be an awesome opportunity, but it's not uncommon to see photographers working way too hard and for way too many hours and not getting the financial benefits of that work. With this expanding segment of our industry, I wanted to bring in an expert who has successfully threaded the needle of supplying her clients with the imagery they need while making the process efficient and profitable for her business.  Kira Derryberry is a portrait photographer based in Tallahassee, FL. She is also the Vice President of the Professional Photographers of America (PPA). In this conversation with Kira, we talk about the very intentional steps she took towards profitability, sustainability, and profitability in the Personal Branding category of her business. There are so many great tips in this episode, no matter what type of photographer you are or what your business goals are, because she also shares software tips, workflow ideas, and exactly how she runs a session for these seemingly “boring” shoots. In this episode, you'll learn how to: Nail down a few looks that create confidence and efficiency. Schedule back-to-back headshots and branding shoots. Use Calendly for online booking and payment. Spend less time on the shoot and more time on the proofing. Create sustainability with headshots and personal branding images   Here's a glance at this episode: [2:43] - Welcome to the show, Kira! [4:25] - Personal branding images and headshots are the same thing in Kira's studio. [5:51] - The elaborate personal branding images are not beneficial and profitable for Kira. [7:32] - There is a difference between the influencer who wants natural looking lifestyle branding photos and the professional who wants headshots. [8:56] - Leaving the studio, especially in a metropolitan area, is costly and time consuming. [9:32] - If you do not have a studio as part of your business model, the influencer market may be something to consider. [11:15] - Business exposure is hard and doesn't always pan out. [12:23] - Shifting to only working within the studio was what Kira needed for sustainability. [14:01] - Kira describes a scenario where she stuck with her boundaries and the client made it work. [16:14] - Just because a client requests it, does not mean you have to accept the work. [18:47] - Kira describes the impact of nailing down a few “boring” looks in the studio that are asked for regularly. [20:21] - The “boring” and simple images need to have confident and comfortable clients. [21:35] - When a client is looking worried or isn't confident, Kira builds trust. [22:57] - Kira shoots tethered to her computer and a large screen television. [24:08] - Kira tries to spend as little time on the actual shooting as possible to spend more time on sorting through them with the clients. [25:01] - Kira and Allison both use Calendly for online booking. [26:17] - What happens when you need to break up the monotony? [27:12] - Composite work has become hot recently for Kira's business. [29:58] - There are retouching companies that can help with composite work. [32:08] - Wardrobe coaching or a recommendation list is helpful. [33:41] - The longer someone has to proof photos on their own, the more they will convince themselves they don't like it. [36:20] - Set up an entire day where you can bring in clients back to back for the same type of shoot. [37:24] - At Kira's studio, the session is fully paid for ahead of time through Calendly. [39:33] - This type of work has very little overhead and takes much less time than other types. There is no wrong client for headshots.   Links and Resources: Kira DerryberryWebsite | Instagram | PPA Do The ReWorkWebsite | Instagram Allison Tyler JonesWebsite | Instagram | LinkedIn

If you want to send nice portrait photographers into a tailspin, start talking about pricing their work. We'll chat all day about lighting and technique but when it comes to putting an actual value on what we do, ah, get ready for some serious pushback. “I could never charge that!” “I'll lose all my clients!”  And on it goes.   If any of that sounds uncomfortably familiar join me for today's episode where I'm joined by the Director of Education for the Professional Photographers of America (PPA), Angela Kurkian, a wedding and portrait photographer herself, who has worked with thousands of photographers through PPA to up-level their businesses.  Unfortunately, pricing is more often than not an awkward topic of conversation in our profession, and even more unfortunately, many portrait photographers hugely undervalue themselves.  But how to effect change?  Angela has an interesting take on recognizing the value of what we, as photographers, really  do for our clients  From understanding what you want, to creating unique customer journeys and being clear about your offerings, to taking the emotional element out of pricing, Angela has a wealth of knowledge to share, in her characteristic encouraging, kind, and honest way.  We'll discuss pricing from the inside out. From assigning value to your work to getting out of your head and getting into a profitable, sustainable business. This episode might just change the way you think about pricing your work.    Timestamps: [0:00:59] How to get portrait photographers excited, and how to scare them away. [0:01:18] An introduction to today's guest, Angela, and what we are going to be talking about today. [0:04:48] One of the main reasons that portrait photographers often don't charge what they should. [0:06:55] A mistake that Angela sees portrait photographers make with regard to pricing.   [0:07:28] The important realization that Angela after six years in business.  [0:08:14] What it means to really know what you want.   [0:10:55] Trends that Angela and I have noticed in the way some photographers price their portraits, and some reasons why. [0:13:53] The shift that occurs as soon as you start charging for your work.  [0:14:43] Angela explains what a Salesman Session Projection is, and the value of engaging in this process. [0:17:52] A meme I saw the other day which accurately captures the pricing element of portrait photography.  [0:18:22] The two camps that have formed in the realm of photography pricing.  [0:19:34] Steps that follow the Salesman Session Projection in the Business Challenge that Angela runs.  [0:20:06] PPA's highest cost of sales recommendation.  [0:21:24] A mental exercise which drives home the importance of pricing correctly. [0:24:09] Creating customer journeys; this is what you should focus on after you have had your pricing ‘aha' moment.  [0:26:02] What I have noticed about the photographers in the recent class I have run.  [0:26:49] A word on subjectivity and the danger of comparison.  [0:28:23] The surprising prices that people will pay for impersonal items.   [0:29:35] Don't sell from your own pocket.   [0:30:32] Why your marketing strategy should not focus on price. [0:33:13] A new way to think about money. [0:36:33] Angela's personal experiences which highlight why you need to be very clear about what you do.  [0:39:54] Continuous evolvement is essential to the journey of a portrait photographer. [0:41:37] How to handle your emotions and the emotions of your clients.  [0:44:31] An example of how I sell my value to my clients.  [0:45:45] Portrait photography is about the experience as much as it is about the final product on the canvas.  [0:47:55] Traits that Angela believes auger well for success.  [0:49:05] A TV and book series that Angela highly recommends.  [0:50:52] Why Angela advises photographers learn from outside the world of photography.   Links and Resources: Do The ReWork Do The ReWork on Instagram Angela KurkianWebsite | Professional Photographers of America | Instagram | LinkedIn

Due to the covid-19 virus, we decided to put together some suggestions of things and themes you can photograph while staying safe at home! Most of the recent photography news also involves the virus.  Adobe announces free at-home Creative Cloud service for students and educators impacted by the outbreak.  World Press has cancelled the 2020 Photo Contest Award show, Photokina is cancelled until 2022, Professional Photographers of America (PPA) has opened up their training website for free for 2 weeks (www.ppa.com/education-unlocked). Nikon and Canon have put off camera repairs. We want all our viewers to stay safe and healthy until the virus threat has passed.  We know many, just like us, are stranded at home and have had trips cancelled. So, we put together some suggestions that you can do in or around your home with your camera. Jim also has offered to give away his ebook on macro photography.  To get your FREE copy, just go to The Fotobug YouTube channel and subscribe. Marion Mass MD returns for Part 2 of our series on healthcare economics, and explores why health care costs are rising faster than college tuition. In this episode, Dr. Mass focuses on GPO's and PBM's. Everyone needs to know what these two acronyms mean, as they are responsible for adding $200 Billion to Americans' health care bills each year. Kickbacks are illegal in just about every industry except healthcare. GPO's and PBM's are integrating vertically and horizontally and most medicine and hospital equipment sold in the US goes through just a handful of GPO's and PBM's. 4 GPO's now control 90% of all the hospital and nursing home supplies and 3 PBM's control 85% of all prescription drugs. Marion Mass, MD, is a practicing physician, a patient advocate, and a founding member of the PPA (Practicing Physicians of America), explains the shocking and secretive world of Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBM's) and Group Puchasing Organizations (GPO's) and follows the money to uncover the truth behind rising health care costs. Dr. Mass is very active politically, and is the vice chair of Practicing Physicians of America (PPA), a non-profit group dedicated to improving the doctor-patient relationship through confronting laws and regulations that limits the ability of physicians to serve their patients. Last year, Dr. Mass co authored the Free2Care White paper which detailed how to improve access and lower costs to patients by reducing waste with specific legislative solutions.” You can read the paper here: http://free2care.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Free2care.pdf Dr. Mass is drawing attention to pg 41 (Appendix B) of the free2care.org white paper shown above. That is the bill Dr. Mass is asking everyone to share with their lawmaker to draw attention to the crisis and its simple solution. End legal kickbacks in the healthcare industry. America blames insurance companies, pharma and physicians for rising health care costs, but the reality is more complex and frightening. 74% of healthcare costs are attributed to 'Administrative Expenses'. By comparison registered nurses and doctors combined make up for 13%. Where is all this money going? Why is the cost of hospitalization rising faster than the cost of college tuition? Marion Mass, MD, is a practicing physician, a patient advocate, and a founding member of the PPA (Practicing Physicians of America), explains the shocking and secretive world of Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBM's) and Group Puchasing Organizations (GPO's) and follows the money to uncover the truth behind rising health care costs. The results can be surprising. In some instances buying medication out of pocket can cost less than the co-pay when purchased through your health insurance plan. How is that possible? Healthcare costs are rising and yet the quality of care is being eroded. Access to quality care is being denied at increasing rates and Americans are being squeezed. Big Pharma is vertically integrating and reducing patient choice and access in the process. The future of healthcare in America hangs in the balance. Did you know that kickbacks are legal in the pharmaceutical industry? And how does CVS make more money from its PBM business than from running its pharmacies? If you want to understand what is driving the cost of healthcare in the United States, and what this means for the future of healthcare in America, you owe it to yourself to listen to this episode. Some of the sites Dr. Mass mentions in the podcast: opensecrets.org - website containing information on healthcare cost related information goodRx - app that provides information on drug costs in your area, overlaid on a map free2care.org - a group working to change health care for the better by reducing cost through reducing waste Dr. Mass is very active politically, and is the vice chair of Practicing Physicians of America (PPA), a non-profit group dedicated to improving the doctor-patient relationship through confronting laws and regulations that limits the ability of physicians to serve their patients. Last year, Dr. Mass co authored the Free2Care White paper which detailed how to improve access and lower costs to patients by reducing waste with specific legislative solutions.” You can read the paper here: http://free2care.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Free2care.pdf You can learn more about Dr. Mass' efforts to challenge the status quo by visiting the sites below: Practicing Physicians of America, co-founder https://practicingphysician.org/ Facebook: @PPAofUSA Bucks County Health Improvement Partnership, board: https://www.bchip.org/ Bucks County Courier Times, Doylestown Intel, editorial Board: https://www.buckscountycouriertimes.com/

Today's episode on The PhotoTellers wins the distinction of "longest title ever." Why the long title? As I write each post, I try to give a teaser as to the content. This episode therefore wins not for its duration [shorter than many episodes], but because it encompasses a great deal of information. My guest is Lori Craft, current President of the Professional Photographers of America [PPA]. She enjoyed her first-ever trip to the Texas School of Professional Photography this year, and kindly joined me for a rich conversation. If the title doesn't tell you, here's what you can expect: What is the PPA & why is it the organization uniquely suited to help shape Copyright laws? How she and her husband have shifted their portrait business with the changing economy What is PPA doing in the world of drones? Why? In Lori's opinion, what is the #1 reason to participate in the PPA? See the work that Lori and her husband Dennis are creating HERE, and also find out more about the work of PPA HERE. Since my conversation with Lori at TX School, I interviewed David Trust, CEO of PPA about the Copyright protection initiative. That conversation gives more detailed, more recent information on that issue: http://firesidenetwork.com/creatives-the-defense-of-copyright-needs-you/ What's all the fuss about Texas School? The next generation of Copyright law hangs in the hands of Photographers, Illustrators, Graphic Designers, Copywriters, and other Creators. Congress is within weeks of seeing a bill that will allow Creatives to defend Copyright infringement. How significant is this legislation? As of this writing, it's virtually impossible to defend your work being stolen unless the damages exceed THIRTY THOUSAND DOLLARS. If this new legislation passes, Creatives will be able to recoup lost income from those who steal their work. The process directly applies to damages LESS than $30,000, will involve no lawyers, no court appearance, no travel. It's an entirely new way of defending Small Claims Copyright infringement, and it applies to the vast majority of Creatives. While the initiative has seen tremendous momentum, it still needs YOUR SUPPORT. It needs 4 minutes of your time. Right now, it actually only needs 30 seconds. David Trust, CEO of PPA In this episode of The PhotoTellers, I meet with David Trust, CEO of the Professional Photographers of America (PPA). David along with MANY others have been working for years to develop this piece of legislation. Tune in to this conversation to learn: Why it's critical that this legislation passes NOW How likely it is that we'll see it passed The high points of the bill How the Small Claims process would work Why it will actually only require 4 minutes--total--of your time (and that's a high estimate) If you make a living as a Creative, a family member does, or you care about the ability for Creators to protect their work, I'm asking you to do 2 things: Share this link with like-minded people (including your family). Tell them why you're sending it. Log on immediately to PPA.COM/GRASSROOTS to add your name to the list of people willing to help. If you have questions/concerns, leave a comment in the section below and I'll be sure to forward them on to PPA. And if you missed last year's conversation with David Trust, he discusses the state of the Photographic Industry. Find it HERE.

"It's impossible to make a living as a Professional Photographer!" "People don't value our work anymore!" "Newcomers into the industry are killing our chance to make a living!" Do any of these sound familiar? David Trust, CEO of the Professional Photographers of America (PPA) joins The PhotoTellers to discuss the state of Professional Photography in America. Here is what you'll hear . . . while you're here: What is the future of professional photography in America? Are things as bad as people are saying? Is copyright really in jeopardy? What's going on in Congress & the possibility of changing copyright law? What are the biggest issues facing professional photographers? What is the biggest business mistake photographers make? OH! But that's not all! We also explore: The availability of "malpractice" insurance for a Photographer. The lifespan of a low-priced Photographer entering the market today. How to speak to potential clients so that they'll be willing to share some of their "pot of money" with you. How to move from a "photographer hired to do a job" to "MY family photographer!" Two places where you can learn more about the work of PPA, and if a membership to PPA is good for you: I reference a conversation with Michael Timmons. This is where he explains the value of PPA to Photographers. Check out PPA's website HERE. At the end of the conversation, you'll hear David and me discuss a few favorite books.
