On this episode I chatted with Master Photographer and artist Heather Beadles about her unique business. Heather started her journey to portraiture long before she picked up a camera. Being the fourth generation Oklahoman to grow up on her family's 1889 Land Run Farm, family legacy is a integral part of her heritage. With a passion to encourage marriages and families, she studied Family Relations and Child Development at Oklahoma State University. After receiving a Master's Degree in Counseling she went on to become a Licensed Professional Counselor. It was about that time that she was given her first “real” camera and the love of capturing faces and stories was born. For over 15 years Heather has been honing her artistic skills in composition, posing, lighting and color harmony. Over time her portraits have evolved from photographs into hand-painted portrait art. By blending the crafts of photography and brush painting, subjects are no longer stuck with an artist's “interpretation” of how they look, and as a result her embellished mixed media portrait paintings have become highly desired by her clients. https://www.beadlesportraits.com/ Huge thank you to our sponsors. Discovering Grayslake: Unveiling the Stories and People That Make Our Town Unique
Kristin Cashmore is the owner of Bella Vie Studio in Grayslake. She is highly involved in our community and I can't wait for you to learn more about her. Hey there! So you want to know a little bit about me...... I stumbled into the photography world 30 years ago when I took a job at a local photography studio shortly after graduating college. I knew nothing about photography but I had a strong desire to learn and a amazing mentor who was willing to teach me. In my beginning years at the studio, I learned so much and after a lot of hard work, I was able to receive the designation of Certified Professional Photographer from PPA (Professional Photographers of America). A few years later I achieved the designation of Master Photographer by entering my work into print competitions and studying with the best. Eventually I left the studio to start my own business and in 2008, Bella Vie Studio was born! My studio is in downtown Grayslake and I love being connected with many other small business owners who have quickly become friends. I also live in Grayslake with my husband, our three kiddos and our crazy puppies! What I love most about being a photographer is that I get to capture life as it happens. My sessions are very relaxed - we talk and play and have fun! Whether I'm being silly with preschoolers, talking with a high school Senior about the excitement college or celebrating with a newly married couple on their wedding day, I get the privilege of capturing moments in time - moments that will be relived and shared with future generations. And for that I am so blessed and honored!

On this episode of The Beginner Photography Podcast, we dive into the dangers of needing to be a master photographer when starting out. Focusing solely on the negatives of your work and the positives of others' work can lead to a feeling of inadequacy and discourage you from progress. The Photography Manifesto, a ten-part series by the host Raymond Hatfield, aims to provide useful information for becoming a better photographer instead of gimmicky tips and tricks. I discuss the challenges of becoming a master photographer and how it can be difficult to achieve. However, through consistency, accuracy, and focusing on getting the shot in focus, you can improve your skills and achieve mastery in smaller steps. Finally, we discuss my lawn care journey and how it relates to the lessons learned in photography. Welcome to Mind Your Own Business, the podcast that helps photographers improve their business and their lives! This month we chat with photographer Lori Nordstrom. In our discussion, Lori shares how she grew her business stronger than ever during the pandemic, and how she continues to grow it. She discusses great ways to stay in touch with your clients, why it's vital to understand your clients, and why we should all be serving our clients. Get ready to be inspired! Lori is a Certified Professional Photographer, an accredited Master Photographer and Photographic Craftsman, and is a member of Professional Photographers of America. She began in photography like many do… photographing her kids! She loved shooting in black and white as often as she could, and soon began experimenting with different papers and mediums for hand-painting the black and white images. She fell in love with this style, and it's still something she's known for today, over 20 years later. You can check out portfolio her website here. About your hosts Skip Cohen is president and founder of SkipCohenUniversity.com, founder of Marketing Essentials International and past president of Rangefinder Publishing and WPPI. He's been an active participant in the professional side of photography since joining Hasselblad USA in 1987 as president. He has co-authored six books on photography and actively supports dozens of projects each year involving photographic education. Chamira Young loves helping fellow photographers improve their businesses via the Pro Photographer Journey Podcast. You can also find her photography portfolio at ChamiraStudios.com and her art at ArtbyChamira.com. She will readily admit it: She's an art nerd and photographer with an obsession for creativity and productivity!
“If you can truly be curious, listen to them, ask questions and then you will get information from them so that you can deliver something. Curiosity leads to a place of empathy where then you can truly understand them and then you have the courage to act upon it.”Today, our hostess and Mastercraftsman Photographer Luci Dumas sits down with returning guest Bryan Welsh, a Master Photographer with 43 years of experience under his belt (between generations). He is a sought-after speaker whose mission is to create impact through creativity and storytelling. Our conversation focuses on Bryan's takeaways from the book Exactly What to Say by Phil M. Jones regarding how photographers can improve their communication skills in order to ask great questions, which in turn lead to great conversations. Furthermore, he reveals the crucial difference between selling and professional selling.Listen in as Bryan speaks on the four cornerstones to professional selling: 1) The worst time to figure out what to say is when you need to say it. 2) Curiosity is the fuel. 3) People make decisions for their own reasons, not for yours. 4) The person asking the questions controls the conversation.Key Topics:Positive and negative changes in the industry over the past four decades (4:48)The first cornerstone (10:32)The second cornerstone (16:35)The third cornerstone (26:53)The fourth cornerstone (34:27)Overcoming the fear of trying to “convince” people (45:10)Bryan's upcoming workshops (47:12)The power of “Just imagine” (50:28)Luci's wrap-up (56:06)Resources:BIG NEWS: Bryan will be teaching a day long class in Luci's studio in San Diego in September, 2022.
