    Dr. Ahmed Raslan, a board-certified neurosurgeon, discusses treatment options for people suffering from epilepsy. There are a number of different treatment options available for people with epilepsy, with the most common being medication. In some cases, surgery may be an option where surgery can be used to remove the part of the brain that is causing the seizures. Dr. Raslan also discusses the risks and benefits associated with different types of epilepsy surgeries. Other possible treatments for epilepsy include: Ketogenic diet Vagal nerve stimulation Deep brain stimulation Dr. Raslan is a professor of neurological surgery, managing patients with a range of neurosurgical disorders. His practice focuses on epilepsy surgery; brain mapping for tumors and epilepsy, which often involves awake craniotomy; surgery for chronic and cancer pain (trigeminal neuralgia, spinal pain and many other chronic pain syndromes); hydrocephalus; and movement disorders.Dr. Raslan's research focuses on cerebral cortical physiology and cognitive decoding. He is particularly focused on developing and testing newer high-resolution neural biointerfaces for the brain and spinal cord and decoding cognitive processes such as memory encoding, language and number cognition. Additionally, he studies nociception (pain detection) and pain modulation, pathophysiology of trigeminal neuralgia, outcomes of functional neurosurgery, functional localization using intraoperative and extraoperative mapping, surgical education and operative efficiency.

Dr. Alaa Abd-Elsayed joined the faculty of the Anesthesiology Department at the University of Wisconsin in 2014 to provide Chronic Pain Medicine Services as part of the Interventional Pain Program. He received his medical training at Assiut University Medical School in Egypt, completed a master's degree in Public Health, research fellowship at Cleveland Clinic, and residency in anesthesiology and pain management fellowship at University of Cincinnati. As part of the Interventional Pain Program, Dr. Abd-Elsayed evaluates patients at the Pain Clinic, and when an interventional pain treatment is appropriate, performs procedures at the Madison Surgery Center. In addition to his work as a pain specialist, Dr. Abd-Elsayed is an active clinical investigator. Current studies include the use of opioids, genetic variations leading to different individual response to opioids, and the use of neuromodulation and peripheral nerve stimulators for the management of neuropathic pain. He also has research interests in fibromyalgia, complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) and headaches, and is leading a study called "CREATE" to help CRPS patients. Over the course of his career, he has received numerous research grants, published more than 200 peer-reviewed manuscripts and authored several editorials and book chapters. He has presented at more than 60 international and national conferences and has earned more than 15 awards at the state and national levels. In addition, he has served as a reviewer for more than 20 journals and as an editor to several journals. "Dr. Al," as he likes to be called, is a member of the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians (ASIPP) and the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine (ASRA). He was named among the Leading Physicians of the World and America's Best Physicians in 2016.

Dr. Monica Verduzco-Gutierrez is an accomplished academic Physiatrist and Professor and Chair of the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at the Long School of Medicine at UT Health San Antonio. She previously was the Medical Director of the Brain Injury and Stroke Program at TIRR Memorial Hermann Hospital, a top four US News and World Report Best Hospital for Rehabilitation. Dr. Gutierrez grew up in South Texas, then moved to Houston where she earned her undergraduate degree at Rice University, her medical degree at Baylor College of Medicine, and completed her PM&R residency training at the Baylor College of Medicine-UT Houston Rehabilitation Alliance. She excitedly moved to San Antonio to lead the distinguished Department of Rehabilitation Medicine in 2020. Her area of clinical expertise is the care of patients with traumatic brain injury, stroke rehabilitation, and interventional spasticity management. Dr. Gutierrez is a passionate advocate for Physiatry and for underrepresented groups in medicine via social media channels. She is the Social Media Editor of the American Journal of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
