One of the winners of this year's World Press Awards spoke to FRANCE 24 about how it feels to be recognised, and how important it is for photojournalists to continue carrying out their work. The awards are given out to those who have worked in some of the world's hotspots like Gaza and Ukraine, but also to some of those who have taken pictures telling lesser-known stories around the world. Lee-Ann Olwage's award-winning picture shows a grandfather, who has Alzheimer's disease, with his granddaughter. Little is known about dementia in Madagascar, where those who are diagnosed with the illness are often stigmatised.
World Press Freedom Canada, a non-profit that advocates for freedom of the press, recently awarded its local journalism certificate of merit to LighthouseNOW reporter Keith Corcoran for his 'dogged' pursuit of search warrant records in the Nova Scotia courts.

Investigative reporter Dana Priest speaks with Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) and journalists from TV Rain, which was the last independent media outlet in Russia, about the state of press freedom around the world, the challenges of today's information landscape and the critical role of journalists in chronicling the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Hong Kong has plummeted to 148th place in Reporters Without Borders' annual index on press freedom, a drop of nearly 70 places in a single year. The sharp descent is the result of new national security legislation imposed in 2020 and the revival of colonial-era anti-sedition laws dating back to the 1930s. The Chinese territory now ranks just below the Philippines and Sri Lanka, and slightly above Turkey and India. Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam says that Hong Kong's press freedom was as vibrant as ever citing the large number of regional and international institutions operating in Hong Kong alongside local media.

Due to the covid-19 virus, we decided to put together some suggestions of things and themes you can photograph while staying safe at home! Most of the recent photography news also involves the virus. Adobe announces free at-home Creative Cloud service for students and educators impacted by the outbreak. World Press has cancelled the 2020 Photo Contest Award show, Photokina is cancelled until 2022, Professional Photographers of America (PPA) has opened up their training website for free for 2 weeks (www.ppa.com/education-unlocked). Nikon and Canon have put off camera repairs. We want all our viewers to stay safe and healthy until the virus threat has passed. We know many, just like us, are stranded at home and have had trips cancelled. So, we put together some suggestions that you can do in or around your home with your camera. Jim also has offered to give away his ebook on macro photography. To get your FREE copy, just go to The Fotobug YouTube channel and subscribe. Then simply write to jim@thefotobug.com or leave a comment on the Stay at Home video and he will send you a link to download your copy!

Magnum legend Chris Steele-Perkins was born in Burma in 1947 to a Burmese mother and an English father, who brought him back to England when he was 2 years old. He published his first photobook The Teds in 1979 and shortly after that joined Magnum photos after an invitation to apply from none other than Josef Koudelka. He subsequently travelled all over the world, covering many of the major global conflicts of the 80’s and 90’s in between working extensively in his home country, and producing a number of books of that work, along with those from Afghanistan and later from his wife’s native country of Japan. He has won, to name but a few awards, The Oscar Barnack Prize, The Robert Capa Gold Medal and a number of World Press awards, and all that despite the fact that he doesn’t really consider himself to be a photojournalist.

Kalpesh Lathigra was born and bred in London, England. He studied photojournalism at the London College of Printing (now the London College of Communication), before being awarded what was then a much sought-after traineeship with the Independent Newspaper, which at that time was renowned for a commitment to using excellent photography in a way that many national newspapers in the UK never really had in the past. Kalpesh went on to have a successful freelance career as a newspaper and magazine photograper, shooting features and portraits for most of the major British broadsheets and their weekend magazines and in 2000 he won a first prize (Arts, Singles) in the World Press Awards. A few years later he was awarded the W. Eugene Smith Fellowship for his long-term project about the lives of widows in India: Brides of Krishna. He is still a busy, jobbing editorial photographer, but, alongside that role, he has also developed his own personal practice in which he has attempted to straddle the invisible divide between editorial, documentary photographer and a more authored, artistic sensibility - a state of affairs that we spend much of the interview mulling over. His first book, 'Lost In The Wilderness', which he funded with a Kickstarter campaign, will be published later this Autumn and is the result of 5 years work documenting the native American Lakota Sioux community of the Pine Ridge reservation in South Dakota, USA. (Check links below for updates.) In Episode 005 Kalpesh discusses: Use of the label 'artist'; book project - 'Lost In The Wilderness'; why working is good for the soul; a friendship with Ralph Fiennes; changing his approach to the story; the fight against cliche, the World Press controversy and he danger of cliques
