On today's episode we chat with our pals, the very smart and very funny Amy Choi and Rebecca Lehrer. Amy and Rebecca are the dynamic duo behind Mash-Up Americans, a creative studio that helps their clients understand and connect to the dynamic, diverse, modern American audience. They reveal and re-center stories on the voices of the future — the voices you don't hear enough today. Important note here, when I started working on the initial idea of this podcast four years ago, they were the first people I called. They have successfully launched a variety of successful shows and were so kind to share their knowledge with me.They recently launched Grief, Collected and Love & Noraebang - two of my favorite podcasts right now.>> Grief, Collected www.griefcollected.comGrief is both a deeply individual and collective experience. In the arc of this show they pursue an expansion of our understanding of the many dimensions of grief, as an experience of our bodies, to our communities, to our governments, to our cultures. They are pursuing the answer to a fundamental question: Can we change the shape of our future, by processing our past?>> Love & Noraebangloveandnoraebang.comA fun romantic comedy podcast set in contemporary Los Angeles - It's kinda an homage to K Drama and Telenovela – familiar tropes like business enemies thwarting love, secondary love interests, long distance drama, companies worried they're being taken advantage of for their money. But in the end it's all about two people falling in love in LA in 2022. BTW, Love & Noraebang was nominated for an iheart Radio - Podcast of the Year!!Be sure to follow Mash-Up Americans on Instagram and check out their newsletter - it's the best!THE SMITH SOCIETY is a podcast featuring storytellers. Amy Choi and Rebecca Lehrer are used to exploring complexities. As hosts of the podcast The Mash-up Americans, they cover all sorts of complex intersections of identity and culture. In this episode of Here After, they join me to talk about Mashup Americans' newest series, Grief, Collected. In this episode we cover: Amy's brilliant grief avoidance/childbirth analogy & what we need in order to come out of our dark little nests into the light of grief The real nuance in whether most people are over the “acute phase” of grief after one year Will listening to “Ripple” by the Grateful Dead elicit grief bursts from everyone, or is it just us? Why NOT grieving was the right move for people fleeing wars and political unrest What Amy and Rebecca learned - about grief, about American culture, and about themselves - in producing their show, Grief, Collected (spoiler: they learned a lot!) Why telling the truth about grief - without trying to resolve it - is the best hope we have for the future Content note: mention of pregnancy and childbirth Notable quotes: “One of those bummers is you can't exercise once, and then you're done exercising. It's like - it f*cking sucks that you just have to keep doing it. And I think that's the thing with grief - you can't mourn something once and then be like, okay, well, now, I'm done with the grief portion of my life.” - Rebecca Lehrer “NOT grieving is actually a survival strategy.” - Amy Choi About our guests: Amy Choi is co-founder and editorial director of The Mash-Up Americans. Many people think influencers are only used for top-of-funnel, brand awareness campaigns. Amy Choi, Head of Brand Partnerships at ShopStyle, discusses how influencers can drive sales through affiliate programs.
One of the core tenets of Educated Guess is "Accessibility". For us, this means that people (at any age) should have the opportunity to shadow and learn as much as possible about a career they are interested in. And, ultimately, we believe that this mode of thinking will lead to more "pluralists" in today's society. The term "pluralist" for us has gotten a bad rap over the years. Unfortunately, having more than one interest can be a slippery slope towards being perceived as a "jack of all trades". However, even if our interests, skills, and background tend to look more like a paper machete, we find it incredibly powerful to acknowledge this as a good thing instead of a setback. That said, for this episode, we're joined by Amy Choi someone who has a pulse on the power of being multifaceted. A few years ago, Amy Choi and Rebecca Lehrer founded MashUp Americans where they produce The Mash-Up Americans podcast and curate stories in a weekly newsletter. While seemingly operating under a normal blog to business model, what makes Amy and Rebecca unique is their ability to focus especially on the grey area (Mash-Up) between culturally relevant stories. And, with a background in journalism, they now help select clients create and distribute content that speaks to "Mash-Up America" in an authentic, meaningful way. You can learn more about our client work here. So, about an hour, we spend time walking through the following questions and topics: "The Tanning of America" Finding a Business Model as a Journalist Pharrell's concept of being a pluralist The hidden risks of not seeing color If you want to checkout more work from Mash Up America, you can visit them here: http://www.mashupamericans.com/ https://www.facebook.com/mashupamericans https://twitter.com/mashupamerican
In this bonus crossover episode Tawny & Andrew are joined by Mash Up Americans host Amy Choi & Rebeca Lehrer to answer if doing an accent is racist, how to combat erasing your identify, and if "African-American" is in deed racist. Afterward, Amy & Rebecca share a clip from the Mash Up Americans interview with Fatimah Asghar.
Recentering conversations is more than shining a spotlight on voices that are often marginalized. It’s also letting those voices tell their own stories. With Rebecca Lehrer and Amy Choi of The Mash-Up Americans and Hello Sunshine, and Keisha “TK” Dutes, independent producer and co-host of TK in the AM. Hosted by Tanzina Vega, Werk It: The Podcast is the ICYMI version of the live event. You don’t see many Asian leads in Western cinema, that’s why The Joy Luck Club’s all-Asian cast was so radical. Its portrayal of complicated mother-daughter relationships and the immigrant experience spoke to Amy Choi as a child — and again as a mother.
