Andrew Dana is the Founder and Co-owner of Timber Pizza Company and Call Your Mother Deli. He started both successful restaurant concepts in Washington, D.C., establishing them as local favorites known for their high-quality and creative food offerings. Prior to launching his two restaurant brands, Andrew served as the Director of Business Development at Everfi, a company that powers social impact through education. He prides himself on being a new dad, a Washington D.C. native, and an encyclopedia of carbohydrate knowledge. In this episode… Opening just one successful restaurant takes passion, persistence, and a focus on creating an unforgettable customer experience. But what are the primary factors in building a whole brand of thriving restaurants? According to Andrew Dana, Co-owner and Founder of Call Your Mother Deli and Timber Pizza Co., the key to building a successful restaurant brand involves a few core elements. First, it's crucial to have a deep passion for the product — developing a unique, high-quality menu item through trial-and-error and a focus on quality ingredients is vital. However, Andrew emphasizes that the experience is just as important as the food itself — creating a fun, memorable atmosphere through factors like music, ambiance, and exceptional customer service. At the heart of Andrew's approach is cultivating a vibrant, engaged work culture. He prioritizes hiring people who will have fun and enjoy coming to work every day, offering them perks like gym memberships, language classes, and opportunities for career growth to incentivize his team and show they are valued. On this episode of the Top Business Leaders Show, Andrew Dana, Co-owner and Founder of Call Your Mother Deli and Timber Pizza Co., chats with Rise25's Chad Franzen about keys to building successful restaurant brands. Andrew shares his passion for carbohydrates and how it inspired his pizza concept. He explains how starting with a mobile pizza oven allowed him to learn the business before opening his first brick-and-mortar location, and emphasizes the importance of creating a memorable customer experience.
This year of cascading disasters is a good reminder that climate change has arrived, and some impacts are here to stay even after we reach net-zero. Is climate repair an opportunity to get back to a place of relative safety for humanity? Or is it just another delay tactic? On today's episode we dig into the debate on climate repair with Andrew Dana Hudson. Andrew is a sustainability researcher and a speculative fiction writer who has written Our Shared Storm, a novel imagining five possible realities of our climate future. Andrew explains what climate repair is and the role that technologies like direct air capture can play even after we transition off of fossil fuels. We also talked about speculative fiction and its role in confronting climate change in our collective imagination. Andrew Dana, Call Your Mother Bagel Deli Owners chef Daniela Moreira and Chief Doughboi, Andrew Dana, began this wild and wonderful journey at farmer's markets in DC. After opening our flagship shop in Park View in the Fall of 2018, it was clear that folks in our community needed MORE CARBS! Since then, we've assembled a dream team and opened up several new locations throughout DC, Maryland and alllll the way across the country in Denver, Colorado! We're on a mission to spread #bagellove to everyone with an appetite and our next stop might be your back yard (figuratively speaking)! We don't take ourselves too seriously, but we're serious about bagels. With a *chef's kiss* of honey, they're somewhere between a classic NY-style bagel and the sweeter, Montreal-style bagels from our friends up North. Andrew is Jewish; the nostalgia of family traditions and the eclectic food from their childhoods were the genesis of our menu. Food is important, but people are the most important ingredient. In addition to being a phenomenal place to eat, we aim to be great neighbors and one of the best places to work! Some of our longtime partners include: Urban Alliance to offer career training to area youth, AYUDA to help transform the lives of underserved immigrants, Food Rescue and Martha's Table to do our part to end hunger in DC. We're committed to making a positive impact in our community and using our platform to raise money and awareness for causes we care deeply about. www.callyourmotherdeli.com @callyourmotherdeli @AndrewDanaDC. . . . For over a decade, I ran my restaurants the way I was taught to run other people's restaurants. I led my teams the way others had led me and I never questioned it. But what if you never got that education? Andrew Dana owns more than half a dozen successful restaurants and he began his journey as a restaurateur with absolutely no operational experience. He just did what he thought was right and followed his gut instincts. Today we go through how an industry outsider is challenging the way we look at our restaurants and our industry. Andrew is D.C.'s king of carbs + chief dough boi, and is the founder and co-owner of multiple award-winning restaurants, Timber Pizza Co., Turus Pizza, and Call Your Mother (a Jew-ish deli). In 2010 he left D.C. to attend business school at Fordham University, where studying and researching NY-style slices culminated into his capstone project: creating a pizza shop. Andrew opened Timber Pizza in Petworth in June of 2016. Andrew's first concept has received national acclaim and multiple awards, including being named a 2019 Michelin Guide Bib Gourmand award-winner. Two years later, Call Your Mother Jew-ish deli was born. Inspired in part by Andrew's Jew-ish background and a dream to open a deli, the wood-fired shop infuses Jewish influence while flipping traditional deli staples on their head. Call your mother has received national recognition from the likes of the Washington Post and was recently named one of Eater's Best New Restaurants in America. Andrew is inspired by the unique neighborhoods that make up D.C. and his restaurants are a reflection of the communities he's grown to love. Andrew continues to be motivated by the desire to create authentic, yet unexpected concepts, menus, and spaces that, of course, pay homage to his love of carbs. “Ever consider killing yourself?” the gecko said. “It’ll save you one hundred percent on your car insurance.” I was alone, but not. I tried to step on the creature, but my foot wasn’t there. I clenched my teeth, which felt like water. Alleyah’s Southie accent crackled a reminder of radio. “Tracey, are you paralucid yet? Need another poke of DMT?” I was back in high school---or somebody’s high school. The classrooms were vintage Sears catalogs and a spruce tree that grew sideways---not in a directional sense but just with a profound association with the concept of sideways. Andrew Dana is the founder of Timber Pizza. Most of us have had that conversation with friends talking about how you should just quit your jobs and open a bar, deli, or a pizza place but it always ends there. Well, Andrew actually did just that. He started down the typical path and was working at a tech company after business school, but always had the dream of opening his own pizza restaurant on his mind. Andrew started the business while still working his corporate job, and has grown Timber Pizza to the point of making Bon Appetite Magazine’s Top 50 restaurants to open in 2016. On Today’s Episode, Andrew and I discuss: The key moments that led Andrew to leave the rat race and go out on his own Early days of the company and the hustle that went along with it Biggest lessons learned from first starting to where Andrew is today And much more… Subscribe: iTunes | Stitcher Visit https://www.ubpath.com/ for a full breakdown and my 3 big Takeaways Website: http://www.timberpizza.com/ You can find Timber Pizza at: Twitter: @TimberPizzaCo Instagram: timberpizzaco Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/timberpizza/ Sean's Twitter: @seansechrist_ Sponsor: Bighorn Apparel Drawing inspiration from their Denver, Colorado hometown, Bighorn owns the line between everyday urban style and the tough, mountain look.
