"Scammers rely on emotion. If they can catch you in that half second of panic, then they might be able to get you to do something." 41% of American adults have lost money to scams. And that's only those who reported it. Our hosts, Stephanie McCullough and Kevin Gaines, are back to talk all about money scams because the problem keeps growing, and because the scammers, as Kevin puts it, keep learning. The core mechanism hasn't changed either. Scams are all about manufactured panic. Whether it's a Social Security alert, a fake IRS demand, or a "computer security team" that called out of nowhere to say you've been hacked, the goal is to knock your skepticism offline before it fires. According to behavioral science, acute panic literally impairs the higher-order reasoning you'd need to catch the trick. The antidote is AARP's three-step model: pause, reflect, protect. The research behind it illustrates that awareness of a specific scam makes you 80% less likely to fall for it. Their free Fraud Watch Network sends alerts several times a month, and Stephanie suggests that even skimming the subject lines is protective. As Kevin likes to say, "Always independently verify." If someone sends you a phone number to call, that number is already suspect. The best long-term defense isn't paranoia but connection. Sigi (Yes, like the yogurt...) is a bicoastal and bilingual Swiss-Israeli-American triple citizen. (Did you follow?) You almost saw her on Unprisoned, This Is Us, Henry Danger, and Jessie, but those roles ended up on the cutting room floor. You can, however, still catch her on Call Your Mother, Girl Meets World, The Middle, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, and the hit Apple+ series Lessons in Chemistry. Sigi has created lots of digital content and won Best Actress for her film Optimistic Realist at the Portland Comedy Film Festival for playing an aspiring actress slash Hebrew school teacher. He also was the director of photography on Throw Momma from the Train, Big, When Harry Met Sally, and Misery.   Dennis is joined via Zoom by actor-singer-writer-restaurantuer Mitchell Anderson to discuss his new autobiographical play You Better Call Your Mother, which takes its title from something a producer said to him backstage after he came out publicly onstage at the 1996 GLAAD Media Awards. This was while he was playing a gay character on the hit TV series Party of Five and made Mitchell one of the first--if not the first--leading man types to come out as gay. It was a huge deal and Mitchell talks about what led him to make that decision, the phone call he made to his mother afterward and the personal and professional fallout from the decision. We dive deep into her childhood growing up in concert dance and her career trajectory as she explores the dualities of working as a dancer and actress both on and off the screen. She talks about how she is now transferring those skills over to film-writing and how she is working hard to create films and content that speaks on Latinx experiences that go far beyond the typical narco/criminal, cleaning lady or overly sexualized Latina that is usually found on the big screen. Coming from Cuban and Nicaraguan roots, Emma speaks on the importance of giving back to our community in ways that are not so "stereotypical" and "problematic" but instead shed light and celebrate the beauty of our multi-cultural lives as Latinx-identifying individuals. She studied English and communications at the University of Pennsylvania, went to graduate school for international relations at the London School of Economics, and got her J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Law School. She is a retired attorney and past New York bureau chief for Israel's largest English-language newspaper, The Jerusalem Post. She's mother to six children aged 7-18, and has the not-insubstantial undereye bags to prove it.
