[00:01:28] Devin Ulibarri introduces Music Blocks. It's a visual programming language for music developed in collaboration with Sugar Labs, a non-profit organization promoting free software for education. Music Blocks combines music and computation, allowing users to explore both musical and computational concepts. [00:02:26] Devin explains how it got started. He was interested in free software in education and attended a talk by Walter Bender, co-founder of Sugar Labs. They collaborated to create Music Blocks. [00:03:43] There are more than 150 contributors to the Music Blocks project, and Japan has shown interest in using it in their national elementary school curriculum for teaching programming. [00:04:21] Devin explains how you can use different instruments or even record a sample of a sound to create an instrument. [00:05:14] Devin talks about being a musician and started a job at the Free Software Foundation last year, having played a significant role in incorporating Sugar Labs. [00:06:20] Sugar Labs is used across the world and it's impossible to really know with the nature of the software. However, there isn't nearly enough people operating it in the U.S. [00:08:23] Music Blocks is seen as an instrument, and the team focuses on reaching a critical mass of users to create a culture that promotes active learning and creativity. [00:09:16] The main challenge is educating the public about Music Blocks and providing teachers with the necessary tools and materials to integrate it into classrooms effectively. Also. there needs to be a culture with it. [00:10:15] There's Music Blocks for musicians and music educators. It offers a creative approach to music composition and exploration of musical concepts from the very beginning, which can be beneficial for music education. [00:11:15] They use an active approach to technology rather than passive. They hire students from music colleges to teach the kids via Music Blocks. [00:13:39] Music Blocks allows students to explore musical concepts and start composing music from the very beginning, promoting a more active and engaging learning experience. I'm proud to introduce you to Michael, a former gang member who turned his life around, and now helps others do the same. His story of redemption is powerful and needs to be shared with the world. He talks about his rough childhood and growing up in a gang-dominated neighborhood, where the only way he had of obtaining respect was through the use of violence and getting imprisoned. He didn't know any other way, and this is how he lived throughout his youth, getting in and out of jail while dealing with the trauma that was inflicted upon him from a young age. While he fought his demons and struggled to find a place for himself in the world, he knew he had to change his ways. He decided to take action and find help in the form of rehabilitation and therapy. Michael never gave up and kept going, one day at a time. With faith and the help of his therapist, he was determined to make himself a better person. Now in his 40s, he has found his purpose in life and uses his platform as a former gang member and prisoner to create a change in the lives of others. He became a social entrepreneur and the founder of Access 2 Excellence, a program that helps formerly incarcerated people reintegrate into society and provides them with education. Michael has broken free from the chains of his troubled past and is now motivating others to do the same. His story proves that there's hope for everyone. It'll inspire you to believe in yourself, to keep fighting for what you want, and to trust that there is always a light at the end of the tunnel. Included in this conversation: How living in a gang environment impacted his childhood Growing up without a positive male role model How his strong mother influenced him When he was first introduced to gang activity A realistic glimpse of gang life Anecdotes of his time as a gang member The reason he was incarcerated for the first time What it was like to be in prison for most of his youth What really happens inside prison The lowest point in his life The moment his path to redemption started What he did when he got out of prison for the last time Helping ex-prisoners with "Acess 2 Excellence" and "Justice "Reform" How he has positively transformed other people's lives His experience with psychedelic therapy Overcoming his anger and traumas A bit about his love life His purpose in life Reach out to Michael on Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/michael.ulibarri.9465 Find Michael on LinkedIn here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/michael-ulibarri-754454160/ Follow me on social media here: Instagram @theprev www.instagram.com/theprev/ Facebook @wakeupcallthepodcast www.facebook.com/wakeupcallthepodcast Twitter @ThePrevite twitter.com/theprevite You can also watch episodes of Wake Up Call on YouTube: www.youtube.com/channel/UCjlkBJChmRfcu4l-kLs2Rwg If you think you would be an awesome guest on Wake Up Call, DM me on Instagram!

Welcome to another incredible episode titled: “When fathers are absent (Michael's prison experience)”.This super intriguing and inspiring episode was born from the desire to see a more productive, physically, socially and emotionally available fathers. When fathers are closely involved in the wherewithal of their childrens emotional, educational, psychological and behavioral life, the child would have a more balanced life; unlik, when fathers are not emotionally available. This without mixing words is the engine driving most crucial social problems including crimes, all forms of vices, ilicit behaviors, adolescent pregnancy and sexual abuse of children. Sadly, fatherlessness is a problem that is frequently ignored. In this episode, Michael shared his prison experience having served over 12 years in both federal and state prison. In his exact words: “children who grow up with the presence of an engaged, caring and loving father are less likely to go to prison and join gangs".This episode is a must listen. Connect with on Facebook at Michael Ulibarri Contact and connect with us at: www.opod.one/thebeautifullybrokenme

Good Morning, Colorado, you're listening to the Daily Sun-Up with the Colorado Sun. It's Thursday July 29th.   Today - The pandemic and stay-at-home orders led to new consumption habits. Many people began drinking more beer, seltzer, and other canned drinks - and those habits have persisted. But now, it's led to a shortage of aluminum cans and lids.   We'd also like to take a moment to thank our sponsors at SunShare. SunShare is building a new community solar garden and YOU can participate! Your community solar subscription adds solar to the energy mix, and your utility buys that energy directly from you! So join the thousands of other Coloradans who share your commitment to clean energy. Space is limited and filling quickly, so make sure to visit us at mysunshare.com   But before we begin, let's go back in time with some Colorado history adapted from historian Derek R Everett's book “Colorado Day by Day”:   Today, we take you back to July 29th, 1706 when a party of 140 Spaniards, Puebloans and Apaches under General Juan de Ulibarri reached the south bank of the Arkansas River in present-day Prowers. They had trekked for 2 and a half weeks from Santa Fe. Ulibarri praised the area as the best and broadest valley. The expedition proved a success in strengthening the ties between the Spanish, Puebloans, and Apaches.   Now, our feature story.   The coronavirus pandemic and mandatory stay-at-home orders created a lot of new consumption habits and economic forces that have persisted in 2021. That's certainly the case with the canning industry, as high consumption of beverages like beer and seltzer have driven a shortage of aluminum cans and jar lids that a lot of Colorado businesses rely on to get their products to consumers. Colorado Sun reporter Jen Brown talks to reporter Shannon Najmabadi about what's behind shortages dogging Colorado breweries, home jam operations and other businesses.   To read Shannon's story, go to coloradosun.com.   And Before we go, here are a few stories that you should know about today:   Momentum to mandate health care workers get vaccinated against COVID-19 is growing across the country and in Colorado. On Wednesday, two more major health systems announced that they will require their employees to be vaccinated against coronavirus by the fall. UCHealth will require staff to be fully vaccinated by October First. And Denver Health gave its workers a November First deadline. The announcements came after Banner Health said workers at its four Colorado hospitals must get the vaccine.    A parks employee for the city of Arvada has died after the riding lawnmower he was on tipped into a lake. Joe Herrin was a parks maintenance worker who had been with the city since 2018. He was using the mower near the edge of Birdland Lake at Jack B. Tomlinson Park on July 22 when the accident occurred. He died of his injuries yesterday.    Douglas, El Paso, Mesa and Moffat counties are among those in which the CDC is recommending people resume wearing masks indoors in public places. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is now urging people living in communities with high COVID-19 transmission rates to start wearing masks again when indoors. A long list of Colorado counties have high-transmission rates. The CDC said the recommendation applies whether or not people are vaccinated.    Adams County is the first in Colorado to revise its policies on oil and gas since new statewide regulations took effect in January. Commissioners in Adams County adopted new rules during a public hearing this week. The regulations increase setback distances for new drilling to two thousand feet from homes, schools, daycares and parks.    For more information on all of these stories, visit our website, www.coloradosun.com. And don't forget to tune in again tomorrow for a special holiday episode. Now, a quick message from our editor.   The Colorado Sun is non-partisan and completely independent. This week, we’re joined by Sarena Ulibarri, Editor-in-Chief of World Weaver Press and a science fiction writer whose works include Glass and Gardens and Biketopia, and Ed Finn, the Director of the Center for Science and Imagination at Arizona State University, to talk about how solarpunk can shape our understanding of climate change, social issues, and the future. They discuss the immense potential of storytelling in defining an achievable vision for a more sustainable world through a version of science fiction that offers a balance of realism and imagination. In fact, this imagination, Ulibarri and Finn argue, is one of our greatest tools; because issues such as climate change and various sociopolitical concepts have many solutions, applied imagination can help us explore the wide variety of potential solutions as an alternative to fatalism or denial. They also touch upon the unique optimism of solarpunk, particularly in how proposing a better future through the lens of fiction has the ability to excite and invigorate readers towards enacting change. They note that people’s innate desire to feel good means that we must create a new language for debating the immense changes coming our way. This kind of optimism might be niche now, but Solarpunk literature and culture models alternatives and recruits people who actively work to achieve them. A full transcript of this episode will be available soon! Here are some of the references from this episode, for those who want to dig a little deeper:Some of Ullibarri’s works:Glass and GardensBiketopiaAdventures in Zookeeping Organizations, programs, and foundations mentioned:World Weaver Press (Ulibarri is Editor-in-Chief) Center for Science and Imagination at Arizona State University (Finn is Director) Projects include:Future Tense, a collaboration between ASU, New America, and Slate magazine Luna CityThe Weight of LightCities of LightThe Clarion Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers’ WorkshopResearch Institute for Humanity and NatureThe National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL)Media mentioned:Solarpunk Chobani commercialAuthors mentioned:Jeff VanderMeerMarian Womack, author of The SwimmersNeal Stephenson, author of “Innovation Starvation”Margaret AtwoodKim Stanley Robinson, author of ”The Coronavirus and Our Future”Raymond WilliamsFrancesco VersoFor more on Solarpunk:Imaginary Worlds Podcast: “Solarpunk the Future”Trajectory of “Punk” artistic movements:Punk RockCyberpunkSteampunkCheck these past episodes we referenced:Episode 45: “Radicalized” with Cory DoctorowEpisode 64: Japanese Science Fiction with William O. On this episode, Katie is joined by Dr. Nicola Ulibarri, an assistant professor of Urban Planning and Public Policy at the University of California, Irvine, where she leads an interdisciplinary research group that studies water and infrastructure management. Her group combines approaches from environmental planning, public administration, and water resource engineering to improve the interactions between people, infrastructure, and the environment.  In 2010, while doing her PhD at Stanford, Nicola collaboratively developed a workshop curriculum to enhance busy researchers’ creativity with design thinking, a human-centered approach to innovation. That team recently turned the curriculum into a book, Creativity in Research: Cultivate Clarity, Be Innovative, and Make Progress in your Research Journey (Cambridge University Press, 2019). The book presents key abilities that underlie creative research practice through a combination of scientific literature, vignettes, experiential exercises, and guided reflection.

OOOOOO TXAKOLINA EVERYBODY TXAKOLINA! The boys are joined by LIC Market's Alaia Ortega to finally discuss Basque wines and holy shit do they ever destroy all their natural wine credits ASAP. Everyone is too thirsty to discuss farming or whatever -- instead expect a lot of speculation on what exactly a Basque is and whether or not Franco was cool. This is another no cut episode, which we all know the fans can't get enough of. This is a super 2011 statement, but Txakoli is great af, even if it's not "GREAT" af -- theres a lot to think about re: appellation rules in vvv bucolic spots. 100% chance in 10 years none of this will be right.
