In this episode, we're joined by long-time animal rights activist, designer, writer and all around trouble-maker Jake Conroy. Jake was part of the Stop Huntington Animal Cruelty campaign, or SHAC, that campaigned against notorious animal testing company Huntington Life Sciences. SHAC bankrupted Huntington multiple times and were successful in getting them de-listed from the New York Stock Exchange.  The campaign was so effective, the federal government prosecuted Jake and his co-defendants, known as the SHAC 7, as domestic terrorists. After a highly publicized case, the SHAC 7 were found guilty on all charges, including the controversial Animal Enterprise Protection Act (now called the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act) and sentenced to a variety of prison terms and a $1,000,001 restitution fine. Jake was sentenced to 48 months, which he served in 2 prisons in southern California. He was released in 2009. These days, you can see him sharing his view on many things, mostly related to the animal rights movement on his YouTube channel The Cranky Vegan. He has been most recently featured in the new documentary, The Animal People, about the SHAC's case.  Executive produced by Joaquin Phoenix. Directed by Cassandra Suchan (Rock The Bells) and Dennis Henry Hennelly (Bold Native).

We discuss the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act, how it may operate to violate the First Amendment and its chilling effect on activism. We also discuss corporate SLAPP suits including Energy Transfer Partner’s suit to bring a RICO claim against environmental activists at Standing Rock and the entire EarthFirst! environmental movement. Additionally, we discuss Communication Management Units, their clandestine opening in violation of the Administrative Procedures Act, their draconian communication limitations and their use as political prisons. We also discuss the federal government’s detention and egregious treatment of immigrants with minor infractions suspected and later cleared of terrorism charges based solely on racial and religious profiling. Finally, we discuss the Jailhouse Lawyers Handbook and the impact of the recent Supreme Court decision in Ziglar v. Abbasi which denied personal liability for federal officials for constitutional violations and the need for remedial legislation. For More Info:https://www.protecttheprotest.org/category/resource-categories/help-us-end-slapp/https://anti-slapp.org/your-states-free-speech-protection#scorecardhttps://ccrjustice.org/sites/default/files/attach/2017/06/2017-06-19_ZiglarvAbbasi_SCOTUSdecision.pdfhttps://ccrjustice.org/sites/default/files/assets/Turkmen_3rdAmendedComplaint_09_04.pdfhttps://ccrjustice.org/sites/default/files/attach/2015/10/Aref%20Appeal%20brief%2010.28.2015.pdfhttps://ccrjustice.org/sites/default/files/assets/Blum%201st%20circuit%20decision.pdfhttps://ccrjustice.org/sites/default/files/assets/Appellants'%20Opening%20Brief_0.pdfhttps://ccrjustice.org/sites/default/files/attach/2017/11/US%20v%20Johnson%20Appellate%20Decision.pdfhttps://ccrjustice.org/sites/default/files/attach/2016/05/Appeal%20Brief%20and%20Appendix%205.9.16.pdfhttps://ccrjustice.org/sites/default/files/assets/ALDF%20v.%20Otter%20CCR%20amicus%20brief.pdfhttps://ccrjustice.org/sites/default/files/attach/2017/07/ALDF%20v%20Herbert%20%28Utah%20ag%20gag%29%20Order-Granting-Pls-SJ.pdfhttps://ccrjustice.org/sites/default/files/attach/2019/02/135%20Order%202019.02.14.pdfhttps://ccrjustice.org/sites/default/files/attach/2018/04/80%20Earth%20First%20Journal%27s%20Response%20to%20the%20Court%27s%20Order%20of%20March%2022%2C%202018.pdfhttps://ccrjustice.org/sites/default/files/attach/2017/12/1%20complaint.pdf

Donald Rooum, pt1 This week, we invite you to listen in on the first part of a conversation we had with 90 year old anarchist, cartoonist and author, Donald Rooum. Donald was born 1928 in Bradford, UK. Donald is most known for his longtime illustration of the wiley, bomb-throwing, firebrand anarchist cartoon character, Wildcat. In this episode, Donald talks about his early political trajectory and development from childhood involvement during World War II in a Communist Party front group into anarchism via the speakers corner in Hyde Park. Donald talks about the Malatesta Anarchist Club, his artistic development and love of cartooning and engagement with activism to stop corporal punishment in schools in the U.K. and ideas about social change and anarchist intervention. Donald's work was recently the focus of an animated film  by film-maker Adam Luis-Jacob. Here's a brief biography with some of Donald's art (including some Wildcat comics). We'll release the second half of the conversation with Donald in the near future. Some notes from the conversation (followed by announcements): Publications featuring Donald: Peace News website and wikipedia page Freedom (newspaper) website + wikipedia + Donald's history of Freedom Freedom Press website and wikipedia page Donald's Intro to Anarchism on anarchistlibrary Donald's "The Ethics of Egoism" on anarchistlibrary Some low-quality images of Donald's at Spunk.Org People that Donald mentions: Philip Sansome (UK anarchist) wikipedia Vernon Richards (UK anarchist) wikipedia Article from 1945 reprinted on shutting of the War Commentary / Freedom Paper Abdulrahman Mohamed Babu (Zanzibari Revolutionary Nationalist) wikipedia Colin Ward (UK anarchist) wikipedia works by Colin Ward at anarchistlibrary David Hockney (artist) wikipedia Nicholas Walter (anarchist + atheist) wikipedia Benjamin Tucker (American anarchist) wikipedia Works by Benjamin Tucker at anarchistlibrary STOPP in wikipedia . ... . .. . ... . .. . ... . .. . ... . .. Announcements Sean Swain "Sean Swain, a long-term anarchist prisoner in Ohio, has come under fire by the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction. The ODRC has increased Sean's security level from 3 to 5b, an increase that has sent him to solitary confinement, led to him being handcuffed during visits, and further removed him from any possibility for parole. Additionally, the ODRC is threatening to put Sean on interstate compact, a system that ships subversive prisoners around the country, places heavy restrictions on communication, and interns them in the black hole of the interstate compact system. We're calling for any who feel compelled by Sean's plight to call ODRC director Gary Mohr and demand that Sean's appeal to the current disciplinary hearing be granted and that Sean's security level be lowered. (A script for the call can be found below.) Thank you all. Your solidarity means so much. some friends of Sean Swain" Call: Director Gary Mohr 614-387-0588 drc.publicinfo@odrc.state.oh.us melissa.adkins@odrc.state.oh.us (Administrative Assistant for Mohr) CALL-IN SCRIPT: “I am calling on behalf of Sean Swain, inmate #243-205. I am a friend of Sean. I am calling to request the ODRC grant Mr. Swain's appeal regarding his most recent disciplinary record, drop the charges, and lower his security level from 5b to 2. Mr. Swain is not a physical security risk, and there is no reason to keep him at such a high security rating where he will be unable to get the programming he needs to be eligible for rehabilitation and parole. Thank you for your consideration.” Good News! Nicole Kissane, indicted in 2015 for conspiracy to violate the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act via releasing thousands of animals from fur farms and destroying breeding records in Idaho, Montana, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, was released after 21 months in federal prison. She still has 3 years of supervised release, but she's out from behind the actual bars. Welcome home, Nicole! Pansy Fest II If you're in the Asheville area next weekend, August 3-5, consider Pansy Fest II, a DIY queer/trans music and art festival. The fun starts at 2pm on Friday the 3rd at the Mothlight with a full-ticket of bands and ending out with a dance party til 2am. The weekend includes workshops at Firestorm Books & Coffee with more shows & after parties. Proceeds will go to support the Trans Kindred Fund & Tranzmission Prison Project. More info on their fedbook, or by emailing pansyfestavl@gmail.com #AllOutAugust First, coming up fast in early August, fascist and proto-fascist groups are trying to build up some steam for the one year anniversary of the Unite The Right rally on August 12th. The Islamophobic and Western Chauvinist groups Patriot Prayer and Proud Boys are calling for a demonstration and plan to amass a large and likely violent mob in Portland, OR, on August 4th. Antiracists are organizing under #AllOutPDX & #StopTheHate. So a coalition called PopMob, or popular mobilization, is organizing a broad event on August 4th at 10:30 at PDX city hall and then moving at 11:30 to join the larger event at Chapman Square. You can find more information by checking itsgoingdown.org, or finding the events on fedbook called "Stop The Hate" and "Resist Patriot Prayer". The latter is being called by Eugene Antifa & other groups and will meet up at 11:30 at Tom McCall Waterfront Park. Then a week later on the east coast of the so-called U.S. on August 12th there is a call for an Antifascist/Abolitionist Bloc to join the resistance to the far right's call for the Unite The Right 2 at a time and place to be announced on the site ShutItDownDC.org and news can be found under the tag #DefendDC & #AllOutDC. Mumia Abu-Jamal On August 30th in Philadelphia, PA at 13th and Filbert there will be a rally during the hearing of imprisoned journalist, intellectual and former Black Panther, Mumia Abu-Jamal. From 8am til 11am people are asked to show up in support of this man who has spent nearly 40 years in prison, 30 of it in solitary on death row, for a political show trial for the killing of a cop many believe he didn't commit. Whether he did or didn't, Mumia was obviously railroaded for his political beliefs and his reporting critical of the Philly PD & the administration of Frank Rizzo. More on the event, including the nature of the current legal motion, can be found on fedbook. #August21 Repression Starts People are pushing back. For starters: Imam Siddique Abdullah Hasan There is a phone zap in support of Lucasville Uprising prisoner and death row inmate, Siddique Abdullah Hasan, a voice you've heard on this show before. Hasan, a member of the Free Ohio Movement and outspoken activist behind bars for peoples dignity, is believed to be suffering similar repression as he did in the run up to the 2016 National Prison Strike. He has been transfered into the hole, likely as a way to shut him up. There is a phone zap called by the Incarcerated Workers Organizing Committee on Monday, July 30th between 9am and 5pm central time. Details forthcoming on the fedbook event. Kevin “Rashid” Johnson Kevin “Rashid” Johnson, a leader of the New Afrikan Black Panther Party (NABPP) and member of the Incarcerated Workers Organizing Committee (IWOC), whose organizing was discussed in DHS/FBI fusion center “terrorism threat assessment” publications as far back as 2009 (page 50) is being kept in solitary confinement after being given an “inciting a riot” charge for writing an article about the Operation PUSH strikes in Florida, and has faced punitive transfer after transfer.; Keith “Comrade Malik” Washington Keith “Malik” Washington, a Texas inmate who is also involved with the NABPP and IWOC, has spent the past two years in ad-seg (solitary confinement) on a bogus riot charge connected to his involvement in the 2016 prison strike. He was due to be released from ad-seg, but then had his clearance abruptly revoked and was sent back to solitary on the grounds that the classifications committee had “received additional information” from the Fusion Center in Texas. He has also had issues with medical information about his health issues mysteriously disappearing, leading to the administration putting him in dangerous situations, and is currently being held in an extremely hot and humid punishment cell that he describes as being like “a living hell” and causing headaches, nosebleeds and dizziness.; Jason Renard Walker Meanwhile, Jason Renard Walker, another Texas inmate involved with the NABPP and the 2016 strikes, and a contributor to the Fire Inside zine, has managed to get released from solitary, but faces constant threats and harassment from staff, including threats to send him back to solitary on bogus charges for things as simple as asking for water and medical attention, and trying to get back into his own cell so he can use a fan to cool down. Both Malik and Jason have reported having their mail tampered with, and the explicitly political nature of this censorship was made clear in a conversation with a prison official who told Jason that any writing containing the words “black panther” would be treated as gang material. Supporting the prison strike means monitoring and opposing the repressive methods that the prison system uses to try and break it, and paying attention to the treatment of 2016 strike organizers like Rashid, Malik, Jason and others can indicate the tactics that are likely to be used more widely in the weeks to come. Numbers and scripts to call in with for Malik's situation: Malik has specifically requested a call-in campaign urging Texas legislators to investigate the conditions at the McConnell Unit. Below are some details of Texas legislators and TDCJ officials, along with a suggested script you can use: John Whitmire, chair of the Texas Senate Criminal Justice Committee - (512) 463-0115 or (713) 864-8701 john.whitmire@senate.texas.gov (713) 864-5287 (fax) Sylvia Garcia, member of the Texas Senate Criminal Justice Committee - (512) 463-0106 or (713) 453-5100 sylvia.garcia@senate.texas.gov (512) 463-0346 (fax) José Menéndez, member of the Texas Senate Criminal Justice Committee - (512) 463-0126 or (210) 733-6604 jose.menendez@senate.texas.gov or (512) 463-2424 (fax) James White, chair of the House Committee on Corrections - (512) 463-0490 or (409) 283-3700 James.White@house.texas.gov or (512) 463-9059 (fax) Alma Allen, vice-chair of the House Committee on Corrections - (512) 463-0744 or (713) 776-0505 Alma.Allen@house.state.tx.us or (512) 463-0761 (fax) Abe Martinez, US Attorney – (713) 567-9349 or abe.martinez@usdoj.gov Ryan K Patrick, US Attorney – (713)-567-9000 Bryan Collier, TDCJ Excecutive Director – (936) 437-2101 / (936) 437-2123 or exec.director@tdcj.texas.gov Billy Hirsch, TDCJ Deputy Director – Billy.Hirsch@tdcj.texas.gov Philip Sifuentes, McConnell Unit Warden – (361) 362-2300 or philip.sifuentes@tdcj.texas.gov Miguel Martinez, Regional Director with responsibility for the McConnell Unit – (361) 362-6328 or miguel.martinez@tdcj.texas.gov Patricia Chapa, Assistant Regional Director – Patricia.Chapa@tdcj.texas.gov Emil Garza, Assistant Regional Director – Emil.Garza@tdcj.texas.gov Garth Parker, Telford Unit Warden – (903) 628-3171 garth.parker@tdcj.texas.gov Billy Howard, Assistant Regional Director with responsibility for the Telford Unit – billy.howard@tdcj.texas.gov Carl McKellar, Assistant Regional Director with responsibility for the Telford Unit – carl.mckellar@tdcj.texas.gov “Hello, my name is ----, and I am contacting you about conditions in the prisons run by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. I demand that the dangerous conditions of extreme heat and humidity that are widespread in units such as the McConnell and Telford Units are fully investigated and rectified immediately. I further request that immediate heat relief measures are put in place, as this is especially urgent for prisoners with health issues. The prison administration needs to stop the retaliation and harassment of whistleblowers such as Keith Washington (TDCJ 1487958) and Jason Walker (TDCJ 1532092). This retaliation includes, but is not limited to, unjustified use of solitary confinement as a punishment for constitutionally protected speech, denial of parole applications, and direct threats of harm. Please be aware that the State of Texas and the TDCJ may be held legally responsible for any harm suffered by these or any other inmates as a result of the administration's negligence or punitive actions. The practice of giving guards quotas of disciplinary reports to meet must also be stopped at once, as this leads to the generation of false or trivial reports as a way of meeting quotas. In closing, I also wish to state my support for the demands of the ongoing prison strike movement. Yours sincerely,” Other ways to help Malik: 1. *Finding legal representation* Malik has stated that he urgently needs professional legal help in challenging the various forms of harassment he has been subjected to, particularly the interference with his mail. If you know of any sympathetic lawyers or other legal-minded folk who might be able to help, please contact them and ask if they could take the case on. 2. *Write to the comrades!* Every letter they receive lifts their spirit and protects them, because it lets prison officials know they have people around them, watching for what happens to them. It should also be possible to contact them via jpay.com if you prefer. Keith H. Congrats! Now, we'd like to invite you to help us out a bit. The Final Straw Radio has been bringing you interviews with anarchists, anti-capitalists, feminists, eco-defenders, anti-racists and anti-fascists, prison rebels and prison abolitionists, authors and iconoclasts every week since 2009. And we've only been getting better. If you appreciate the work that we do, here're a few things you can do to show your appreciation: If you live in an area with a community radio station, one of those that isn't run by something like ClearChannel and just bumping the top 40's hits nor one that's preaching a gospel of pie in the sky when you die, consider helping us get onto your local airwaves. Community radio is often a shoestring venture with little locally produced content and is often happy for suggestions of what may bring listeners to their airwaves and get involved in local media and activism. If you are one of the lucky ones who lives near one of these stations, you can email the station or programming director and say that you are an avid listener and that you want to hear The Final Straw Radio on your local airwaves. Tell them that our show is free to air, that we produce an FCC-acceptable show that won't get them tattled on and that we produce it consistently, each Sunday night at 59 minutes in length. You can find out more about our radio option at our website by clicking the “Radio Broadcasting” tab. Another way you can help us out might be to share our podcast with people you care about in your community. You could rate us on iTunes so more people will see us, or share us on the obnoxious social medias that we are present on which you can find links to on the kontact page of our website. While you're sharing us, why not share the monthly anarchist news show we participate in known as B(A)D News: Angry Voices From Around The World produced by the A-Radio Network or check out the shows that share the Channel Zero Network? Or, you could drop us a line, tell us how we're doing, comment on our shows or give us suggestions for future episodes. We are always welcome to dialogue and suggestions, though we don't take ‘em all. Finally, you could give us a donation, one time over paypal or recurring via Liberapay, an open source donation platform from France, or Patreon. Check out our Patreon for the thank you gifts that we offer to recurring donators. We have shirts, buttons, stickers and other swag up on there. See something you like but can't afford a monthly donation? Send us an email and we'll see what we can work out. The money goes to cover our production costs and save up for travels to conferences and events where we can get you more of that anarchist audio that you crave. Thanks so much!

On this episode, Kumars and Roqayah are joined by Ryan Shapiro, a PhD student and transparency researcher at MIT. Ryan talks about his past work as an activist in the animal rights movement and as a scholar of government repression of animal rights activists, research described by the FBI as having the potential to cause “irreparable damage to national security”. He shares his extensive history of animal rescue operations, including rescuing animals from factory farms and thwarting whale poachers. We hear about the impact of the federal Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act, which designates investigative journalists and animal rescuers seeking to uncover and remedy animal abuse in the meat and dairy industry as terrorists. "Ecoterrorism" is considered the #1 domestic terror threat while ever increasing white supremacist violence continues to be ignored.  Ryan explains why Department of Justice calls him the “most prolific” Freedom of Information Act or FOIA requester, including uncovering evidence of CIA involvement in Nelson Mandela’s imprisonment and the FBI cover-up of a plot to assassinate Occupy Houston leaders. We also discuss Property of the People, the transparency nonprofit Ryan co-founded to file FOIA claims and challenge the government in court. Ryan, Roqayah and Kumars end by discussing their personal attitudes as leftists towards veganism and animal rights, including reflecting on the tensions between animal rights organizers and other corners of the left. Is Democracy what we're fighting for, as anarchists? In episode 47 of the Ex-Worker Podcast, a contentious debate between Clara and Alanis on this topic sets the stage for an upcoming, in-depth engagement with the topic of Democracy. In addition, we clean out our backlog of listener feedback, clarifying our trash-talking of both the Bay Area and Adbusters in past episodes, as well as hearing from a listener in Australia about various online resources for finding out what's happening with anarchist and anti-fascists in the land down under. NYC Anarchist Black Cross provides us with thorough political prisoner updates, and we share a review of the book Huye Hombre Huye, available from Little Black Cart. As always, the episode is bookended with global news updates, plus prisoner birthdays, a whole slew of upcoming anarchist bookfairs and other events and more. {March 16, 2016} -------SHOW NOTES------ New York Anarchist Black Cross (NYC ABC) is doing a fantastic job of keeping us updated on political prisoners and prisoners of war. If you're looking for a comprehensive overview of political prisoners in the US, you can check out their new Illustrated Guide to Political Prisoners. It's got detailed info on all their cases including up to date mailing addresses plus tips on writing to prisoners; it's a great overview if you want to support radical prisoners but aren't sure where to start. Dr. Mutulu Shakur, a longtime black liberation prisoner who helped Assata Shakur escape to freedom, was supposed to be released from prison in February… but his release was denied at the last minute. He'll be facing the parole board later this spring. Here's a link to a statement he wrote explaining the situation with more info on how to show support. Supporters have also launched a new website at MutuluIsWelcomeHere.com to gather stories describing his the positive impacts he has made and to organize solidarity events leading up to his parole hearing. Former Black Panther Maliki Shakur Latine will also be heading to the parole board in April, and he's collecting parole letters; check out justiceformaliki.org for details. Supporters of Brandon Baxter (one of the Cleveland Four, anarchists active in the Occupy movement who were entrapped in an FBI plot) are doing a small fundraising campaign right now to help with costs to get him some visitors in his new digs at FCI Terre Haute in Indiana. Brandon hasn't received any visitors since his sentencing, and he's never had a in person visit since his arrest. He's about 11 hours away from his supporters who plan to visit and they need to raise some money for a car rental. They're only a couple of hundred bucks short, so even if you can throw in a few dollars it'll make a difference. Any donations not used for this trip will go into the general fund to support the Cleveland Four getting visitors. To learn more about their case, check out cleveland4solidarity.org or listen to Episode 17 on Conspiracy. Eric King, an anarchist from Kansas City accused of an alleged attack on a politician's office, has accepted a non-cooperating plea deal for a ten year prison sentence; after time served, he's got eight and a half years left to go. On top of this, the facility where he's locked up CCA is now on lock-down, and Eric has been put in solitary confinement. Please take a few minutes to send Eric a postcard or letter to remind him that folks are thinking of him. Eric King 27090045 CCA Leavenworth 100 Highway Terrace Leavenworth, KS 66048 Former earth liberation prisoner Daniel McGowan will be in court on March 15th in Washington, DC to support the Center for Constitutional Rights' case against the Federal Bureau of Prisons' “Communication Management Units.” The CMUs are experimental prison units that impose severe restrictions on prisoners' communications, both within the prison and with the outside world. If you're in the DC area and you want to show some solidarity against a particularly vicious form of repression - one that has primarily targeted Muslims and political radicals - you can find the info on our website. On March 23, Tyler Lang has his sentencing hearing for his charges under the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act for releasing thousands of animals from a fur farm. If you can be in Chicago, please attend the hearing to show support for Tyler. It is important that on this difficult day for Tyler that he feel surrounded by love and solidarity, and that the judge see that Tyler is part of a community that is there for him. His co-defendant Kevin Olliff was sentenced to three years, which with time serve means he's only got about three months left to go! J ay Chase of the NATO 3 has one more pretrial hearing in Chicago on March 23rd - actually at the same time as Tyler Lang's sentencing hearing, though in a different courtroom, before he goes to trial on April 11th. Supporters ask anyone to come out who's able and to continue sending Jay support through letters or mailing softcover books. Stay posted on updates at freethenato3.wordpress.com. Solecast, the excellent anarchist podcast we mentioned at the end of the listener feedback, can be found on it's website here and on iTunes. We highly recommend that you check it out! As we mentioned, anarchist in Belgium are facing repression and prison time for alleged property destruction related to a long struggle against the construction of a Maxi-Prison in Haren. A little more information about the struggle and information about how to send money or otherwise show solidarity can be found here. Our listener Cut Snake wrote in response to our request to send us a list of blogs and websites that publish news of interest to anarchists and antifascists from Australia. This should keep us all busy for a while: DISACCORDS ANARCHIST AFFINITY MELBOURNE ANTIFASCISTS REZZA ANTIFA SLACKBASTARD MELBOURNE ANARCHIST CLUB FTP ZINE MELBOURNE ANARCHIST COMMUNIST GROUP BLACK ROSE JURA BOOKS MUTINY ZINE Huye Hombre Huye, the book we reviewed on today's chopping block, is available from little black cart on their website. The material from our theme segment today was inspired by the new 10-part Crimethinc. Feature critiquing democracy. It's not posted yet, but when it is it'll be up at crimethinc.com. And don't forget to stay tuned to the podcast for our upcoming audio version, plus more information about how to plug into reading groups. The theme segment also mentioned and quoted from another piece called ‘Breaking with Consensus Reality,' from the zine Terror Incognita, released in the U.S. around the time of the Occupy movement. From March 18th to 20th in Athens, Ohio, Appalachia Resist! will host an action camp in to connect environmental justice and social justice efforts in the Appalachian region. Here's how they describe themselves: Appalachia Resist! is a small group of rural activists who use direct action as a tactic to resist the fracking industry in our region. We work and live in a rural working class community that is predominant white. We see that struggles for environmental justice and the ongoing fight for racial justice are linked. We want to articulate that link and find concrete ways to work together to push back against a system that brutalizes and sees as disposable the bodies of low income rural people, people of color, gender nonconforming people, women, native, and undocumented people. Mentioning all these people together should not be a way of erasing difference (this is not “all lives matter”) but a way of seeking actual solidarity based on mutual liberation. This is a monumental task, and we are definitely not experts. But we think it's important and necessary. They're encouraging regional activists working on racial justice, anti-rape culture, prison solidarity and prison abolition, environmental justice and anti-extraction, and other struggles to take part. In Seoul, South Korea, the Anarchist Film Festival of Hannam-dong will open March 24th through 26th at “Take Out Drawing”, an art space standing in defiance of gentrification in downtown Seoul. On April 23rd at Stone Mountain, outside Atlanta, Georgia, there's a big white supremacist rally planned, and anti-fascists around the region are gearing up to shut it down. Check out the website alloutatl.com for more info on the mobilization; it articulates some shared principles that address some of the nuances of diverse anti-racist mobilizations in a particularly thoughtful way. The anarchist book fair season kicks off in earnest in April, with book fairs in Zagreb, Croatia on the 8th through 10th; Dublin, Ireland on the 15th and 16th; Sheffield, UK on the 23rd, Oakland, California on the 26th, and Bristol, UK on the 30th, followed by Bern, Switzerland on May 6th and 7th. Trinidad is a high level member of The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia—People's Army whom the United States government tried to frame on drug trafficking charges which failed but was able to convict him a kidnapping that he was not involved in that allegedly occurred in another country."For the past seven years, he has been a resident of the U.S. Penitentiary Administrative Maximum, better known as ADX. In the highest-security prison in North America, Trinidad is serving a sixty-year sentence for “conspiracy to commit hostage-taking,” based on a kidnapping that occurred on another continent — and without, his attorneys insist, any direct involvement on his part." - ALAN PRENDERGASTLets discuss the audacity of the US government bringing drug trafficking charges against Simón Trinidad while its agents partied with prostitutes in Colombia as well as cutting deals with the Mexican Sinoloa cartel. The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia—People's Army is currently involved in peace negotiations sponsored in Cuba which is celebrating its 56th year of independence from the brutal rule of puppet tyrants controlled by the West. Two new activist join the ranks of political prisoners in the USA. "Two animal-rights activists have been charged with terrorizing the fur industry during cross-country road trips in which they released about 5,740 mink from farms and vandalized the homes and businesses of industry members, the FBI said Friday. The FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force arrested Joseph Brian Buddenberg, 31, and Nicole Juanita Kissane, 28, both of California, and federal prosecutors charged them with conspiracy to violate the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act." - APThese "terrorism" charges against animal rights activists are another example that US Attorney General Loretta Lynch was being less than truthful when she indicated that there are no terrorism charges that can be brought against Dylan Roof.Black Lives Matter demonstrators interrupted a recent presidential debate to force them to discuss the state sponsored terrorism known as police brutality in the United States. In Cleveland where organizers are having a conference, it is being reported that police attacked activist with chemical weapons when they came to the aid of a 14 yr-old attacked by police at a bus stop across the street from the Black Lives Matter conference. The medical campaign for Black Panther activist Robert Seth Hayes. Sarahjane Blum is a Jane of all trades when it comes to veganism and animal rights. In this episode Dallas and Ryan chat with her about the decade she's spent working on issues around the production and sale of foie gras - the diseased fatty livers of ducks and geese marketed and sold as a delicacy. As the campaign coordinator for Forego Foie Gras Minneapolis through the Animal Rights Coalition, Dallas, Ryan, and Sarahjane discuss why foie gras is a unique conversation starter for a larger conversation about the problems inherent with farming animals.  She is also an organizer for Support Vegans In the Prison System, a group dedicated to advocating for nutritionally adequate meals for incarcerated vegans. We also chat about her experience unknowingly adopting a dog who turned out to have fear aggression issues and how she and her husband navigated that surprise. And as if that isn't enough, this woman is also the lead plaintiff in a lawsuit against the federal government in which she is challenging the constitutionality of the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act! This is an episode not to be missed.

On December 17, 2006 a conference was held at the Peace Abbey in Sherborn, MA to discuss the recently passed Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act. Vegan Radio was there recording the conference, which featured presentations by professor Roger Gottlieb, Drew Wilson, Odette Wilkens and Peter Muller from the Equal Justice Alliance, and a phone-in interview by U.S. Congressman and presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich. Our musical guest is Exit Ophelia. We also feature an interview with Walker Argendeli, a talented 13-year-old who is a dedicated vegan, has started his own computer company, and is writing a novel. What's more, he is a spelling bee champion. Megan prides herself on her spelling, and Scott thinks he is pretty smart too... so we have our own little spelling bee to see who is the real vegan spelling whiz.

This is a great show! We feature an interview with Amie Breeze Harper about her Sistah Vegan Anthology. Amie is a Masters Student at Harvard University EXT. She is focusing her Master's Thesis research on a project called Cyberterritories of Whiteness: Language, 'Colorblind' Utopias, and Sistah Vegan Consciousness. Amie was motivated by the negative responses that a PeTA Campaign comparing slavery, women's suffrage and the Holocaust to animal oppression drew on an African American oriented message board. Amie felt that what she saw "wasn't offensive but was in fact captivating and thought provoking, inducing critical consciousness engagement in viewers to question their own normative practices." She decided to start interviewing black identified vegan females for an anthology that she hopes "will be an effective literary model that will show the Black community (as well as all people) the health and environmental/ecological benefits of strongly considering veganism as a practice that simultaneously resists institutionalized racism and other legacies of slavery and colonialism."Our musical guest is Matana Roberts, a saxophonist and composer who tries to expose in her music the mystical roots and spiritual traditions of African American creative expression. Matana is a contributor to the Sistah Vegan Anthology. We have an intro audio clip from the recent "blessing of the animals" at Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary. Finally, we are interviewing Rocky Shepherd who runs a web site called Stop AETA. AETA is an acronym for the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act which is an abominable new legislation which was snuck through the US Senate just before they went on vacation and will go to the House of Representatives in November when they reconvene. This bill would make even the mildest non-violent protests into possible acts of "terrorism" punishable by severe jail sentences. Rocky gives us an overview of the act and ideas on how to stop this encroachment on our civil liberties and First Amendment rights before it is too late.
