Junseth is an OG Bitcoiner and the former co-host of Bitcoin Uncensored. In this interview, we discuss how the early days of Bitcoin mirror the issues we're seeing in the ecosystem today: over leverage, unsustainable returns, greed and excessive confidence that the party won't end. - - - - The contagion in the DeFi market over the past few months has seemed unprecedented. Major companies wiped out. Investors rekt. Confidence turned to panic. Commentators have been declaring that the recent events are an existential crisis: this time Bitcoin is really dead. As one of the OG Bitcoiners, Junseth was part of the initial wave who eulogized and expanded on what the innovation could possibly mean for the world before the world had heard of Bitcoin. Then, between 2015-2017, he hosted the uncompromising podcast Bitcoin Uncensored, with Chris DeRose. They exposed false promises and scams prevalent in the space. Past is, as they say, prologue. And the past events that triggered the development of Bitcoin, and its early days, rhyme with the present. Junseth connects the over-leverage within traditional finance, which was the predicate for Satoshi's message in the genesis block, with the excessive confidence and greed that has been the root of the cascading collapse of DeFi companies. In turn, the untenable yields prevalent within the altcoin markets were a practice employed by scammers working with Bitcoin nearly a decade ago. What are the important lessons to learn? Humans are creatures of habit: scams and greed will always follow the money. But, is the more important lesson that the unnecessary complexity of the grift that develops diverts from the principle simplicity of Bitcoin? Is the innovation of digital value the singular utility? Will those motivated by greed, therefore, miss the real purpose of Bitcoin? Should we instead follow the actions of those motivated by need?

Two years before the Civil War, Congressman Daniel Sickles and his lovely wife Teresa were popular fixtures in Washington, D.C. society. Their house sat on Lafayette Square across from White House grounds, and the president himself was godfather to the Sickleses’ six-year-old daughter. Because Congressman Sickles is frequently out of town, he trusted his friend, U.S. Attorney Philip Barton Key—son of Francis Scott Key—to escort the beautiful Mrs. Sickles to parties in his absence. Revelers in D.C. were accustomed to the sight of the congressman’s wife with the tall, Apollo-like Philip Barton Key.Then one day Daniel Sickles received an anonymous note suggesting his wife's infidelity. It sets into motion a tragic course of events that culminated in a shocking murder in broad daylight in Lafayette Square.Today's guest is Chris DeRose, author of the book Star Spangled Scandal, about the biggest media sensation in Civil War America. The press couldn't get enough of the trial, which had a play based on the events hit the stage as the trial was in progress. The trial introduced the concepts of the insanity defense, challenged ideas of chivalry and masculinity, and ensconced ideas of an unwritten law, where “honor crimes” were tolerated by judges for nearly a century after the trial.

Not only understanding the tech but the various people and projects which have come and gone. There is also a long history of scams and/or poorly thought out projects promising riches from the mythical properties of the blockchain. With Bitcoin Uncensored, Chris DeRose and Junseth actively regularly dissected these projects, exposing the false promises and scams prevalent in the space but they acrimoniously split in 2017 as their visions and personal objectives were no longer aligned. The podcast was very popular with many Bitcoiners but also created them enemies with their no holds barred content. Chris and Junseth agreed to come on the What Bitcoin Podcast to discuss the history of the show, their current view on the space, scams, changing narratives and the pressures of running a podcast.-----If you enjoy The What Bitcoin Did Podcast you can help support the show my doing the following:Become a Patron and get access to shows early or help contributeMake a tip:Bitcoin: 3FiC6w7eb3dkcaNHMAnj39ANTAkv8Ufi2SQR Codes: Bitcoin | Ethereum | Litecoin | Monero | ZCash | RipplecoinIf you do send a tip then please email me so that I can say thank youSubscribe on iTunes | Spotify | Stitcher | SoundCloud | YouTube | TuneIn | RSS FeedLeave a review on iTunesShare the show and episodes with your friends and familySubscribe to the newsletter on my websiteFollow me on Twitter Personal | Twitter Podcast | Instagram | Medium | YouTubeIf you are interested in sponsoring the show, you can read more about that here or please feel free to drop me an email to discuss options.

Two of the most prevalent problems in analysis of crypto: 1. Allegiance to a blockchain - as a fan of X coin, your arguments are emotionally driven 2. Lack of historical perspective - lessons from other technological shifts Chris is aware of both of these problems and has a unique perspective on how to think about the future going forward. I learned a ton both as an investor and a believer in the purpose of cryptocurrencies.

The main takeaway is that blockchain is a fundamental enabling technology which may be harnessed for any number of goals.

Altcoins Anonymous – Kissed by DeRose This is essentially an apology Chris DeRose. This episode is a critique of Chris DeRose's recent installment of DeRose Uncensored, where Chris interviews members of the Archetype project, found at Archetype.mx. Archetype is a tokenized meme economy where people can exchange memes on Ethereum. In fact, it's pretty much a Rare Pepe/ PepeCash clone. Honestly, I don't even want to type out some the bullshit that I listened to, just because it will dignify the project with some credibility, and subsequently come up in a google search result. However, it would seems as if during the entirety of the interview, DeRose was pumping Archetype. As an audience member, it's disappointing for me to see horrible projects like Archetype be put on an equal platform as Bitcoin. I don't appreciate DeRose trivializing many of the aspects that make blockchain technology interesting. I couldn't tell if I was overreacting, but to me the joke wasn't delivered in way that is safe for an unsuspecting audience. Luckily, I've been around to see Rare Pepe and understand stupid shit can comes out of this. But, a new and unsuspecting audience member that is unfamiliar with some of the eccentric history of Bitcoin could easily get lost in the message that was being portrayed. Chris seemed to think people were freaking out in the chat, but it really seems like this wasn't a funny joke that he's going to try to benefit monetarily from this eventually. Chris DeRose has written a terrific book about a little understood period of American history, those years between the Declaration of Independence in 1776 and the first session of Congress under the Constitution in 1789. Founding Rivals: Madison vs. Monroe, The Bill of Rights, and The Election that Saved a Nation Beyond the story of Madison and Monroe, one thing that struck me time and again was how similar the country’s problems were as a nascent nation and today as a world superpower. The very first tax bill that came before Congress went nowhere and was punted to a “Committee”. Really. On day one of the first session of Congress, the country had a “staggering” $54 million debt, 12% of which was owned by foreign governments. Sound familiar? Madison did a study of failed governments throughout history and the common thread he discovered was paralysis. They were no longer able to govern. Super committee anyone? Overseas rivals mocking our government’s ability to function, not to mention our balance sheet. China and Russia do this regularly. Even intransigent politicians ignoring directives goes back to our Founding. When Pulitzer-prize winner Ron Suskind joined us to talk Confidence Men, he told a story about Treasury Secretary Geithner ignoring a directive from President Obama to break apart Citigroup. Geithner disagreed so he simply ignored it. In Founding Rivals, the order was to strike a deal with Spain to secure access to the Mississippi River. New York’s John Jay didn’t agree and set out to do the exact opposite. Thanks largely to Madison and Monroe, he was unsuccessful. It was remarkable how relevant this book is today. At it’s core, it is the story of life long allies who ultimately became political rivals without becoming personal enemies. Buy this book for any history lover on yopopur holiday shopping list!
