Champion's Mojo
The Feel-Good-Comeback-Story of NCAA All-American Owen Lloyd, EP 277

Champion's Mojo

A disqualification that turns into one of swimming's most viral moments. A champion brought to his knees in tears as officials strip away his victory. And a redemption exactly one year later that proves sometimes, the universe does give second chances.NC State NCAA All-American and ACC Champion in the mile (1650), Owen Lloyd's journey from heartbreak to triumph embodies everything we love about sports comebacks. After winning the mile at the ACC Championships during his senior year, Owen experienced the crushing disappointment of being disqualified for inadvertently falling into a competitor's lane during celebration. The moment – captured on camera just as he was about to be interviewed as champion – amassed over a million views online and sparked outrage throughout the swimming community.Rather than let this devastating moment define him, Owen returned for a fifth year with renewed determination. He meticulously developed mental techniques to maintain focus during his grueling event, including playing specific songs in his head throughout different phases of the race. His disciplined approach to training included benchmark test sets that built unshakable confidence, even when facing Olympic-level competition. The story reaches its perfect conclusion when Owen returns to ACCs one year later, executing a flawless strategic race to reclaim his rightful title with the best time of his career. As he touched the wall in victory, the basketball phrase "ball don't lie" said everything that needed saying. His improvement from a 15:24 freshman to a 14:29 fifth-year stands as testament to what's possible when defeat becomes fuel rather than a final chapter.Whether you're a swimmer or simply someone who appreciates inspiring comebacks against the odds, Owen's story reminds us that our greatest setbacks often precede our greatest triumphs. Listen now and discover how the discipline of distance swimming creates not just champions in the pool, but individuals equipped to overcome life's most challenging moments.• NC State All-American and ACC Champion in the mile (1650)• Improved from 15:24 as a freshman to 14:29 in his fifth year• Masters Student focusing on coaching, leadership and psychology• Recently retired from competitive swimming at 2023 NCAAs• Uses carefully selected music in his head to maintain focus during races• Created a strict 3-hour pre-race routine for the mile• Endured a heartbreaking disqualification after winning ACCs• Returned one year later to win the event legitimately against stronger competition• Planning to pursue coaching at the collegiate level• Values "pressure is a privilege" as his guiding philosophyEmail us at HELLO@ChampionsMojo.com. Great ideas can be Game Changers and we talk to the people who made them great! On this episode of The Decentralists we speak with Scott Chu, a 2nd year Masters student in Management Information Systems at the Sauder School of Business at the University of British Columbia. Scott's research interests are focused on investigating how organizations can harness advances in technology to realize certain business benefits. His research as an intern with Manyone this past summer, involved comparing annual financial performance measures between firms that experienced different types of data breaches, to highlight problems that blockchain technology could solve. How much could a credential-based data breach cost your company? and how decentralized, user-centric identity and access could reduce your risk?Scott's final research report, Evaluating the Financial Impact of Data Breaches Involving Account Credentials, is available for viewing from the Peer Social and Manyone websites under a new content category we call  Game Changers.

The Emergence of the Gulf States: Studies in Modern History (Bloomsbury, 2016) offers an overview of the history of Saudi Arabia and the five Persian/Arabian Gulf states that emerged from British rule between 1961 and 1971--including Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Oman, and the United Arab Emirates. The book synthesized the works of many academics, all experts in their field to bring forward a book that is as comprehensive as possible about the history of the region. It has 11 chapter and all but one chapter are organized into two sections. The first section provides a narrative of the the topic and the second a bibliographic overview. The scope of the book is vast but predominantly focus on the the history of the gulf from the 1800s to roughly the 1970s and in some cases the 80s. A general theme that the book centers around is that historically speaking, the gulf was interconnected within itself, as Arabs and Persians and other respective ethnic groups, intermixed, traded, fought and married within themselves. Hence the creation of the nation states politically, economically, socially and academically disconnected the region, changing the way people interacted with each other and the outside world as well as shaping the way in which academics studies them. J. E. Peterson is affiliated with the Center for Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Arizona, USA. He has been a Fellow at the Foreign Policy Research Institute (Philadelphia) and the Middle East Institute (Washington, D.C.), and an Adjunct Fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (Washington, D.C.). Until 1999, he served as the Historian of the Sultan's Armed Forces in the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister for Security and Defence in Muscat, Sultanate of Oman, and spent 2000-2001 at the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London. My guest is South African, Richard Hay. He is finalizing his MSc in Agronomy at the University of Pretoria in South Africa. He attributes his interests in science, mainly agricultural, to his childhood, where he grew up on his grandfather farm, who was a qualified plant breeder. Richard believes that there needs to be a change in the mindset that agriculture is not a "complex science. " He believes that social media can be a tool to change this stigma. In this episode, we learn about his master's research that examines how small-scale and emerging commercial farmers are using social media to connect and share information. The study also looks at how researchers can use the platforms for effective science communication.  Richard further elaborates that there is a huge need for these online platforms as the small-scale are hungry for the information that is relevant to them about the theory of agricultural science to upskill themselves. To find out more about this research and the root of Richard's science, do stay tuned. Twitter: @haysharvestLinkedIn: Richard HaySupport the show (https://paypal.me/RootofSciPod?locale.x=en_US)
