My life has been intertwined with PTSD/Trauma and the military. Not only am I the daughter of a Vietnam Veteran, I was also married to an active duty member (and Iraq/Afghanistan Veteran) for over 20 years. For 3 years, I volunteered at the Warrior Transition Battalion at Fort Riley, Kansas providing yoga therapy, meditation, and other holistic treatments to the soldiers, family members, and staff. After seeing others struggle, and having my own personal struggles with trauma/PTSD, I was inspired to create the Trauma Healing Yoga Therapy Program. As a Yoga Therapist and founder of the Trauma Healing Yoga Therapy Program, I guide others in the use of effective, science based yoga therapy and other holistic techniques for the management/healing of symptoms relating to PTSD and trauma for people who want to control their PTSD - not allow it to control them. Recently, I have focused my efforts to working with women who have been sexually traumatized to help them heal their PTSD (and other trauma related issues) with yoga therapy. As a 2x rape survivor, I intimately understand the needs these women face, and help them navigate their healing journeys. I earned my 200 RYT, 500 RYT and was awarded my Certification in Yoga Therapy from the International Association of Yoga Therapy. Additionally, I have completed a 120 Hour YogaFit Warriors training and the MBSR (Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction) online course through the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. Currently a student with the Phoenix Rising School of Yoga Therapy, I'm learning another approach to utilizing yoga to help release trauma from the body. I work with people with all types of physical conditions, however, I specialize in working with those suffering from PTSD, TBI's and all trauma-related issues and have been for over the past 5 years. Content Warning: Detailed sexual assault memories and related trauma discussionOur bodies absorb every experience we have. These experiences can manifest in our bodies mentally, emotionally, and physically. So when we suffer a traumatic event, how does that resonate in our bodies? And how can we heal from those resonating responses? I'm joined today by Yoga Therapist and Founder of the Trauma Healing Yoga Therapy Program, Anissa Hudak. Anissa and I talk about PTSD from trauma and how those memories live in us and return unbidden. Most importantly, Anissa shares how to process that trauma and how to walk a healing journey. Anissa and I each share personal stories of sexual assault and triggered traumatic memories as ways to really dig into Anissa's processes surrounding healing. She explains where trauma lives in the body and brain, how it might look physically, and how PTSD draws on those memories. As a 2x rape survivor, I intimately understand the needs these women face, and help them navigate their healing journeys. Healing from PTSD takes more than talk therapy and meds! Since PTSD starts in the body, we must release it from the body to achieve a more complete healing - this is where the yoga therapy comes in! I'm all about education, empowerment & advocating for oneself. When I became educated about PTSD and learned why I emotionally reacted certain ways and why my body physically reacted in certain ways, I then had the choice - I didn't have to react those ways if it wasn't serving me (it usually wasn't). That choice - being able to decide how I wanted to (or not) react to certain situations was very empowering. With education and empowerment to back me, I was then able to advocate for myself to get my needs better served and help heal from my experiences and PTSD. I'm not "cured" (I don't think anyone can really say that in this situation), but I have more control and better management of my PTSD. This healing journey is a lifelong marathon. 1 in 4 women are a survivor of some type of negative sexual experience. Today I'm talking with Anissa Hudak, a registered yoga trainer who works with PTSD, trauma, and the military. She volunteers with soldiers to provide yoga and other therapies, she founded the Trauma Healing Yoga Therapy program, which uses science-based yoga and holistic techniques to treat PTSD and trauma. Discovering Yoga-Based TherapyAnissa found her current calling when she started taking yoga teacher training classes. At first, she wanted to have the skills for her own journey, but after the class ended found opportunities opened up for her. She loved that this new profession felt like sharing a gift rather than teaching. After taking classes geared towards PTSD survivors and veterans, Anissa saw that she had an opportunity to take these gifts back to her community. As the daughter of a Vietnam veteran and the wife of an active duty combatant, she feels a special connection to those in the military and their families. From there, her journey went from one of self-discovery to helping others recover. What Does PTSD Look Like? PTSD presents in many different ways, which can make diagnosing it difficult. Anxiety, depression, and troubles with sleep are more recognizable symptoms. But sensitivity to light and trouble hearing can also be signs of PTSD, Anissa explains, since PTSD is an inflammatory illness. Many factors make up PTSD before it happens, as well. The stress levels of a person before a traumatic incident, their childhood, and any pre-existing mental illnesses can determine why one person may return from an event traumatized while another doesn't. Anissa explains that PTSD is the body saying, “I need a reset” in the central nervous system. PTSD starts in the body and manifests as a mental health issue. How Does Yoga Help PTSD? Anissa stays away from saying PTSD can be ‘cured,' but does believe that it can be healed. Yoga allows practitioners to stay in the moment, which is helpful when facing PTSD triggers that try to take you back to the past. Anissa's practice utilizes yoga to help reset the central nervous system. The more someone does it, the longer they're able to stay in the upper echelon of their brain, rather than in the fight-or-flight response. Anissa specifically curates her practices for people with PTSD. Slowing down can be triggering for some people, which is why Anissa's classes are interactive and engaging. The body is allowed to move slower while the brain remains occupied. By sharing her practice, Anissa hopes that more people can start to understand what PTSD is, where it lives in the body, and how it can be treated. PTSD and trauma can be extremely challenging to work through. Unfortunately, the western methods of treatment like medications and therapy just don't work for everyone. Sometimes you need to branch out into non-traditional therapy forms to find the healing you're looking for. Not only am I the daughter of a Vietnam Veteran, I was also married to an active duty member (and Iraq/Afghanistan Veteran) for over 20 years. For 3 years, I volunteered at the Warrior Transition Battalion at Fort Riley, Kansas providing yoga therapy, meditation, and other holistic treatments to the soldiers, family members, and staff. Annisa Hudak is a Reiki Master and expert Yoga Therapist who has dedicated her career to helping people who have experienced significant trauma during their lifetime.
