My life has been intertwined with PTSD/Trauma and the military. Not only am I the daughter of a Vietnam Veteran, I was also married to an active duty member (and Iraq/Afghanistan Veteran) for over 20 years. For 3 years, I volunteered at the Warrior Transition Battalion at Fort Riley, Kansas providing yoga therapy, meditation, and other holistic treatments to the soldiers, family members, and staff. After seeing others struggle, and having my own personal struggles with trauma/PTSD, I was inspired to create the Trauma Healing Yoga Therapy Program. As a Yoga Therapist and founder of the Trauma Healing Yoga Therapy Program, I guide others in the use of effective, science based yoga therapy and other holistic techniques for the management/healing of symptoms relating to PTSD and trauma for people who want to control their PTSD - not allow it to control them. Recently, I have focused my efforts to working with women who have been sexually traumatized to help them heal their PTSD (and other trauma related issues) with yoga therapy. As a 2x rape survivor, I intimately understand the needs these women face, and help them navigate their healing journeys. I earned my 200 RYT, 500 RYT and was awarded my Certification in Yoga Therapy from the International Association of Yoga Therapy. Additionally, I have completed a 120 Hour YogaFit Warriors training and the MBSR (Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction) online course through the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. Currently a student with the Phoenix Rising School of Yoga Therapy, I'm learning another approach to utilizing yoga to help release trauma from the body. I work with people with all types of physical conditions, however, I specialize in working with those suffering from PTSD, TBI's and all trauma-related issues and have been for over the past 5 years.  The Trauma Healing Yoga Therapy

In this week's episode Laura and Todd welcome back Joelle Maletis, PTSD & Trauma Expert, LMFT, TED-Ed Video Author, Speaker, CEO and Coach to talk about Burnout. Joelle is focused on helping others to create a meaningful and balanced life. We can all relate to feeling stressed out from time to time, but what's the difference between just feeling stressed and true “burnout?” In this episode we take a deep dive in to the signs of burnout, the difference between good and “prolonged” bad stress, and the physical symptoms and effects of burnout. Joelle emphasizes the importance of giving ourselves time to rest, something easier said than done, but as she warns, if we don't address the issue it could turn into something much more sinister like heart problems, an anxiety disorder or fibromyalgia. We also discuss the different forms of burnout such as toxic friendships, caretaking and compassion fatigue, and parenting burnout, the difference between guilt and shame and how and when you know it's time to “let go.” Ultimately, Joelle teaches us some ways to prevent burnout before it happens and again, gives us all the reasons why it's OK TO TAKE A BREAK! Content Warning: Detailed sexual assault memories and related trauma discussionOur bodies absorb every experience we have. These experiences can manifest in our bodies mentally, emotionally, and physically. So when we suffer a traumatic event, how does that resonate in our bodies? And how can we heal from those resonating responses? I'm joined today by Yoga Therapist and Founder of the Trauma Healing Yoga Therapy Program, Anissa Hudak. Anissa and I talk about PTSD from trauma and how those memories live in us and return unbidden. Most importantly, Anissa shares how to process that trauma and how to walk a healing journey.  Anissa and I each share personal stories of sexual assault and triggered traumatic memories as ways to really dig into Anissa's processes surrounding healing. She explains where trauma lives in the body and brain, how it might look physically, and how PTSD draws on those memories. She details the differences between yoga and yoga therapy and links the physicality of yoga to the ability to heal the body's trauma. Currently, a student with the Phoenix Rising School of Yoga Therapy, I'm learning another approach to utilizing yoga to help release trauma from the body. I work with people with all types of physical conditions, but I specialize in working with those suffering from PTSD, TBI's and all trauma-related issues and have been for over the past 5 years. The work I do with women who have been sexually traumatized (rape, sexual assault or abuse) is the most important to me. As a 2x rape survivor, I intimately understand the needs these women face, and help them navigate their healing journeys. Healing from PTSD takes more than talk therapy and meds! Since PTSD starts in the body, we must release it from the body to achieve a more complete healing - this is where the yoga therapy comes in! I'm all about education, empowerment & advocating for oneself. When I became educated about PTSD and learned why I emotionally reacted certain ways and why my body physically reacted in certain ways, I then had the choice - I didn't have to react those ways if it wasn't serving me (it usually wasn't). That choice - being able to decide how I wanted to (or not) react to certain situations was very empowering. With education and empowerment to back me, I was then able to advocate for myself to get my needs better served and help heal from my experiences and PTSD. I'm not "cured" (I don't think anyone can really say that in this situation), but I have more control and better management of my PTSD. This healing journey is a lifelong marathon. 1 in 4 women are a survivor of some type of negative sexual experience. My mission is to educate women, so they too will feel empowered to advocate for themselves. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/bhsales/message

Talk therapy can be a valuable resource, but what happens when you're all talked out and still feel your body is holding onto trauma? This is where teacher's assistant Lara Connolly found herself after years of trying talk therapy and never feeling like it was quite enough to help alleviate her physical exhaustion and stress. It wasn't until she tried EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing), a form of psychotherapy designed to alleviate the distress caused by traumatic memories, that she finally started to feel her body come back to life.    Looking back, Lara can see how much shame and rejection was stored in her body after a lifetime of having untreated ADHD and how significantly it had been impacting her emotional regulation and physical health. Lara not only took the steps to heal her trauma, but she also made real changes to her lifestyle that provide more balance and prioritize joy; her dedication to living an authentic ADHD life is truly inspiring and I'm delighted to bring you this conversation. So basically I noticed a thing I was doing that I didn't like + did not want it to continue happening. This episode is me vocally processing my experience as I walked through it a little bit.  I notice myself (self awareness) doing things sometimes that I am not consciously choosing for myself (programming). My goal is to switch the things I don't like into things I do like. In this example it is something a little deeper than the regular flipping of my internal script so I wanted to invite you along for the ride.  Just that single act of me expressing what was going on + choosing to make peace with it did just dat.  I am no longer experiencing those crazy feelings that I was when I recorded this episode last week.  I think it is wild how that works.  The part that is even more wild is that I totally freaking forgot about it. Like the whole thing.  That I was feeling those things. That I recorded this as part of processing it. That I had all of those experiences that had me in a funk in the first place.  I only remembered when I found this recording in my phone. That is what I call healing Bitch! MAKE YOUR PEACE TRIBE!  The longer you refuse to see something, the longer you suppress, the longer you carry it with you.  I choose to let that shit go + move on with my life.  There really is no other way.  Love ya   ps. you can do it.   As always HERE are all the links you need to find your girl.

Today is the beginning of a short series on trauma. Before you click away or skip ahead, please, please hear me out on why this applies to every single one of you and why awareness of trauma is so important. If trauma doesn't affect you directly — if you somehow managed to have such a mega-privileged life that trauma hasn't affected you — then you need to keep listening so that you can grow your awareness for the sake of your family and friends. I decided to do this now because we need more conversations about trauma, being trauma-informed, trauma-responses, generational trauma, the difference between mental illness and mental injury due to trauma, and how all of these things related to health. They relate to autoimmune issues. Trauma is stored in the body. I felt that this topic is urgent right now is because of all the trauma surrounding racism, oppression, civil rights, discrimination, and I think it's safe to say that right now a significant percentage of the US and maybe even the world has experienced trauma bubbling to the surface and spilling over as a lot of people are passionately taking action to stand up for what's right and be part of the change to begin to heal part of trauma that has been carried on for generations.   What else you'll learn in this episode: • Trauma and racist murders like George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbury and many others • Acknowledging the trauma that's happening along with the rightful uprising of the Black Lives Matter movement • COVID, trauma and race • Why I need you to hear all of this no matter what your race is • Trauma is trauma is trauma. Why we need to do better at not dismissing it • What dismissive language about trauma sounds like • Examples of trauma to identify in your own life • Types of trauma (Big T trauma, Little T trauma, racial trauma, birth trauma, and ancestral/generational trauma) • PTSD and trauma Please subscribe and leave a review for the show! After seeing others struggle, and having my own personal struggles with trauma/PTSD, I was inspired to create the Trauma Healing Yoga Therapy Program. As a Yoga Therapist and the founder of the Trauma Healing Yoga Therapy Program, I work with women who have been sexually traumatized to help them heal their PTSD (and other trauma related issues) with yoga therapy. As a 2x rape survivor, I intimately understand the needs these women face, and help them navigate their healing journeys. I have earned my 200 RYT, 500 RYT and was awarded my Certification in Yoga Therapy from the International Association of Yoga Therapy.
