In this episode, I'm joined by Anne Devereux-Mills, former CEO of ad agencies and founder of Parlay House, to discuss the bold and boundary-pushing choices Anne made in her career and beyond. Anne shares how she navigated the male-dominated executive suite as CEO of ad agencies, taking risks to draw lines between her work and family life, even when it went against the norms. She opens up about the difficult, vulnerable conversations she had to have -- calling out inappropriate behavior from powerful colleagues, discussing personal health challenges, and confronting its aftermath. But Anne's biggest risk-taking may have been inviting 12 complete strangers into her home to have the kind of raw and real conversations that are forbidden in the workplace. This leap of faith led to the creation of Parlay House (full disclosure: I'm a member of Parlay House), a community that empowers women to shed their work personas and connect on a deeper, human-to-human level. Learn more about Parlay House here: https://parlayhouse.com/Follow Anne on Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/annedevmills/Follow Parlay House on Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/parlay.house/Text me your thoughts on this episode!Enjoy the show? SUMMARY For more than 20 years, Heather Lende has written obituaries for the Chilkat Valley News in the tiny town of Haines, Alaska. Now, the New York Times bestselling author weaves her own life lessons together with recollections of the deceased. And we get Find the Good: Unexpected Lessons from a Small-Town Obituary Writer, a gentle, insightful memoir mixed with humor and sensitivity. More than a storyteller, Lende is a “story catcher” who knows the challenge of describing life with words that both honor the dead and bless the living. But she manages well. "Find the Good" reminds us all to live more gratefully by seeing life through the lens of optimism. 00:25   Intro to author Heather Lende from Haines, Alaska 01:25   Obituary writers describe a life in 500-600 words 01:30   Lende’s mantra: “Find the good.” 02:00   Writing our own obituaries, every day 02:25   Unpacking the title, “Find the Good” 03:45   Countering sadness 04:15   Lende’s career begins in 1996 05:45   Characteristics and qualifications of a good obituary writer 07:45   Be a “story catcher” 08:45   Who approves obituaries? 11:00   Lende’s own brush with death changes everything 12:20   Recovery breeds empathy and gratitude 12:45   Wounds, seen and unseen 14:00   Deaths hit close to home 15:00   “I’m just the chronicler of these tragedies,” trying to give families hope 15:40   Using her art to make a difference and move hearts 16:30   Lende faces her own grief with unwed daughter’s pregnancy 17:00   “Draw lines in the sand so you can move them.” 17:45   Wisdom from an elderly Southern lady 19:00   Sometimes the “Big Worry” isn’t a worry at all 19:40   “Practice staggered breathing” 20:25   Life lessons from choir metaphors 22:00   “Writing obituaries is my way of transcending the bad news.” 22:25   The story of Richard Boyce, a fisherman lost at sea 24:45   The power of a father’s love 25:20   Story of Russ, the town cemetery gardener 26:00   A long-lost son returns, dies, and gives his home to hospice 27:00   The power of simple greeting cards and the family Bible 28:32   The story of Rene—writing a pre-death obituary for a breast-cancer victim 29:02   What would you do with your remaining days? 30:42   Quantity vs. quality of life 30:59   Everyday blessings 31:20   Life’s two greatest regrets 31:45   Longing for small-town living 32:10   The downsides of small-town living 34:05   Navigating “spiritual boot camp” 35:00   Nurturing the skill of “finding the good” 35:20   Hearts turn to stone, but stones also turn to hearts 36:15   The story of Vic—proof people can change 37:15   How to get a good obituary 37:45   Who will write Lende’s obituary? 38:30   The immediate value of an obituary 39:10   What Lende hopes her readers feel 39:40   How to create small towns anywhere QUOTES FROM LENDE "If indeed all the wisdom I had in my heart was to be summed up in final words and it was difficult to speak more than, say, three, what would I rasp before my soul flew up the chimney? Find the good. I surprised myself with this pretty great notion. Find the good. That’s enough. That’s plenty. I could leave my family with that." "Awful events are followed by dozens and dozens of good deeds. It’s not that misery loves company, exactly; rather, it’s that suffering, in all its forms, and our response to it, binds us together across dinner tables, neighborhoods, towns and cities, and even time. Bad doings bring out the best in people." "I have a friend who says we spend the first half of our life building it and the second half preventing it from falling apart. I’d rather be under construction when I die." “We are all writing our own obituary every day by how we live. The best news is that there’s still time for additions and revisions before it goes to press.” "The invisible part of a mother’s heart is the strongest and most flexible because it enlarges with each child and grandchild. Rather than divide the heart’s chambers into smaller rooms as the family grows, love multiplies them." "No matter how many obituaries I write, I will never get used to talking to someone one day and learning that they’ve left town, and the entire planet, the next. It may not shock me the way it does others, but that doesn’t make it any easier. There is no good in missing someone so badly you can’t even hum." SUMMARY  Anne Devereux-Mills, once a powerful New York advertising executive, captures her story of creating authentic female connections in her book, “The Parlay Effect: How Female Connection Can Change the World.” After experiencing a “trifecta of setbacks”—losing her job, health, and last child (to college)—Devereux-Mills found herself in a new city with no real female friends. Tired of transactional relationships, she was hungry for “four quarters instead of a hundred pennies.” So, she invited complete strangers into her home for food and conversation, and Parlay House was born. In her words, Anne “set out to replicate [the] magic of growth through difference—and to do it by building a community of women. Ideally, the organization I envisioned would include a wide-ranging group of dynamic women and provide a safe place for us to gather, laugh, relax, talk about important ideas and, for at least a few hours every month, put ourselves first, something women rarely do. I wanted to explore this idea of self-expansion.” KEY TERMS Parlay – to speak; a bet where the stakes are higher when you’re doing it together with others Parlay House – an inclusive series of in-person and digital gatherings for women that fosters authentic connections and supportive relationships, especially for women at inflection points and crossroads The Parlay Effect – goodness transferred one-to-one then often multiplied exponentially as people observe positive acts and begin to pass them on; an action from one person to another amplified and replicated at an exponential level that generates the hope that small actions can truly be part of a significant cascade of good One Small Thing – a single act of kindness Cascading – when one small thing triggers multiple empathetic acts QUOTES FROM DEVEREUX-MILLS “When I lost power, I lost connections, and I didn’t want to have relationships that were based on transactions.” “Empowered by other women, women don’t just pay it forward; they pay it outward.” “I have a personal saying that goes like this: ‘We are stronger when we are connected.’ This is what inspired me to create the community of Parlay House. It taught me that the company of other women helps me to feel grounded, fulfilled and empowered.”  BUY The Parlay Effect: How Female Connection Can Change the World RECOMMENDATION To find how and where women are connecting with other women, check out the Parlay House website. Anne shares about some major shifts in her life--a recurrence of cancer, losing an executive position, her last daughter off to college--all at the same time. She was questioning herself and as a result created a program, an on-going event called "Parlay House". It is an experience of women getting together at someone's home, to discuss a topic, to have a speaker, to have the change of getting in touch with ourselves, and doing so in a connected way. Having a supportive community full of inspirational people surrounding you can be the difference between success and failure. You can find your community online, through social networks, but it’s even better to find a group local to you to get that inspiration face-to-face. Today’s guests, SC Moatti, Darryl Grant, Anne Devereux-Mills, are all founding members of women’s communities who find great comfort and support within their groups. SC Moatti is a technology visionary, entrepreneur, and investor. She founded Mighty Capital, a tech company based in Silicon Valley, and Products That Count, one of the largest networks for product makers in the world. Her companies focus on creating products that people love. Darryl Grant was born and raised in Harlem, NYC, and has 20 siblings! Through his involvement in the Merrill Corporation, he founded Inspiring Connectivity, a community of C-level executive women based in San Francisco. Darryl takes his inspiration from his mother, Eloise Grant, who raised hundreds of children and mentored dozens of women, sometimes in the middle of the night. Anne Devereux-Mills is a driving force behind making change possible and showing women where to start. She’s the founder of Parlay House, a national affiliation of thousands of diverse and inspirational women. Anne praises collaboration over competition and believes that women are oftentimes guilty of rejecting other women. In this episode, we’re talking about the power of social communities, how these leaders have built their groups, what value they have, and how other members have received support from within. You can absolutely bring a group together and embrace the resulting empowerment, and each leader explains how they’ve cultivated that for themselves. We discuss what it’s like to nurture and advise young women, and transferring these skills to working with business executives across a diverse range of industries. Establishing relationships among your community is vital to creating a harmonious environment that promotes support and inclusivity, as well. Community relies on strong leadership and consistency in order to grow and develop trust. Everyone wants more community, the key is finding people that actually inspire you. Do you have a community of powerful women who support you? How have you embraced all the ups and downs that life has given you? When is the last time you met up with a local person who inspires you? In This Episode: How to reframe what’s important in your life after everything changes How you can bring a group of diverse women together to embrace empowerment What it’s like being an advisor to young women Why you need to build and nurture relationships across the board How you can build a network full of support and trust Why you need to run events on a consistent schedule in order to build community Why you need to embrace both the highs and lows that come on your journeys Why it’s more important to meet the people that inspire you, rather than the people who just bolster your numbers   Quotes: “There’s so much judgment in this world. So many times that women reject other women, either because they’re competitive with them or they don’t feel they’re right for a job, that I didn’t want to cultivate a place of rejection or encourage a choice to be included.” (8:24) “I think so many of us that are successful want to present ourselves as perfect, whether it’s on social media, or in our work lives, or to our families and not wanting to show that there are struggles. And the fact that we can create these environments where people who you might view as role models are saying ‘here’s what was really going on behind the scenes’... it makes everyone not feel alone when they have their own struggles.” (11:53) “Find your tribe, surround yourself with great people, focus on one thing that matters, and find others that want to be part that with you.” (35:55) “Sometimes trying and failing is more insightful than trying and succeeding.” (42:23) “Continue to be ambitious in your dreams and reshape that image in the mirror. Always evolve. Anchor yourself in what you want to be and continue to reach for that. No matter what the people around you say.” (55:24)   Links Find Anne Devereaux-Mills on | Find Parlay House | | |   Find SC Moatti on | | Find Mighty Captial | | | Find Products That Count | | |   Find Darryl Grant on Find Toppan Merrill |   Follow Monica on | | |

DIALOGUE PRIME TIME PRESENTS Author Anne Devereux-Mills joins host Susan Wingate on Thursday, Dialogue Prime Time when she talks about her latest book, The Parlay Effect: How Female Connection Can Change the World ABOUT THE AUTHOR Anne Devereux-Mills is a seasoned connector, speaker, author and advocate who spent the first half of her career building and running advertising agencies in NYC as Chairman and CEO. When hit with progressing cancer, she took time to reassess her career and hierarchy of needs. In 2012, before the #MeToo movement, she founded Parlay House, a salon-style series of gatherings which includes over 5,000 women across the globe. She is committed to issues about inclusion and empowerment. Beyond Parlay House, Anne works with SHE-CAN an organization that mentors next generation female leaders coming from post-genocide countries. ABOUT THE BOOK In The Parlay Effect-How Female Connection Can Change the World, Anne Devereux-Mills uses her insights as Founder of Parlay House to show how small actions can create a cascade of positive change, in your life and in the lives of others. When cancer stripped her of everything that had been her identity, she set out on a path to rediscover herself and recreate her life. Recognizing that she was missing authentic relationships that were not based on what she “did” for a living, but what she cared about as a person, in 2012 she founded Parlay House, a now-international series of salons that brings together diverse groups of women to talk about topics they rarely discuss. As the gatherings grew, she saw how they triggered small actions among participants and resulted in waves of connection and support well beyond the live gatherings. She dubbed that cascade “The Parlay Effect.” https://www.amazon.com/Anne-Devereux-Mills/e/B081VTCNXC/

Do you ever sense that authentic connections have gone missing in your life? Do you feel sometimes as though your unique identity has been swept away by the tides of work and family? Do you hear the call to effect positive change in the world but can't find a place to start? You are not alone. Just shy of her 50th birthday, former advertising agency CEO Anne Devereux-Mills lost her health to cancer, her last child to college and her job to the recession. Stripped of everything that had comprised her self worth, she set out on a path to rediscover her identity and recreate her life. Realizing that she was missing relationships that were based on what she cared about as a person rather than what she did for a living, Devereux-Mills started a series of salons in 2012 that would gather together diverse groups of women based on topics they all cared about. She called the series Parlay House, and as the gatherings grew and expanded in cities across the world, she saw that they triggered a series of micro-actions among the participants. The result was a cascading wave of connection, support and strength that flowed out from the gatherings and into the wider world. She dubbed that cascade “the Parlay effect.” In her forthcoming book, The Parlay Effect: How Female Connection Can Change the World, Devereux-Mills tells the story of Parlay House and uses her insights as its founder to show how small actions can result in a meaningful boost in self-awareness, confidence and vision. Woven through the book are the findings of research that Devereux-Mills conducted in collaboration with Dr. Serena Chen, a tenured professor of social psychology at UC Berkeley who investigated the social science behind the Parlay effect. The result is a book that offers a vision and a method for anyone who is going through a life transition and who wants to find and create communities that have positive and multiplying effects. Witches in various guises have been with us for centuries, and they are notorious shape-shifters. In both spiritual culture and pop culture, they've changed from diabolical villains to empowered heroines as women and femmes have sought more autonomy in their own lives. In celebration of her spellbinding book Waking the Witch: Reflections on Women, Magic, and Power, Pam Grossman will delve into why witches matter, how they reflect our fear and love of feminine power, and what they can teach us during this age of profound transformation. Grossman will be joined by CEO, entrepreneur and documentary film executive Anne Devereux-Mills, founder of Parlay House, for this evening of feminist magic and bewitching conversation. The show is on hiatus for the summer, so I’m digging into the archives for some great episodes from the recent past. On today’s show, which aired in June of last year, Anne Devereux-Mills, founder of Parlay House, Executive Director of the Emmy-nominated The Return, and Chairwoman of the Board of Marchex, Inc. shares how starting over led her to look at how we—and women, in particular—can not only have deeper, more meaningful interactions but how they can have an inspiring, empowering cascade effect on others.

Anne’s mission is to share what she has learned through her own experience: recognize one's own strengths and skills – and use them to help other women, creating an outward moving circle of positive change, and, in the process, empowering yourself. Capping a 25-year career as one of the most influential women in the advertising industry, in 2012 Anne founded Parlay House, (@ParlayHouse on Twitter)c an expanding national salon-style gathering of 1500 women who meet to pull each other forward through a combination of shared experiences, meaningful content, and peer-to-peer connections. She has been a mentor for SHE-CAN, an organization supporting and grooming the next generation of female world leaders coming from post-genocide countries, and served as the director of Stanford University's Healthy Body Image Programs. She was the Executive Director of The Return, an Emmy-nominated documentary about the experience of people returning to society post-incarceration. She and her husband were the lead sponsors of California’s Proposition 36, which restored fairness in sentencing to the State’s excessive Three Strikes Law. I’m so excited to bring you this conversation with someone who has quite literally welcomed me into her home to learn, refresh, and connect with other women... accomplished entrepreneur, social justice advocate, sought after speaker, and a community builder at heart, Anne Devereux-Mills. Capping a 25-year career as one of the most influential women in the advertising industry, in 2012 Anne founded Parlay House, a now international salon-style gathering of over 4,000 women who meet to pull each other forward through a combination of shared experiences, meaningful content, and peer-to-peer connections.  In addition, alongside raising her two daughters as a single mother, becoming a sponsor to a young woman from Cambodia and then a stepmother to two stepsons,  Anne has achieved some remarkable things.  She’s been a mentor for SHE-CAN, an organization supporting and grooming the next generation of female world leaders coming from post-genocide countries, and served as the director of Stanford University's Healthy Body Image Programs. She was the Executive Director of The Return, an Emmy-nominated documentary about the experience of people returning to society post-incarceration. And she and her husband were the lead sponsors of California’s Proposition 36, which restored fairness in sentencing to the State’s excessive Three Strikes Law. At the heart of it all has been a deep abiding belief in authentic, non-transactional relationships, social justice, and the power of women to women connections. I felt Anne’s generosity, perspective, and wisdom throughout our conversation and found so many of the lessons Anne has learned resonating for me, from discerning where our presence is most needed with our children, to learning to release perfectionism.  Synchronistically, so many things I'm grappling with in my life, Anne shined light on in this conversation. I was reminded that small acts can have meaningful cascades of impact, that we can hold a vision for an epic life rooted in connection and what really matters, not in having it all exactly right or at exactly the same time. And I gained a heightened awareness and appreciation for “Inflection points,” those times in our lives when we’re called to change our course or as Anne says “the moment after what was but before what will be.”  I hope you’ll enjoy this conversation as much as I did and leave feeling more empowered to build authentic connections, stay patient during your “inflection points” and take your own first small acts toward meaningful impact.  Much appreciation, P.S. If you love thoughtful conversation and inspiring other women, then today's podcast is for you. Anne Devereux Mills is the founder of the Parlay House, a salon-style gathering of more than 500 women in the San Francisco Bay Area. Members of the group meet once a month to connect, learn and inspire. Each meeting features a discussion on an interesting topic. The goal of Parlay, Anne says, is to change the framework of reciprocity by putting women in a place to pull fellow women forward, rather than creating a setting where women have a more transaction-like "you help me, I help you" interaction. Another goal of Anne's is to create a level playing field for all ages and professions saying, "If you talk [to another person] about what you do, you miss the commonalities." At a recent event, she shares that many women opened up about their eating disorders, depression and other big topics.  Anne also serves as chair of the board of a public company and serves as chief strategy officer of Lantern, a San Francisco-based startup that uses technology to create mental wellness programs that reduce stigma and improve access to lower cost for mental health treatment. She also is the executive producer of The Return, an Emmy-nominated film that focuses on our criminal justice system and the impact of the "Three Strikes" law. And as part of her passion for social justice issues, Anne worked as a key member of the team that helped pass California's Proposition 36, which was a part of California's "Three Strikes" reform. While she was working toward these accomplishments, Anne built her career while raising two daughters as a single mom in the New York area. Before her current roles, Anne served in C-level positions at various advertising agencies, including BBDO, TBWAChiat Day and LLNS, focusing on health care. In episode 53 of I Want Her Job: The Podcast, Editor and Host Polina Selyutin talks to Anne about she of the practices that have led to her success, personal sacrifice, the life-changing events that led her from New York to San Francisco and the inspiration for Parlay House.

Anne Devereux-Mills is an incredibly accomplished human. She was the chairman and CEO of a number of ad agencies in New York City – which is a massive undertaking. She then transitioned from the corporate world to non-profit programs such as helping start a school in Uganda. She’s had a phenomenal life journey and faced many obstacles -- including being a single mom of two while battling cancer. Anne is now the Chief Strategy Officer for Lantern, a San Francisco based start up that brings mental wellness programs to underserved populations due to the stigma of mental health, access and cost. She is also the founder of Parlay House, a salon-style gathering of over 800 Bay-area women who meet to pull each other forward through a combination of shared experiences, meaningful content and peer-to-peer connections I wanted to connect with Anne to better understand how she's been able to do so much in her life – not just in one arena, but so many arenas. As a single mom parenting, running a business in a male dominated industry, blazing trails in Uganda, battling cancer-- all of that is just an incredible effort and she’s been able to it in a world class way. I hope you'll be reminded from this conversation how important authenticity is -- and how important relationships are -- and how important it is to take risks and do the hard work.
