In this episode, I'm joined by Anne Devereux-Mills, former CEO of ad agencies and founder of Parlay House, to discuss the bold and boundary-pushing choices Anne made in her career and beyond. Anne shares how she navigated the male-dominated executive suite as CEO of ad agencies, taking risks to draw lines between her work and family life, even when it went against the norms. She opens up about the difficult, vulnerable conversations she had to have -- calling out inappropriate behavior from powerful colleagues, discussing personal health challenges, and confronting its aftermath. But Anne's biggest risk-taking may have been inviting 12 complete strangers into her home to have the kind of raw and real conversations that are forbidden in the workplace. This leap of faith led to the creation of Parlay House (full disclosure: I'm a member of Parlay House), a community that empowers women to shed their work personas and connect on a deeper, human-to-human level. Learn more about Parlay House here: https://parlayhouse.com/Follow Anne on Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/annedevmills/Follow Parlay House on Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/parlay.house/Text me your thoughts on this episode!Enjoy the show? Sharon Kan is the CEO & Co-Founder at Pepperlane, a start-up that helped mothers transform their ideas, skills, and passions into businesses that fit into their busy lives. They raised millions with her brilliant concept. Alas, like so many others, COVID had a massive negative impact on her business, and she had to make the difficult decision to shut it down earlier this year. In my conversations, I'm keenly aware of survivorship bias—that only talking to people who've won the lottery can give us a false impression about what it's like to play the lottery. Or as Mitch Hedberg said: “You know when you see an advertisement for a casino, and they have a picture of a guy winning money? That's false advertising, because that happens the least. That's like if you're advertising a hamburger, they could show a guy choking. “This is what happened once.”” Today we talk about life after a start-up, and how this unpleasant aspect of the journey led to Sharon finding a new voice and a new passion. Now she's mentored hundreds of women CEOs and business owners, and she's building a new life behind the scenes. If you've ever tried to build something ambitious, this episode is for you. ➡️ https://www.linkedin.com/in/sharon2016/ ➡️ Highlights: https://rosspalmer.com/sharon-kan ➡️ Follow me on Instagram: @therosspalmer ➡️ Subscribe on YouTube: @therosspalmer

Blessed to interview a true leader and someone who stands for courage, and really means it. Jennifer Sey doesn't just tweet about courage but then hide behind her desk like many of the "pretend leaders," and "influencers" out there today. She does what is right, not what is easy.Jennifer Sey was on track to become the first woman CEO of Levi Strauss & Co. As the President of the Levi's brand, she was widely celebrated as a versatile and inspirational leader who had helped save the iconic brand from bankruptcy. Formerly a self-described "left of left of center" progressive, she was beloved as the embodiment of the company's "profits through principles" ethos. But everything changed when Sey publicly opposed the closure of San Francisco's public schools at the height of the pandemic. In response to her 'wrongthink, ' management gave her a choice: shut up or leave. She decided that defending at-risk children was more important than the job that she loved, and so she resigned. After more than two decades at the company, she gave up her professional future in order to retain her voice. Sey was also a U.S. National Gymnastics champion but quit after years of abuse, torture, bulimia, and more, which discusses in her first book, Chalked Up.  As the highest-profile executive to fall victim to the cancel culture engulfing America, her story is an inspiration for all those who, in these difficult times, feel pressured to remain silent on their most fundamental beliefs. The more Americans who stand up to "woke-ism," the better chance we have at creating a truly equitable and inclusive society. Principles and integrity matter. Ultimately, they matter more than anything else. Go grab her new book for the full story, Levi's Unbuttoned: The Woke Mob Took My Job But Gave Me My Voice.

Listeners, we are back this week with Saskia Sorrosa. Saskia Sorrosa is a proud immigrant, and founder & CEO of Fresh Belies, the first-ever savory kid brand to launch using real ingredients serving “veggies as veggies and fruits as fruits” seasoned with herbs and spices commonly found in Latin American kitchens. Born in Ecuador, Sorrosa moved to the States at seventeen to attend George Washington University. After starting a family, she became hyper aware of the high sugar and high sodium snack choices that permeated grocery shelves. In response to the lack of options and with a desire to raise her children with flavors she grew up enjoying in Ecuador, Saskia created a brand that made healthy eating more authentically flavorful and uniquely delicious: Fresh Bellies. Since 2016 Saskia has grown Fresh Bellies into a national disruptor with Fresh Bellies being ranked among the top 5 natural toddler snacks in the country. Currently the snacks are sold in 5,000 stores throughout the U.S., including retail giants like Target, Sprouts, Walmart and Whole Foods. Fresh Bellies has won Expo East NEXTY Award for Best New Natural Kid's Product, and Saskia graduated from the Stanford Latino Business Action Network (LBAN) cohort! Why do the analytical self and the intuitive self need to work in concert with each other?3. Why it's good that we're not all driven by a want for productivity.4. The Universe really does have your back -- a mindset approach to alignment.5. The importance of grief.6. The importance of practicing self-compassion.7. Best practices for cultivating creative relationships.8. Erica's wish for anyone who is cultivating meaningful change in their lives.Quotes: It's all a grand experiment anyway. And that's what I say in all my classes, especially when I'm directing, I'm like you guys, this is a grand experiment. We might just fail. And if we fail, it's my fault. You can blame me a hundred percent. And if we win, it's all your credit. All I'm there to do is set up the whole tone that it's an experiment. That's how I run the company. I think everyone's creative.  I don't think you can be human without being creative. I think it's a muscle and sometimes people don't use it a lot and sometimes people use it, so, so, so much. But creativity  is a part of the world. I mean, it literally is, is why we exist today… creativity doesn't mean necessarily art, but creative thinking, creative solutions. Creative doodling!I am such a believer that the universe has your back that I don't know how to operate other than that. And when I don't believe that, when there's the day or the weeks that I go through and I'm like, it just doesn't seem like it. It's just like, it's like digging a hole. And as soon as I just go back to that core belief, it's all going to be fine. It's a grand experiment and the universe has my back and everyone in my life too. And  it doesn't just apply to me. The universe has OUR backs. It takes an entire group of sometimes hundreds and hundreds, if not thousands of people to create one project. And I just think that it's incredible and people at the top of their game, in their very specific focus of their art and they're contributing… that's why it's movie magic to me. That's movie magic. It's not because they're falsifying a fake background and you believe it. The magic is that all these creatives come together full of unbelievable talent and joy and craft and all commit to one specific creative idea and then create. That's crazy. It's like building pyramids.Important LinksIG, twitter, Facebook: @arvoldofficial Arvold.
