Acupuncturist, Sound Healing Practitioner, and Grief Guide at Joy Alchemy Acupuncture, Annie McDonnell is a special soul. Join us for this Dear Future Self conversation, you'll be glad you did! "Dear Future Self, I love you like a mother loves her child. I've done my best to create opportunities for you to experience more ease, health, and joy and have happy memories to look back upon. Enjoy! Enjoy your life (enjoy our life). When you're feeling lonely or afraid, remember that I'm here with you and you have my boundless love, strength, and support. I'm so excited to see what you do next and celebrate your continued evolution." –Annie McDonnell What if you could predict your future? Does this seem too good to be true? It can be done. All it takes is using your mind to give thought to how you want your future to look. What is it that you want to see? How do you want to be and how do you want your life to go? These questions can be answered by you! This isn't about manifesting, it is about creating. If you want to be healthier, speak to your future healthy self and tell her what you are doing today to help her be healthier. Do you want to be happier? What can you tell your future self you are doing today to create a feeling of being happy? Thinner? Richer? More of something or less of anything at all? … “Dear Future Self, here's what I am doing today to support you.” In this podcast, Dear Future Self, based on the book by the same name, author Susan Axelrod, The Confidence Coach, interviews women who understand the benefit of speaking out about what they want for their lives. Why is this important? Because speaking to your future Self supports you, here and now. My guest this week is Annie McDonnell - an Australian executive with a difficult start in life followed by a 20 years career in the wine industry.  These days she's thriving in her alcohol free life and inspiring others as a Sober Coach. In this episode:- Annie's father had a drinking problem and her parents had a difficult marriage – in fact her mother left the home when Annie has just 14 Unsurprisingly Annie felt angry and abandoned and it was about this time that she discovered that alcohol which became her best friend Unsure of her career ambitions Annie chose random subjects to study at university – one of them being Viniculture which she loved She went on to join Australia's burgeoning wine industry and loved her job Of course she got to hang out with her best friend alcohol every day and a tasting at a 9am sales meeting was not unusual! Annie enjoyed this lifestyle throughout her 20's and 30's but in her 40's she crashed and burned She'd known that she had a problem with alcohol for years but just couldn't imagine life without alcohol I was the same and we agreed that it was the fear of life without our best friend alcohol that keeps us trapped I sometimes wish I had a time machine that I could put some of our new members in – those people who are struggling – scoring a few alcohol free days and then giving in to a craving.. In early sobriety its impossible to imagine just how different your life will be if you make this change Annie came up with a great analogy about rocks – she said that when you are drinking it feels like you are carrying a backpack of rocks and when you stop you put it down….and life feels so much better, so much lighter you marvel at how wrong you were to fear alcohol free living It does take a few months of hard work but then you are free and your life starts to evolve in the most extraordinary ways so people need to have faith just like my favourite MLK quote Take the first step on the staircase even if you cant see the top – if you're ready to take that first step just go to tribesober.com and hit “join our tribe” and we'll take care of the rest! Annie described her “not this” moment which came in her mid forties as a result of severe anxiety which had left her unable to drive, unable to see people or even to lift a spoon to eat some soup.. "Not this" moments come to us when we are at rock bottom, we know we just can't do this anymore Annie signed up for a 100 day challenge and felt great relief that she didn't have to think about her drinking for 100 days That's a great attitude to go into a challenge with – we have our annual 66 day challenge starting on 1st September so if you'd like to join that just go to the homepage of tribesober.com Annie and I talked about the power that we begin to feel as we become more aligned with who we really are in sobriety – we take control and no longer feel that things are just “happening” to us Like many of us who have been sober for a few years Annie felt pulled towards helping others so she trained as a Sobriety Coach and we talked about the Sacred Walk experience that she offers You can find Annie at her website powerfullysober.com, on LinkendIn of via email  annie@powerfullysober.com More Info Subscription membership – you can join up HERE. She soon launched her blog The Write Review. After she was declared permanently disabled in 2014, she devoted herself full-time to the literary community and became known as one of its best book reviewers. Annie has written articles and endorsements for authors, conducted author interviews; and consulted with authors on promotions and events. She continues to do so as her health allows. In addition, she administers the Write Review and World of the Write Review on Facebook. What makes her debut memoir Annie's Song: Dandelions, Dreams and Dogs even more remarkable is that much of it was written since Annie was told in January 2020 that she must go into hospice and was given last rites. Annie began to see the cracks in her family at 7 years old. She and her 4 siblings lived a happy life in a suburb of Melbourne, Australia, but she could feel something happening. It wouldn't be fully understood until years later when her mother revealed she was pregnant with the child of an influential man in town who was not her father. Everyone turned on her mother and she was forced to leave the family, taking Annie's sister with her when she went. Annie was left with an immense wound. She'd done everything she was supposed to. She was the good girl and still her mother left. At 25 she began a career in the wine industry. It was the perfect place to hide what would become an all-encompassing addiction that ruined her life. The alcohol took hold of everything in her life. In the later years of her addiction, she was left with panic attacks that left her unable to even hold a teacup.Today, she's recently celebrated her 3,000th day of sobriety and helps others on a journey of healing through her work with her organization Powerfully Sober where she helps people re-create and re-imagine their one extraordinary life.Episode ResourcesConnect with AnniePowerfully Sober | powerfullysober.comConnect with The Courage to ChangePodcast Website | lionrock.life/couragetochangepodcastPodcast Instagram | @couragetochange_podcastYouTube | The Courage to Change PodcastTikTok | @ashleyloebblassingamePodcast Email | podcast@lionrock.lifePodcast Facebook | @thecouragetochangepodcastLionrock ResourcesLionrock Life Mobile App | lionrock.life/mobile-appSupport Group Meeting Schedule | lionrock.life/meetings

Annie is the Author of “Annie's Song: Dandelion, Dreams & Dogs,”, Book Reviewer, Author Interviewer, Teacher, Author Consultant, and Blogger at The Write Review & Co-Owner of World of the Write Review Book Club. Annie McDonnell is one of those rare people who always look for the rainbow in the storm's wake and uses her brokenness to help others by giving her heart to innumerable causes and being candid about what she's going through in the hope that her honesty will give solace to kindred spirits. Thirsty for love, Annie breaks herself open at points only to learn the hard lesson that sometimes the love she seeks won't ever come. Your heart will warm when you see her take on life. You will laugh, cry, and be moved. In this shimmering debut-a cross-genre blend of memoir, auto-fiction, magical realism, and poetry-Annie pours out her dreams, her loves, and her hopes along with her complicated grief compounded by betrayals, medical misdiagnoses, and innumerable losses that would break most people. Her determination to live a life of love, joy, and meaning despite her great suffering shines throughout the dark themes of many of her essays and poems. Annie, who is in the end stages of Stiff Person Syndrome and has several other rare diseases, writes with raw emotion about traumas from her childhood best friend's rape and murder to her own life-altering car accident at age 19 to her decades-long odyssey through a medical system where women's symptoms are frequently dismissed, misdiagnosed, and minimized. Annie's experiential memoir, for which she's provided QR codes linking to her favorite songs throughout, allows the reader to get a hint of what it's like living suspended between this earthly existence and the afterlife. This is her love song to trauma survivors, dog lovers, and love seekers. She lives each day and night knowing that her next breath could be her last and keeps her heart focused on heaven. Grief can be a very heavy and overwhelming emotion. It can seem to live within us, its own lifeforce that can't be tamed. At times it may feel that grief may take us under or be with us forever. Yet there is more to grief than meets the eye. My guest this week, Annie McDonnell, is an acupuncturist, sound healing practitioner, and grief guide who teaches self-care practices to nurture tender hearts and cultivate resilience through the power of gentleness. Annie offers gentle and loving guidance on navigating grief, the nature of grief, common misconceptions about grief, and how to make peace with grief. In this episode, Annie and I share ideas around how grief can actually be seen as the result of powerful love and can be embraced as such with patience and kindness. We explore how struggle with grief can lead to feelings of low self worth & deep regret and how we can take steps to shift our understanding of and beliefs about grief. We also address the various types of grief, stages of grief, and what unexpected and delayed grief looks like.Annie McDonnell helps clients in virtual sessions to get unstuck, tune into their creativity, and reconnect to inner calm. In addition to a free monthly collective grief circle, she offers one-on-one Grief Care sessions. To learn more about these offerings, as well as her upcoming self-paced digital course Finding Your Way Through Grief, she invites you to visit Website: joyalchemyhealing.com @acupunctureannie on Instagram.

This is the story of Annie McDonnell who on 1 July 2022 is 3000 days, that's 8 years, powerfully sober. This episode is a celebration of Annie on her 3000th day of sobriety and an honouring of all the parts of her life, or in Annie's words 'drops in the ocean' that have lead Annie to be powerfully sober. I start this episode in so much gratitude to Annie who reads 'The Last Day', a piece of writing that speaks to the intensity of her last day of drinking that was the invitation, the gateway into her future. You don't need to be an alcoholic to listen to this episode. And equally if you have struggled just a little or a lot with anything you have been addicted to, including alcohol, I promise that you will have waves of goosebumps covering your body as you listen to Annie's words. Annie is unapologetically sober and unapologetically makes a declaration of wanting more; to see more of who she can be, more of what she can do, more around her capacity for leadership, more joy and more of a very full experience of life. Annie defines her journey to being powerfully sober as 'The Sacred Walk'. This episode is a Sacred Walk in itself. Our hope is that it will move you, deeply. :: If you feel Annie is your person to support you to re-create your life when drinking is no longer an option, you can read more of Annie's sublimely exquisite words here https://powerfullysober.com.
