263: "You can make a choice and still want to do the other thing. It's not going to be like, 'Oh, it's all gone. The desire is gone.' I think that's also a misconception because I made this choice, that means I'm all okay with it. Well, no, there are still parts of it that were fun, even though the majority of it was not fine. Let's be honest here." — Nisha PatelIn this episode, Chelsea sits down with transformative Sobriety Coach and Licensed Counselor Nisha Patel to discuss the complexities of sobriety, especially in a booze-heavy culture where drinking is deeply ingrained in socializing, dating, and celebrating. They tackle everything from the emotional and psychological rollercoasters going sober puts you on, dodging relentless peer pressure, retooling relationships, and proving that you can have a blast without ever reaching for a drink.Snippets from the episode: If you're in a business dinner or a social event, you don't have to announce your sobriety to the world. You can just say, ‘I'm on a health kick,' or ‘I don't feel like drinking tonight.' You don't owe anyone an explanation. If someone is really pushing back on your choice not to drink, I'd throw it back on them—‘Why does my decision make you so uncomfortable?' Often, it has nothing to do with you and everything to do with them. Dating sober is comical. You start realizing how much alcohol was masking genuine compatibility—or the lack of it. And yes, sober sex is different, but it's also deeper and more connected. Celebration doesn't have to mean alcohol. It could mean buying yourself your favorite dark chocolate, hosting a themed dinner with friends, or just sitting in gratitude and acknowledging your success. If you're judging people who are drinking, ask yourself: What about their behavior is triggering me? Sometimes, it's not judgment—it's just recognizing a version of yourself that you've outgrown.Sobriety is not about deprivation; it's about clarity, self-discovery, and redefining what truly brings joy and connection. Whether you're sober-curious or fully committed, this conversation is a reminder that your journey is yours alone, and it's okay to take it one day at a time.Resources: Marco Polo App Silent Book Club (A social event in Cape Town for book lovers) Dating Cards Connect with Chelsea: Website 1:1 Podcast Coaching Launch your podcast with the ultimate podcast launch course - Mic Drop! Has your drinking intensified the power struggle in your marriage?   Women who assume the role of “caregiver” to balance their partner's role as the “breadwinner” understand that staying home is a privilege.   But career moms quickly learn there's a big difference between financial support and financial power. And overtime, sacrificing your own needs because your job doesn't come with a paycheck creates a pressure cooker of anger, resentment and unhappiness.   Many of us turn to alcohol as a way to keep going. And in the beginning, it helps. The tension subsides! Our partners get to keep doing what they're doing and nothing has to change.    But exchanging your power for drink tickets eventually bites you in the ass.   In this episode, we'll discuss: How we go from being grateful for our privilege to feeling like second class citizens in our own home How to start negotiating from a place of power, regardless of past mistakes Why you need to learn how to be happy (with yourself) before you decide whether or not to get a divorce.   Are you ready to reclaim your power so you can become unfuckwithable? S11 Ep 2: From 60 Minute Makeover & A bottle of vodka a day to Sobriety Coach: Dave Wilson If you ever watched 60 Minute Makeover with Peter Andre – you may remember a lovely carpet fitter called Dave Wilson. But what we didn't see was Dave was hiding a big drinking problem and at one stage he was drinking a litre of vodka a night. Then, one day when he was 54 years old, everything changed. I'll let Dave tell you what happened but five years ago he stopped drinking and he's never looked back. He has his own podcast called One For the Road (which has around 10,000 downloads a week), he interviews celebrities, world experts and shares stories of all different people and how they've overcome their struggles. He's also written a bestselling book, he has a huge following on social media and he works a coach – helping mainly women with what he describes as grey area drinking. Dave believes we all tell ourselves a story, like he did. He could never live without drinking, he would lose his friends if he gave it up and he'd never be happy again. But it turned out the opposite happened. He didn't lose a life, he gained one. He has more friends, more adventure and more joy than he ever did when he drank. Dave believe there's always hope – and we do have the power to make change  – but this starts with changing those stories we tell ourselves, about everything, not just how much we drink. This conversation had a huge impact on me (and something very odd happened in the lead up to Dave appearing… I explain in the episode, but thank you again Universe). I hope this conversation will help you as much as it has helped me. We often wait for someone else to give us the green light to feel a certain way, to change, to be happy, to love something. In this process you may find your self defensive nd over expaplining, creating even more resitance to change. How can you be successful in sobriety without anyone else "getting It".Find out on today's show. Here are five key takeaways:Sustainable Sobriety as a Birthright: Sobriety is not a trait acquired in reaction to alcohol but a natural state of being. The perspective that sobriety is innate within, like a birthright, becomes a game-changer.Why we defer our permission: Seeking the approval of others by needing them to fully understand, is an effort to try to understand ourselves more deeply. Permission to Feel: The theme of giving oneself permission to feel, wediscusses the impact of external validation and the need to understand and honor one's emotions without over-explaining or defending.Curating a Container for Self-Exploration: The importance of creating a container, a space for self-exploration, is highlighted. The Naturally Sober Woman Program and Ignite your Vision Retreat are presented as opportunities for an immersive experience.Moving from Defensiveness to Self-Authority: Recognizing and moving away from the need to defend oneself or seek external validation is crucial. The journey involves self-awareness, curiosity, and compassion, leading to self-authority and clarity. If you have ever dreamt of running away to a tropical location to have the time and space to connect with yourself and get crystal clear on what it is you truly desire, you're going to want to join me in Mexico. Have you ever noticed that the more you try to restrict your food or alcohol intake, the more obsessed you become with what you think you can't have?   We declare war on The Craving. The sweet tooth. The pasta and bread. The nightly cocktail.    Because we think the opposite of gluttony is deprivation. So we over-correct with an all-or-nothing, black and white strategy. We're either “on the wagon” or partying like it's 1999.    But even if we manage to lose weight or stay sober, we're left with a nagging sense of dread and fear. Because being “good” feels like holding your breath. The level of discipline required isn't sustainable.    Indeed… 95 percent of people who lose weight on a diet are heavier a year later. And committing to a lifetime of sobriety makes it nine times more likely you'll binge drink in the future.   Amy Lang is the author of the best-selling book Thoughts are Habits Too: Master Your Triggers, Free Yourself from Diet Culture and Rediscover Joyful Eating. Sarah made the big, bold and brave decision to go sober over 5.5 years ago, and went on to use her insights and experience to support others on their sobriety journey. At the time of recording she was practicing as a Sobriety Coach but has since moved on to explore another professional avenue. However she still supports and is very much connected to the alcohol-free community especially through THE DRYY APP . Sarah shares her journey with so much openness, honesty, passion and vulnerability, covering so many topics including: >> How she reached the turning point to go sober and why this lifestyle choice matters to much to her >> The profound impact sobriety has had on her mental health, life choices and experience of Motherhood >> The joys and the challenges attached to being alcohol-free >> Some invaluable tips, support and wisdom for anyone that is sober-curious or ready to consider a change in their relationship with drinking. This is such an important conversation so I hope you find this a supportive and enlightening episode full of valuable reflections. She digs into the shame, societal expectations, and desire to numb out that drives many accomplished women to drink. My guest this week is Annie McDonnell - an Australian executive with a difficult start in life followed by a 20 years career in the wine industry.  These days she's thriving in her alcohol free life and inspiring others as a Sober Coach. In this episode:- Annie's father had a drinking problem and her parents had a difficult marriage – in fact her mother left the home when Annie has just 14 Unsurprisingly Annie felt angry and abandoned and it was about this time that she discovered that alcohol which became her best friend Unsure of her career ambitions Annie chose random subjects to study at university – one of them being Viniculture which she loved She went on to join Australia's burgeoning wine industry and loved her job Of course she got to hang out with her best friend alcohol every day and a tasting at a 9am sales meeting was not unusual! Annie enjoyed this lifestyle throughout her 20's and 30's but in her 40's she crashed and burned She'd known that she had a problem with alcohol for years but just couldn't imagine life without alcohol I was the same and we agreed that it was the fear of life without our best friend alcohol that keeps us trapped I sometimes wish I had a time machine that I could put some of our new members in – those people who are struggling – scoring a few alcohol free days and then giving in to a craving.. In early sobriety its impossible to imagine just how different your life will be if you make this change Annie came up with a great analogy about rocks – she said that when you are drinking it feels like you are carrying a backpack of rocks and when you stop you put it down….and life feels so much better, so much lighter you marvel at how wrong you were to fear alcohol free living It does take a few months of hard work but then you are free and your life starts to evolve in the most extraordinary ways so people need to have faith just like my favourite MLK quote Take the first step on the staircase even if you cant see the top – if you're ready to take that first step just go to tribesober.com and hit “join our tribe” and we'll take care of the rest! Annie described her “not this” moment which came in her mid forties as a result of severe anxiety which had left her unable to drive, unable to see people or even to lift a spoon to eat some soup.. "Not this" moments come to us when we are at rock bottom, we know we just can't do this anymore Annie signed up for a 100 day challenge and felt great relief that she didn't have to think about her drinking for 100 days That's a great attitude to go into a challenge with – we have our annual 66 day challenge starting on 1st September so if you'd like to join that just go to the homepage of tribesober.com Annie and I talked about the power that we begin to feel as we become more aligned with who we really are in sobriety – we take control and no longer feel that things are just “happening” to us Like many of us who have been sober for a few years Annie felt pulled towards helping others so she trained as a Sobriety Coach and we talked about the Sacred Walk experience that she offers You can find Annie at her website powerfullysober.com, on LinkendIn of via email  annie@powerfullysober.com More Info Subscription membership – you can join up HERE. Chrystal is a faith-based life coach who helps women create a fun adventurous life God designed them for! For Chrystal, alcohol used to be her best friend until it was her worst enemy. For years she used alcohol to celebrate or drown my sorrows. She thought her habits around alcohol were okay since she wasn't drinking daily. It was okay until God led her to leave the relationship she was in for almost 10 years. And at this point she was already trying to moderate, taking breaks, switching from whiskey to wine etc. but the days sober became less and less and for the first time she felt like she was losing control. So she listened to what God was saying and reached out for mentorship and support. While this journey hasn't been easy, it's been the best decision she made in life aside from deciding to follow Jesus. He has made her mess into a message, ministry and resource for those struggling in this area. She's been able to mentor women all across the states who are willing to make the switch to an alcohol free lifestyle and listen to the Holy Spirit's leading. Jesus saved Chrystal and he's called her to share this message with other women who struggle with the weekend binge. Casey McGuire Davidson grew up moving around the globe with parents that worked as US diplomats. While it provided some amazing experiences it also planted the seed that she needed to be constantly performing at a high level. Being the child of important people made it feel like she couldn't mess up.  As an adult she led a high achieving life in the corporate world and the hypervigilance from childhood continued. She found that drinking helped her deal. She was basically having a bottle of wine or more 365 days a year and was oblivious to the effects of her drinking. The signs were her 3am wakeups that she treated with Ambien and anti-anxiety medication which were actually symptoms of alcohol withdrawal. When getting pregnant with her first child, she stopped drinking and things felt like they had gotten better so the behavior moved back to the same place it had been before. It wasn't until her daughter was 2 and her son was 8 before she finally found recovery and even did so while navigating a stressful corporate job. Today Casey's a Certified Professional Life and Sobriety Coach, the creator of The Free 30-Day Guide to Quitting Drinking and the host of the top rated Hello Someday Podcast, the podcast for busy women ready to drink less + live more. Casey specializes in working with women with full calendars and overflowing to-do lists, who are doing all the things and then coming home and drinking to forget about all the things.Episode ResourcesHello Someday Coaching |hellosomedaycoaching.comConnect with CaseyInstagram |  @caseymdavidsonFacebook | @hellosomedayConnect with The Courage to ChangePodcast Website |lionrock.life/couragetochangepodcastPodcast Instagram |@couragetochange_podcastYouTube |The Courage to Change PodcastTikTok |@ashleyloebblassingamePodcast Email |podcast@lionrock.lifePodcast Facebook |@thecouragetochangepodcast

Susy and I bond over being pregnant at the same time, but lucky for us, Susy was able to come on the podcast to share her story just days before she gave birth! I learn so much about how she dealt with being diagnosed with Alopecia at such a young age to how it empowers her today! Her spiritual pregnancy is something I'm so in awe of and I was so lucky to encounter first hand. She teaches so much about her crystal healing practices, some of which I have started to practice myself as I continue on with my pregnancy story. Susy Markoe Schieffelin of The Copper Vessel is a Los Angeles-based sound healer, reiki master, Kundalini yoga teacher, and inspirational speaker who has led sound baths viewed or attended by millions of people all over the world. Susy has brought healing to employees at companies such as Google, Pandora, and Nordstrom, has played crystal bowls with notable artists including Leann Rimes and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and has been featured in publications such as WSJ, VOGUE, USA TODAY, and Los Angeles Times. Susy is known for her light-filled presence and ability to guide people towards radiant and empowered lives characterized by self-love, serenity, abundance, and joy. She is the founder of the Sound Healer's Academy, an innovative Crystal Alchemy Sound Healing and Spiritual Business Mentorship training, serves as a self-love advocate for brands, has created custom product lines, and offers deeply restorative crystal alchemy sound bath ceremonies and healing rituals both in person and online. @thecoppervessel Learn more about your ad choices. Todd Bridges steps Behind The Rope. Fresh off his epic turn on this just completed season of Celebrity Big Brother, Todd is here to mention it all. Todd holds nothing back, his now infamous eye rolls and all, to break down his own game play, Todrick Hall's game play which seems to have all of Pop Culture in a flutter, where he thinks it all went wrong for him, alliances, deception, Julie Chen, whether Todrick will now be “cancelled” in the real world, and what being in the house with two Real Housewives Cynthia Bailey and Teddi Mellencamp was like. Of course, we also deep dive into Todd's breakout role as Willis Jackson in Diff'rent Strokes - what working on that show was like, highs/lows, famous guest stars like Janet Jackson and, of course, one of the most iconic sayings in TV sitcom history, “Watcha talkin' bout Willis”. Todd opens up about life after Diff'rent Strokes ended - addiction, arrests, rock bottom and his road to recovery and sobriety which, as a result of Big Brother, has led to his new role of “Sobriety Coach” for Lamar Odom, late night Khloé Kardashian talks and all! Finally, we chat about what is next and his epic, iconic idea for a Diff'rent Strokes reboot! @todd_a_bridges @behindvelvetrope @davidyontef BONUS & AD FREE EPISODES Available at - www.patreon.com/behindthevelvetrope Brought To You By:  ELYSIUM HEALTH - www.trybasis.com/VELVET (10% Off At Checkout. I'm not kidding when I say Enneagram Nines (The Peacemakers) are well represented in my universe of relationships. My wife Anne is a Nine. My daughter Maddie is a Nine, and as you'll soon learn, a disproportionate number of my friends are Nines as well. On this week's show we decided to try something new. We invited not one but a panel of FOUR Enneagram Nines into the studio to describe what it's like to be members of the Peacemaker tribe. Why host a panel? In my experience, people learn more about different Enneagram types when they hear people who self-identify as that type talk about their lives. Why listen to me talk about a type when you can hear from folks who live it everyday? This week you'll meet four of my closest friends—Singer-songwriter Andy Gullahorn, guitarist, businessman, (and five time Grammy nominee) Randy Williams, Sobriety Coach and counselor David Hampton, and Chris Gonzalez, PhD, a Marriage and Family Therapist, and Director of the MFT program at Lipscomb University. We honestly didn't know what would happen when we stuffed me, my guest co-host Rabbi Evan Moffic, my producer Chad Michael Snavely, and four others guys into our tiny recording studio with a six pack of beer but as you'll soon hear -- it was magic. This is one of the most entertaining and enlightening shows I've ever been a part of. My panel today happens to be all men, but we've already scheduled a panel of four women to be on the show in the next few weeks and a mixed gender panel as well, so keep your eyes and ears open for those shows! Suggested Readings for Enneagram Nines: - Living Forward: A Proven Plan to Stop Drifting and Get the Life You Want, by Michael Hyatt - The 5 Second Rule: Transform Your Life with Everyday Courage, by Mel Robbins Be sure to listen to Episode 24 of The Road Back to You Podcast with Enneagram Nine Chris Gonzalez.
