What if summer didn't have to be “powered by” alcohol? In this episode, Anna Donaghey invites sobriety and life coach, Casey McGuire Davidson, to unpack why the summer and its long evenings, and sunny terrace, feels so tangled with the urge to drink. Is it really about the Aperol Spritz… or are we longing for something deeper, like freedom, nostalgia, or a younger version of ourselves?Together, they challenge the myth that summer is for “letting go” and drinking, and instead explore the possibility that these months could offer more: clarity, energy, presence, and real joy.If you're worried you'll be missing out or feel resistance to change, this episode delivers validation, surprising science, and practical ways to romanticise sobriety rather than alcohol. Here are the Highlights: 00:00 Intro: Why is summer so “loaded” with drinking?01:04 Meet Casey McGuire Davidson: podcast host & ex-corporate high-achiever04:47 How we don't realise how much we're missing by focusing on alcohol07:10 Romanticising alcohol vs. romanticising sobriety08:29 Sober travel: what's really possible when you're present10:40 The discomfort and magic of your first sober summer12:17 The “sober summer bucket list” approach13:11 Why summer is the best time to rethink your drinking habits16:42 Are we craving the drink, or a lost version of ourselves?23:42 How the drinks industry scripts our summer fantasies27:09 Alcohol's real deception: convincing us we're not enough without it28:00 “Why isn't this moment enough?” Getting honest about cravings30:15 The science behind why alcohol seems to make us happier37:09 The “joy of missing out”: freedom, energy, and real presence41:00 What's the biggest surprise on the other side?Anna's book "What Are You Thirsty For? It's Not About the Alcohol
EP249: What it means to recovery from sobriety–with Michele Hobin

It's Not About the Alcohol

When my client, Michele, told me she was going to reintroduce alcohol. I'll be honest — I was nervous. Actually, that's bullshit. I felt like a failure. She'd been sober for 10 months.  I was her sobriety coach. And at that time, I was still operating on the mindset that once an alcoholic, always an alcoholic. Because everybody knows you can't unpickle a cucumber.  But as we learn in coaching school, the client is the expert on their own lives. Telling people what they should and shouldn't do is condescending, not coaching. So I checked my own fear and anxiety and held space for her. Michele is the first client I coached with a truly open mind — where there is no “right” way to drink, no moral high ground for whoever has the most sober days, and no starting over after you have a drink. Alcohol is neutral–it's not good or bad or right or wrong. It's not the problem and it's not the solution. Working with Michele completely changed the way I think about recovery from alcohol use disorder. She is my patient zero, if you will. This experience laid the foundation for the work I do now as a mindful drinking coach. And she's here today to share her story and talk about what it's really like to learn how to trust yourself again…to heal your relationship with yourself so you don't have to worry about your relationship with alcohol. It's raw. It's honest. It's messy. And for me, it's personal — because this opened my eyes, my mind and my heart to see what's really possible when you stop using the past to predict the future.    If you are ready to get support from a community of women who are co-creating this change with intention and clarity— Click here to BOOK A DISCOVERY CALL.    Do you want help from Colleen with a situation you're struggling with? 263: "You can make a choice and still want to do the other thing. It's not going to be like, 'Oh, it's all gone. The desire is gone.' I think that's also a misconception because I made this choice, that means I'm all okay with it. Well, no, there are still parts of it that were fun, even though the majority of it was not fine. Let's be honest here." — Nisha PatelIn this episode, Chelsea sits down with transformative Sobriety Coach and Licensed Counselor Nisha Patel to discuss the complexities of sobriety, especially in a booze-heavy culture where drinking is deeply ingrained in socializing, dating, and celebrating. They tackle everything from the emotional and psychological rollercoasters going sober puts you on, dodging relentless peer pressure, retooling relationships, and proving that you can have a blast without ever reaching for a drink.Snippets from the episode: If you're in a business dinner or a social event, you don't have to announce your sobriety to the world. You can just say, ‘I'm on a health kick,' or ‘I don't feel like drinking tonight.' You don't owe anyone an explanation. If someone is really pushing back on your choice not to drink, I'd throw it back on them—‘Why does my decision make you so uncomfortable?' Often, it has nothing to do with you and everything to do with them. Dating sober is comical. You start realizing how much alcohol was masking genuine compatibility—or the lack of it. And yes, sober sex is different, but it's also deeper and more connected. Celebration doesn't have to mean alcohol. It could mean buying yourself your favorite dark chocolate, hosting a themed dinner with friends, or just sitting in gratitude and acknowledging your success. If you're judging people who are drinking, ask yourself: What about their behavior is triggering me? Sometimes, it's not judgment—it's just recognizing a version of yourself that you've outgrown.Sobriety is not about deprivation; it's about clarity, self-discovery, and redefining what truly brings joy and connection. Whether you're sober-curious or fully committed, this conversation is a reminder that your journey is yours alone, and it's okay to take it one day at a time.Resources: Marco Polo App Silent Book Club (A social event in Cape Town for book lovers) Dating Cards Connect with Chelsea: Website 1:1 Podcast Coaching Launch your podcast with the ultimate podcast launch course - Mic Drop! Has your drinking intensified the power struggle in your marriage?   Women who assume the role of “caregiver” to balance their partner's role as the “breadwinner” understand that staying home is a privilege.   But career moms quickly learn there's a big difference between financial support and financial power. And overtime, sacrificing your own needs because your job doesn't come with a paycheck creates a pressure cooker of anger, resentment and unhappiness.   Many of us turn to alcohol as a way to keep going. And in the beginning, it helps. The tension subsides! Our partners get to keep doing what they're doing and nothing has to change.    But exchanging your power for drink tickets eventually bites you in the ass.   In this episode, we'll discuss: How we go from being grateful for our privilege to feeling like second class citizens in our own home How to start negotiating from a place of power, regardless of past mistakes Why you need to learn how to be happy (with yourself) before you decide whether or not to get a divorce.   Are you ready to reclaim your power so you can become unfuckwithable? In this process you may find your self defensive nd over expaplining, creating even more resitance to change. How can you be successful in sobriety without anyone else "getting It".Find out on today's show. Here are five key takeaways:Sustainable Sobriety as a Birthright: Sobriety is not a trait acquired in reaction to alcohol but a natural state of being. The perspective that sobriety is innate within, like a birthright, becomes a game-changer.Why we defer our permission: Seeking the approval of others by needing them to fully understand, is an effort to try to understand ourselves more deeply. Permission to Feel: The theme of giving oneself permission to feel, wediscusses the impact of external validation and the need to understand and honor one's emotions without over-explaining or defending.Curating a Container for Self-Exploration: The importance of creating a container, a space for self-exploration, is highlighted. The Naturally Sober Woman Program and Ignite your Vision Retreat are presented as opportunities for an immersive experience.Moving from Defensiveness to Self-Authority: Recognizing and moving away from the need to defend oneself or seek external validation is crucial. The journey involves self-awareness, curiosity, and compassion, leading to self-authority and clarity. If you have ever dreamt of running away to a tropical location to have the time and space to connect with yourself and get crystal clear on what it is you truly desire, you're going to want to join me in Mexico. Have you ever noticed that the more you try to restrict your food or alcohol intake, the more obsessed you become with what you think you can't have?   We declare war on The Craving. The sweet tooth. The pasta and bread. The nightly cocktail.    Because we think the opposite of gluttony is deprivation. So we over-correct with an all-or-nothing, black and white strategy. We're either “on the wagon” or partying like it's 1999.    But even if we manage to lose weight or stay sober, we're left with a nagging sense of dread and fear. Because being “good” feels like holding your breath. The level of discipline required isn't sustainable.    Indeed… 95 percent of people who lose weight on a diet are heavier a year later. And committing to a lifetime of sobriety makes it nine times more likely you'll binge drink in the future.   Amy Lang is the author of the best-selling book Thoughts are Habits Too: Master Your Triggers, Free Yourself from Diet Culture and Rediscover Joyful Eating. In this episode, you'll learn: Why telling yourself “No” creates a false sense of scarcity that your brain is hard-wired to resist How to know the difference between soothing an anxious mind and nourishing your body The counter-intuitive reason accepting yourself as you are in this moment is the gateway to transformation Amy's five fundamental habits for weight loss   Follow Amy Lang on Instagram @habitwhisperer and find her book ThoughtsAreHabitsToo.com. On this week's episode of the podcast, Coach for Perfectionists, Nicole Holleman, spoke with Casey Davidson, a recovering perfectionish, sober coach and host of the Hello Someday podcast.   On this episode Casey not only got incredibly vulnerable about her own journey to sobriety and why so many high achievers turn to alcohol to cope, but also droped some MAJORLY helpful resources for fellow sober curious women.    Episode Highlights:   Casey explains why alcohol abuse is so prevalent among perfectionists, people pleasers and high achievers. She digs into the shame, societal expectations, and desire to numb out that drives many accomplished women to drink. We have an honest conversation about the problematic glorification of wine/mommy culture on social media, and why self-care shouldn't mean self-medication. Casey talks about her own rock bottom moment and what finally motivated her to get sober for good. She shares the raw, imperfect realities about early sobriety. We discuss actionable tips and resources for anyone looking to change their relationship with alcohol, including therapy, recovery books, meditation and more. Casey also provides info on her free 30-day sober challenge.   This powerful interview is a must-listen for any high achiever struggling to gain control over drinking.
