Beyond the massive protests over last year's police killing of George Floyd, a remarkable reckoning on America's troubled racial history — especially the unresolved legacy of slavery — has been very much in evidence in our area over the past many months. Case in point: William Walters and his son Henry Walters, the namesakes of the Walters Art Museumhere in Baltimore. Henry Walters’ gift to the City of Baltimore in the 1930s of the priceless collection of art that he and his father had amassed was a generous act of philanthropy, and the collection has been enjoyed and revered by millions of art lovers and scholars over the years. Last week, the Walters announced that it has revised the written history that is published on their website to reflect the fact that William Walters supported the Confederacy, and that his son, Henry supported activities that honored the Confederacy well into the 20th century. This disclosure comes in the context of at least two other area institutions, Johns Hopkins University and Hood College, where information has surfaced about their namesakes' links to slavery. Today on Midday, a conversation about ways to acknowledge and act on the symbols and stories that represent America’s long history of racism and racial inequality. Later in the program, Tom is joined on Zoom by two racial justice activists who'll share their perspectives on what should and can be done with such information. A. Adar Ayirais the principal consultant with Ayira Core Concepts, a consulting firm that provides Anti-Racism/Anti-Oppression /Equity education. Today, another edition of Midday on Business. In the city of Baltimore, the overall unemployment rate has been steadily declining over the past decade. It’s currently at 4.2 percent, down from a high of 11.8 percent in 2010 at the height of the financial crisis. By that measure, the city lags only slightly behind the Maryland and national average of 3.5%, but when viewed through the prism of racial equity, the city’s employment picture is less encouraging. According to a recent report by Associated Black Charities, African American workers in Baltimore City are largely employed in lower-wage industries and occupations, they tend to earn less than their white counterparts, and they experience higher job turnover. African Americans own nearly half of all businesses in Baltimore, but they employ only 2% of the city’s paid employees and account for only 1.4% of all sales. Joining Tom in the studio are two men whose innovative private companies are working to change those workforce dynamics, here in Baltimore and around the country. Jacob Hsu is the CEO of Catalyte, a firm that finds people with a hidden talent for technology. Jason Green is co-founder, senior vice-president and general counsel of SkillSmart US, a national enterprise that helps companies connect with local talent to create diverse and productive workforces. When actress Alyssa Milano tweeted the words Me Too, at the peak of the Harvey Weinstein sexual assault scandal last October, the response from women around the globe was immediate. In 24 hours her message had garnered tens of thousands views and shares across twitter. Me Too had become a beacon for women to rally around and share their stories of sexual abuse and harassment. To date #MeToo has been shared in over 90 countries, and has been tweeted over 6.5 million times and counting. Recently actress French Catherine Deneuve compared the campaign as a new “puritanism”, and a “witch hunt”.Celebrated Canadian author, Margaret Atwood echoed a similar sentiment about me too, and called out the lack of due process for men who are accused of these crimes. And then there is also the question of diversity. In the early moments of #metoo the movement was credited as being the brainchild of Milano, when in actuality it had actually been created years prior by a Black activist named of Tarana Burke, years before Harvey Weinstein’s assaults were brought to light. Black women like Burke and Anita Hill have long led the charge for rights for victims of sexual assault, yet the voices of Black women is oftdiminished in these conversations. Does the global movement have a diversity problem? We are joined in studio A today by A. Adar Ayira, poet, artist anti-racism facilitator and social observer.
