On the heels of girls flag football becoming a varsity sport in Frederick County, new Tuscarora High football coach and Urbana assistant principal Ryan Hines is this week's guest on the Final Score. Hines played a prominent role in helping girls flag football carve out a foothold in the area through Frederick County Parks and Recreation and the high school league last fall. He chats with Greg Swatek about the significance of it becoming a varsity sport in Frederick County Public Schools and the opportunities it will create for young girls interested in playing sports. He also talks about his desire to get back into coaching after roughly a decade of holding administrative positions at Urbana and why Tuscarora was the right opportunity for him, despite the Titans' struggles in recent seasons. How is he balancing and managing both jobs at the moment? Why would he be willing to take such a significant pay cut? How long will it take to turn the Tuscarora program around? He answers those questions and more. Prior to Hines coming on, FNP sports writers John Cannon and Alexander Dacy join Greg to discuss girls flag football as a varsity sport, the contributions of Frederick High's deaf boys basketball player, Keanu Boren, and Hood College's newly formed men's volleyball team.

With Hood men's basketball set to tip off another season as the reigning Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth champions, the team's coach, Chad Dickman, is this week's guest on The Final Score podcast. The Blazers will host the annual MMI Tip-Off Tournament at BB&T Arena this weekend, a four-team event that includes defending NCAA Division III national champion and No. 1 ranked Randolph Macon, coached by Walkersville native Josh Merkel. Dickman chats with host Greg Swatek about his longtime relationship with Merkel and hosting the top-ranked team in the country in a season-opening event. He also talks about how his team will transition away from two of its greatest players ever in Mason and Evan Wang, now that they have graduated, and why mid-range jump shots are considered bad shots. Prior to that, FNP sports writers John Cannon and Alexander Dacy join Greg to talk about the fall sports playoffs in Frederick County for high school sports. They discuss the upcoming state semifinals for boys and girls soccer, as well as the regional semifinals for football, the state-championship meet for cross country and the regional finals for volleyball.

(This conversation originally aired on April 27, 2022) Welcome to an archive edition of Midday. We're going to listen to a conversation Tom had in the spring of 2022 with Dr. Terry Anne Scott, the chair of the History Department at Hood College and a good friend of the Midday show. Dr. Scott has written a book that is as difficult as it is important. It chronicles the evolution of mob violence in Texas at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries. The NAACP has documented more than 4,700 lynchings across America from the 1880s through the 1960s. Terry Anne Scott has found evidence, in just the state of Texas, of 469 Black people, as well as 140 white people, 111 Mexicans and at least one Native American who were victims of mob violence in roughly that same time period. Her book traces how these killings, once furtive, clandestine acts, eventually became popular public spectacles, and she examines what that means for our understanding of the legacy of racial violence and discrimination in America. A warning: we'll be talking today about a book that includes graphic descriptions of torture and murder. It is difficult to hear about and to comprehend the cruelty of the White mobs that inflicted painful deaths on so many people. But understanding the depravity of these acts is fundamental to understanding what Black people faced and feared on a daily basis. Dr. Scott's book is the result of important research that we think is very important to share. It's called Lynching and Leisure: Race and the Transformation of Mob Violence in Texas. It's published by University of Arkansas Press. Terry Anne Scott joined us on our digital line from Frederick, Maryland.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
