The Context of White Supremacy hosts the weekly summit on Neutralizing Workplace Racism 06/16/23. We inch closer to "Juneteenth" 2023, so Gus suggests non-white people be alert for tacky comments from White co-workers. A number of listeners have shared anecdotes about Race Soldier colleagues lobbing snide remarks about "negro holidays" and slavery this time of year. If you're on vacation this coming Monday, enjoy your time away from work and invest those free hours constructively. Also, Gus saw another report on the "Silver Tsunami" - the increasing number of aging White people who are nearing retirement age in their professions. This is potentially making job vacancies for non-white people, or leaving a host of critical positions, like firefighter, vacant. The Covid-19 pandemic allegedly accelerated the rate of retirement for many workers. We'll also review the triumph of Shannon Phillips. Way back in 2018, Phillips was terminated from her position as manager of a Philadelphia Starbucks after enforcement officials were called in response to two black males being in the cafe. The conflict sparked protests, sensitivity training, and a lecture from hip-hop artist Common at the Starbuck's Seattle headquarters. Phillips was fired in response to the conflict. However, this week Phillips nabbed a $25 million court victory, where a judge ruled this White Woman was a victim of workplace discrimination. #KeepItProfessional #TheCOWS14Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#

We’re going to sound incredibly ignorant to some of you - but we strongly believe in being fully transparent and honest. We have been ignorant. We have had rose colored glasses on - or maybe just no glasses on because we weren’t SEEING what we were hearing. Racism. The black communty has been screaming it still exists. We never really knew what side to believe so we just moved on with life.  UNTIL WE WATCHED THE VIDEO OF GEORGE FLOYD.  We have a lot to learn about racism in our country, and we WANT to do better. We want to educate ourselves as much as we can for the sake of our family, friends, and community as well as for our kiddos.  On the podcast today, we are honored to have with us two AMAZING ladies, Melissa DePino and Michele Saahene. They met in 2018 in a Philadelphia Starbucks after having witnessed and stood up to racism. Together they started From Privilege to Progress, a national movement to desegregate the public conversation about race. They lead the way for anti-racism by learning, speaking, and amplifying the voice of people of color on social media. Welcome, Melissa and Michele!  Show Notes:    02:34 - Jamie says thank you to frans for all of their support through this 4th trimester! 06:53 - Jamie shares that she has been trying to spend time educating herself in order that they can teach their kids how to speak out against racism. 08:10 - Jamie shares that she was searching online for how to speak out against racism and she came upon a Forbes article and liked the article so much she wanted to have the ladies on the podcast! 10:27 - Michele shares how she and Melissa first met at Starbucks and how they joined together against racism after witnessing racial discrimination against two black guys who would not buy coffee. 16:46 - Michele talks about confronting the Starbucks barista. 22:48 - Melissa shares that it is important to talk about the moment that you find out you are white - for Jamie and Doug it was when they saw the video of George Floyd; at that point now that their lens gets cleansed, now is the time to relearn everything you knew and try to understand others. 24:14 - We have to look within ourselves and make changes but also work towards systemic change. The ladies share that policing was based on white supremacy. They were originally slave patrol. That is still going on today!  25:24 - In order to understand, we have to LISTEN. 27:58 - Michele and Melissa talk about what we can do to stand up against racism. Even just interrupting conversations and ask people to reflect on what they are saying.  30:27 - Michele shares that she didn’t learn anything about her people growing up - education is the #1 thing to do to understand about the black communities! 32:58 - Jamie encourages listeners to start trying to make a stand! You can be a part of the change by checking yourself when you are with others.  34:20 - Jamie shares that she doesn’t believe all white people are bad, all cops are bad, all black people are bad, she just believes there can be a bad apple in the bunch and it takes the rest to help filter that bad apple out! 37:03 - Next week on the podcast, YouTube star and teen momma, Yasmyn Switzer!    Be the change! On April 12, 2018, Donte Robinson and Rashon Nelson, two Black men, were waiting in a Philadelphia Starbucks for another man to join them for a business meeting. As was widely reported, they were asked to leave after not buying anything and ultimately were arrested for trespassing after refusing to leave. (The manager who called 911 is no longer with Starbucks.) As soon as I learned about this incident, I wanted to talk to a police officer in Philadelphia about what happened, how officers are trained to handle such incidents, and issues of policing and race more generally. G. Lamar Stewart, a Philadelphia police officer and, importantly, Vice-President of the National Black Police Association: Greater Philadelphia Chapter, agreed to this interview. This past weekend I got to perform in Philadelphia and it was my first time there since I busted my head open there 4 years ago and became sober. Philadelphia changed the world! The racism of the a Starbucks manager in Philadelphia is what made Starbucks change their corporate policy to that no one has to buy anything when we go to Starbucks. Because of a racist incident that happened at a Philadelphia Starbucks we are all free to loiter there or hold meetings without spending a dime. And you don't want to see what will happen if you don't give me that bathroom key. I love Philadelphia because they hate everyone and everyone is equal because of that. Shalom Amigos y Amigas!

Following protests and a firestorm of controversy after two black men were arrested inside a Philadelphia Starbucks, the coffee purveyor closed its U.S.-based retail stores and corporate offices on May 29 to provide racial-bias training to its workforce. Incidents such as this one, as well as similar issues that have since involved LA Fitness, AirBnB, and a Pennsylvania golf course, reveal that hidden, unconscious, and systemic bias are costly issues that employers cannot ignore. While most workplaces have clear anti-discrimination and anti-harassment policies in place, unconscious bias can nonetheless creep in and damage workplace culture, productivity, and even retention. How does this happen? And what can HR do about it? Here to provide some insights is Patricia Pope, a recognized subject matter expert with over four decades of knowledge and experience in diversity, inclusion, and culture change.

On April 12, 2018, Donte Robinson and Rashon Nelson, two African-American men, were arrested for trespassing at a Philadelphia Starbucks (https://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2018/04/14/602556973/starbucks-police-and-mayor-weigh-in-on-controversial-arrest-of-2-black-men-in-ph). They were waiting for another person to join them for a meeting, when a manager called the police because they hadn't made a purchase. In the face of ensuing controversy, Starbucks closed stores nationwide one afternoon at the end of May in order to hold anti-bias training sessions (https://www.npr.org/2018/05/17/611909506/starbucks-training-focuses-on-the-evolving-study-of-unconscious-bias) for employees. As in this case and elsewhere (https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2017/12/implicit-bias-training-salt-lake/548996/), the topic of implicit racial bias has captured many imaginations. Implicit bias has been studied by many social psychologists, and one particular measure, the Implicit Association Test (or IAT) has often been used in that research. It has also been used by practitioners, often for purposes of raising participants' awareness of their own biases. And millions have completed IAT's online at the Project Implicit website. In this episode, I talk with six people who have all thought about the IAT, with the conversation covering such topics as (a) what kinds of mental associations might be revealed by performance on the IAT, (b) how reliable is it as a measure, and (c) whether or not the research debates surrounding the IAT are an example of good science. My guests are psychologists Calvin Lai, Brian Nosek, Mike Olson, Keith Payne, and Simine Vazire, as well as journalist Jesse Singal. Former Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter insists that serving in city council is the best job in politics. He served two terms as mayor and managed to lower the city’s homicide rate and increase the high school graduation rate. Still, he says, it wasn’t enough. Though it may not be as glamorous as working in national politics, Nutter says you can more easily see progress when serving at the local level. In this episode, he talks with Jonathan Capehart, editorial writer for the Washington Post, about Nutter’s recent book, Mayor: The Best Job in Politics. Their discussion also delves into the relationship between law enforcement and communities of color, President Trump, and a recent incident at a Philadelphia Starbucks where two African American men were arrested. Well, the Bill Cosby verdict, a review of a book Sam read, the end of the Ronny Jackson nomination, the SESTA/FOSTA law, more on Cohen, the incident with the black men arrested in the Philadelphia Starbucks, and a bit about a nice video of Comet 67P. Hey guys! Here's another episode of Here Is The Problem, where we discuss current events as topics from an ideologically pure libertarian standpoint. Anyway, let's get to the topics at hand, shall we? 1. More on the Philadephia Starbucks ruckus. I talk about the updates involving the two black gentlemen who should have bought a cup of coffee at Starbucks. The stupidities of the Philly Mayor and the Police Commissioner are explored. 2. Former actress and "Smallville" star Allison has been arraigned in federal court facing one count of criminal sex trafficking, one count of criminal sex trafficking conspiracy, and one count of criminal forced labor. Basically, Mack is the member of this weird-ass Scientology-like group called NXIVM in which she founded a subgroup within the organization called DOS to lure women for the purpose of making money for the group's leader and founder Keith Raniere and fucking him to satisfy his sexual pleasures. She could be facing 15 years to life in prison, and so does Raniere. Reason Magazine and I reveal what Mack did wasn't criminal and why the State is wrong on so many issues. 3. My fascination and interest in The Avengers: Infinity War that's out in the theaters. 4. Former porn star Stormy Daniel's lawsuit alleges that she and President Trump had a sexual imbroglio. Her lawsuit has now been placed on hold, and Trump's attorney Michael Cohen is likely to be prosecuted for remunerating Daniels in the amount of $130,000 which is illegal considering he represents Trump, and Trump making a campaign donation which is illegal. After all, the maximum amount is $27,000. Enjoy this show, people! I know I really have.

The two men resigned themselves to the store's apparent policy and simply decided to wait for their friend. After asking them to leave, the manager then called the police, maintaining that the men refused to leave the store. Controversy swelled after a customer uploaded a video of the two men being led away in cuffs by the police. Meanwhile, their awaited friend and business partner enters the scene repeatedly asking, "What did they do?" The video received millions of views, sparked protests, and began a national conversation about the role of unconscious bias and the changing face of racism in U.S. culture. Hey guys! Yes, this show has been on hiatus for a while simply because of my mother who has been hospitalized and put into a nursing home for physical therapy rehab twice in a row. Life here has been difficult, and I've been doing my best to tough it out, and yet I think things are going okay for me and my little Shih Tzu Bella. Boy, do we have a handful of things to talk about! So let's get into them. Ok? 1. Two black men get arrested at a Philadelphia Starbucks. Why? Because they were allegedly loitering on the premises by coming into the store, using the restroom without paying for coffee, sitting down, and waiting for a friend to show up for a business meeting. I'm not buying it, but we'll discuss it here. 2. The Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland, Florida and the subsequent events that have followed are excellent reasons why we can never really trust the Leftist media and its biased reporting and why these kids are misguided when it comes to the Second Amendment and their support for gun control. and 3. The Stormy Daniels situation involving Donald Trump....man, the story behind this matter is ludicrous. While her claims that she slept with Donald Trump may be true, there's no substantive evidence to prove them. What I find highly suspicious is her claim revealing that she was threatened by a man who told her that she should drop her claim of sleeping with Trump or something would happen to her, especially when this threat was issued to her at a parking lot. I'm having trouble swallowing her beef, but there's more to this story than meets the eye. More to follow! Enjoy it!

On today’s episode, Tim speaks with Monifa Bandele, Vice President and Chief Partnership & Equity Officer for Moms Rising: an organization committed to amplifying women's voices within the national public policy dialogue and media. Tim and Monifa discuss Mom’s Rising’s campaign to address the disturbing maternal health disparities between black and white women in America, including distressing rates of maternal mortality for African American women irrespective of socioeconomic status. Why are black women dying at much higher rates, and how does racism — implicit and institutional — contribute to the problem? How do stereotypes of black women, often held even by white physicians, endanger their lives? And what policy changes are needed to address the problem? They’ll also discuss last week’s removal of the statue of J. Marion Sims from Central Park in New York City. Sims, often called the “father of gynecology” (itself a rather absurd term given the long history of midwifery), developed many of his gynecological methods after submitting enslaved black women to torturous techniques, against their will, and without anesthesia. Why is the removal of the statue important, and not only at a symbolic level? Finally, this episode includes a commentary by Tim about the implicit white nationalism at the heart of a number of recent incidents, in which black bodies were presumed not to belong in certain spaces, including that Philadelphia Starbucks we’ve all heard about. While many think of white nationalism as something that comes with burning crosses and marching around with tiki torches (as in Charlottesville last August), the presumption that black folks (and other people of color) simply don’t belong “here” (meaning our neighborhood, our school, our businesses, etc) is all too common and ingrained in the fabric of America.

The full broadcast of Boston Public Radio from Wednesday, April 18, 2018. In the past week, two events have yet again sparked a conversation about race in our country. Two black men were arrested while waiting for a friend at a Philadelphia Starbucks, and a black Harvard student was brutally beaten by police in Cambridge. We opened the lines and asked you if we can ever get that national conversation about race right. Jennifer Nassour, former chair of the Mass GOP, founder of Conservative Women for a Better Future, and counsel to Rubin and Rudman --along with Steve Kerrigan, President and co-founder of the Massachusetts Military Heroes Fund and former CEO of the DNC--talked local and national politics. National security expert Juliette Kayyem updated us on the most recent developments in the Russian investigation. Writer and historian Timothy Snyder talked about his newest book, "The Road to Unfreedom." Former Suffolk County Sheriff Andrea Cabral gave her thoughts on the recent change to Vermont gun laws. WGBH’s Executive Arts Editor Jared Bowen reviewed Amy Schumer's new movie, "I Feel Pretty."

On this episode of Hanging With Apes the guys start off the conversation with their thoughts on the aftermath of the U.S. led Syria Air Strikes on Syrian chemical facilities. Were Trump supporters wrong or right in being upset about this? What message did the U.S. give off and was it the right approach? A few patrons of the chain that were there were outraged and shared videos they took of the situation sparking a #BoycottStarbucks twitter trend and national news coverage. This lead K. Cartoon and Rx Phonics to give their take on not only the situation but the way media lacks integrity on their quest for clicks and advertising money. Finally, K. Cartoon recommends a very good book!
