As General Manager of PayPal's Small Business and Financial Services Group, Michelle Gill is responsible for bringing together the products and services that help small business owners run and grow their business. She is my guest for this episode of the Tearsheet Podcast. Michelle brings deep financial expertise and experience building platforms and tools that help customers manage their finances to her role on PayPal's Senior Leadership Team. Michelle was previously Senior Vice President of Intuit's business money management, payment, and banking service, QuickBooks Money Platform. Prior to Intuit, Michelle successfully integrated and expanded SoFi's lending business as General Manager and Executive Vice President of Consumer Lending and Capital Markets. Drawing on her early career experience as a Managing Director and Partner at Goldman Sachs, Michelle also served as SoFi's Chief Financial Officer before moving into the product leadership role. Before that, Michelle spent a decade leading the U.S. Assets business for global investment firm Sixth Street Partners. Given her career and experiences, Michelle brings a broad view of fintech innovation. She focuses on user-centered solutions. At PayPal, she leads efforts to help entrepreneurs navigate the complicated web of financial tools they often depend on. “The preponderance of [small businesses] use greater than 15 tools to run their business,” she shares. “What they got into business for is the passion… and yet they end up spending more time on things that are not what they love.” Our conversation explores how PayPal is actively trying to reduce that complexity. It does so not by offering more tools, but by making the ones they already use work better together. Gill outlines the strategy behind PayPal's cash flow-based lending model and how it fits within their open ecosystem, whether it's digital lending, embedded finance, or leveraging open banking.

It's that time again - Welcome back to yet another episode of the WGI Unleashed Podcast! Join us for episode 86 as we sit down with Kimberlee DeBosier, WGI's VP of Transportation in Tampa, Florida - From humble beginnings in East Lansing, Michigan, to leading major infrastructure projects across the nation, Kim's story exemplifies resilience, determination, and a deep passion for making a difference in the transportation engineering field. A Coin Flip That Changed Everything Kim's early aspirations were far from civil engineering. While attending Michigan State University, her initial goal was to become a research chemist. However, her exposure to engineering through MSU's STEM program ignited a new passion, leading her to make a life-changing decision. In a twist of fate, Kim literally flipped a coin to decide between Civil and Chemical Engineering - The coin landed on Civil Engineering, and the rest, as they say, is history. The Road to Success Throughout her college years, Kim's determination was unwavering. She worked hard to put herself through school, driven by a desire to graduate in four years with a degree that would support her long-term goals. Her grandmother, who raised her with the belief that women should always be able to take care of themselves, instilled in her a strong sense of independence and perseverance. After earning her degree, Kim embarked on a journey that took her across the country—from Oklahoma City, where she began her career in building design, to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where she earned her MBA from Louisiana State University and spent her time honing her skills in bridge design. It was during this time that Kim discovered her true passion for engineering consulting, and under the mentorship of a supportive leader, she grew into a well-rounded professional. Entrepreneurial Spirit and Landmark Projects After gaining invaluable experience under her mentor in Baton Rouge, Kim moved to Tampa, Florida, where she eventually went out on her own to found an engineering consulting firm. With a desire for greater flexibility and control over her work-life balance, Kim was motivated to become a true entrepreneur. For over two decades, she led her firm to success, working on notable projects such as the Wallaroo Station at Tampa's Lowry Park Zoo and the Selmon Expressway project connecting St. Pete, Tampa, and Brandon. Despite the demands of running her own business, Kim's passion for engineering never waned, and after selling her firm, she was highly sought after by many companies. Ultimately, she chose to join WGI, where she now leads the transportation division. Initially brought on as Director of Project Excellence, she quickly rose to the position of Vice President of Transportation and became an integral part of WGI's Senior Leadership Team. A Well-Rounded Life Beyond her impressive professional achievements, Kim is an avid fitness enthusiast and a lover of the outdoors. She enjoys spending time jet skiing with her family and is always up for an adventure. A proud mother of two grown sons and a grandmother, she balances her personal and professional life with grace, coming full circle as someone that others in the industry can look up to. Kim's story is one of resilience, innovation, and leadership - She has paved the way for future generations of women in engineering, demonstrating that with hard work and determination, anything is possible. There's a lot of talk these days about church hurt. People who have been hurt or disappointed by spiritual leaders, spiritual leaders who have been hurt by those they are called to lead. This episode features an interview with Christian Mitchell, EVP & Chief Customer Officer at Northwestern Mutual. Christian works to elevate the customer experience and deliver bold solutions to set Northwestern Mutual ahead of its competitors. And over his 18-year tenure at Northwestern mutual, he has served in a variety of leadership roles, including as president of their Wealth Management Company when he managed $129 billion in client assets. Host Sohaib Ahmed discusses with Mitchell his journey and various roles at Northwestern Mutual over 18 years, alongside his insights into building memorable customer experiences. They delve into how Northwestern Mutual integrates technology to enhance customer experiences while maintaining a human-centric approach. Mitchell shares his perspective on the evolving customer expectations, the future of customer experience (CX), including the potential impact of generative AI, and the significance of consistency in delivering great CX. Additionally, the importance of data privacy, the challenges of implementing new technologies, and the role of storytelling in reshaping company culture towards more client-centric values are covered.Quotes*”The financial services marketplace is complex. I really think you need to understand that holistic landscape in order to take all of that and fashion it into an incredible client experience. If you don't have that holistic understanding of the system and how we create value and what clients need, it's easy to default to designing experiences indexed on efficiency, or maybe client experiences that index on regulatory adherence, but not actually creating something that's really incredible and delightful for the client.”*”On metrics, it's really evolved. When we started the CX journey, it was really focused on CSAT, NPS, those really big aggregate numbers that are easy to compare across companies. As time has gone on, I've become less and less enamored with those aggregate metrics. We still need to calculate them, we need to track, we need to benchmark, etc. But I think CX telemetry is best done at a more granular basis where you're actually measuring things like individual interactions and satisfaction.”*”I think at times you can find a metric and seek to maximize it, and then kind of lose the storyline a little bit. So I think you always have to kind of come back to this foundation of what are we trying to do strategically? What are we really solving for holistically?”*”In terms of the media stuff that we do, the planning and progress study, a lot of the talks that I give internally, to our advisors, to client groups, it's about this constant drumbeat of storytelling around the client. And I think that constant drumbeat of storytelling is incredibly important for long standing incumbent financial services companies because historically we were very focused on financial performance. We might have been very focused on recruiting of advisors, and those things are very important. But by constantly storytelling around the client, incredible experiences, things that we want to do, it's part of shifting the zeitgeist, the mindset of the organization to be more client centric.”*”One of the interesting areas where we debate a lot is instances where the client may have a preference for self service, but we somehow want to inject a human to make sure that the best client outcome occurs. The poster child example would be, we have a big market correction, the client gets scared, wants to liquidate his or her portfolio, and might prefer to do that in an automated way via the mobile experience. Now, if the client really wants to do that, of course we will help them do it. But that might not actually be the best long-term decision. So in instances like that, we actually want to insert some human friction, for lack of a better word, to at least gut check that client, to really make sure that we're helping that client not only have a good experience today, but really achieve their financial goals long term.”*”A lot of the experiences that we create in financial services or financial planning, it's more at pulling the heartstrings than the math. It's about the emotion, the psychology. How do you harness that in such a way that the client makes the right decisions and is better off long term?”*”Sometimes we think about the peak moments of the client experience. That ‘You can retire moment,' or ‘Your family's protected' moment. But I actually think real trust, real client experience comes through consistency of interaction, predictability, and high quality communication that plays out over really, really long periods of time. So I think consistency is really the name of the game and one of the unsung heroes of great client experiences.”Time Stamps[2:38] Christian Mitchell's Journey in Northwestern Mutual[5:16] The Evolution of Customer Expectations at Northwestern Mutual[7:14] Leveraging Technology to Enhance Customer Experience[16:15] The Future of Customer Experience: Innovations and Challenges[21:10] Building Lifelong Customer Relationships and Looking Ahead[30:03] The Importance of Consistency in CXAbout our guest, Christian MitchellChristian W. For Jay Vallotton, the turning point in his marriage was learning to connect with his wife through her emotions rather than trying to fix them. Now, Jason urges men to reconsider their approach to emotions, both in marriage and parenting. Tune in as he shares practical advice for repairing mistakes, handling dysregulation in a child, and approaching conversations with the end in mind. Key Takeaways To live wholeheartedly means addressing sin, being present, and fulfilling your God-given call instead of allowing fear to shrink you. Your wife needs to feel seen, known, and heard. Trust is not built through the absence of mistakes but by how you repair. The #1 conversation hack is to start with the end in mind. The right time to instruct and discipline is not when your child is emotionally dysregulated. Jay Vallotton Jay Vallotton is the founder of BraveCo, a member of the Senior Leadership Team at Bethel Church, and an overseer of the Bethel Transformation Center. He is passionate about helping people discover their God-given identity, find freedom, and walk out their true calling. Jason lives in Redding, California, with his wife, Lauren, and their five kids and daughter-in-law. Key Quotes 3:48 - "One of the prayers that David prays is, God, search me, know me, reveal to me what's going on in my life. Which honestly, is such a scary, dangerous prayer. But on the other side, I think that in order to live wholeheartedly we do have to address those areas in our life that aren't whole, that have cracks or have a little bit of brokenness or doubt, and that's a very challenging thing to do. But what that really means is when I come home and my wife confronts me on something and I dismiss her feelings, I'm not living wholeheartedly. When I come home and my kids want to play and I don't want to be present, I'm actually not living wholeheartedly. The practical application of being. The things that you write on your heart, the things that you write on your wrist, the truth, God's truth.. You have to live those out in your day to day life. And there's accountability inside of that." 17:05 - "Trust is not built through the absence of mistakes. Trust is built by how you clean up a mess. Your wife will trust you because she knows you can have a bad moment, you're going to go away, you're going to process through that in a healthy way and come back and give her what you wish you would've given her in the moment. That's more valuable than being able to nail it every time, because we innately know no one's going to nail it every time. But what we don't know is, I trust that you're going to come back and repair what has been damaged. If you can repair what you are messing up, you're adding so much more value than just trying to get it right, perfectly or expecting yourself to. You're not and your wife's not, more importantly, your whole environment, isn't. So, your kids are going to watch you do this process. Your wife's going to watch you do this process, and they're going to follow in this ecosystem that it's okay to fail. It's not okay to hurt each other but it's okay to fail because we can go back and clean up a mess." One of RX's largest and most important events globally, JCK has thrived under Bachmann's leadership. Bachmann directly manages JCK while overseeing Event Leaders on both Luxury and JIS and has steered JCK to become an industry leading, award-winning event in the trade show industry, and the most important jewelry buying and educational event globally for the jewelry industry. Luxury, the curated, invitation-only event taking place alongside JCK has also been reimagined under Bachmann's portfolio as the event for the luxury jewelry community. JCK and Luxury bring over 30,000 industry professionals together, including 18,000+ vetted attendees from over 100 countries and 2,000 exhibitors, ranging from designers, manufacturers, and gemstone wholesalers to packaging companies and technology service providers. The show covers 1.2 million square feet of exhibition space at the iconic Venetian Expo and The Venetian Las Vegas. Under her leadership in event strategy, planning, execution, sales, attendance, acquisition, marketing, public relations, operations and special events, Bachmann has achieved all-time high ratings for both exhibitor and attendee satisfaction, loyalty and net promotion for both JCK and Luxury, increasing scores between 15 to 20% and over 30 points in NPS overall. Furthermore, under her strategic and creative direction, JCK has led the way in becoming a top experiential event that attendees not only consider necessary for their business but also eagerly anticipate attending. In the digital realm, Bachmann led the team in bringing JCK to the industry virtually in 2020, with the JCK Virtual show being a pioneer in launching digital offers in light of the pandemic limiting face-to-face events. In March of 2021, Bachmann led the team to bring back the first show for RX US, JIS, and continued to forge the team ahead in bringing back in-person JCK and Luxury events in August as some of the first large scale trade shows returning to face-to-face, all to great success. New to Bachmann's achievements are leading the JCK team in exceeding pre-pandemic 2019 show levels before most shows, in both sales revenue, attendance, and much higher NPS and customer satisfaction scores, with the 2022 edition marking a milestone year in the event's history and winning Trade Show Executives Gold 100 “Greatest Trade Show” of the year award. This was then followed up under Bachmann's leadership with the 2023 edition continuing to grow to a sold out show floor and increasing attendance once again. As a member of RX's senior leadership team, Bachmann plays a critical role in shaping event leaders across RX US, leading bi-monthly Event Leader meetings where key issues are discussed and best practices are shared across the division leaders. Bachmann also leads the way with activations and experiences, playing a crucial part of JCK and serving as a model for other B2B events, along with increasing the focus on DE&I in all the industries she serves forging partnerships with key members of diverse groups including the Black in Jewelry Coalition and leading by example at her shows and RX. Bachmann utilizes her experience in change management by serving as the Executive Sponsor and liaison for the show teams with the digital team during RX's roll out of a new registration system across RX US. Bachmann currently serves on the executive boards of the American Gem Society, Jewelers' Security Alliance, 24 Karat Club of New York, Women's Jewelry Association and UFI Global Congress Advisory, as well as on the GEM Awards committee and chair of the JCK Industry Fund committee. Ms. Bachmann holds a BS in Business Administration from the University of Albany and the prestigious honor of having been invited to participate in the GE Management Development Course. She was also one of a select few to be chosen for the Reed Elsevier Business University. Her career trajectory began in consulting as a Process Design Consultant with Andersen Consulting (Accenture). She expanded into communications as a Six Sigma certified Master Black Belt for General Electric at NBC and later became the Director of E-Business for NBC's Broadcast and Network Operations Division. Now serving close to two decades in show management, Bachmann is a well-rounded and well-known professional, highly regarded throughout the jewelry and trade show industries. Bob Judson served for 34½ years in the military, rising from front-line fast-jet pilot to being a member of the Royal Air Force's Senior Leadership Team and an Air Vice-Marshal. He flew the Jaguar, Phantom, and Typhoon, and had the privilege of displaying the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Spitfires & Hurricanes for 2 years whilst he was the Station Commander of RAF Coningsby. In a military career that saw him shift from being on Quick Reaction Alert as a 21 year old in the Cold War with an atomic bomb on the bottom of his Jaguar, through serving on a German squadron as an exchange pilot when the Berlin wall fell, to being the Director of Joint Warfare in his final role, Bob saw a vast amount of change in the RAF and across the world more generally. He flew 120 operational missions over Iraq and Bosnia-Herzegovina, served in the Pentagon as the Chief of Defence Staff's Liaison Officer, commanded the NATO airbase in Kandahar (25,000 people from more than 20 nations, 170 aircraft and lots of hostile incoming rockets!), and led the MOD support to the London Olympic & Paralympic Games in 2012.Beyond the military, Bob has built a very successful second career in the private sector. Having initially moved to Deloitte as a director in their resilience and crisis management business, he set up his own consulting and leadership development business in 2019.A qualified coach and neuro-linguistic programming practitioner, Bob now focuses mostly on leadership development for private sector clients and, with his Leading 4 Life brand, he runs workshops, facilitates training courses, and coaches individual senior leaders across a range of industries. His recently launched podcast, Leading 4 Life “Stories”, provides a source of leadership tips and experiences from Bob and his guests.Bob went to school at Christ's Hospital, Horsham and has never forgotten the great start in life that the school gave him. For the past 8 years (he finished in July), he has been a non-executive director on the Christ's Hospital Council, which looks after not only the school but also the multi-million £ charitable endowment that enabled them to fund £21 million in bursaries last year, more than 3 times the amount of the next nearest school.Away from the world of work, Bob lives in East Sussex with his wife Saab and their 2 dogs (Shadow & Skye). He is a keen motorcyclist, having taken up riding after leaving the RAF to provide an adrenaline replacement! He also enjoys skiing, scuba diving (especially with sharks) and the occasional round of not very good golf!Bob's top leadership tip is for leaders to remember that they have 2 ears and one mouth and that they should use them in proportion! Too many leaders talk much more than they listen and, consequently, they too often fail to capitalise on much of the value that they could derive from those around them. Hosted on Acast. Holding a Business Degree with an emphasis in marketing I worked in the corporate world for the first 15 years after graduating. It was at the end of those 15 years that I had the clear call of God on my life to enter vocational ministry and plant a church. So I quit my six-figure business career, the Senior Leadership Team of a $200M national healthcare company, and gave up my corner office. I burned the ships! I enrolled in Talbot Theological Seminary and graduated two years later. After graduating I planted a non-denominational Bible teaching church in 2006. I have watched it grow from 25 people in a backyard to celebrate Easter each year with over 5000 people, a permanent campus, and a multi-staff of over 70. My wife, Stacey, and I have been married for 34 years, have 3 married kids, and 2 grandkids. We still love each other and we love our church. My life story is the story of God's grace. Now I want to share some of the grace with other Lead Pastors.

In this introductory episode, Jason and Lauren share a little about themselves and why they've started this podcast. Married for nearly 12 years, the Vallottons have a complex combination of relational dynamics. Divorce, remarriage, blended family, adult children, and babies are all a part of the story. They're both pastors and leaders at Bethel Church in Redding, California where Jason serves on the Senior Leadership Team, oversees the counseling department, and runs a men's ministry called BraveCo. Lauren is focussing on the babies in this season but also serves on the Senior Leadership Team at Bethel. The genesis of "Dates, Mates & Babies with the Vallottons" was birthed out of their journey of leading themselves and others through the ups and downs of life in pursuit of the highest level of relational fulfillment and health. Jason and Lauren believe that as humans, we're created in the image of God, designed to live in family and community, but learning to thrive in these contexts is learned rather than innate. They're excited to unpack subjects of relational health, relatable stories from their own journey, interviews with experts, and series on relational topics of interest. If you want to learn about dating, marriage, raising kids, journeying through infertility, blending families or a variety of other subjects, subscribe and stay connected!Connect with Lauren:InstagramFacebook Connect with Jason:Jay's InstagramJay's FacebookBraveCo Instagramwww.braveco.org
