By Davy Crockett Ted Corbitt, from New York City, has been called “The Father of American Ultrarunning.” Today, most ultrarunners have not even heard his name and do not understand what he did for the sport that we enjoy today. Ultrarunning has existed for more the 200 years, but with the Great Depression and World War II, it went on a long hiatus in America. Because of Corbitt's efforts, running past the marathon distance took root in the New York Ciry area, starting in the late 1950s. Not only was he a world-class runner, but he became a talented administrator, coach, and race director that made huge contributions toward innovations to the sport that we take for granted today. All ultrarunners need to take time to learn who this man was and not let the memory of him fade. He was the first person to be inducted into the American Ultrarunning Hall of Fame. Because of his significance to the sport, this will be a multi-part article/episode. Visit TedCorbitt.com to learn far more about this amazing athlete and man. Also, you can read his official biography by John Chodes: Corbitt: The Story of Ted Corbitt, Long Distance Runner. Theodore “Ted” Corbitt (1919-2007) was born in Dunbarton, Barnwell, South Carolina, to John Henry Corbitt (1894-1974) and Alma Bing (1895-2003). Dunbarton was a railroad stop town with agriculture as the main focus. His father, John, was a cotton and corn farmer and part-time preacher. Ted's Grandfather, Ezekiel Bing Corbitt's ancestors from the Corbitt and Bing lines were enslaved in South Carolina for many generations. His grandfather, Deacon Zeek Bing (1855-1938) was born into slavery, also in Barnwell County. In 1860, there were at least 17,000 slaves in the county. Most of them had ancestry from Angola, Africa. Children on the cotton plantations started to work by about the age of five and by 10-12 years old did hard adult work. When freedom came after the Civil War, the hard work as freedmen to survive in South Carolina did not go away. Ted Corbitt was the oldest child in his family. He later had two sisters, Bernice (Corbitt) Buggs (1926-2006) and Louise Estelle (Corbitt) Fairbanks (1927-2022) and a brother, Elijah Corbitt (1928-1999). As a youth, Corbitt worked hard on the family farm, which eventually grew to 160 acres. At times, he would pick more than 100 pounds of cotton in a day. He had to walk or run a total of four miles each day to get to and from his school, using the narrow, dusty roads and trails. His grandfather, Henry Corbitt (1873-) lived nearby. Grandpa Corbitt had good running and jumping abilities as a youth, and he inspired Corbitt with stories of his athletic adventures. The Bings, who were his mother's relatives, enjoyed greater financial success, and his mother's ambition encouraged him to succeed academically and attend college. In 1929, Corbitt's family relocated to Cincinnati, Ohio, when he was around nine years old, due to the challenges of farming in South Carolina. During the Great Depression, they lived in the West End, which was the center of Cincinnati's black community. The neighborhood was reminiscent of a slum, with a high concentration of inexpensive housing covering a 35-block area. It was the home to 70% of the city's black community. Times were very hard. His father worked as a pick and shovel laborer. They lived at 1027 Richmond Street, which is now a freeway (I-75). Corbitt encountered athletics after arriving in Cincinnati. In junior high, he entered a 60-yard dash and won. As he got bigger and stronger, he became faster. At Woodward High School, he joined the track team. Compared to other high schools in Cincinnati, the school on Sycamore Street had the most inadequate facilities, including the absence of a sports field. Tarzan Brown It was not until his final year of high school that he really excelled in the 880-yard run. He finished fourth in the city championship. During his high school years,
"I encoded the escalators as midi and then fed the results into my DAW (Bitwig) before adding effects etc. I like the pun of the title "The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner"; appropriate both to the escalators running in the abandoned shopping centre and the fact that the squeaks sound like sneakers on the gym floor!" You might assume that running is a no-brainer for improved mental health. Fresh air, exercise, endorphins? That's tick, tick, tick. But prepare to have your assumptions challenged. This episode, Lego Masters co-host and pro builder Ryan “Brickman” McNaught challenges Hobba & Hing to try long distance running - that's right, the thing that makes the guy lonely in 1962's The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner. But will the solitude be just what they needed?
You might know Grace Tame as an activist for survivors of sexual assault, but there's so much more to the 2021 Australian of the Year. As a teenager, Grace moved to the US by herself and struck up a friendship with John Cleese. Grace joins Gary Jubelin to chat about everything - including why she ran for 72 kilometres straight, how she uses humour to punch up and what really happened during that moment she met former prime minister Scott Morrison. Hailing from the Central Coast (NSW) alt-Rock duo Winterbourne (James Draper and Jordan Brady) are a refreshingly unique and energetic exhibition of musical tightness and indulgent banter - a style that they have honed through many years of continuous touring and friendship. This episode I chat with Winterbourne about heading on tour for the first time in 3 years. We discussed the release of their latest tracks 'Forevermore' and 'Long Distance Runner', wisdom teeth fears, creating a movie based upon thier 2019 Echo of Youth Tour and people who talk during movies.

This week's guest is a terrific character actor with over thirty years in the industry. A veteran of more than seventy Hollywood movies and hundreds of episodes of television, Donal Logue is the beloved scene-stealer of such films as Sneakers, Blade, and Zodiac, and TV series as Grounded for Life, Sons of Anarchy, Vikings, Gotham, and of course, the great Terriers, which Jed Ayres and I celebrated earlier this year in a full episode. Additionally, the recipient of the Special Jury Prize for Outstanding Acting at the 2000 Sundance Film Festival for the indie favorite The Tao of Steve, Donal also has quite the passion and talent for writing. In 2021, he co-wrote the brilliant New York Times bestseller Trejo: My Life of Crime, Redemption, & Hollywood, along with his good friend Danny Trejo. Currently hard at work on his next book, Donal has just been added to the third season of the popular Queen Latifah CBS series The Equalizer, which I'm looking forward to checking out. Needless to say, he's a very busy guy! Someone I'm honored to have gotten to know after the Terriers episode, Donal has not only become a very good friend but has also consistently given me the best film recommendations, including several that we discuss in this fascinating episode. In a thoughtful roughly two-hour conversation, Donal shares his affection for the gritty, social realism centric tales of the so-called "angry young men" that took the world by storm in the UK Kitchen Sink Drama movement of theater and film in the late 1950s and early '60s. Focusing primarily on Look Back in Anger, The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner, Billy Liar, This Sporting Life, Kes, A Taste of Honey, Saturday Night and Sunday Morning, and The Entertainer, this is an episode to listen to with a pen and a pad of paper as masterful films get cited throughout. With sharp insights about acting, filmmaking, and storytelling from his perspective as a film fan first and a professional second, this engaging chat is a treat for cinephiles everywhere. B. Lorraine Smith is a writer, speaker, corporate mischievist, and generally curious student of life. She changes minds (most often her own), casting a dubious eye on the line between work and play. She holds a vision of a future where all industry is a force for healing and any exceptions compost themselves into history. She has been working towards this vision with global companies since 2004, bringing together activists, executives and thought-leaders. she shares what she finds as she goes along, telling as much truth as she can figure out how to spell. (Or, in the case of Matereality, how to respell.)Originally from Toronto, Canada, she spent a decade based in New York City and recently relocated to Montreal, all the better to explore the banks of the St. Lawrence River (whom she calls Lia). She runs ultra-long distances on urban trails, spins and knits her own original designs, and holds doggedly to the belief that our senses of connectedness and curiosity are our best assets. She is an independent consultant whose purpose is to contribute to the shift to a regenerative economy, one where society thrives within a healthy biosphere. Her areas of expertise inform each other – as a writer, consultant, ultramarathoner, textile artisan and sojourner. She describes her approach as “spore-based,” taking a cue from nature about how to evolve and spread important ideas. Lorraine has consulted for leading change-agents and large companies, informing strategy and stakeholder dialogue to shift us to a regenerative economy. She is also a frequent speaker at conferences on sustainability and corporate innovation. She speaks fluent French and Portuguese, as well as conversational German and Spanish. Originally from Toronto, Canada, Lorraine has lived in Australia, Brazil, Germany, New Zealand and New York City. She currently calls Montréal home.In this episode, following on from our conversation with Jennifer Hinton 2 episodes ago, we delve deeply into the concepts that underpin Lorraine's idea of 'Matereality' - what it is, and how her experience as a 'sustainability consultant' to some of the world's largest companies has led her to a new way of assessing the impact a business actually has on the planet and people it is, in theory, designed to serve. What would the world be like if corporations actually decided to benefit people and planet? Actually. Not their share holders or the vulture capitalists? With grace, humility and endless humour, Lorraine describes her journey and her conclusions of how we could re-shape the business world in time to change the trajectory towards global melt-down. This is an episode full of ideas at the corporate level, that we can nonetheless bring into our own lives. We all live in the corporate world. Even if we don't talk at C-Suite level, we are the glue that holds everything together - and we can change the ways we interact with the corporate Masters of the Universe. As a long distance runner, getting pregnant wasn't an easy encounter. I've also given it a lot of thought about the amount of running I'd be able to do. Wether to be breathless, after only a short distance, feeling discomfort, due to stretched ligaments, the size of the belly, the weight gain, and general fitness. Fact is, none of the concerns have occurred not even marginally!! @drschwank @unesurcent
This film is VERY personal for me on a number of levels and it's a difficult one to talk about, as it hits so close to home on parts of my personality and behavior. Also, I like the film itself as a job of work, but there are elements in it that only partially gel for me, which I'll go on and on about during the pod, just fast-forward through that. It's The Loneliness Of The Long-Distance Runner, a British film released by Seven Arts and distributed by British Lion Films in 1962. It's based on the 1959 short story of the same name by Allan Sillitoe, about the disaffected and lower-class youth of 1950s Britain. email: David@thosewonderfulpeople.comWebsite and blog: www.thosewonderfulpeople.comIG: @thosewonderfulpeopleTwitter: @FilmsInTheDark

They discuss the different elements of the film, including the score, which features the trio Soave sia il vento from Mozart's opera Così fan tutte, the very precise decor and evocation of late 60s London and filming inside a Jewish synagogue. The Glenda Jackson season runs at the BFI across July with a screening of this film on July 24th. Hrají mi Looptroop Rockers a skladba Last Song, když píšu úvod k dalšímu dílu Tradeshow podcastu. Symbolicky. Nebo bych si měl snad pustit desku The Long Distance Runner od Promoe? Bonus na Herohero je samozřejmě taky, takže jestli tě zajímají detaily nejhoršího zranění z malování na vlaky, here u go.
This week, we delve into the live version of Iron Maiden's "Wasted Years" that appears on Night Demon's newly released compilation album, Year of the Demon. Director, producer, screenwriter, film critic. Tony Richardson (1928-1991) held every one of these distinctions over his long and prolific career, but he's best remembered as a leading figure of the Free Cinema and British New Wave movements, which produced many great filmmakers and shed light on the plight of England's post-war working class in the late 50s and early 60s. His films Look Back in Anger, The Entertainer, A Taste of Honey, and The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner helped define this era of "kitchen sink" realism, their shared cynical, bleak tone lamenting Britain's decline from an industrialized Western powerhouse to a shell of its former self. We'll revisit these beloved films, Richardson's tumultuous marriage to the great Vanessa Redgrave, his role in the prison break of a former British spy, and more in today's episode.
