Marylyn Rigby, President and CEO of Bioceptive, focuses on improving women's health technologies. Bioceptive has developed a cervical suction retractor as an alternative to the 200-year-old cervical tenaculum device used to insert IUDs and perform biopsies and other intrauterine procedures. While current procedures are extremely painful, there has been a lack of innovation in understanding women's pain because women are often described as hysterical, with little clinical data to get to the source of the pain. Marylyn explains, "I think that also has to do with what modern medicine is based on, which is a man's body and not a woman's body. And because of that, it's kind of interesting to think that a man could ever possibly understand what it would feel like to have their cervix, which they don't even have, be pierced, essentially. It is like having your ears pierced and the traumatic experience that it causes because this is done again without any type of anesthetic. So, one of the biggest issues that we see right now, regardless of what your political stance on pro-life or pro-choice, is certainly that women need better options for contraception that are more effective." "Science has indicated that the IUD is the most effective form of contraception and that is because of its efficacy, which is greater than 99%. You're not looking to remember to take a pill. You're not looking, you're not having to have weight gain by having something inserted in your arm. It's a one-stop shop that is incredibly effective and cost-effective. However, the number one reason that women do not get IUDs more often is because of the trauma and the pain that is associated with the tenaculum, which is required to insert the IUD." #WomensHealth #Gynecology #FemTech #ReproductiveRights #ReproductiveHealth #WomensRights bioceptive.com Download the transcript here

Gynecological surgeries are extremely common. More 600,000 women get a hysterectomy each year in the US alone, and more than one-third of women will have had one by age 60. And often a woman is told that she's “good to go” after a few weeks, when in reality, when it comes to her sport, she's anything but, and she can struggle for months–or longer–because no one properly helped her rehab to return to powerlifting, doing double-unders, running 13 miles, or many of the activities we take for granted as part of regular life. That's where this week's guest, Dr. Jocelyn Wallace comes in. Using her professional as well as personal experience, Jocelyn devotes her practice to helping women rebuild strength after surgery and bridge the gap back to their active and athletic lives without prolapse, pain, or peeing themselves. We talk all about her work there as well as dealing with common pelvic health concerns, especially pain and incontinence.Jocelyn Wallace, PT, DPT, CF-L2 is a pelvic health physical therapist who helps women get back to the things they love after gynecological surgeries, specializing in hysterectomy, myomectomy, and excision surgery recovery. She has firsthand experience navigating recovery as an athlete, having her first open myomectomy a few weeks after her first powerlifting meet. After seeing how little support is given to women after major abdominal surgery, she vowed to fill that gap. Since then, she has had 2 more abdominal surgeries, with 54 fibroids removed, and is a Level 2 CrossFit Trainer, combining the skillsets of physio + fitness to help women fully return to their active lives. In this episode our guest is A'magine. A'magine is an author, educator, speaker and filmmaker. She came to the cafe to discuss her documentary called At Your Cervix. A new film exposing the little-known unethical practice of conducting non-consensual pelvic exams on unconscious patients. Grab your warm drink and tune in for a great conversation! Some key takeaways:Consent is non-negotiable: Patients have the right to set clear boundaries and be fully informed about all medical procedures involving their bodies.Advocacy matters: Being proactive, asking questions, and educating oneself before medical appointments can help protect against unethical practices. Support is crucial: We must work together to enact legislation, address systemic issues, and provide resources to empower patients and hold institutions accountable. The lack of consent is a critical issue that affects patients and medical students alike. Gynecological teaching associates (GTAs) are an excellent way for medical students to learn how to do pelvic exams with feedback.Watch the film, At Your Cervix!About A'magineA'magine earned her Master's degree in Human Sexuality Education at New York University and has been teaching and speaking about feminism and sexuality for over two decades. Formerly known as Amy Jo Goddard, she is author of Woman on Fire: Nine Elements to Wake up Your Erotic Energy, Personal Power and Sexual Intelligence and co-author of the best-selling classic Lesbian Sex Secrets for Men, both published by Penguin Random House. A coastal transplant to New Mexico, she currently thrives in the desert of the southwest, residing with her wild feline friends, who, she claims are evolved teachers about empowered sexuality and healthy boundaries.A'magine was named one of Go Magazine's “100 Women We Love” and Kinkly's “100 Sex Blogging Superheroes.” She works with women and couples on their sexual and relationship lives and she is a corporate and media consultant. She helps companies, media outlets, health care institutions and universities improve workplaces and the lives of women and elevate media representations of women and LGBTQ people. A'magine's award winning documentary film, At Your Cervix, aims to improve pelvic exams for all patients and to end unethical medical practices that harm women and transgender people. A'magine has begun to advocate for state laws banning the use of anesthetized patients without consent. Regenerative Medicine is definitively a HOT and marketable offering across a variety of medical disciplines. But it is equally as controversial. The most well known type of regenerative medicine is the use of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP). This has been proposed as a novel care therapy for musculoskeletal pain disorders, and a variety of GYNECOLOGICAL applications- including POI, pelvic floor dysfunction, uterine infertility treatment, and even some forms of vaginal fistulas. AND YES... RPR is even being used as a type of cosmetic fascial (with a new CDC health investigation underway!). In this episode, we will review the concept of Regenerative Medicine in gynecology, summarizing some key points from a brand new narrative review of the subject published in the Green Journal (Obstetrics Gynecology).
The first visit to the gynecologist is a crucial moment for your daughter's overall health. It paves the way for a lifetime of well-being. Dr. Rachel Pasquesi discusses how to help prepare your teen for her first gynecological appointment.
Dr. Maggie Abraham is a board-certified Obstetrician & Gynecologist with ABOG specialty certification in Pediatric & Adolescent Gynecology. Dr. Abraham discovered the field of pediatric and adolescent gynecology while working as a young attending at the University of Florida. There, she recognized the lack of awareness of gynecological conditions among adolescents that often leaves them suffering for years without a diagnosis or appropriate treatment. These encounters inspired her to dedicate her practice, The GYN Space, to young people and their unique gynecological needs. In this episode, Dr. Abraham and I talk about menstruation as a barometer of overall health, what's considered 'normal' for teenage periods, signs that might indicate something outside of the typical range, how to get adolescents started with cycle tracking, strategies for effective conversations with teenagers about their reproductive health, and so much more. First, I'm answering your questions about lab-grown meat, then I am talking to Dr. Deepika Krishna about healing gynecological cancer, and finally I'll be covering one of the most controversial topics of our time and making a very special announcement. Part 1: What's The Deal with Lab-Grown Meat? With Bruce Friedrich Lab-grown meat, also known as cultured meat, is a big advancement in making food in a better way. Instead of raising lots of animals on farms, scientists grow just the muscle part of animals in labs. This helps solve problems like hurting animals and harming the environment. Lab-grown meat has great advantages: it can stop animals from suffering on farms, give us healthier meat, and help our planet by causing less pollution and using fewer resources. Bruce Friedrich is co-founder and executive director of The Good Food Institute (GFI.org), a nonprofit organization that promotes healthy and sustainable alternatives to industrially produced meat, dairy, and eggs. Bruce is the co-author of Clean Protein: The Revolution that Will Reshape Your Body, Boost Your Energy—and Save Our Planet Part 2: Taking a Holistic Approach to Gynecological Cancer with Dr. Deepika Krishna Dr. Deepika Krishna is an Integrative Health Coach and accomplished gynecologist, specializing in supporting people in their journey towards healing from chronic lifestyle ailments while promoting immunity and long-lasting well-being. Her expertise extends to gynecological cancers, and she places a strong emphasis on strengthening the body's defense mechanisms to ward off diseases, including cancer and other persistent health issues. Driven by personal experience, she embarked on a holistic mission to restore her own health after facing hormonal imbalances that traditional medical approaches couldn't resolve. This profound journey led her to recognize the importance of considering the entire body, rather than just symptoms, allowing her to better guide her patients towards comprehensive wellness. Her commitment to this approach is reflected in her work, aimed at empowering others to achieve optimal health and vitality. Sounak Gupta, M.B.B.S., Ph.D., explains how Mayo Clinic Laboratories' gynecological NGS panels provide focused assessments of gynecological cancers. The cost-effective tests fill the gap between single gene assays and large cancer panels, to inform prognosis and treatment. (00:32) Could you provide our listeners with a little bit about yourself and your background, please? (01:22) Could you give a brief overview of the new assays? (03:55) Can you talk a little about both the ovarian and gynecologic panel that will be in the new set of tests? (05:53) What patients will be impacted by this testing? (07:51) Can you speak to some of the individual genes in the gynecological area, such as POLE? (09:31) Is there anything else you would like to add?
In this episode Jonathan and Nyssa share some recent gynecology cases from their clinics using only acupuncture and moxibustion, and discuss the importance of nutrition in building healthy blood. They also discuss how Dr. Wang respected and uplifted acupuncture as a powerful medicine that deserved the status of herbs in the clinic. Hope you enjoy the conversation!

Joi and Deneisha are releasing an episode each week in March to highlight Black Women's Health. This week's episode features an interview with Dr. Gabi, a gynecologist based in the UK who is on a mission to save black women's wombs, by addressing the root cause of genecology disease, a disease that disproportionately affects black women worldwide. This racial disparity in health outcomes means that black women are more likely to suffer with genecology conditions that cause chronic pain and heavy bleeding. Black women also experience higher rates of infertility, maternal mortality and a final point of losing their wombs via hysterectomy compared to women of other races. Gynecological cancer is one of the leading causes of death in women. In the US, 100,000 cases are reported yearly, and 33,000 die from gynecological cancer annually. The numbers are significantly lower in the UK, but it is still a cause for concern. One of the major factors in the increasing number of cases is the lack of awareness and the stigma surrounding gynecological issues. So many of us don't even know what to ask our doctors. Plus, many women do not wish to undergo the often invasive screening procedure. Many are unaware that there are five types of gynecological cancer they can be susceptible to. So how can women get information and protect themselves? Welcome to the Scarlet Society podcast. In this episode, Stacey Lindsay speaks with Athena Lamnisos of The Eve Appeal, a leading cancer charity funding research and raising awareness of early diagnosis and prevention of gynecological cancers. Getting earlier detection right will have the most significant impact in terms of saving women's lives. Now is your chance to discover the truth about gynecological cancer and what you can do to better care for your body. “If you have a cervix, you need to be screened.” - Athena Lamnisos In This Episode: 00:00 Introduction from today's host, Stacey Lindsay 01:59 The mission and the work being done by Athena Lamnisos and her organization 06:43 What's the reason behind people's lack of awareness about the threat of gynecological cancer? 08:33 The five types of gynecological cancer, the risk factors, and the real reason women don't go on regular screening 12:43 The importance of being comfortable talking about our bodies 15:59 What should we ask our doctors, and what body changes must we pay attention to? 18:25 Have you been vaccinated against this pretty evil little virus called HPV? 24:15 How can we minimize the shame around getting examined for possible gynecological issues? 30:00 A powerful message for nonbinary individuals, trans men, and women over 40 (and just about anyone with female reproductive organs) 33:59 Support the work that Athena is doing through The Eve Appeal Resources: - https://eveappeal.org.uk/gynaecological-cancers/ (The Five Gynecological Cancers: A Brief Explainer) - https://eveappeal.org.uk/gynaecological-cancers/training-resources-for-gp-and-community-nurses/ (Training Resources for GP and Community Nurses) Connect with Athena Lamnisos and The Eve Appeal: - https://eveappeal.org.uk/ (Website) - https://www.instagram.com/eveappeal/ (Instagram) - https://web.facebook.com/eveappeal/ (Facebook) - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCNpe_IXpfvH3OqZCvA9imnQ (YouTube) Connect with Jade & Scarlet Society: -https://www.instagram.com/scarletsociety_official/ ( Instagram) -https://scarletsociety.com/ ( Website) -https://web.facebook.com/ScarletSocietyOfficial ( Facebook)

Roughly one in ten people with a uterus suffer from endometriosis, a painful gynecological condition that is also a leading cause of infertility during childbearing years. There is no cure for the disease, although surgery can help remove the painful uterine lesions associated with it.But now, scientists at Oregon State University and the Oregon Health and Science University are using microscopic nanoparticles to locate and treat endometriosis in an animal model. The procedure could one day lead to a non-surgical treatment for a condition that can start in adolescence and go undiagnosed for years. With us now to talk about their research is Oleh Taratula, a professor at the Oregon State University College of Pharmacy, and Ov Slayden, a reproductive biologist and a professor at Oregon Health & Science University.
