In the final installment of Colby’s anniversary series, Jeff and Lord Chandler sit down with local brewing legends Ryan Brooks, founder/brewmaster of SouthNorte Beer Co., and Jim Millea, head brewer at OB Brewery. These local brewing legends chat about the early homebrewing days that brought them together, their love of Baja, and share a story of the day how they almost died for beer... we’re not joking. Both Ryan and Jim talk about their connection to brewing in Mexico and discuss “business-as-unusual" in the days of COVID-19. Ryan Brooks: Ryan Brooks is the founder/brewmaster of SouthNorte Beer Co. He’s an internationally recognized beer judge and certified Cicerone. Brooks, formerly a touring metal drummer and award-winning homebrewer, worked at Malt Shovel Brewing Co. (Australia) and Black Market Brewing (Temecula) before starting at Coronado Brewing Co. in 2012. Eventually he worked his way up to brewmaster at Coronado. Under Brooks' leadership, Coronado won the extremely prestigious 2014 World Beer Cup Champion Mid-Size Brewery award. In 2017 Brooks founded SouthNorte at crossroads of Tijuana and San Diego bridging flavors of Mexico the San Diego craft. Jim Millea: Jim Millea is Head Brewer at OB Brewery in San Diego, CA and co-owner and brewer at Cerveceria El Destino in Valle de Guadelupe, Baja California, Mexico. Jim has been brewing professionally since 2014 when he was hired as assistant brewer at O'Sullivan Brothers Brewing Company. Before this, Jim was an avid home brewer and completed internships at Benchmark Brewing Company and Ballast Point Brewing Company. During his homebrewing days, Jim became a recognized beer judge through the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP) run by local San Diego homebrew club QUAFF (Quality Ale and Fermentation Fraternity). In 2015, Jim graduated from UCSD's Professional Certificate in Brewing Program. Originally from Massachusetts, Jim has been living in San Diego since 2000 and in Ocean Beach since 2008 where he currently resides. Since helping to build-out and now run OB Brewery, Jim has received several awards for his beers including bronze medals for both the Elevator Red IPA and Rooftop Saison at the 2018 San Diego International Beer Festival. At the Great American Beer Festival (GABF), Jim received a silver medal in 2017 for the Hidden Gem Dunkelweizen and a gold medal in 2018 for the B.Right.On Pale Ale. The 2018 gold medal win at GABF also scored Jim and OB Brewery the Small Brewpub Brewery and Small Brewpub Brewery of the year award. Jim hopes to continue making great beer in OB and is looking forward to making beer at the new venture in Baja that is now only in its very beginning stages.
The ILB Team virtually welcomes Kala Petitte from Ballast Point Brewing Company who provides us an update on all things Ballast Point, some brewery stories, what it's like coming up through the ranks, and what she loves about working at one of the premier breweries (and restaurants) in the San Diego area.
Yes, you read that right!Yes, the sale of Ballast Point Brewing Company to Constellation Brands is when our friends over at Beer Night in San Diego coined using #IndieBeer instead of craft. Yes, the initial blow back on social media from that was insane for those of us that adopted the effort right away. Yes, eventually, everyone came around. Yes, that's what lead to the Brewers Association making a symbol to help consumers understand which beers are produced by independent breweries. Yes, it is why we're called The Indie Beer Show; we wanted to be extremely clear in what we support! We're stoked this Mt. Rushmore of #SDBeer is once again a member of the indie beer family and we're welcoming them back the safest way we can, with a live stream show for all of you!The beers we'll be featuring in this show:HougoumontKings & Convicts Brewing Co. - Pilsner - German - 4.8% ABV - 23 IBUs - Full of character, this lightly hopped Pilsner has notes of citrus, squeezed Kiwifruit and nectar fruits.Swingin' Friar AleBallast Point Brewing Company - Pale Ale - American - 5.5% ABV -Manta RayBallast Point Brewing Company - IPA - Imperial / Double - 8.5% ABV - 70 IBUs - This new IPA rises above the rest. We've developed many IPA recipes in our R&D program, but right from the tank, our Manta Ray Double IPA was a winner. Aromas of fresh, citrusy tangerine, melon and light pine leap from the beer and linger over a smooth finish. Like its namesake, this brew can sneak up on you – a big beer without a bite.High West Barrel Aged 2017 Victory at SeaBallast Point Brewing Company - Porter - Imperial / Double Coffee - 12% ABV - 35 IBUs - High West Bourbon/Rye Blend aged for 7 months. Layers of complexity emerge with notes of soft caramel and smoky oak over a dark chocolate and roasted almond bodyWe hope you enjoy this audio version of the live stream and want to remind you to join us every Thursday night at 6:30 on our Facebook or YouTube channels to watch it all (and drink along with us)! Hey! Did you hear we hired someone new? We’re all excited to welcome Kate Bernot to the Good Beer Hunting team. She’s taking over as the lead at Sightlines, our news channel (don’t worry, Bryan Roth is still around, working on new projects and definitely making charts). Kate brings years of experience to the team, which she put to good use pretty much from the moment she started. On day one of Kate’s new job with GBH, it was announced that Ballast Point Brewing Company would be sold to Kings & Convicts Brewing Company, a brewery in Highwood, Illinois. I live in Chicago and I had to Google where that was—and collectively, so did the rest of Beer Twitter, essentially shutting down the Kings & Convicts website when the news broke. Kate had to write her very first article for us about one of the biggest news stories in beer EVER. As you probably know if you keep up with our site, Kate crushed it, reporting through all the noise that the news stirred up, and finding out some key facts that made clear how this sale was possible. Talk about on-the-job training—within hours of reporting for duty, Kate published one of the most comprehensive breakdowns of the Ballast Point sale out there. And today, we’re gonna learn more about how that story unfolded. Likewise, we’re gonna learn more about Kate herself—for all the messages and emails flying around during that Ballast Point article, this is the first time I get some time to chat with her. Along with her stellar work for previous beer publications and her penchant for asking simple and straightforward questions, we quickly learned we at the office were making one fundamental mistake.

Me and Matt are joined by our friend Jason and returning guest from season 1, Diego, to drink beers that have coffee as an adjunct. We even got to drink a beer that Diego helped pick out the coffee for from his coffee shop, Prismatic, located here in Albuquerque, NM. Craft Brew News - 12/13/19(Courtesy of Brewbound – www.brewbound.com)The Wine Group Chairman Backs Kings & Convicts in Ballast Point PurchaseRichard Mahoney, the chairman of the board of The Wine Group, is the lead investor in Chicagoland craft brewery Kings & Convicts’ acquisition of Ballast Point Brewing Company from Constellation Brands, according to the Chicago Tribune. The Wine Group’s 25 wine brands include Cupcake, Franzia, Flip Flop and Benziger.Since Constellation Brands announced the deal to unload Ballast Point, industry observers have pondered the sale price for the San Diego craft brewery that sold for $1 billion in cash just four years ago. Subscription-based newsletter Beer Business Daily reported that Credit Suisse analyst Kaumil Gajrawala pegged the transaction at under $100 million.According to financial services firm Cowen, Ballast Point sales are down 32% year-to-date.Brooklyn Brewery Restructures U.S. Sales StaffBrooklyn Brewery has restructured its U.S. sales team in an effort “to better reflect the realities of the current U.S. beer market,” the company announced this week.“Simply put, craft brewers have been putting too many resources into hand selling, and have been under-investing in the marketing and brand building sides of the business for too long,” the company said. “In some markets supplier reps outnumber distributor reps, with craft brewers continually adding staff and creating a headcount race that isn’t sustainable. We have not been immune to this problem, and today took the step to reduce our sales force to a more rational level.”In July 2017, Brooklyn announced plans to create a national sales and distribution platform with more than 150 sales personnel and brand ambassadors covering 38 states. As part of those plans, Brooklyn combined sales forces with California’s 21st Amendment (21A) and Colorado’s Funkwerks. Brooklyn, which sold a 24.5 percent stake to Japan’s Kirin Brewery in October 2016, acquired undisclosed minority stakes in both craft breweries.Constellation Brands CFO Named New CEO of Canopy GrowthCanadian Cannabis company Canopy Growth Corporation announced today the appointment of David Klein as CEO, effective January 14, 2020.Klein has served as the chief financial officer of Constellation Brands since mid-2015. Klein’s appointment as chief executive comes just two months after he was named chairman of the Canadian cannabis company’s board of directors. He will step down from his CFO role at Constellation upon assuming the Canopy CEO role.Canopy Growth and Constellation Brands have been intertwined since the New York-headquartered beer, wine and spirits company made its first investment of $191 million in the cannabis company in October 2017. All in, Constellation Brands has invested $4 billion in Canopy Growth for a 38% ownership stake in the company. The move comes a week before THC-infused beverages and edibles will become legal in Canada on December 17.Klein’s ascension to CEO follows a turbulent run for Canopy as the company’s financial results continued to underperform. Canopy announced in June that co-founder and co-CEO Bruce Linton had stepped down as CEO. Linton, however, told CNBC at the time that he was “terminated.”Constellation has recorded more than $590 million in losses on its $4 billion investment in Canopy, though CEO Bill Newlands expressed confidence in Canopy’s plans during Constellation’s third-quarter earnings call.Canada legalized recreational cannabis in October 2018.Foolproof Brewing Founder Lists Rhode Island Craft Brewery for SaleAfter seven years, Foolproof Brewing founder Nick Garrison is seeking a buyer for his Pawtucket, Rhode Island-based craft brewery.Garrison said, “It’s largely a personal decision,” After working for nearly a decade in the industry, it’s just time for the next chapter.”Garrison declined to share a selling price.Foolproof’s assets include its 30-barrel brewhouse and 1,000 sq. ft. taproom, as well as the building and land the brewery sits on.In 2018, Foolproof produced an estimated 3,120 barrels of its 10,000-barrel capacity brewery, although the company did not provide final volume data. Online education makes learning opportunities available for millions of people who otherwise would have very limited access to teachers, peers, and classrooms. As educators continue to explore all the ways we can use digital learning environments to better reach kids, we must search for ways to make the digital space as responsive and personal as a real teacher in a physical classroom. This month’s paper looks at how providing social cues in a digital setting improves student engagement and understanding. Later we read a paper provided by the community in comments on episode 011 For Whom Does the Bell Toll. How do the demands of curricula that can scale across many classrooms conflict with a school’s ability to provide autonomy for great teachers? We’ll read commentary from a blog post and provide professional literature to guide our next steps. Finally, our peer review segment will include a phone call from a colleague in California higher education. We’ll reflect on his comments and attempt to provide some follow-up questions to which you can respond. We drink Victory at Sea, an imperial, vanilla and coffee porter from Ballast Point Brewing Company.

Happy V-Day to all! This week on Friends Drink Beer, we try ‘Victory At Sea’ by Ballast Point Brewing Company based out of San Diego, CA. This Imperial Style Porter is a smooth brew with a distinct sweetness that isn’t too overbearing. It has added vanilla flavors as well as coffee beans from San Diego. (Ooooh did he say San Diego!?) It carries minimal acidity due to the cold brewed coffee and has an undertone of caramel from the malt. The boys are tackling a pillar of the west coast craft beer industry, and, arguably, the craft beer industry as a whole: Ballast Point. They take in some libations and guzzle down some grub at their new waterfront Long Beach location, taking in the beautiful view of the majestic Pacific Ocean...who’s imagery and wildlife are the very inspiration for Ballast Point’s nautical branding. Sold to Constellation Brands for 1 Billion dollars in 2015, is the now nationwide giant simply a “sell-out?” Or have they continued their commitment to experimentation and quality post corporate buy-out? Let’s dive into the likes of Sculpin IPA, Victory at Sea Stout, Fathom IPA, Grunion Pale Ale, and some experimental selections from the R&D section of their menu.

Joined again by our friend from Dunmore and beer enthusiast George Zvirblis, we have the pleasure of sampling some unique and sought-after beers this week – the Stone Brewing Company collaboration w00tstout 3.0 and Calm Before the Storm by Ballast Point Brewing Company. These are very different beers with very different flavors, so first we describe the origins of w00tstout, which was made with the help of Fark.com creator Drew Curtis and actor/blogger Wil Wheaton, and this inevitably leads into a discussion on the popularization of nerd culture and where it’s headed next. We also talk about Sylvester Stallone; how the Columbine High School shooting changed the way the public and the media looks at kids who are different; movies that influenced kids to do dumb things; lawsuits; “16 and Pregnant;” failed knockoff kids shows and franchises; how merchandising, product tie-ins, and collecting have changed over the years; Netflix’s “The Fall” versus “Dexter;” all the movie trailers and leaked videos that came out of San Diego Comic-Con; and how reviews can skew public opinion before people try something themselves. Derek Warren’s popular How to Pair Beer with Everything column on nepascene.com is now a podcast! Joined by NEPA Scene founder and editor Rich Howells, they’ll try a different brew each week and examine it through all the senses, diving into personal experiences and opinions, pop culture, news, or whatever comes to mind. While Derek is an experienced beer reviewer and aficionado (and co-host of the Beer Geeks Radio Hour on WILK 103.1 FM), Rich is more of a casual craft beer drinker (and co-host of the NEPA Scene Podcast), so they’ll both offer their own uncensored perspectives and ask guests to share their own. Every episode is available on iTunes, SoundCloud, Stitcher, and nepascene.com.
Ballast Point Brewing Company is yet another jewel in the crown of the San Diego craft brewing scene. One sip of their award winning beers and it is easy to see why they are so beloved! This was definitely a fun old school show to check out as we welcome Billy back to the fold and talk A LOT about beer!
