Professor Kathy Townsend knew she wanted to be a marine biologist from the age of five, and completed her very first dive in a frozen Canadian lake. But it was the moment a five-metre manta ray draped its tail over her shoulder like an affectionate cat that she knew she had truly found her calling.Since then, Kathy has followed manta rays around the world, appeared in a documentary with Sir David Attenborough, and even been swept into a swirling manta-ray feeding vortex. She greets her favourite mantas with a wink, and some even come to her for toothbrush scratches. But these intelligent and gentle giants are under threat. In this episode, Kathy shares the magic of manta rays, the mysteries scientists are still trying to solve, and why the race to understand and protect them has never been more urgent. We just HAD to make this a bonus-length episode because Kathy has SO many incredible stories about mantas which are absolutely not-to-be-missed!Thumbnail Image: Professor Townsend collecting a DNA sample with a toothbrush. This week on Inspire Campfire, Scott welcomes Martina Wing, founder of Manta Ray Advocates in Kona, Hawaii. Originally from Germany, Martina came to Hawaii during a difficult season of grief after losing her first husband to leukemia. What began as a trip for healing became the start of an entirely new life, shaped by the ocean, manta rays, and one unforgettable night dive.During that dive, Martina encountered manta rays for the first time and experienced something she could not fully explain at the time: awe, wonder, and a sense that life still had more ahead. That moment eventually led her to move to Hawaii, marry the man who filmed her first manta ray experience, and build a purpose-driven business centered on education, conservation, and responsible manta ray encounters. In this conversation, Martina shares how Manta Ray Advocates creates small-group, ethical night snorkeling experiences, why manta rays are often misunderstood, and how years of close observation have helped her build a deep knowledge of individual animals. She also opens up about grief, purpose, entrepreneurship, her viral dolphin rescue video, and the quiet power of being in the presence of the natural world.

Marine Wildlife Victory: Why New Protections for Manta Rays and Sharks Change Everything

Speak Up For The Ocean Blue

Marine Wildlife Victory raises a powerful question: what does it take to finally protect some of the ocean's most threatened giants, and why did it take this long? In this episode, you will hear how manta rays, devil rays, and several shark species faced years of intense pressure from overfishing and international trade, and why the world finally agreed they needed stronger protection. The emotional turning point comes when we uncover that manta ray gill plates were so valuable in global markets that populations were declining faster than conservationists could respond. Shark Conservation reveals how Appendix II regulations helped stabilize some species but were not strong enough to stop the decline. You will learn how international demand for shark fins pushed species like hammerheads and threshers to the brink, and why Appendix I status is such a game changer. One of the most surprising insights is how early, modest protections actually proved the concept that stronger measures work, giving global leaders the justification they needed to upgrade these species to the highest level of protection. Ocean Protection Efforts highlight where this victory fits in the bigger story. This isn't just about sharks and rays; it is about a shift in how the world values marine wildlife. These new protections cut off the legal international trade that fueled decades of exploitation, giving these animals a real chance at recovery while ensuring local conservation efforts have a fighting chance. This week, we fire up the retroscope and revisit one of sci-fi cinema's most iconic invasions: George Pal's War of the Worlds (1953). From its long and winding road to production to the unforgettable cobra-headed Martian war machines, we explore how this Cold War-era classic redefined alien terror for the big screen. You'll hear how producer George Pal—Hollywood's original sci-fi visionary—brought H.G. Wells' Victorian apocalypse into postwar Southern California, swapping tripods for manta rays and existential dread for atomic-age spectacle. We break down the casting of Gene Barry as Dr. Clayton Forrester, surrounded by a rich ensemble of veteran character actors, and how their grounded performances helped sell the surreal. We also dive into the film's bold departures from the novel: The shift in setting and tone The redesign of the Martians and their technology  And of course, we spotlight the unforgettable war machine design by art director Albert Nozaki—those sleek, levitating death-dealers with cobra-like necks and heat rays that helped the film win an Oscar for Best Visual Effects. Listen to this remarkable story of how this new species was first spotted off the Yucatán Peninsula, how it differs from other mantas, and why its recognition is a crucial win for marine conservation. Te whai rahi are long-lived, slow to breed, and only give birth to a single pup every 2-5 years. This slow and steady approach means they struggle to recover from the impact of fishing and are now listed as an endangered species on the IUCN Red List.
