Breweries don't need more data – they need better insights. Every day, breweries collect data on production, ingredient usage, brewing yields, equipment utilization, and more, but the challenge lies in making sense of it all. This session will demonstrate how data visualization can cut through the noise, helping breweries uncover hidden opportunities, reduce inefficiencies, and improve profitability. We'll begin by addressing the common pain points breweries face: siloed data, lack of actionable insights, and the frustration of unseen problems compounding. Using real-world examples, we'll showcase how data visualization turns complex data into clear, actionable insights – empowering brewery leaders to quick identify and address key issues like high production losses, rising costs, and underutilized equipment.Attendees will see how tracking metrics like cost per barrel, beer loss trends, and brew-to-pack timelines can drive smarter decisions. We'll also explore how these capabilities align teams, foster accountability, and provide clarity on targets and next steps. Attendees will leave with practices to implement immediately in their breweries, whether it's aligning their data, visualizing data, refining processes, or identifying areas of cost savings. This session will empower breweries to operate smarter, faster, and more effectively – giving them a competitive edge in today's tough market. As the Founder of Central Coast Analytics, Jeremy is revolutionizing how craft breweries interact with data. With 20 years of experience in analytics, he develops cutting-edge solutions that provide breweries and other industry partners with critical performance insights at their fingertips. His work enables clients to quickly see a holistic overview of their business and effortlessly drill in to uncover actionable insights. Jeremy's passion lies in helping breweries transform data from a headache into a strategic advantage, empowering breweries to make smarter, data-driven decisions.Pulkit K. Before we get to our guest for this episode, I wanted to take a minute and thank those of you who carve out time to listen to this podcast every few weeks. It is a labor of love for me – and I get to have some great conversations with the fine people in the world of craft beer and beverages, but it is not my day job and it takes time to create this show. Recently, the BeerWise Podcast brought home a Gold Crushie – an award for “crushing it” in the field of craft beer marketing. According to the Craft Beer Marketing Awards organization, a gold Crushie is given “To award a 2023 CBMAS Gold Crushie, the judges' panel will be seeking entries that meet or exceed the defined category objectives by using strategy, creativity, and innovative production techniques to achieve a perceived, higher level of uniqueness.”I am extremely proud to have earned this award from those currently marketing in the beer industry, and excited to keep bringing you the words and stories of the amazing and awesome people in the beverage industry and beyond. Speaking of the great people in the beer industry and their stories… In this episode, I am joined by Ryan Sentz of Funky Buddha Brewery in Oakland Park, Florida. Ryan is the founder and soon-to-be-owner of Funky Buddha Brewery – a brewery that made a name by bringing intense flavors into beer that many could not believe. The beer that introduced many people to the brewery was Maple Bacon Coffee Porter, a beer that did not contain actual bacon, but made many wonder how such flavors were possible. From small beginnings, brewing beer in a lounge in Boca Raton to an expansion that brought the brewery into their current home, a 54,000 sq-ft facility with a 30-barrel brewhouse. In 2017, Constellation Brands, the international company who imports Corona and Modelo beer brands, had recently bought Ballast Point Brewing in San Diego and then news broke that Funky Buddha Brewery was being acquired as well. Funky Buddha Brewery remained entrenched in their local community with Ryan and his team still running the brewery with Constellation Brands as the brewery's owner. Fast forward to 2023 and Ryan and KC announce that they will be buying back Funky Buddha Brewery from Constellation Brands. Constellation Brands sells their craft breweries and exits the craft beer business, focusing on other brands of beer that they own. Ryan and KC re-enter the world of brewery ownership in one of the most competitive times in history for craft beer. This was one of the focuses of our conversation. Ryan was also nice enough to give me his hot take about other news that broke this week – the news that Sapporo, the Japanese brewer who owns San Francisco's Anchor Brewing, will be cutting back Anchor's distribution to California only and will be discontinuing Anchor's storied Christmas beer called Our Special Ale. I wanted his opinion on this topic as someone returning to brewery ownership after a hiatus. Here's our conversation. You can listen to the podcast online here or on your favorite podcast platform. (NSFW) In this episode, the Hoppy Craftsmen are on location at Patent 139, one of Chandler's newest breweries. They sit down with the owner, Tim Hass, and chat about how his family legacy helped shape his path to opening Patent 139 Brewing. Of course, they put him through the rapid round, which, as always, wasn't so rapid. The guys then delve into Tim's background of working at high-end resorts and restaurants, including his time at Ballast Point Brewing, where he was involved in the remodeling and opening of its Long Beach location before eventually being placed at Ballast Point's location at the Happiest Place on Earth. But that's not all – the guys also learn how Tim returned to the Valley of the Sun and how the idea of opening a brewery came into play. And, as an added bonus, Tim shares the meaning behind the name Patent 139, which refers to his grandfather's invention of the Hass avocado. The triumphant return of Kegs N Eggs from Ballast Point Brewing!
Perhaps it's because we've been trapped in our houses and then our cities and counties and states for too long, but my mind has been on San Diego a lot lately. In recent episodes, we've had some great guests from the area and today is no exception. About 2 years ago, a small earthquake shook the craft beer world. Ballast Point, whose sale only a few years earlier for a billion dollars to Constellation, had gobsmacked everyone from the tap room on Main Street to Wall Street board rooms, had unexpectedly been sold again. This time to a tiny little brewery outside of Chicago that absolutely no one had heard of. The story seemed crazy and I certainly thought the whole situation was a bit nuts. But as it turns out, the new owners weren't crazy, just smart, experienced business people with a vision for the future. At first glance, Brendan Watters seems to be quite a character. With his Australian accent, wide brimmed outback hat, and mile wide smile, Brendan appears on the surface an unlikely person to purchase a brewery once valued at a cool billion dollars. But the aphorism about books and covers should be kept in mind. Because behind the camp is a successful, credentialed businessman with the right timing and connections to get this deal done. He has recommitted the company to the local San Diego market and is building back the loyalty and respect of San Diegans piece by piece. And by most accounts, this improbable story appears on the way to a happier ending. Local beer writers are impressed with how Brendan and his team have operated Ballast Point and with their future plans. Two years on, the Ballast Point story continues to evolve and Brendan is at the center of it. And he's not done yet. While he plays a bit coy about future prospects, Brendan and his team appear ready to continue purchasing craft breweries in the years to come.In this episode, Brendan and I discuss his background in business and why he and his partner Chris Bradley started Kings and Convicts in their putative retirement, how the Ballast Point sale came to be, and how he and his partners have worked to regain the trust of Ballast Point's employees and consumers. For more information on the Beer Edge Podcast, follow us on Twitter @thebeeredge. Chrissie Pinney is the director of operations at Hana Koa Brewing Co., and she was previously in sales at Ballast Point Brewing. Hana Koa is 10,000 square feet, half of it is the brewing facility and the other half is the kitchen and dining area. Her and her husband, Josh Kopp moved from California to open Hana Koa as he is the head brewer for the company. The idea to build the brewery initially started as a joke after Josh's father bought the Kakaako warehouse space. Since their opening in 2019, they serve exclusive brews, including IPA, stout and blonde varietes, and also wine and food on their menu. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To Learn more about The Art of Beer visit: https://www.theartofbeer.com/ The Art of Beer is a https://www.wikiocast.com/ production. HAPPY ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY TO COMPICALLY INCOMPETENT! This week to celebrate one year of the show Grayson and I talk about an old classis that brought us together! We also enjoy a classic beer from Ballast Point Brewing!
The leaders of Ballast Point Brewing discuss their journey from running small upstart craft brewery Kings & Convicts, to making one of the biggest acquisitions of 2019. CEO Brendan Watters and COO Chris Bradley shared the challenges they faced as they were handed the keys to Ballast Point from Constellation Brands just two days before the COVID-19 pandemic shut down on-premise establishments nationwide, including Ballast Point’s six retail locations across California and Illinois. The conversation covers operating in an unstable business climate, maintaining the culture of one of San Diego’s largest and most established craft breweries and leading a workforce of more than 500.
Jeff sits down with Lord Chandler (yes, that is his actual title) for a three-part anniversary series to celebrate 23 years. This episode they’re joined by Chris White, President and CEO of White Labs and Tom Nickel, Owner/Brewer of O'Brien's Pub, Nickel Beer Company, and West Coast Smoke and Tap House. Colby, Tom and Chris reflect on the early years of their friendship and chat about what makes San Diego such a strong brewing community. Flash backs to the days of sharing recipes and learning through books before the internet existed abound! Tom and Chris delve deeper into the beginnings of their businesses, the effects of different yeasts in beers and how brewing has shaped their lives. Later, Tom uses his medieval studies degree to dissect the true meaning of Lord Chandler’s newest titles and the four talk about Colby’s career over his 23 years with Ballast Point. Chris White: Chris White lives in San Diego, CA, where he serves as President and CEO of White Labs Inc. Chris founded White Labs in 1995 to manufacture yeast cultures and provide fermentation services to the brewing, wine, and distilling industries. Chris has a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of California San Diego and a B.S. in Biochemistry from the University of California Davis. While at Davis, Chris did a summer internship at Genentech Inc, the world's first biotechnology company. White is coauthor of Yeast: The Practical Guide to Beer Fermentation, co-designer of BrewMaster: The Craft Beer Game, and has published numerous articles on yeast, beer, and fermentation. Chris White was a lecturer in the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department at UC San Diego from 1999-2007 and is currently teaching in Brewing Certificate Program at UC San Diego Extension. Chris was awarded the 2013 Recognition award from the American Homebrewers Association. Tom Nickel: Tom started homebrewing at the age of 18, shopping at Home Brew Mart, before he could legally buy a beer. He ended up working there for nearly three years during the time that Ballast Point Brewing was opened. In 1997 he went to work for Pizza Port with Tomme Arthur and later become the head brewer at Oggi's Pizza where he won the 2004 World Beer Cup Small Brewing Company of the Year with Jeff Bagby. Tom bought O'Brien's from founder Jim O'Brien in 2003 and has now partnered with Tyson Blake to run the pub. Realizing a dream that began in 1995, he opened Nickel Beer Company in Julian in 2013. Tom spends most of his time in Julian enjoying life above 4000 feet. Colby's favorite fact about Tom is that he earned a degree in Medieval History from Yale University (and yes, he studied monks who made beer).
We’re here at Ballast Point Brewing in Little Italy, and today, we have Colby Chandler, Ballast Point’s vice president and specialty brewer. Colby is the second-longest employee of Ballast Point—he’s been with the company for 23 years. He was involved in the creation of their award-winning flagship beer, Sculpin, where he took two gold-medal-winning IPAs and melded the recipes into one. His version of their two beers is the Sculpin you know today. Today’s special guest is Chef Travis Swikard. Travis is opening one of the city's most anticipated restaurants, Callie, in the East Village, which we talk about in the Neighborhood Guide in the March issue. Callie is filling the space on Tenth Avenue where Bottega Americano was. Travis grew up in Santee, and he recently moved back to San Diego after working in New York City with acclaimed French chef Daniel Boulud for over a decade. Travis wanted to get back to local, fresh ingredients and a place to raise his two kids. Callie is his first solo restaurant. For Two People, $50, Travis chose Don Bravo, a small taco shop in La Jolla. David chose Tabu Shabu in North Park, and Erin liked happy hour at The Prado. Troy’s pick this week are the frittelle cacio e pepe (savory Italian donuts) from Cori Pastificio Trattoria in North Park, which he reviewed for our upcoming April issue. In Hot Plates, we talk about Prep Kitchen closing its doors in Little Italy, and Rock Bottom ending its run after being in UTC for over 20 years. Normal Heights is getting a “hipster 7-Eleven” that’s going to open soon, complete with craft beer, a fro-yo bar, taco shop, and of course, kombucha on tap. In this episode of Brew Strong, Justin Crossley fills in for Jamil Zainasheff to cover a new topic with John Palmer. They welcome Aaron Justus, Director of R&D and Specialty Brewing, at Ballast Point Brewing, to talk about his recent paper, Tracking IBU Through the Brewing Process: The Quest for Consistency. Published by the Master Brewers Association of the Americas, Aaron's research tackles the difficult question of why there are often large discrepancies between calculated IBU (bitterness), and resulting IBU in finished beer. After more than two years researching and collecting data, Aaron and his team made several surprising discoveries and formulated a method to calculate for the changes in bitterness they were observing. Listen in to learn about this fascinating study and learn how you can gain better control over calculating IBU in your craft beer and homebrewing endeavors. Learn more about your ad choices. Stephanie Lallement from Ballast Point Brewing joins Tanner, Jared, and Alan on their return episode from Thanksgiving. She brings several of Ballast's delicious beers, including one that hadn't been had here in town quite yet.
In Ep#24 we tepidly talk about Morten Tyldum's Passengers (2016). We liked it (really we did!), but you'd be hard pressed to glean that from the episode. It's just a solid Sci-Fi flick. Nothing shockingly great. Positively nothing shockingly bad either. Tony wants to play horseshoes with Chris Pratt IRL. Eddie would rather just have a beer with JLaw. If you've got a date night to plan, grab some beers and rent this movie, or grab some beers and listen to this episode. Wait, do both. But watch the movie first.
Stephanie from Ballast Point Brewing Company joins us to drink more than a few of their beers.

Season 3, Episode 51 – This week, we find out who will rein supreme in the battle between the Light side of the sea, and the Dark side. Does anyone else smell fish? What is that? Oh, pshht…I know what it is. It’s a Sculpin from Ballast Point Brewing, and an Invasive Species from Beachwood Brewing! We invited both of these underwater dwellers to battle it out on the show this week, with hopes of figuring out which one of these is the bigger fish to fry. The Beachwood/Ballast Point Showdow A little back story: once upon a time, Ballast Point Brewing out of San Diego, California, was one the most respected craft brewers in the San Diego beer scene, until the company was sold to Constellation Brands, Inc. for a cool one billion clams (snicker). Since then, many beer geeks have written the brewery off as a “sell out” and stopped buying their products, and some have decided to overlook the buyout and just focus on the beer. But, just because a brewery sells to a larger macro brewery or company doesn’t necessarily mean the quality of their product will suffer, although sometimes recipes and practices tend to change over time to drive down cost and increase profit. In the case of Ballast Point, the beers are still pretty great for the most part. Enter Beachwood Brewing. Beachwood has been very vocal about their brewing independence and dedication to true craft beer. In a very tongue-in-cheek move, they decided to brew a series of beers that were inspired by Ballast Point’s Sculpin IPA and variants thereof, that positioned Beachwood to both comment on and snub Ballast Point and their wildly popular fruited beers. While they didn’t come out and blatantly say “fuck you,” to Ballast Point (for whatever reason, outside of the obvious craft vs. macro battle cry), the line of beers they brewed and subsequently named “Invasive Species” (with a depiction of a dead fish on the beer bottle’s label) sure did imply it. Fight! So, here we are. We purchased the freshest Sculpin IPA and variants of Sculpin IPA (and Even Keel) that we could find and put them up against the two-week-old bottles of Beachwood’s Invasive Species IPA and variants. Who will prevail? You can probably guess who we’re rooting for… BREW THE SHIT OUT OF IT. Season 3, Episode 17 – Today, the 2016 California IPA Showdown. It’s been a while since our last showdown, and we’ve wrestled with how we are going to handle IPA for a long time now. Initially, we thought about trying to get the best of the best IPA from around the country and compare them all blind. The challenge there is it’s nearly impossible to get beer from all over the place, at an acceptable level of freshness, in one place at one time. Plus, as fun as it is to read about a magical elixir from a brewery thousands of miles away that drinks of pure unobtainium, what about something a bit easier to come by? Enter the CA Shelf IPA Showdown! 2016 IPA Showdown Beers These beers are all from California. They’re all IPAs and all widely and readily available. Hell, they’re probably sitting in your local grocer dying a slow painful death. So we set out to determine the king of the hill. The Method While we knew which beers were in the pool, we had our good friend Dr Zack administer the tasting for us totally blind. We didn’t know what we were drinking when we rated it, and we revealed at the end. We each rated the beer 1-100 using our completely arbitrary personal preference scales, and averaged those ratings to get a total. All of these beers were well within acceptable freshness range (The oldest bottle had a bottling date of 2/9/2016 which was less than 2 months before recording) and were purchased at our old standby Gerrard’s Market in Redlands, CA. All of the beer at this store is kept in a walk in cooler, so conditions were about as ideal as we’re going to get. But all of this beer was purchased, by us, off the shelf, and not provided by the brewery. The Rankings #9 Lagunitas Brewing Company – IPA Average Score: 56.75 Distribution: 48 states Lagunitas Brewing Company – IPA Lagunitas IPA may hail from California, but you can probably get it at your local gas station. This beer is available in 48 states in the US, and likely the only IPA on at the janky bar down the way from you that got one of these IPAs that people keep talking about. In this field of CA standbys, Lagunitas disappointed. We were impressed with the clarity, but minimal hop presence combined with a maltier than average backbone and astringent flavors led this beer to rank a full 10 points below the next lowest ranking beer. #8 Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. – Torpedo Extra IPA Average Score: 65.75 Distribution: Everywhere Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. – Torpedo Extra IPA Probably the only beer more ubiquitous than Lagunitas IPA is Sierra Nevada’s venerable Torpedo. This beer is available in all 50 states and Washington DC! It’s also doing pretty poorly against it’s CA born peers. We thought the beer was appropriately old school. Aroma notes included citrus, pine and crackery sweet malt character, but the flavor fell flat with our field. Too much sweet caramel malt, limited hop presence and an overall flat, bitter character dropped this standby near the bottom of the field. #7 Stone Brewing Co. – Stone IPA Average Score: 71.75 Distribution: 43 states Stone Brewing Co. – Stone IPA Stone IPA is a standby in California and beyond, acting as an aggressive example of the West Coast IPA style. We found it aggressive indeed – flavor descriptors include words like bracing, challenging, boozy and unrefined. While overall we enjoyed the beer, we found the rough around the edges approach to IPA to be limiting and knocked it down in the field. #6 AleSmith Brewing Company – IPA Average Score: 73.25 Distribution: 15 States AleSmith Brewing Company – IPA AleSmith IPA has been discussed on 4B before in a Going in Blind segment. It continues to vex the show, convincing Greg that he was drinking Stone IPA until the reveal showed him to be dead wrong. This beer scored high marks from John and Jason for being a classicly bitter “San Diego style” West Coast IPA, but didn’t do as hot with Matt and Greg. #5 Bear Republic Brewing Co. – Racer 5 IPA Average Score: 79.375 Distribution: 28 states Bear Republic Brewing Co. – Racer 5 IPA Racer 5 from Bear Republic has been the low key stand by west coast IPA for several years now. We were able to pick out a lot of different aroma notes, and kept finding different aroma descriptors the more we tried it. While it registered high notes with most of our crew, Jason was a dissenter and was so put off by the odd sweet aftertaste and diesel aroma notes that he knocked it down to his 3rd lowest beer of the day. Jason’s 66 score knocked it down from an 83.83 (and second place) into 5th. From a beer that has roots tracing back into the 1990s, Racer 5 made a very strong showing. #4 Alpine Beer Company – Duet Average Score: 79.5 Distribution: 6 states Alpine Beer Company – Duet We went in depth comparing Alpine Duet vs. Green Flash Duet way back in season 2, episode 32, and we had high praises for both versions then. Some might think that having the smallest distribution footprint (even after the Green Flash acquisition) would give this beer an unfair advantage, but the gang was divided on this beer in this showdown. Jason and John really liked it and considered it an above average beer. Greg and Matt, on the other hand, thought it was fairly ho hum. In the end, Alpine Duet scored solidly and placed above the middle of the field. #3 Green Flash Brewing Company – West Coast IPA Average Score: 82 Distribution: 46 states Green Flash Brewing Company – West Coast IPA While it kinda seems like a double up to have Green Flash and Alpine in the same showdown, the West Coast IPA is a classic and acts as a solid representative of the style. But you wouldn’t know that to listen to our notes, as we made it a huge point to talk about how not West Coast the beer is. It was a bit maltier and danker than we expected, and while our initial reactions were a bit reserved, upon digging into our glasses we came to really enjoy it. We didn’t absolutely love the aroma, but the flavor really brought us around. Between this beer and Alpine at number 4, Green Flash made a strong showing as a brewery. #2 Ballast Point Brewing and Spirits – Sculpin IPA Average Score: 82.5 Distribution: 34 states Ballast Point Brewing and Spirits – Sculpin IPA Sculpin is the beer that really put Ballast Point on the map after their World Beer Cup Win in 2010. It quickly rocketed from a limited seasonal beer into a flagship and now one of the most readily available IPAs in the markets that get Ballast Point. An established favorite with Jason, this beer impressed the gang with it’s more modern IPA style and tropical fruit notes. Greg appreciated the malt character while Jason liked the lingering dankness. It hit everyone’s palate in a just the right way that took led it to barely edge out the competition from Green Flash. #1 Firestone Walker Brewing Company – Union Jack IPA Average Score: 89 Distribution: 22 states Firestone Walker Brewing Company – Union Jack IPA Union Jack is considered by Matt to be the Rodney Dangerfield of the California IPA world. While very widely available, it does not usually get a lot of accolades from the beer world. It also suffered from being the oldest beer in our flight, bottled on 2/9/2016! Despite that, this beer wowed us. We loved the aroma, and loved the beer in just about every way. It seemed to walk the tightrope between malty and dry, hoppy and bitter, and came in right in the sweet spot for our palates. It was the second highest rated beer from John, and the highest rated from Matt, Jason and Greg. Despite being counted out by Jason going into the showdown, Firestone continues their dominance in 4B Blind Showdowns and tops the podium again. We promise we’re not getting kickbacks from them, you guys. In case you wanted to see the individual scores, here it is: The IPA Showdown Score Sheet So, there you have it. BREW THE SHIT OUT OF IT. 00:00:00 - This week is dedicated to an interview Ryan did with PhD student Zeka Kuspa, who studies environmental toxicology as it affects California condor restoration. The first part of the interview covers the basics of California condors, their conservation history, and the problems they face due to lead poisoning. 00:39:01 - It take us a little bit but we do finally get to the drinks. Zeka, per her policy of only drinking beers with animals on the label, is enjoying a Sculpin from Ballast Point Brewing. Ryan, thinking that raptors often have those cool little hoods on, has the Blindfold Black IPA from Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. 00:43:17 - The secondpart of our interview focuses a bit about their project called Condor Watch which is part of Zooniverse and helps researchers get the public involved in analyzing the data from California condor camera traps. You, yes you, can sign up today to be a part of helping keep California's burgeoning condor population healthy and growing strong! 00:47:15 -PaleoPOWs are a lot like vultures, they scavenge the really tasty bits, and tend to live in groups. In the except that proves the rule, only one PaleoPOW this week in the form of a recurring donation from Francis D. Thanks for supporting the show, Francis! Thanks for listening and be sure to check out the Brachiolope Media Network for more great science podcasts! Music for this week's show: My Turtledove - Zeka Kuspa (definitely the first and probably only time a guest will provide the song for their interview)
Today, we're looking at influence and marketing through the lens of the craft beer industry with brewer and brand ambassador for Ballast Point Brewing Co., Jeff Lozano.Jeff Lozano left a career in nursing to get his foot in the door of the San Diego brewing industry any way he could. He started as a weekend night-shift janitor at Ballast Point and worked his way up to brewer within three years.
