http://www.UnderThePuppet.com - On February 2, 2025, Under The Puppet along with past show guest Christine Papalexis, the Los Angeles Guild of Puppetry and Bob Baker Marionette Theater held a live episode recording celebrating the puppeteers of Pee Wee's Playhouse. This event sold out in less than 10 minutes and is, as of this recording, the fastest sell out Bob Baker Marionette Theater has ever had. And how can it not be when you bring together Wayne White, Ric Heitzman, George McGrath, Alison Mork and Kevin Carlson who are responsible for bringing to life some of the most beloved television characters of all time. I'm incredibly happy to present the audio recording of that evening on this episode of Under The Puppet. We'd also like to take a moment to acknowledge the passing of Lynne Stewart who played Ms. Yvonne on Pee Wee's Playhouse. This event was recorded before her passing on February 21, 2025 but as you'll hear, she meant a lot to those who worked on the show. We send out our thoughts to Lynne Stewart's family and to all who knew her and were lucky enough to work with her. She is, was and always will be the most beautiful women in puppet land. Santa Monica celebrates Pride Month today with the first in-person festival since 2019. LA public schools get out for the summer this coming week. And voting has begun in the special election in the LA City Council's sixth district in the San Fernando Valley. Recently we asked you, our listeners and readers, for your thoughts on the job facing LA's new mayor, Karen Bass. We received thousands of responses, and we'll talk about the key takeaways of the survey. Then, L.A.'s famous Bob Baker Marionette Theater's long-running puppet show – ¡Fiesta! – is here through the end of June. It now has an updated look and sound thanks to two new directors, who literally grew up coming to the show. We'll tag along with the How To LA crew to learn more about it. Support The L.A. #92: The Bob Baker Marionette Theater is a legit L.A. institution. It opened in 1963 in Echo Park and, after the first building was sold to a real-estate developer, it reopened in Highland Park in 2019.Now, it might not seem like an obvious place to connect with Latino and LGBT communities in L.A., but you might be surprised! When HTLA producer Victoria Alejandro took our host Brian De Los Santos to the theater's ¡Fiesta! puppet show, they were delighted by what they discovered. Bob Baker himself created ¡Fiesta! 50 years ago as a "love letter" to Latin America. It was, according to the theater's website, inspired by his neighbors in L.A. and his mostly Latino team of puppeteers. The show recently got a much needed contemporary update from two new directors, Daisy Hernandez and Karina De La Cruz, who also happened to grow up going to the theater. They join How to LA host Brian De Los Santos to talk about what BBMT meant to them as kids and why the art of puppetry is still such a draw for them professionally. The whole experience of seeing the show at BBMT was a special kind of magic for Brian who admits he was a little skeptical when our producer pitched this idea. You'll have to listen to the podcast to hear why it continues to make an impact on audiences young and old across L.A. Guests: Daisy Hernandez, stage manager at Bob Baker Marionette Theater and co-director of ¡Fiesta!, and Karina De La Cruz, puppeteer and co-director of ¡Fiesta!

We'll cover the El Segundo Old Town Music Hall (18:11), the Pacific Dining Car (44:27), the Bob Baker Marionette Theater (1:04:01) and Vroman's Bookstore (1:46:45). Happy New Year!
This week, Nadia and Steve talk to Corporate writer Caroline Anderson (@carolineeand) about the specific topic of the Bob Baker Marionette Theater, the oldest running marionette puppet theater in America. How did Bob Baker influence Disneyland, the Muppets, future puppeteers, LGBTQ youth, and more? Which sexy cat puppet makes us horniest? How does Dracula walk you down the aisle? Let's do this again some time!

Lucas Deranian poses as their uncle in order to get the kids into the clutches of Deranian's megalomaniacal boss, evil millionaire Aristotle Bolt, who wants to exploit them. Jason, a cynical widower, helps Tia and Tony "escape to witch mountain," while at the same time Tia and Tony help Jason escape the pain of the loss of his wife.○ Film Trivia - IMDB■ The character of Tia in the flashback sequences was played by Kim Richards' real-life younger sister Kyle Richards.■ Kim Richards and Ike Eisenmann, who play the children in this movie and in Return from Witch Mountain (1978), appeared in a scene in Race to Witch Mountain (2009). Eisenmann is "Sheriff Antony" in the bar, and Richards is "Tina" the waitress. In this movie and its 1978 sequel, their names were similar: "Tony" and "Tia", respectively.■ At one point during the fight scene between Tony and Truck, Dermott Downs punched the bat so hard, it hit Ike Eisenmann. In some scenes, despite the make-up department's best efforts, you can see a greenish bruise under his left eye.■ Knowing that it was an integral part of the story, Ike Eisenmann (Tony) bought a harmonica and taught himself to play it, unaware that he would be dubbed in the end by professional harmonica player Tommy Morgan.■ The primary cat who portrayed Winky was temperamental and difficult with which to work, particularly for Ike Eisenmann (Tony), who sustained numerous cuts and scratches from the feline.■ The Pine Woods Orphanage was actually Peninsula School of Creative Education in Menlo Park, California. The secluded sixty-room mansion was built in 1880 and converted into a school in 1925. There are countless stories of hauntings in the mansion, which were played up in the original press materials for this movie.■ The marionettes from the playroom sequence continue to be used for performances at the Bob Baker Marionette Theater, which has been designated as a historic landmark in Los Angeles, California.■ The name of the mysterious item that Tia carried around, which contained a map, was a "star case". Tia's star case, which housed the map to Witch Mountain, had an additional purpose in the novel. In Key's novel, Tia was mute (but communicate telepathically with Tony) and carried pencils and paper in the star case to write notes to people.■ In one scene, Tony and Tia go on an outing to see the movie Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937).● Segment: News/Announcements “The Newsies Banner”○ New Jim Henson series “earth to Ned” coming to Disney +○ Rise of Skywalker Ticket Sales prove fan boycott to be empty threat■ When tickets for The Rise of Skywalker went on sale this past Monday, media outlets were quick to publish stories that the film’s pre-sales outpaced Avengers: Endgame for its first hour on Atom Tickets. This caused the TLJ fans to claim victory over the boycotters and tout that their side has won. Alex Evans is the executive director and head puppeteer at the historic Bob Baker Marionette Theater. While studying film making in college in NY, Alex came to LA and spent a semester interning with an aging Bob Baker, who passed away 4 years ago. In the time since his death, Alex has helped the theater navigate a huge move from Echo Park to Highland Park and transition to operating as a non-profit organization, while leading an ambitious schedule of shows packed with puppet programming. This theater is one of my favorite things about living in LA! How a full time marionette theater still survives in our tech-obsessed culture is no small feat! In this week’s episode, we bring in Aaron Bonilla, an actor, turned playwright, turned puppet master. Aaron discovered his love of puppetry after doing his one man show, “It’s Okay to Like Porn”, based on his life working in an adult book store. You might have seen him and his marionettes at the Bob Baker Marionette Theater, or him manipulating puppets reliving shit that happened to celebrities, by celebrities, on “The Hollywood Puppet Show” hosted by Wilmer Valderama (formerly known as “The Hollywood Puppet Shit Show”) on Fuse and Amazon Prime. The most amazing part is Aaron is self-taught, he learned everything he knows from books, and even creates his own puppets! Another huge thank you to Armean Khezri for letting us monopolize his apartment to record. We love you!
