This is Phil Woodford in London and I'd like to say a big thank you to our two resident lawyers, Bob McAra and Kola Sonaike, for standing in for me over the past couple of weeks. MICHAEL And joining Phil for this landmark show today, it's me - Michael Ohajuru - revealing that we have a very special guest. It's none other than playwright, author, media personality and everyone's favourite intellectual, Bonnie Greer! We'll welcome her properly in just a minute. And for our first story, we're going to be looking at the so-called ‘Windsor Framework' for Northern Ireland. Has Rishi Sunak found a way out of the post-Brexit impasse? And why is the Biden administration so interested in developments on the other side of the Atlantic? PHIL Our second story this week is the hullabaloo over words getting changed in books. First it was Roald Dahl being made politically correct for the 21st century. Then, there were reports of James Bond author Ian Fleming having his words both shaken and stirred. Essential adaptation for a modern audience? Or the ‘woke' rewriting of history? MICHAEL What's story number three today? Well, it's our old friend ChatGPT. School students taking particular exams will be allowed to get the talkative AI to write essays for them! PHIL For our fourth story, there's been a revival in medieval medical cures, such as leeches and maggots. Michael probably remembers them from the first time around. MICHAEL And to conclude the show, this week, it's the man who spent nearly 3,000 consecutive days visiting Disneyland. He's entered the Guinness Book of World Records. PHIL That was no Mickey Mouse effort on his part. And that's this week's Five in the Eye! ++++

How should people/businesses be preparing for the future? How do we build the workforce we need for that future? How do you use creativity to solve problems? How do you collaborate?   Key quotes: “I like people, even though I'm actually quite shy. I don't go out in public. I stopped going to dinner parties because I couldn't stand the small talk. I don't really go anywhere.” “I don't know my phone number, on purpose.” “I'm really excited about Gen Z and all those generations afterwards, who are going to be making new consciousness for us, so that's who I want to talk to and who I want to try to dialogue with.” “The metaverse is a complex conglomeration of different IT systems that create another reality.” “We have to get rid of elitist education, we can't keep doing that. You know, Stormzy talking about sending kids to Oxford, that makes me vomit! What is he doing? Why doesn't he build some schools? I mean, Oxford isn't a great place for a black kid to go to, is he crazy? Well, he's a capitalist, it's a commodity thing.” “If we make education as long as it is, it should really be of use, not only academic, for intellect but also the community. Kids should be sent out to just stack shelves. I don't care what kind of degree you're getting, encounter ordinary people in the aisles at Tesco.” “We've got, in the Conservative Party, a cohort of people in their forties who've had no encounter with human beings. And it's a bad, bad thing.” “We're going to have to get off this planet, just to let people breathe. These are questions your children are going to grapple with.” "The last pay-check I ever had was when they found John Belushi dead at the Marmont hotel.” “We need each other in order to expand our brain, so I'm always up for working with other people.” “We're in an era where people are open about their trauma. We carry institutional trauma, we carry inter-generational trauma, I think we're trying to reclaim, not the trauma but our sense of survival and transcendence.” “We are a survivor species and we've survived because we co-operated with each-other. And the other way we survived is that the women moved out. We moved around quite a bit.”   Useful links: Bonnie Greer OBE FRSL (Wikipedia) Bonnie Greer writer profile in The Guardian Cuban Missile Crisis (Wikipedia) Premiership of Liz Truss (Wikipedia) Metaverse (Wikipedia) Bonnie Greer takes on Nick Griffin (BNP) on BBC Question Time (via YouTube) Jean-François Champollion, lexicographer (Wikipedia) Stormzy Scholarships (BBC News) John Belushi death (Wikipedia) British Museum — Bonnie Greer: The Era Of Reclamation The Little Boy and the Robot: A Tale of Our Time - Bonnie Greer TEDx talk (YouTube)   This episode was recorded in October 2022 Interviewer: Richard Freeman for always possible Editor: CJ Thorpe-Tracey for Lo Fi Arts

Our Story In a departure from our usual format, our guest Christian Bolden tells a personal story of visiting Ireland for the first time as a graduate student. He describes his experience as an African American in Dublin in 2016, a moment when three events captured attention: the US presidential election, the killing of Alton Sterling, and the death of Muhammad Ali.  Christian's story echoes that of Frederick Douglass, the Black abolitionist, who traveled to Ireland on an extensive speaking tour when he was a young man in 1845. Douglass found kinship with Daniel O'Connell, “The Liberator” who devoted his life to the repeal of the Penal Laws that inhibited the rights of Irish Catholics for centuries. Our Guest  Hailing from New Orleans, Louisiana, Christian Bolden now resides in Washington D.C. due to the catastrophic events of Hurricane Katrina. Christian is an inaugural board member of the African-American Irish Diaspora Network (AAIDN) with a mission dedicated to fostering relationships between African Americans and Ireland through shared heritage and culture. You'll hear a lot more about the organization during our conversation.  The AAIDN is just one aspect of Christian's community-building work. He has also been part of the Steel Sharpens Steel Summit a panel discussion committed to the enlightenment and enrichment of the Urban African-American Male Teen. He organized the "Re-New Orleans" event which commemorated the 5-Year Hurricane Katrina Anniversary and raised funding and awareness for the Gulf Coast Oil Spill Relief effort. A former Professional Staff Member in the U.S. House of Representatives, Bolden is now Principal at The Bolden Group which offers IT, Program/Project Management, and DEI services.  Our Conversation The way we find kinship with historical and mythical figures.  Frederick Douglass visited Ireland with a hope that there would be a sympathy for the abolitionist cause because there were echoes in the persecution of Catholics in Ireland. It's incorrect and deeply problematic to equate the experience of the Irish immigrants with African people who were brought to America as slaves, and yet there's something to learn when we see that there are similarities in aspects of the history.   The power of curiosity in cross-cultural conversations.  How Christian became a AAIDN, whose mission is to connect Ireland and African American communities. 38% of African Americans have Irish ancestry. One of their main projects includes the creation of the https://www.aaidnet.org/frederickdouglassway (Frederick Douglass Way) in Dublin, Cork, and Belfast with professor Christine Kinealy.  Diversity is about as more than demographic - it's about diversity in experience and in ideas 2020 discovery by archaeologists and geneticists:https://www.irishtimes.com/news/ireland/irish-news/early-irish-people-were-dark-skinned-with-blue-eyes-documentary-1.4541124 ( the Irish of 10,000 years ago had black skin and blue eyes). In Victorian England, the uproar following it included prominent names like Charles Dickens and Charles Darwin, who were on opposite sides of the debate. Bonnie wants to rectify the fact that the seven women who were killed in the aftermath have been largely forgotten, whilst their leaders - Paul Bogle and George William Gordon - are National Heroes of Jamaica. The end of one year and the beginning of another can be an obvious moment for people to set goals and reset priorities. The pandemic, from which we are yet to emerge, has put much into perspective and has doubtless prompted many to ask the question: where am I going with my life? What's it all about? While none of us can truly know the meaning of life, most of us are meaning-seeking creatures who have our own ideas about what gives life meaning – God, nature, the arts, human relationships, good food, scientific progress. Is meaning essential to a life well lived or do we put too much pressure on ourselves in trying to create it? For some, the stories we tell about ourselves are the most powerful way of addressing existential questions like the climate crisis. Yet meaning is subjective, and is often separated by national, cultural, religious and ideological borders. Can our disparate human stories be harnessed as a motivator for collective action on the climate? Or is it hubris to suggest human beings can find a solution, and the story we should be telling instead is one in which the cavalry isn't coming? Michael Buerk chairs this special end-of-year debate with guest panellists: Rowan Williams, Alice Roberts, Will Self and Bonnie Greer. With witnesses: Emily Esfahani-Smith, James Tartaglia, Martin Palmer and Charlotte Du Cann. Producer: Dan Tierney. #moralmaze

Highly anticipated guidance from the CDC says people who are fully vaccinated against Covid-19 can safely visit with other vaccinated people and small groups of unvaccinated people in some circumstances. The new guidelines mean vaccinated grandparents may finally feel comfortable visiting some family members. Dr. Sanjay Gupta joins AC360 to discuss the new guidance. Plus, the British royal family is facing a major crisis after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, alleged racism and neglect in an interview with Oprah Winfrey. Meghan revealed that she contemplated suicide after being so isolated and lonely while working as a royal and admitted she “just didn’t want to be alive anymore.” The Duchess of Sussex also said unnamed member of the family discussed their then-unborn first child and had “concerns and conversations about how dark his skin might be” and “what that would mean or look like.” Bonnie Greer is an author, playwright and a columnist for the New European. She tells Anderson Cooper she thinks it’s true the conversation happened.
