For This Natural Life, this week on on BBC Radio 4, Martha Kearney visited Sir James Dyson on his farm in Somerset to hear what the natural world means to him, and how that is being reflected in his approach to farming.Bird flu continues to hit poultry farms across the country. Last week we heard from Jerry Saunders, from Orchard Organic Farm in South Devon, about the emotional toll of having all 5000 of his birds culled after getting bird flu. We hear how the financial impact can be severe, too. Broadband speeds in rural areas are 26% slower than they are in urban areas - that's according to the Government, and there are still parts of the country that have no mobile phone access at all. We speak to Chris Bryant, the minister with responsibility for digital inclusion, about the Government's Digital Inclusion Action Plan.New rules for the pig supply chain are due to be introduced this spring to help even up what Defra describes as a 'power imbalance' between farmers and processors.Presented by Charlotte Smith and produced by Beatrice Fenton.

Donald Trump thinks Call Her Daddy is a dummy, Teebs takes over the Detroit Tigers, Hurricane Milton & Lieutenant Dan, Drew's flat tire, Maz's poor vision, Marilyn Manson assault investigation, Lisa Marie's new book, and Jim's List: Songs with "Detroit" in the title. Drew missed Game 3 of the ALDS due to ANOTHER flat tire. Thankfully Derrick and AAA saved the day. Josh Teebs has become the Detroit Tigers superfan and we love it.  Hurricane Milton destroyed Florida. Against every piece of advice Stuttering John didn't evacuate, but don't worry as he has plenty of booze. We check in with Tom Mazawey. After he disconnects himself and blames Marc, he guarantees a Lions victory over the Dallas Cowboys. At the Tiger's game yesterday Maz rudely snubbed KR Gibson and blamed it on his poor vision. Lieutenant Dan or Lieutenant Scam? Lieutenant Dan rode out Hurricane Milton in a boat. REO Speedwagon could not be reached for comment. He's been offered a streaming deal for some reason, but the doxxers are pointing out that he seems to be a grifter. Talk Tuah's audience is dwindling. Big surprise. Matty B should never have aged. Joy Mode brings you the Bonerline. Use promo code DREW. Call or text 209-66-Boner to communicate with the show. Diddy is now DEMANDING bail for the 3rd time. An old video has resurfaced of Diddy being really handsy with Justin Bieber. He's either patting him down to check for a wire, or he just likes touching Biebs' chest. Some people are saying both things are true. Piers Morgan interviews Diddy hater Jaguar Wright. Jay Z and Beyonce didn't like it so they called Piers immediately to get it edited. Marilyn Manson is ugly. He also isn't out of the weeds with his sexual assault allegations. Garth Brooks' accuser dropped a new text message from Garth. Is this really enough to convince us he's guilty? Call Her Daddy's Alex Cooper can't stop apologizing for her Kamala interview. One of her biggest fans, Donald Trump pulls out all the stops and calls her a dummy. Tua Tagovailoa is busted for his wife sharing a pro-Trump post. The new Lisa Marie Presley book sounds juicy. She lived with her dead son's body for two months. Michael Jackson was a virgin when they got married. Bill Maher gets Al Pacino's and Mick Jagger's sloppy seconds and thirds, respectfully. The Dark Side of Reality TV: Joe Millionaire. Something's going on and somebody's not telling me something. Robert Saleh BLOWN OUT by Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets. Michigan coach Chris Bryant was busted for getting into it with Washington fans. BUT...It will be handled internally and nothing will happen to Chris Bryant. Nothing to see here. New lawsuit against Kanye by a guy that was just fired by Kanye. Meghan Markle remains the worst. Jim's List: Songs with "Detroit" in the Title. Gene Simmons was a guest judge on Dancing with the Stars and he creeped viewers out with his comments. Visit Our Presenting Sponsor Hall Financial – Michigan's highest rated mortgage company. It is a story recounted by politician and historian Chris Bryant in his book James and John: A True Story of Prejudice and Murder. But how far has the law come since the 19th century? Was the image that Charles Dickens painted the truth? And how did feminist historian Naomi Wolf come to misunderstand the term "death recorded"? 'Part TWO' of this week's @EchoChamberFP https://www.instagram.com/echochamberfp/ like with so many, is thanks to the GREAT AJ Feuerman!!! We step into the wild frontier of the 1800's, for a new indie that highlights an iconic US figure, and marks the anniversary of the siege of the Alamo! THEN we are joined by an actor who's been forging his own path over a wild frontier. For 20+ years he's been a presence on the small and big screen, so it was a pleasure to get into his process, motivations, and aspirations. We talk about some hobbies, and things he wouldn't do again. It was a fantastic 60 minutes and I hope you enjoy!!! Watch the conversation: HERE! https://youtu.be/7RPgMQmEYKY 'The Ballad of Davy Crockett' is written & directed by Derek Estlin Purvis. We've seen the fastest turnover of prime ministers in our history, and more MPs have been suspended from the house or stood down from their seats than ever before in recent years. Politicians breaking the rules and expecting to get away with it is one of the biggest issues in our parliament today - which seems to be unable to escape the mire of sleaze, cronyism and dishonesty. This conversation was recorded at the winter Cambridge Literary festival in December when Anoosh Chakelian, Britain editor at the New Statesman, spoke to Chris Bryant, Labour MP for the Rhondda and Shadow Minister for Creative Industries and Digital about how politicians can reform parliament and win back public confidence.Tickets for the 2024 five day Spring festival are available from the 1st of February, please visit cambridgeliteraryfestival.com to find out more. He has worked with alternative protein companies and non-profits, including THIS, Formo, Ivy Farm Technologies, Aleph Farms, Wild Type, ProVeg International, Mercy For Animals, and the Good Food Institute. We discuss: 00:00 Clips! 00:53 Welcome 02:55 Chris' Intro - Social science research and analysis helping those "trying to move our food system away from animals and towards alternatives" - "Industrial animal farming... one of the biggest utility sinks"  06:46 What's Real? - Growing up in a "nominally religious" household... "vaguely Christian" - Turning to #atheism and thinking "what is the answer then... what does matter?" - An interest in philosophy at university "realised that philosophy was the thing I had been talking about" - Going #vegetarian - #effectivealtruism "an incredibly powerful tool... applying empirical evidence to altruistic intentions... trying to come up with the best ways of doing good... given limited resources" - "I had a good go at #hedonism in the interim though" - Naturalistic #epistemology and "being willing to be wrong about things" - The dangers of unquestioned assumptions - Crash testing ideas that go against the mainstream (e.g. are "processed" foods really unhealthy?) - Choosing good sources, doing research and running experiments - How people form and update beliefs: cognitive dissonance, motivated reasoning, working backwards to justify what we want to believe or do (e.g. consuming animal products)... - Even before that: ignorance (not knowing) and neglect / avoidance (not thinking about it) "Most people have probably never thought about that question [e.g. what % of animals are factory farmed]". "It's important to reach those people [~50%?] with just the reality and the facts" - Strongly and weakly-held beliefs - "For some people that's progress... at least they're having to do the mental gymnastics whereas before it had just never occurred to them" - "The fact that so few people have thought about it should be some kind of weird hope for vegetarians and vegans" - Push [away from animal products - ethics, environment, health] and pull [towards the alternatives - cheap, healthy, appealing, available] factors. "Really for long time we didn't have very good pull factors... appealing alternatives to offer people." - Motivated reasoning: "If I lose this argument I'll have to go vegan and only eat beans... but if you can have burgers and nuggets and everything else... I'm not very motivated to try and defend this view any more" - Social norms & the expectations of others "Not just what I think of veg*ism but what do others think of it" ...and much more. Ellen E Jones and Mark Kermode don their red raincoats to celebrate the 50th anniversary of haunting British thriller Don't Look Now. Originally released in 1973, Don't Look Now is a spine-tingling psychodrama in which Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie play a married couple grieving the death of their young daughter in Venice. Adapted from a story by Daphne du Maurier and directed by Nicolas Roeg, the film manages to be an eerie occult chiller, a heart breaking meditation upon love and grief, and a shaggy dog story with a grisly sting in its tail. Ellen speaks to Allan Scott, who co-wrote the screenplay for Don't Look Now with his partner Chris Bryant, about his memories of the film, including its notorious sex scene, and about his long working relationship with Nicolas Roeg. And Mark talks to two filmmakers for whom Don't Look Now has been a touchstone. Writer, actor and director Alice Lowe reveals how the film, and an encounter with Nicolas Roeg, influenced her black comedy thriller Prevenge. And the director of Another Round, Thomas Vinterberg discusses the impact Don't Look Now has had on his work, and the new resonance he finds in the film following the tragic death of his own daughter. Nish and Coco reflect on a scandal they think is a perfect metaphor for Tory-led Britain. Schools have had to close because they've been built using cheap and unstable concrete (called RAAC), while there are also concerns over hospitals and other public buildings. So as the country crumbles around us, who's to blame?Labour leader Keir Starmer has reshuffled his top team ahead of next year's expected general election. Coco welcomes brand new Shadow Minister for Creative Industries and Digital, Chris Bryant, into the studio. He gives his reaction to his appointment and admits he's a bit “discombobulated” after a whirlwind day. He reveals how reshuffles haven't always gone well for him, and impresses Coco with his impression of Tony Blair. Chris Bryant shares about his grandaddy “Mitch,” and the pivotal moments that helped him rebuild his life at 40. Chris's story is a powerful reminder of what happens when we make ourselves available to the lives of others, particularly our children and our grandchildren. Often times the deposits we make as fathers into the lives of our family aren't fully realized until our children are much older, but this shouldn't detract us from the value of our consistent presence each day. Our duty, our ongoing responsibility is to show up each and every day. Enjoy this episode and a much needed reminder, the seemingly insignificant moments we share with our kids, compounded over years, will shape the rest of their lives.

“Some people have an intuition that [alternative proteins] might be somehow bad for the environment because it's unnatural and that might upset the balance of nature. But in reality, animal products are one of the worst contributors to climate change and many other environmental metrics that you can think of. So reducing the consumption of animal products is one of the major ways that we can reduce our own environmental footprint currently.” —Chris Bryant   Protein is the building block of life, and it's crucial that we get enough of it in our diet every day. But we're hard-wired to crave meat, plus, we know how challenging it can be to find healthy foods that match up to the rich flavor profiles of meat. That's why there's so much excitement around plant-based proteins: they're taking over the market! This transition is not only beneficial for our health but it also helps us move toward greener solutions for our health while reducing our carbon footprint. Making this shift can bring about tangible benefits such as improved air quality, reduced waste and emissions, and healthier communities. Moving away from traditional methods of production is essential in order to achieve these goals. Bryant Research UK is one of the leading experts in advancing protein transition. Their team of experts in social science, market research, and policy analysis helps mainstream meat reduction and alternative proteins. Besides conducting independent research, they also collaborate with alternative protein companies and animal protection non-profits to help speed up this initiative.   In this episode, Bryant Research UK Director, Chris Bryant offers empirical evidence on how protein transition can help create a more sustainable future for everyone. Justine and Chris also talk about what makes protein transition so urgent, how culture and background shape people's choices, what labels really say about animal welfare, how alternative proteins have progressed over the years, how misinformation affected how alternative proteins are perceived, and how businesses can make a successful transition in this trend. Meet Chris:  Chris Bryant is the Director of Bryant Research UK. He is an expert in alternative proteins and has published dozens of papers on the social dimensions of the protein transition.
