Every day, law enforcement officers put themselves in harm's way to ensure public safety and are often severely injured in that process. The repercussions of on-duty injuries can extend far beyond the physical. The aftermath often brings a cascade of challenges that affect not only the injured officers but also their families and colleagues. In this episode of the "Policing Matters" podcast host Jim Dudley speaks with Dr. Patricia Kay Reyna about her family's ordeal following a devastating on-duty accident that left her husband, Humberto Reyna, a North Carolina State Highway Patrol Master Trooper, with a traumatic brain injury. Currently working with the Center on Brain Injury Research and Training at the University of Oregon, Dr. Reyna discusses her transformative journey from a finance professional to a traumatic brain injury expert and advocate. Her story sheds light on the physical, emotional and bureaucratic struggles that ensue following such injuries in the line of duty. In this episode, Laurent sits down with Tristan Wimmer and Ben Pitassi of 22 Jumps.  22 Jumps is a public charity that combines BASE jumping and fundraising to support the development of durable solutions for traumatic brain injuries.    The project was initiated by Tristan Wimmer after his brother Kiernan's tragic death. Kiernan, who had suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI) sustained in Iraq for almost a decade, tragically took his own life in 2015. Tristan and his family watched as Kiernan's injury affected his mental and physical well-being, leading to emotional and violent behavior. Unfortunately, Kiernan's story is not unique, with an estimated 22 veterans taking their own lives each day, according to a 2012 report by the Department of Veterans Affairs. In response to this, Tristan and his team are working to raise awareness and funds for organizations researching and treating TBIs by completing 22 BASE jumps in one day, the same number of veterans who take their own lives each day. 22 Jumps serves as a tribute to honor those veterans and bring attention to the struggles they face.   Our second guest is a member of the board of directors for 22 Jumps and is currently serving with the Navy Parachute Team while on active duty. He has deployed 7 times to various parts of the world during his career.  Ben is passionate about helping his fellow service members and founded The Uplift Union in 2019, a nonprofit centered around adaptive paragliding.   Note from Tristan: "22 Jumps would not be possible without the groundswell of love, support, and time that people give to make it a reality. There are too many to name, but Adam Ghannoum, COO of 22 Jumps, has been a shoulder since the beginning of this journey and has been invaluable to its success." Marion Spears Karr has over 30 years of experience in executive recruiting and talent acquisition in healthcare. He has led successful recruitment teams specializing in nursing leadership, c-level, VP, senior director, and physician executive searches. But don't let that fool you; Marion is not your typical recruitment talent acquisition leader. As with everything he has done well in life, Marion digs deeper, goes the extra mile, and so much more. Marion was raised in a blue-collar family with a strong faith in the hills of Piedmont, North Carolina, below the Appalachian mountains where his family originated. His parents worked in the local Cannon textile mill. He credits his grandmother as an influence in his life, a skilled storyteller who lived with them, for her ability to capture a moment. At an early age, Marion fell in love with skateboarding, and European bike racing, neither of which were typical activities of his peers. By high school, he went to Europe as an exchange student to train and compete as a bike racer. To support his activities, Marion worked at the textile mill and other jobs and had sponsorships that provided his equipment. He also planned to attend college as his parents required him to achieve educational goals to continue bike racing. A week after his high school graduation Marion was hit by a car while on a training ride. He suffered a traumatic brain injury. Marion went through trauma care and rehab, and did attend college though he had to approach learning in new ways. Needless to say, his bike racing career was over. Marion married while in college and upon graduation returned home to enter a management training program at the textile mill. He did well there but he wanted to explore other options. An opportunity to join a management recruitment firm came through a former colleague from the textile mill and Marion felt it was a risk worth taking. He has not looked back. Today, Marion focuses his work on helping healthcare organizations build leadership teams that are aligned and mission-centered. He also does motivational speaking, leadership coaching for individuals, and team development for a vast array of audiences. In this week's Work From The Inside Out podcast, learn more about Marion's journey: Marion is involved with several organizations that support Brain Injury Research and recovery programs. He is the developer of the Accomplishment Culture Coaching model for team and individual leadership growth, founded on the principles of positive psychology. If an athlete on the high school varsity football, lacrosse, or soccer team happens to be more than typically distracted, taking too long, has become inconsistent with routines or happens to frequently doze off in history class, the teacher's first assumption might be to question the student's motivation and him hitting his head three weeks ago might be long forgotten. But the data shows that 12% of those children with a mild brain injury continue to have persistent symptoms beyond 1 year and it is vital that all those involved educating such children be informed about the nuances of this hidden epidemic. On this episode, Dr. Ann Glang, a special education researcher who for over 25 years has designed and studied interventions to support children and adolescents with TBI, educators, and families, will share how a brain injury as a condition differs from other disabilities and how best to support the needs of these students in the classroom and beyond. Considering the prevalence of traumatic brain injuries in children is on the rise, it is no surprise that they all end up in our schools and many in regular classrooms. By learning about the educational impact of such injuries to the brain, teachers and parents will gain the power and agency to make a difference in the life of every child.About Ann Glang, Ph.D.Dr. Ann Glang is a special education researcher who for over 25 years has designed and studied interventions to support children and adolescents with TBI, educators, and families.
