Walter was born and raised in Kearny, New Jersey, a suburb of New York City with a population of about 60,000. He liked everything about the town and Kearny High School. The town was ethnically diverse, as was Kearny High School. He did reasonably well academically and played basketball and baseball all four years. One day a nurse came up to him and told him about a mentoring program offered by the Brain Injury Alliance of New Jersey. After a training session, he became Sandy's mentor along with five others. After 20 years he is still helping Sandy, who is now 59. What does a mentor do? Mentors try to get the survivor as many benefits possible — housing, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, etc. Walter introduces activities like handicapped horseback riding, joining a support group, finding work opportunities, etc. He always helps them set goals that include gaining as much independence as possible. He takes each of the survivors he mentors out to lunch at least once a week. When he became a mentor, he decided to learn as much as he could about brain injury. He joined a support group, read books, and subscribed to magazines. He has leaned much in the last 20 years but continue to learn. He wrote and published two books (Brain Injury: Living a Productive Life After a Stroke or Traumatic Brain Injury & Stroke: Promising Research that Could Change Your Life) and currently publishes a free online magazine called Stroke and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Life Magazine. (You can subscribe by emailing him at satbilmagazine@gmail.com.) Over the years he has mentored many survivors. Some have died, some have moved, and some have moved on and continued their journeys on their own. Every one of them has learned to make the most of their lives with a just a little help from him. He is currently mentoring five survivors, and after 20 years he still enjoy his role as a mentor.   Brain Injury Peer Visitor Association Webiste - here #5 Thoughts Friday: Harris, Human, and Harriet   For more information you can visit www.biamd.org or call the free helpline at 1-800-221-6443.   Disclaimer: This podcast is provided for informational purposes only and does not constitute endorsement of treatments, individuals, or programs which appear herein. Welcome to Fight in Progress!   Sean Stoddard was a 13-year veteran with the Mesa Police Department when he was critically injured in a car crash on the U.S. 60 on August 11, 2020. Sean noticed a ladder blocking a lane. He stopped his patrol car, activated his emergency lights, but before he could get out, a woman driving an SUV collided with his patrol car from behind.   Sean was critically injured and sustained a traumatic brain injury.  Sean says since part of his brain was deleted, he now uses the term Sean 1.0, and Sean 2.0, to explain his before and after.   Although his brain injury changed him, it hasn't changed his priority to help people. He started his own nonprofit called Archangels, which helps veterans and first responders dealing with PTSD or other challenges.   Sean also has worked with Vitanya which we recently did a podcast with and the Brain Injury Alliance of Arizona.   Sean did medically retire from Mesa PD, but still volunteers with their cadet program. EVOLVE 89 is different than our normal episodes as we had Steve joined in a round table discussion about brain injury, brain health and how it plays into you overall health. Why we are talking about a topic like this on the EVOLVE podcast? Steve says “I would say there are a few reasons. First, as we discuss what a brain injury is many of you may recall a time where you experienced something that fits the definition. This episode can shed light on this topic and expand your understanding Second, there are more than 5.3 million individuals in the United States who are living with a permanent brain injury-related disability. That's one in every 60 people. Third, In addition to the 5.3 million with a TBI there are at least 2.8 million Americans sustain traumatic brain injuries in the US every year…so if YOU don't have a brain injury you may know someone who does. And finally, the reason we are doing this episode is because I fundamentally believe that if there is a topic that I don't know about I want to learn more. Education and awareness open up my mind toward personal growth and evolution and I have a passion for living, learning and sharing with you” Join Steve as he interviews Dr Alina Fong, Co-Founder, Clinical Neuropsychologist and Clinical Director of CognitiveFX, and former guests Ashley Iverson and Jennifer Salerno about the prevalence of traumatic brain injuries and how awareness can lead to empathy, understanding and proper care and healing.  Both Ashley and Dr Fong sit on the board of The Brain Injury Alliance of Utah and work with the organization to provide resources and support to all Utah brain injury survivors.  Jen Salerno bravely joins the group to share her powerful perspective on being a brain injury survivor and how her traumatic brain injury has evolved over the years.  Steve says “this is probably the most powerful and eye-opening recordings we have ever done. I hope our listeners get as much out of this powerful conversation as I did and now have knowledge and information that can empower them to get help and support for themselves or their loved ones who have suffered from a TBI.”  Links: Brain Injury Alliance of Utah: IG: https://www.instagram.com/braininjuryallianceofutah/  Web: https://www.braininjuryutah.org  Dr Alina Fong: Web: https://www.cognitivefxusa.com  Web: https://www.cognitivefxusa.com/en-us/dr-alina-k-fong-phd  Ashley Iverson: IG: https://www.instagram.com/Ashley.iverson  Jen Salerno: Web: http://www.resetandrenewyoga.com  IG: https://www.instagram.com/jennydoesyoga/?hl=en  Apply for coaching at https://www.evolve-cast.com/get-started   Get your EVOLVE merch today at https://evolve-cast.myshopify.com   Follow Us! Participating schools receive a cash stipend and technical support to assist with their campaigns, and advisors receive professional development hours. New for this year: Due to COVID and the uncertainty of school schedules, this year's program will challenge teams of students to create social media campaigns and virtual presentations or gatherings that can be shared within their schools and communities and across social media platforms. “My story is a miraculous recovery because I beat every expectation for what was going to happen. We believe we can share some of these guides to help others have a miraculous recovery from what they're going through. Because, as I say, a lot of my luck was created. You can create your own luck if you take the steps to build it, and climb an alternative peak.”   Jamie Crane-Mauzy—better known as Jamie MoCrazy, a name she'll explain early in this week's show—has lived most of her life on the slopes. She started skiing at age 1, and by 18, had gone pro as a slopestyle and halfpipe skier.    Everything changed in 2015, when she crashed at the World Tour Finals and sustained a traumatic brain injury. Her condition was so severe the medical team had even written her fatality report.   She survived—and after a 10-day coma, embarked on an extensive, years-long recovery process. Of course, re-learning to walk, talk, and interact socially were difficult. But one of the biggest emotional struggles, Jamie says, came when she realized she would no longer be competing as a pro athlete.    Coming to terms with that major life shift involved the support of a loving family, professional mental-health treatment, and finding a greater purpose—educating and motivating others, including survivors of traumatic brain injury and their caregivers, through the MoCrazy Strong organization. It's a different kind of mountain to climb, Jamie says, but one that's ultimately incredibly rewarding and fulfilling.   **Please note that this episode contains descriptions of trauma that some people may find unsettling. According to the CDC, a concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury—or TBI—caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or by a hit to the body that causes the head and brain to move rapidly back and forth. This sudden movement can cause the brain to bounce around or twist in the skull, creating chemical changes in the brain and sometimes stretching and damaging brain cells. She shares her knowledge about what to look for immediately and in the days afterward, and what to do to heal as fast and as well as possible. Fred Minnick is a national bestselling author & nationally recognized bourbon & spirits connoisseur, as well a U.S. Army veteran. While growing up in Oklahoma, the Oklahoma County News published his 1st story at the age of 15. Fred states he will never forget the feeling of seeing his name in print-he was hooked. In 1996, Minnick, joined the National Guard to help pay for college. After Fred graduated in 2001 from Oklahoma State University with a B.S. degree in Agricultural Comm./Journalism, he joined the Army as an infantryman, but once he learned the Army had jobs for Army journalists-he reclassified. By the time he graduated & started his career with a marketing firm in Wisconsin, he found himself serving in a mobile public affairs detachment, the week before 9/11, becoming an Army staff sergeant & ultimately a public affairs photojournalist who in 2003 served a 1-year tour of duty deployment to Mosul, Iraq with the 139 Mobile Public Affairs Detachment ending in 2004. During this time, Minnick suffered from various physical wounds & PTSD during the time-frame of roughly 2004-2009, sparing you the details, the “day-to-day” became a real challenge for him after Iraq, & while working for Networld Alliance as a restaurant trade editor, until fall 2006, Fred took the giant leap to go out on my own, & 1 of the 1st things he did as a new freelancer was write a list of categories he could write about. BOURBON was on that list.  From a technique he learned called Mindfulness on how to deal with his PTSD, it, in turn, became a GREAT technique for learning how to taste bourbon. Which is how he has become the industry’s leading spirits taster, traveling all over the world there was no one specializing in bourbon & spirit tasting at that time, YET publications wanted the information. There was a broad audience & the market could handle it. Before he knew it, a new career was born! His 1st bourbon story was published shortly thereafter, & never looked back as they say! In 2009 he penned his 1st book about his tour of Duty in Iraq called Camera Boy: An Army Journalist’s War in Iraq. The success of that book led Fred to author 6 different books & become a Wall Street Journal-bestselling author from 2009 until this interview with such titles as: 2016’s Bourbon-The Rise & Fall & Rebirth of an American Whiskey or 2015’s Bourbon Curious: A Simple Guide for the Savvy Drinker, or 2013’s Whiskey Women: The Untold Story of How Women Saved Bourbon, Scotch & Irish Whiskey or total diversionary topics away from distilled spirits such as 2010’s Certified Angus Beef History Book. Today he serves as a judge on the San Francisco World Spirits Competition & the World Whiskies Awards. He’s also judged multiple cocktail contests, including the national competitions for Old Forester, Four Roses & Citadelle Gin. Is the official “Bourbon Authority” for the KY. Derby Museum, has been the Chairman of the Brain Injury Alliance of KY.’s Brain Ball. Not to mention a spirits writer for multiple national & international periodicals such as USA Today/Scientific American/Parade Magazine/Caviar Affair /Whisky Advocate/Whisky Magazine/Tasting Panel/Wine Spectator/Sommelier Journal/Wine Enthusiast/Bourbon Review-a Hunting Magazine named Covey Rise & yes even the Costco Connection! As you have heard it wasn’t an easy road to where he sits atop the bourbon world, waiting on a new batch to write about and taste. But looking back at Iraq as a father, husband, successful author, and a sought-after spirits expert–he said he is in a good place now. Minnick resides with his lovely wife Jaclyn and in Louisville, Ky.
