This episode of Beyond the Broom Cupboard, we speak to Maddie Moate. BBC's Do you know:https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episodes/b09yn3ly/maddies-do-you-knowMaddie's Youtube Channelhttps://www.youtube.com/@maddiemoateA very curious Christmas west end showhttps://nimaxtheatres.com/shows/maddies-curious-christmas-live-on-stage/ About Maddie Moate:Maddie Moate is a presenter known for her work on CBeebies, YouTube and in live theatre. She started her presenting career online with a comedy sketch series about smartphones and apps, sponsored by Nokia. This led to her presenting for various tech brands and becoming a YouTube tech presenter and journalist.Maddie was then hired by BBC Earth for their YouTube channel as a scientist familiar with the YouTube format.CBeebies then approached her to host a new tech science engineering show as they wanted a real person, not an actor, to host.Maddie's Approach to Science Communication:Maddie believes in finding the extraordinary in the ordinary and making science accessible to everyone. She focuses on simplifying complex scientific concepts using relatable examples and language that children can understand. For example, she explains weight in terms of small elephants and uses familiar objects like forks and fences to spark children's interest.Maddie prioritises family viewing and avoids patronising language, ensuring her content is engaging for both children and adults."Do You Know?" Show:The show features two segments: "How is it made?" and "How does it work?".Finding factories in the UK for the "How is it made?" segment became increasingly difficult as the series progressed. The show's topics were chosen through crowd research, with school children providing ideas, as well as Maddie's own curation of ideas and identifying products made in the UK.The random nature of the episode topics was partly due to the availability of factory locations.Maddie's YouTube Content:Maddie's YouTube content often focuses on finding extraordinary stories within ordinary objects and themes, like paper made from elephant poo and bread baked in geothermal hot springs. She sees these as opportunities to teach children about topics like sustainability and geothermal energy in engaging ways."A Very Curious Christmas" Book and Stage Show:The book explores the science behind Christmas traditions and cultures, like why we have Christmas stockings and how Christmas crackers work. The book was inspired by Maddie's difficulty finding resources that collated fun Christmas-themed science questions. The stage show adaptation is set in Santa's workshop, where Maddie works alongside two elves to fix the chaotic workshop using science. The show incorporates audience interaction, jokes, music and visual elements to keep audiences of all ages engaged.Navigating YouTube with Children:Maddie acknowledges the challenges of YouTube's algorithm-driven content, which can lead to children repeatedly seeing similar content. She recommends using the YouTube Kids app and curating a list of trusted channels to provide a safer and more enriching experience.Maddie encourages parents to watch YouTube content with their children to discover family-friendly creators and ensure a shared experience Hosted on Acast. Hi! It's us again. The Terrance Malick of podcasters. We wanted to evoke the massive gap between the original movie and it's sequel, so it was clearly on purpose. It's modern art. This is another car episode and this time we went to see Beetleguise Beetleguise, the cleverly named second instalment of the budding franchise, directed once more by the great Tim Burton. Did we like it? Listen to find out, you lazy sod. Si managed to repurpose Greensleeves for the less reputable crowd, but it's so old that the original composer isn't around to sue him. Question for the masses - have you ever heard it on an ice cream van? Answers on a postcard to "The Broom Cupboard" please. Also, if you like Your Highness, please let us know. We feel so alone. In this episode, the topic is children's media. This conversation had nothing to do with public health pandemics, and was recorded in January 2020 - about a month before the news really set-in that an incurable and highly infectious virus was moving across Asia and deep into Europe and beyond. But the reason that we've included it, in this series is because the discussions on the value of creativity, information and education are incredibly pertinent. With screen-time going through the roof and homeschooling meaning different things to different people, children's television and radio has had a huge part to play this year, especially on the BBC - but is it good enough? Who writes it? And can entertainment ever really be where learning happens? Our very special guest is Chris Jarvis. Chris' career in the public eye spans nearly 30 years, making him one of the most recognisable figures in children's arts and media. From the infamous ‘Broom Cupboard' in the early 1990s and magazine programmes such as The Friday Zone and Fully Booked, Chris has become best known for his work for pre-school children on CBeebies. Chris has co-presented the programme Show Me, Show Me for over 10 years, alongside extensive work on children's pantomime and translating subjects such as space science and orchestral music into special broadcasts for young children. We talk about the way TV and radio for children is created, and whether this has changed through Chris' career - and where he thinks it might go next. --- Useful links: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chris_Jarvis_(presenter) https://www.littleradio.co.uk/ https://www.bbc.co.uk/cbeebies/shows/show-me-show-me https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RMdl2pFnTIA https://www.childrensarts.org.uk/ —-- For more information on how you can get involved with The Possibility Club – an inclusive community of professionals working out what's next, have a look here. Episode 10 - AI BJs. Richard is worried about the future of Soleros when he should be worrying about the depths his career has sunk too. Luckily his little pals turn up to help him through this difficult time. There's more birthdays with Donkey, what's the buzz with Brian Wasp and Marmite Lid observational comedy, but Ally is on hand to talk about lockdown 2, sex robots, Lily Allen's wedding and his prejudice against foreign parrots. Plus 35 years of embarrassing grown adults talking to socks in the Broom Cupboard. And a slightly new direction for Whory Horse. And let's see how Ally gets on when he is forced to go solo. Performance Director Gary Hall charts the rise of GB Taekwondo from broom cupboards, corridors and supermarket aisles to six Olympic medals from the last three games, including back-to-back Golds for Jade Jones. Having become a global force in the Korean martial art, Britain's planning to take at least three genuine Gold medal hopes to Tokyo. It's a project with demonstrable results and Gary's strategy has always been a bold one. What happens when he asks UK Sport - straight up - for £12 million? Their reply will amaze you. He also tells the inside story of Sarah Stevenson’s controversial bronze medal match in Beijing (before the days of VAR...) and hypes the arrival of taekwondo at the Paralympics. Andy Stevenson is alongside host Jonathan Overend for Episode Six, in association with Aldi UK, official supermarket partner of Team GB. They chat about media diversity and misleading split screens. All the usual. Plus unlikely references to dairy farmers and pigeon racing. Also some mid-level swearing as Gary gets passionate.
Kelly's story continues as she discovers a very 'woo woo' way to shed the trauma of her abusive ex. Melvin Jerome Blanc, the man of a thousands voices- Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Barney Rubble and Bugs. So many Looney Tunes favourites. Three from Bob Crosby, including a Shakespearian sonnet. Les Compagnions De La Chanson and The Three Bells. Lovely Gallic harmony. A 'B' side, In the Light of the Silvery Moon but what is the big hit on the other side? Nat King Cole and The Four Knights, more Winifred Atwell, Georgia Gibbs, Jean Goldkette and Gary Miller, the singing voice of Troy Tempest in Stingray. A pioneering Rock and Roll star, who last year was touring Britain at the age of 82, Charlie Gracie. Early country and Western Swing from The Hill Billies and Hoosiers Hot Shots. Two songs in Scots. The pre 1st World War, 'We'll hae just Anither.' Its from Hector Gordon, he's a bit of a mystery. More up to date and no mystery Joe Gordon and The Folk Four, A regular in The White Heather Club on TV in the 60s. In amongst all this the magnificent Harry Parry(pictured) and his Radio Rhyhm Sextet, vocals by Doreen Villiers. What a title ' Bounch me, brother, with a solid four.'
The first Forgotten Songs from the Broom Cupboard to be recorded as a podcast. Its the same format as ever, an eclectic mix of lesser known, forgotten and neglected artists and songs. Some 'B' sides too. All on good old 78rpm. Its a Scottish start - the Trinidad born pianist Winifred Atwell launches us with Highland Boogie. Listen out for the mad bagpipes. A proper pipe band with The Bowhill Colliery Pipe Band next(pictured). They won the Pipe Band World Championship in 1947. Kay Starr, Kitty Kallen, Lonnie Donegan, Bill Haley - with more Boogie. Richard Tauber on a Parlophone Odeon Label is our oldest record - 1942. Otherwise its 1950s all the way. Teresa Brewer was one of the most prolific singers of the 1950s, covering all genres she is reckoned to have recorded over 600 tracks in the decade. Here she sings Wang, Wang Blues. Is it just me or is it rather naughty? Then we have a new discovery for me: Arthur Godfrey, U.S radio and TV broadcaster and entertainer. A troubled man by all accounts. It's an entertaining record though. There's more of course.

Even before she became Prime Minister, Theresa May pledged a new government department that would oversee Britain's departure from the European. Not just that, but the department would be run by a leading Brexiteer. How much influence did David Davis - the first Brexit secretary - have? Who was really leading negotiations? And was it all simply a political manoeuvre on the Prime Minister's part? Mark Mardell delves into the corridors of Whitehall and the new Department for Exiting the European Union, to find out what was really going on behind the doors of No 10 and No 9 Downing Street. The latest episode of the podcast which asks: what’s the difference between a Cartoon Time and a Cartoon Club? This episode, Pop-Crazed Youngsters, sees the world’s No.1 authority on old episodes of a long-gone pop show casting its eyes and ears toward the summer of ’89 - but if you're expecting to see some Acid House tomfoolery or a full-on Madchester takeover, you're going to be massively disappointed: the only Acieeed references are on Sinitta's ears, and the only Manc in attendance is, er, Simon Parkin, who's been let out of the Broom Cupboard for his TOTP debut. And he looks like he's shitting himself throughout. Still, this episode is a definite sign that things are getting better, as long as you avoid looking at the appalling shirts that men chose to wear in that era: Brit-Hop pitches up in the shape of the Rebel MC. REM finally escape from Student Discoland into our hearts and charts. Fuzzbox get all saucy with a massive pin . And Stock Aitken and Waterman finally admit defeat with the worst No.1 of the year that didn't involve a grown man in a rabbit costume. Al Needham is joined by Sarah Bee and Neil Kulkarni for a ram of the critical arm up the cow's arse of '89, veering off to discuss being coated down by middle-aged Crusties, Mams who go into town wearing your favourite band t-shirts, suitable replacements for Africa pendants if you happen to be white and don't want to get battered, being stared at by Cyndi Lauper, and the disgusting lack of train etiquette displayed by second division pop stars. And - of course - all the swearing you could possibly need. Download | Video Playlist | Subscribe Follow us on Facebook here. Link up with us on Twitter here. Subscribe to us on iTunes here.
