Steve Hewlett is a ventriloquist from Basingstoke, Hampshire, England. He was a finalist on the seventh series of Britain's Got Talent. Hewlett has previously headlined Cromer Pier.He auditioned with a puppet called 'Arthur Lager', depicted as an old man with grey hair. Hewlett's audition was aired in a montage on 18 May 2013. He made it through, and subsequently through to the semi-finals. He appeared again in the semi-final on 1 June with Arthur Lager, and a puppet designed to resemble Simon Cowell, one of the judges. The routine involved Arthur flirting with Amanda Holden. He finished in the top three, and with eventual winners Attraction already through to the final, it was down to the judges to choose the second place in the final between Hewlett and Jordan O'Keefe. It was a split decision, so it was referred back to the public vote, revealing that with 15.1% of the vote, O'Keefe was through to the final, compared to Hewlett's 12%. This left six singing acts in the final, which generated complaints; Holden defended this, and the number of singers on the show, saying "We left it to the public, they wanted Jordan so that was the right decision. You can't argue with the public's decision."However, earlier in the week, it was revealed that the judges would choose a wildcard act out of the third-placed finishers to compete in the final. Hewlett was seen as the popular choice. It was revealed on the night that Hewlett was indeed the wildcard. He performed again in the final with Arthur Lager (now wearing a Onesie) and the puppet of Simon Cowell (wearing a swimsuit and life jacket), as well as a puppet of Sinitta, along with a musical number in the shape of "We Go Together" from Grease at the end, involving the Simon and Sinitta puppets. Despite rave reviews from the judges, Hewlett finished fourth, just narrowly missing out on the top three with 14.7% of the vote, compared to Richard & Adam's 15.4%.It was revealed the day after the final that Hewlett had been signed to the entertainment agency ROAR Global. In 2014, Hewlett led a team of challengers on the TV quiz show Eggheads. He took the puppet Arthur Lager with him. It's the chart stat that's still talked about among Stock Aitken Waterman fans — three firm fan favourites all peaked in the 20s on the UK chart in the same week. Was the SAW sound reaching saturation point or were there other reasons why all three artists, who'd reached the top 10 with their previous singles, faltered? And with songs that are widely regarded as some of SAW's best. In the case of Bananarama, "Love, Truth And Honesty" was a brand new track from their first best of, the mega-selling and widely promoted The Greatest Hits Collection, and their first completely new song recorded with Jacquie O'Sullivan. But was its more sophisticated sound too big a move away from the cheery pop of the Wow! singles? For Sinitta, "I Don't Believe In Miracles" was also a shift in direction. Gone was the playfulness of "Toy Boy" or "G.T.O." and in its place was a mature, tears on the dance floor concept. We hear from Sinitta about the track and why she didn't want to record it, and discuss the fact that it was her final SAW single. Meanwhile, Italian bombshell Sabrina came to work with SAW on "All Of Me", which was a natural successor to international breakthrough smash "Boys (Summertime Love)". But not even targetting the single especially for the UK market with a different video from the European release helped turn it into another top 10 smash.

Three songs, three more UK top 10 hits as Stock Aitken Waterman's chart domination ramped up. The first of those songs was a rather emotional one — the final single released by Mel & Kim, "That's The Way It Is". Kim Appleby joins us to talk about how she and Mel recorded the track during a respite in her sister's treatment for cancer and how one of their own compositions, "You Changed My Life", was included on the B-side. Kim also discusses her return to work with Stock and Aitken in 1994 during her solo career and gives her thoughts on Mel & Kim's legacy. We then take a look at Rick Astley's next hit, "Together Forever", which was blocked from the number 1 spot in the UK by another SAW record but made it all the way to the top in the US. But all that success was getting to Rick — and we explore the downside to his sudden fame. Meanwhile, Sinitta lifted another song from her debut album — one that was remixed for single release. We hear from the pop star about "Cross My Broken Heart" and the inspiration behind her image.

Our journey reaches the end of 1987 with Stock Aitken Waterman's bid for the UK Christmas number 1 slot: a double A-side release from Rick Astley that combined his cover of "When I Fall In Love" with a brand new song, "My Arms Keep Missing You". We explain the factors that prevented the single from taking out top honours that year. Plus, it was the end of an era for Bananarama as the original line-up's final single together, "I Can't Help It", was released. Phil Harding and Karen Hewitt share their memories of Siobhan Fahey's time in the group. Sinitta released her latest pop tune, "G.T.O", but she explains why she wasn't that thrilled about the song's subject matter. It was a match made in pop music heaven: Sinitta and Stock Aitken Waterman. But although the idea of the "So Macho" star recording at the Hit Factory seems like a no-brainer now, it didn't happen overnight. And as Sinitta reveals in our exclusive interview, SAW were unsure about working with her — and not just because her record label boss Simon Cowell had made a habit of hanging around at PWL uninvited. In the end, "Toy Boy" was created, and Sinitta talks about how SAW used her life as inspiration for the lyrics and what prompted her to come up with the rap that kicks off the single. As well as talking about "Toy Boy", Sinitta discusses her early music releases, including "Cruising" and "Feels Like The First Time"; the epic road to the top 5 for her breakthrough smash, "So Macho"; shooting her first music video; and the infamous fight between Simon and producer Ian Levine. This week, with the launch of the refreshed #YouCanAdopt campaign, which hopes to encourage more people to consider adopting groups of brothers and sisters, pop star and adoptive mother Sinitta sits down with Hafsa and James to talk about their experience of adopting brothers. Latest figures show there are currently 2,030 children waiting to be adopted in England and, of those, 44% are in family groups of two or more. With family groups of children taking an average of 17 months to be adopted, brothers and sisters typically take 36% longer to be adopted than individual children. This episode explores the huge benefits and potential challenges of adopting family groups, and dives deep into the journey that Sinitta, Hafsa and James went through when they adopted their children. They talk through the adoption process, how they came to the decision to adopt brothers and sisters together, and how they are adapting to their new family life. Hafsa and James began their adoption journey as foster carers, and after struggles with IVF, last year made the leap to adoption. A mixed heritage couple, Hafsa is Pakistani and James is African Caribbean, they sought children who as closely as possible matched their ethnicities, and were able to adopt two little boys to grow their family. Steve Hewlett is a comedian and ventriloquist. A ventriloquist since the age of 12, his dummies include Arthur Lager; Simon Cowell and Sinitta and a lamb called Lamb Shank. In 2006 he became the new voice of Archie Andrews - at one time the nation's favourite dummy whose radio programme, Educating Archie, attracted 15m listeners in the 1950s. Steve is touring the UK with his show Thinking Inside The Box. Jamie Andrew is a mountaineer who lost his hands and feet to frostbite after being stranded in a blizzard in the Alps 15 years ago. His close friend and climbing partner died on the mountain. With the help of physiotherapy and prosthetics Jamie learned how to walk again and returned to mountaineering. The documentary The Limbless Mountaineer follows Jamie's progress as he attempts to climb the Matterhorn. The Limbless Mountaineer is broadcast on Channel 5. Ayo Ogunmakin is a singer and songwriter. Born in Cologne to a Nigerian father and Romanian Gypsy mother, her childhood was spent in foster homes after her parents divorced and her mother became a heroin addict. Her father, a part time DJ, introduced Ayo to music from an early age. Her new album Ticket To The World is released on Wrasse Records. Philip Walling is a former sheep farmer who worked as barrister for over 30 years. In his new book, Counting Sheep, he pays homage to his farming roots. The book focuses on the role of sheep in the history of the British countryside and Philip writes about some of the 60 native breeds that thrive in the UK, exploring their past and future.
