This week on The Sports Agents...From sneaking a disguised Novak Djokovic into a team talk, to lessons from Ben Stokes and the LIV/PGA divide, we chatted to European Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald for an exclusive interview (02:15). One day Jim Ratcliffe said Manchester United were on track to be 'bust by Christmas', and the next they announced plans for a £2bn stadium... so we asked Professor of Football Finance at the University of Liverpool, Kieran Maguire, how that makes sense (08:45). Michael Jordan, Usain Bolt, Sarah Storey... lots of famous sportspeople have tried switching sports. We got into what that's like with double Olympic champion Jade Jones, who's swapping taekwondo for boxing. We also chatted to Usain Bolt's football coach, Mike Mulvey (16:30). And comedian Adam Hills chatted to us about his new role as President of the Rugby Football league, which seems to involve a big gold chain, hearing stories from his Ukrainian counterpart and spending his spare time at the Para-Standing Tennis World Championships (21:30). For a sport that only started at the Olympics 23 years ago, Taekwondo has quickly become a firm favourite for the British fans and for Team GB and now Paralympics GB, after its Para debut in Tokyo. 5 medals at the delayed 2020 Olympics and Paralympics, three in Rio 4 years before that, Jade Jones' famous gold in London 2012 and Beijing 2008 was the setting for the first ever British medal thanks to the kicking talents of Sarah Stevenson. But how do you maintain that success? As generations change and different athletes come and go. Bradly is really mature for his young age and an example of determination. Weeks before to win the gold medal in the World Championships, he was so injured that he couldn't even kick. Hearing the interview with him you can learn:What can children learn from other sports that can help them ih taekwondo? Why do you have to focus on your performance and not on the results? What facilities does a world class training center have? How he and his team managed months of injuries before his participation in the Worlds? Why should parents not push a lot of pressure on children growing in the sport? How to fight against taller opponents? His first steps in taekwondo and multisport past.He started doing taekwondo at age 4 in his hometown Doncaster. Along with taekwondo he practiced other sports like football and running. He considers that training other sports improves your overall fitness and learning the basic tactics of other sports can help you as a sparring athlete. His club instructor and Sarah Stevenson's instructor were friends. Sometimes he went to trained to her club when she was already a national team member. When Sarah's Stevenson won the bronze medal at Beijing 2018 Bradly was just a kid. But he thought that Sarah's, a person like him, coming from his same small town, could achieve any dream as she put her mind set on it.Great Britain Taekwondo's success and the importance of patience for young athletes.Sarah's bronze medal at Beijing 2008 was of big help for British taekwondo, because it was their first olympic medal in taekwondo. The funding and support that came after that olympic medal was one of the keys to the later success of GB Taekwondo program. Creating a synergy that was increased later with Jade Jones later Gold Medal in London 2012.When he was 10 and he started in competition and watching the top performers of the sport winning big tournaments like the Olympics made him to decide that taekwondo was what he wanted to do in his future-At the beginning of his career he usually did well in training but sometimes it didn't transfer to performance in competition. He considers patience is very important for every athlete. “The time clock is different for everybody”. So, there is no need to rush.If you work hard your moment will come.International take off and how to learn from every experienceHe won his first international medal as a cadet in the 2012 Belgium Open. In 2015 he won the European Youth Championships. He considers that tournament a breakthrough moment in his career. His coach as a youth was Martin Stamper, a former World Bronze medalist who started his career as a coach with the GB Junior team.In 2016 Martin Stamper started to train the senior team and Bradly had to train a lot and prove that he deserved a place in the GB taekwondo academy. With less than a year in the academy he achieved a bronze medal in the Worlds of Muju but he still was not happy with it. He is a perfectionist so it took a while for him to digest the bronze and realize that it was not a negative experience. He had to learn from the experience and take the positive things. How to learn from events when you don't medal? In events that you don't win a medal you have to look at how you perform. Sometimes you don't win the medal but maybe you fought the best person in that weight class in the first fight, and maybe you had a great fight, and just lost for a few points or certain action. You don't have to focus on that you didn't win the medal. Bradly analyzes his performance in every tournament with his coach, focusing on what he did well and things that he needs to improve.Resilience, teamwork, ability to adapt and the World Championships in ManchesterBradly is usually a mentally strong athlete. In high performance sports, that strength is necessary to overcome difficult moments. One characteristic of high performance sports is that you demand the best from your body and your mind. You will train very close to the edge between top performance and injury. Before 2019 Worlds. Bradly faced months of constant injuries that didn't allow him to train in an ideal way.Starting the year he won the Presidents cup but he got injured in his first fight and could not train for a few weeks. After recovery he came back and was injured again.GB had a big training camp that was an opportunity to train and do test matches with some other top athletes like the french team and Amhad Abugaush. By that time Bradly was injured. He comments that you can't miss those opportunities. So his team decided not to train because he was severely injured but to do the test matches.Another important point is that weeks before the Worlds, he was so injured that he could not even kick. What can you do when you are facing a World Championship competition of taekwondo and you cannot kick?Do you just go home, rest and hope for the best? That's not an option. The solution in Bradly words was to smash conditioning. If you stop training kicks for a small period of time you won't forget how to kick. But you need the confidence of knowing that your body will be prepared for the demands of five or six fights that going for the gold medal implies in a World Championships. His World Championships gold medal proved that the strategy worked.Even he faced really difficult matches. For example, he stopped the winning streak in the World Championships of Lee Dae Hoon, one of the top performers in the history of taekwondo. Please enjoy the interview. You can hear it on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and Overcast.

Baby Spice Emma Bunton may not have released much music but she was busy having babies, designing childrens clothing, nappy and products as well as hosting popular reality programmes in the UK and US. All whilst maintaining a steady radio presenting career on Heart FM.   It’s an exciting start to this era for Baby – because she has a baby. Her first, Beau, born in 2007.   2009 – Emma starts her stint on Heart FM. She covers a couple of shifts and is rewarded with her on Saturday drive time slot. She pre-records because Baby has better places to be than a stuffy studio on a Saturday evening.   2010 – She joins the judging panel of Dancing On Ice. She did 2 series. It was a little controversial at the time. People wondered, with no ice skating background, what she could possibly provide as a judge. But she was praised for locking horns with chief judge Jason Gardiner and not being afraid to make unpopular comments. She said it helped her shed her Baby Spice tag…. Because she became Sassy Spice. Here are some of her best put downs: She sure has. On the third show she told GMTV's Dr Hilary Jones: "I literally couldn't breathe through the whole dance and when you lifted her I felt physically sick, I was so nervous for you both. "I just didn't enjoy it and I'm glad you were smiling because I wasn't." The next week she said of Emily Atack's performance: "I just thought it looked messy, unsteady. I felt like you were being dragged around. You are improving but very little." Then, in show seven, she told Sharron Davies: "It's a little bit like déjà vu for me, with a different outfit each week." 2011 – Baby Tate. To celebrate she launched her own baby range with reputable fashion retailer, Argos. Much bigger than the capsule Geri knocked out with Next….. this was a 99 piece collection. Her eldest Beau was modelling the collection – following in his Mamas footsteps, because one of her first jobs was a child model in the argos catalogue. I bet she was a proper cherubic little model. All blonde ringlets and chubby cheeks. 2011 – She really commits to Heart FM. Covers maternity leave for Harriet Scott on Breakfast, hosting alongside her old sparring partner – Jamie Theakston. Breakfast is a big shift. It’s a high profile position, a lot of responsibility and hardwork. Its all early mornings and beaming smiles. But Baby does a good job; she ends up taking over the spot permanently and doing it for 5 years. Until 2018. 2012 – She did the previously mentioned Mel C duet, I know him so well….. Which I think is just lovely of them to work together. The video is beautiful, if a little boring, of them just hugging. Interview quotes they described the song as “having the spirit of spice”. 2013  was a big year for Emma Bunton – not only did she win Foxy Bingo Celebrity Mother of the Year award she had a new tv show. “Your face sounds familiar” – it’s a bit Stars in their eyes. 6 celebrities portray famous singers, chosen at random, to win £10,000 for their chosen charity. They’re trained by Yvie Burnett – who is the second best vocal coach in the world. After Carrie from Fame Academy. Its all very Saturday night cringe – filing the spots between X Factor and Ant&Dec. 2014 - Jade Jones appears on “Big Reunion”. Baby named as ‘Lead Singer’ of the group. Link for the image: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0S4opaSrTHI 2017 – She appeared on the judging panel of new American reality show, BoyBand, which sought to find the new big BoyBand. She appeared alongside Nick Carter, Timbaland. Hosted by Rita Ora.             Best bit was towards the end they did a judges medley, with the contestants. Emma completes a flawless rendition of Say You’ll Be There. Of course she does. If only Rita were so lucky. She tries to join Timbaland for “Way I Are” and it is car crash.             They create the band “In Real Life”….. who have released 6 singles since in the past 18 months. One charting. It’s a start.  2018 – She becomes the host of American version of Great British Bake Off. Guardian had a great tagline: Contesants will have to dust it, make it, proof it, bake it – show her how good they are   We find her back recording, Studio Spice. More than a decade after her previous effort. Signed a deal with BMG records – who tend to focus on publishing rights and legacy artists. She is a songwriter with a legacy…. What a home.   Does mean her time is short. She has to say goodbye to Heart Breakfast. 5 year stint, successfully so. Award winning stint. Including “Radio presenter of the year” and “digital radio programme” at the TRIC awards. But they do give her a Sunday night slot (bet that is a pre-record). She knows how to keep a foot in the door (must be easy to work with if they keep you on that long).   Which makes room for her to finally get married! After 8 years of being engaged.

What took you so long? Its time to respect the solo career of Emma Lee Bunton.Baby Spice was one of the last to do solo release – but it was worth it. Pre-Forever, 1999, sherecorded a song for the Pokemon movie soundtrack, (Hey you) Free up your mind. Yep, thePokemon movie soundtrack.I didn’t realise but Baby Bunton had a really solid solo launch. She presented her own TV show onVH1, in October 1999, at a similar time to releasing the Tin Tin Outs cover of “What I am”.In 90s chart fashion it was in a battle for number 1. Against former bandmate, Geri Halliwells. Then after the Forever album, and hiatus, she went straight into presenting. Her current Heart FMgig is not a pleasant little surprise Baby had always been carving herself a position as a presenter. We’d wait to wait until April 2001 (What took you so long) to get Baby Bunton proper with therelease of her debut single and its accompanying album, Girl Like Me.Wrote the song herself with Richard Stannard, who had been a big part of the Spice and Spiceworldalbums (2 become 1, Spice up your life). Songwriting credits on almost every track – theres twocovers, but other than that. Consistently through her solo career, actually. I think with all of themthat was the case. Even Victoria Beckham. The album charted at number 4. Went gold. Critics were mixed – they said it was pleasant, she was pleasant, the songs were pleasant, it was just…. Pleasant. NME called her “Ewok spice”. Ithad a long metaphor comparing it to the movies that really wasn’t aimed at her target market.” herheart is in the right place but her soul is nowhere to be seen.”She had 2 further singles, summery ballad “Take my breath away” – Its nice but it does soundvery much like an album filler track. I think this was voted for as a single by fans on her website. Then we got the remixed version of “Were not gonna sleep tonight” – a party anthem aboutslopping around on the dancefloor until the early morning, just in time for christmas.- Both saw diminishing chart returns. 5 for take my breath; and 20 for Sleep. Which ultimatelyled to her parting ways with Virgin records.Of course, around this time she starts dating Jade Jones from Damage. They met in 1998 duringSpice Girls peak mania. Apparently, she flirted with him trying to get him to help her programme herphone – classic. They split a couple of times at the turn of the century. For about a year after their first year ofdating, and then again in 2002 when she started working with Simon Fuller again. So, she may have not been single for long but when she was she went for top gradebatchelor. Dated:- Rio Ferdinand- Justin Timberlake (On Ellen this year he revealed he hooked up with one of them.Their last split was in 2002 and was triggered by Bunton signing a new record deal with noneother than spice Tsar, Simon Fuller/19 management. Apparently, Jade wasn’t that happyabout it and Emma wanted to get back on it.In 2003, Bunton had to move out of her mansion because neighbours moaned about the noise fromher latenight partying (We’re not gonna sleep tonight). Gives you a bit of context for her new album. She reinvented herself as a 60s siren in 2003, when she released the Bond Theme soundingFree Me. We had to wait nearly two years but it was worth it.It peaked at number 5 and paved the way for the greatest song of her career, Maybe. We also talk about:- Her stint on Strictly come dancing- Her attempt at Actress Spice: appearing in Absolutely Fabulous- Bollywood Spice: Emma appeared in 2 bollywood movies and a documentary- Her controversial Howard Stern interview that resurfaced recently where he treats herhorrendously- Her third album, life in mono – cover of Downtown.

Jade currently lives in Southern California with her husband and 3 children, one girl and two boys.  On her blog Jonesin’ For Taste she creates easy recipes that allow you to explore the amazing flavors of the world AND spend more time together as a family and less time in the kitchen. Jade is a huge Harry Potter nerd, loves Winnie the Pooh, and is not so secretly obsessed with brownies. You can usually find her binge watching episodes of The Great British Bake Off, crocheting or sewing, or reading a book from her gigantic stash. I had a great time talking with Jade, and catching up with her! She and I met eleven years ago while attending school at Brigham Young University. Since then, we both have started our families, and our projects! Jade started her blog, Jonesin’ for Taste nine years ago to share her favorite easy recipes, and maybe earn a little income on the side. Her husband’s job over the years has had a varied schedule so she has had to find creative ways to have family meals together every day. It’s incredible how mealtime is such an anchor for our families to spend time together and talk, and experience new cuisines together. It can be challenging to learn about new recipes with our busy and stressful lives, especially when those recipes have unfamiliar ingredients or a long list of steps. Jade is on a mission to help families introduce new food to our families without sacrificing quality, or time with our families.  In fact, she has teamed up with Jenni over at The Gingered Whisk to create a Global Cuisine Challenge this month! You can go over to https://thegingeredwhisk.com/family-global-eating-challenge/ and subscribe for the challenge. There will be new ideas each week from different regions of the world. And, not just recipes. Jade and Jenni will be suggesting videos or TV shows that will encourage your family to try new food, foreign language phrases to go along with each region, as well as live discussions, and giveaways!  Find more from at Jade https://jonesinfortaste.com Social media: Facebook, Pinterest, http://instagram.com/jonesinfortaste (Instagram) Join the Family Success Toolkit Free Membership http://homeandfamilyculture.com

In this podcast, we interview the “Double Olympic Champion” Jade Jones MBE. Firstly we talk about where she came from and if she could have ever believed she would one day become double Olympic champion. We then chat about her first Olympic gold, the one from the youth Olympics. Then we chat about where her Taekwondo journey began and a look into how she got to where she has today. The World Championship Gold is something that's slipped away to date but we speak about how the next worlds will be in Manchester and how the home crowd will spur her to finally get that Gold. If we follow Jade on Instagram her story shows celebrity dating, spa days and lots of Taekwondo - we chat about what a typical day in the life of Jade Jones is actually like. Then we discuss her TV appearances and what's next on her list to tick off…… I'm a celeb get me out of here??? With so many athletes now coming out with their own equipment and clothing range, we talk about if this is something she's already looking at doing. The pressures of competitions are up next, how Jade deals with it, and what motivates her to keep winning. looking to the future we ask what life will look like after she hangs up her head guard. Paul Green leaving GB is a massive deal right now, we speak to Jade about who will now coach her and her thoughts on Paul leaving GB. Next, we discuss how Taekwondo is right now, and if she has any suggestions to improve it. Advice from Jade on how to be the next Jade Jones is our next discussion - how someone currently competing can get to her level. The next few questions are from you guys, our listeners. The first one was if Jade had any advice for parents on how to motivate and keep the interest of a young athlete. Next, we ask the question at what age did she start Taekwondo and what made her choose Taekwondo. Does Jade need to be strict with what she eats? What is her favourite food? Who or what inspires her to keep going, what is her motivation to stay at Olympic standard? How has what she has achieved changed her life, and what dreams has it helped her follow? And the final listener question, what strength and conditioning do you do leading up to the Olympics? As we ask all our listeners the same final question, we ask Jade what she thinks makes Taekwondo different to other martial arts and what she feels it takes to be a black belt.
